Abstract:The micro-ring resonator is an important device for the integration of silicon photonic chips. Based on the principle of micro-ring resonators, the paper mainly describes the research significance and development process of high-quality factor micro-ring resonators in the mid-infrared field, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of micro-ring resonators in different material systems in terms of technology and practical applications; then, we introduce the theoretical research of the cascaded micro-ring resonator based on the Vernier effect in the field of sensing and filtering in the mid-infrared region; the generation principle and development history of the mid-infrared Kerr optical frequency comb arc reviewed, and we theoretically prove the germanium strip waveguide micro-ring can realize a wide-spectrum optical frequency comb with a bandwidth close to an octave at a pump power as low as 80 mW. Finally, we summarize the research progress and prospect the future applications.

Abstract:High-quality optical ring resonators can confine light in a small volume and store it for millions of roundtrips. They have enabled the dramatic size reduction from laboratory scale to chip level of optical filters, modulators, frequency converters, and frequency comb generators in the visible and the near-infrared. The mid-infrared spectral region (3−12 μm), as important as it is for molecular gas sensing and spectroscopy, lags behind in development of integrated photonic components. Here we demonstrate the integration of mid-infrared ring resonators and directional couplers, incorporating a quantum cascade active region in the waveguide core. It enables electrical control of the resonant frequency, its quality factor, the coupling regime and the coupling coefficient. We show that one device, depending on its operating point, can act as a tunable filter, a nonlinear frequency converter, or a frequency comb generator. These concepts extend to the integration of multiple active resonators and waveguides in arbitrary configurations, thus allowing the implementation of purpose-specific mid-infrared active photonic integrated circuits for spectroscopy, communication, and microwave generation.

Abstract:We design, fabricate, and characterize two cascaded ring resonators based on Vernier effect for the application in the mid-infrared range of 3.65 μm to 4 μm. The devices are fabricated on 400nm silicon-on-insulator wafer. The free spectrum range of the Vernier structures is 116.2 nm and 62.6 nm and quality factor is around 4200 and 2100 respectively. Thermal tuning is also demonstrated and 7.4 nm envelope shift is observed at 2 mA.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) at Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelengths are essential for applications in precise spectroscopy, gas sensing and molecular fingerprinting, because of its revolutionary precision in both wavelength and frequency domain. The microresonator-based OFCs make a further step towards practical applications by including such high precision in a compact and cost-effective package. However, dispersion engineering is still a challenge for the conventional chi-3 micro-ring resonators and a MIR pump laser is required. Here we develop a different platform of a chi-2 optical superlattice box resonator to generate MIR OFC by optical parametric down conversion. With near-material-limited quality factor of 2.0*10^7, broadband MIR OFC can be generated with over 250 nm span around 2060 nm, where only a common near-infrared laser is necessary as pump. The fine teeth spacing corresponds to a measurable radio frequency beat note at 1.566 GHz, and also results in a fine spectroscopy resolution. Its linewidth is measured to be 6.1 kHz, which reveals a low comb noise that agrees well with the clean temporal waveforms. With high output power of over 370 mW, such MIR OFC is capable for long distance sensing and ranging applications.

Abstract:Although the cascaded double ring sensor can improve the sensitivity due to the difference between the radii of the reference ring and the sensing ring to produce Vernier effect, a large bandwidth spectrometer or a large tunable range laser is required for the wavelength interrogation. In this paper, the cascaded double ring senor based on silicon on insulator (SOI) with thermo-optical tuning for refractive index sensing is investigated. The peak wavelength shift of the transmission envelope can be converted into the electric power change of the micro-heater. The sensitivity reaches 33.703×103 mW/RIU by fitting Gaussian function to the spectral envelope for the wavelength interrogation with 7.9 nm wavelength measurement range.

Abstract:A photonic-assisted instantaneous microwave frequency measurement (IFM) system is demonstrated with add-drop optical ring resonators (ORRs) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. By launching a double-sideband suppressed carrier modulated optical signal into the ring, a monotonous amplitude comparison function (ACF) irrespective of the amplitudes of both optical and RF signals is established to translate the RF frequency to the power ratio between the through and drop ports of the ring. Two experiments have been set up with two rings which have different Q values. Two 25µm radius ORRs with Q values of 3974 and 25833 are used to offer different measurement ranges and accuracies. In the experiments the ORR with low Q value has a large measurement range of 0.5–35GHz, and the other one with high Q value exhibits a high accuracy of 0.1GHz in the frequency range of 0.1–5GHz.

