Abstract:Small animal PET scanners need to have a high spatial resolution since the size of the organs of small animals is much smaller than that of humans, and also need to have a high sensitivity since the allowed injection dose is limited by the radiation dosimetry of the small organs. To simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity for a small animal PET scanner, detectors with high position resolution, high efficiency and high depth of interaction (DOI) resolution are required. In this work, three 17 x 17 pixelated LYSO arrays with crystal size of similar to 0.5 mm and an outer dimension of 10 x 10 x 20 mm(3) are fabricated. The first LYSO array uses 80 mu m thick BaSO4 reflector. The second and the third LYSO arrays use 65 mu m thick Toray reflectors. The outermost side of the third LYSO array is also wrapped with k9 glass of the same size as the crystals in the array in order to improve the light collection and flood histogram quality for the edge crystals. The LYSO arrays are read out with two Hamamatsu SiPM arrays from both ends. The SiPM array is 4 x 4, with 3 x 3 mm(2) pixel size and 0.2 mm gap in between the SiPM pixels. The SiPM array is read out with a resistor network circuit to reduce the number of signals from 16 to 4. The performance of the detector in terms of flood histograms, energy resolution, DOI resolution and timing resolution was measured. All three detectors provide good flood histograms and all crystals in an array can be clearly resolved. The average DOI resolutions of individual crystals are 1.84, 1.98 and 1.93 mm for the three detectors for events with energy E > 350 keV. The BaSO4 array has higher light output and provides a better average crystal energy resolution of 21.0 %. The photopeak amplitude of the Toray arrays changes with depth, which results in worse energy resolutions of 24.4 % and 23.8 % for the two detectors respectively. The average timing resolutions of individual crystals are 1.23, 1.27 and 1.24 ns for the three detectors for events with E > 350 keV. All three detector modules achieved high position resolution (0.5 mm crystal size), high efficiency (20 mm crystal length) and high DOI resolution (<2.0 mm) and can be used to build a high sensitivity small animal PET scanner with spatial resolution approaching the physical limit.

Abstract:Depth encoding detectors are preferred for PET scanners with a small ring diameter and a long axial field of view. In this work, novel depth encoding detectors using different inter-crystal reflector arrangements along the depth of single layer crystal arrays are proposed and their performance is evaluated. As compared to the previous four-layer detector with different reflector arrangements, the detectors proposed in this work are expected to improve the energy and timing resolution of the detectors. 4×4 LYSO arrays with a crystal size of 3×3×20 mm3 and 6×6 LYSO arrays with a crystal size of 2×2×20 mm3 are fabricated using two and four reflector arrangements along the crystal’s depth. The LYSO arrays are single-ended read out by 4×4 SiPM arrays with a pixel size of 3×3 mm2. The first and second half of the crystals are clearly resolved from the flood histograms for the two detectors with two reflector arrangements. 80% of the events can be correctly assigned to each half. The detectors provide a two layer depth encoding capability. The photopeak value and average energy resolution of the first and second half of the crystal are almost the same. The average crystal energy resolutions of the 4×4 and 6×6 LYSO arrays with two reflector arrangements are 10.4% and 11.6%, respectively. The timing resolutions of the two detectors are 284 ps and 442 ps for an energy window of 400∼600 keV. However, each quarter of the crystals cannot be clearly resolved for the two detectors with four reflector arrangements and further optimization is still required. The detectors developed in this work simultaneously provide a two layer depth encoding capability, good energy and timing resolution, and show great promise for developing high performance dedicated brain, whole body and total body PET scanners in the future.
Full-fieldin Vivoimaging of Nanoparticles Using Benchtop Cone-Beam XFCT System with Pixelated Photon Counting Detector.

Abstract:Objective.X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