Abstract:Optical filters are crucial devices for wavelength channel selecting in wavelength-division-multiplexed fiber-optic communication networks. Measuring the inner physical parameters of optical filters is significant for analyzing emerging new and more complex structures. This paper proposed a general and easy-to-operate method to extract physical parameters for complex filter structures with optical low-coherence measurement. By treating optical filters with digital filter concepts and z-transform analysis, we can build the relation between interferogram peak values and transfer function coefficients with brief linear equations. These equations can be used to derive the exact expression of transfer functions, which can manipulate the physical parameters. For a given filter structure, according to relations between transfer functions and physical parameters, the physical parameters could be extracted. This is especially meaningful in the postfabrication process.
Concentric Silicon Micro-Ring Resonators with Enhanced Transmission Notch Depth

Abstract:In this work, we have analyzed, fabricated and demonstrated concentric micro-ring resonators in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structure for enhanced transmission notches. The operation principles of the concentric ring resonators are studied by time-domain coupled-mode theory. Directional coupling between concentric rings offers another freedom in designing deep notch optical filters and ultra-sensitive biosensors. The finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulations have shown the improvement of the notch depth, evenly distributed mode field and the effect of the resonance shift. The device is demonstrated in silicon-on-insulator structure. Transmission notch depth improvement of ~ 15dB is demonstrated for the 21-20.02-μm-radius double-ring structure comparing with the single 21-μm-radius ring.
High-Q Mid-Infrared Chalcogenide Glass Resonators

Abstract:In this letter, we fabricated and characterized chalcogenide glass resonators monolithically integrated on mid-infrared transparent CaF2 substrates. The devices feature an intrinsic Q-factor of 4E5 at 5.2 micron wavelength, which represents the highest Q-factor reported in planar mid-infrared resonators. It is found that moisture can significantly impact the device performance when the device was exposed to an ambient environment, although the high-Q characteristics can be restored after undergoing an annealing treatment. Using these devices, we further demonstrated on-chip cavity-enhanced spectroscopy to quantify mid-IR absorption of ethanol solutions around 5.2 micron wavelength.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) optical frequency combs (OFCs) are ideal light sources for precision metrology and can find extensive applications, especially in molecular spectroscopy and gas detection. Here the generation of mode-locked MIR frequency comb in a LiNbO$_3$ microring through optimized slot-waveguide design is proposed. Such microcomb can span over four-fifths of an octave (ranging from $sim$2810 nm to $sim$4630 nm) with pump power as low as 50 mW, which can be applied to the 2f-3f self-referencing for fully stabilization and helpful to monolithic integration of the whole system. Further investigations on complex dynamical processes for the microcomb generation suggest that the intracavity soliton drifting caused by the third-order dispersion could be compensated by the self-steepening effect as introducing an additional drift through proper dispersion tailoring. This work could facilitate the low-threshold broadband MIR frequency comb generation technique, as well as provide a way to realize more delicate control of soliton microcombs in both temporal and spectral domain.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate continuously tunable optical time delay and advance using coupling-modulated microring resonators (CMR) with a 15-mu m radius. By modulating the coupling coefficient through thermo-optical effect based on micro-heater, the coupling state of the microring is flexibly controlled; as a result, a large dynamic time tuning range (from time advance to delay) is achieved. The CMR device based on SOI is fabricated with commercial 0.18-mu m CMOS technology. A novel micro-heater structure was firstly used to thermally tune the coupling state of the micoring. Pulse delay and advance from -15 ps to 85 ps is experimentally realized.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cavity-coupled perfect absorber (CCPA) consisting of a bottom gold layer, a SiO 2 layer, and multilayer MIM (metal–insulator-metal) nanowires. By coupling the Fabry-Pérot (F-P) cavity mode with the magnetic plasmons (MPs) resonance mode in multilayer MIM structure, the MPs resonance in the multilayer MIM structure is enhanced and leads to increased absorption of the structure. By designing and optimizing the parameters, near-perfect absorption in the mid-infrared wavelengths can be achieved. The positions of the two absorption peaks can be adjusted by changing the width of the nanowires and the thickness of the SiO 2 layer, resulting in the formant excitation at any position in the mid-infrared. The full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the short-wave peak is only 0.076 µm, and the FWHM of the long-wave peak is only 0.46 µm. The long-wave absorption peak maintains high efficiency and stability even at large incident angles, exhibiting “omnidirectional” characteristics. The tunable mid-infrared emission peak can be matched to the characteristic spectra of gases, making it suitable for infrared radiation sources in gas detection.

Abstract:Microresonator-based optical frequency combs are broadband light sources consisting of equally spaced and coherent narrow lines, which are extremely promising for applications in molecular spectroscopy and sensing in the mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region. There are still great challenges in exploring how to improve materials for microresonator fabrication, extend spectral bandwidth of parametric combs, and realize fully stabilized soliton MIR frequency combs. Here, we present an effective scheme for broadband MIR optical frequency comb generation in a MgF2 crystalline microresonator pumped by the quantum cascade laser. The spectral evolution dynamics of the MIR Kerr frequency comb is numerically investigated, revealing the formation mechanism of the microresonator soliton comb via scanning the pump-resonance detuning. We also experimentally implement the modulation instability state MIR frequency comb generation in MgF2 resonators covering from 3380 nm to 7760 nm. This work proceeds microresonator-based comb technology toward a miniaturization MIR spectroscopic device that provides potential opportunities in many fields such as fundamental physics and metrology.

Abstract:Capturing the distinctive spectral fingerprints of molecules in the infrared (IR) region is of vital importance in gas detection. However, it is still limited by the resolution, sensitivity and signal to noise ratio of IR detectors. Here, a broadband frequency conversion scheme from the middle IR band (MIR) to the telecom band based on four-wave mixing process is proposed and theoretically investigated, combining the advantages of well-established detectors in the telecom band and unique molecular vibrations in the MIR band. A flat and low dispersion profile is generated in an asymmetric Ge-As-Se/SiO2 hybrid waveguide, which exhibits four zero-dispersion wavelengths and a dispersion variation of sub-20 ps/nm/km. Furthermore, taking advantage of the high order phase-matching, an ultra-broad 3-dB continuous wavelength conversion bandwidth covering 1454-4521 nm is achieved, which to the best of our knowledge is the widest frequency conversion bandwidth in the chip-scale devices. In addition, a fabrication scheme is proposed for the precise manipulation of dispersion. It holds great potential for practical applications in photonic integrated gas sensing, biomedical diagnostics.

Abstract:Microring resonators on silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) were characterized at 2.75 $\mu\hbox{m}$ wavelength. We obtained a $Q$ factor of 11400 $\pm$ 800. The thermo-optic coefficient of epitaxial silicon of SOS wafer was measured to be $2.11 \pm 0.08 \times 10^{-4}\ \hbox{K}^{-1}$. We also describe a characterization technique to measure the $Q$ of microring resonators using a fixed wavelength source. By only varying the temperature of the device, it is possible to measure the $Q$ of a mid-infrared (mid-IR) microresonator. The proposed method provides an alternative method of $Q$ measurement for microring resonators in mid-IR, where tunable lasers may not be easily available. The technique was used to determine the $Q$ of SOS microring resonators at 2.75 $\mu\hbox{m}$ wavelength.

Abstract:Monolithic optical parametric oscillators extend laser frequencies in compact architectures, but normally guide and circulate all pump, signal, and idler beams. Critical frequency matching is raised among these resonances, limiting operation stability and continuous tuning. Here, we develop a box resonator geometry that guides all beams but only resonates for signal. Such noncritical frequency matching enables 227 GHz continuous tuning, with sub-10 kHz linewidth and 0.43 W power at 3310 nm. Our results confirm that monolithic resonator can be effectively used as a tunable laser including midinfrared wavelength, as further harnessed with methane fine spectral measurement at MHz accuracy.
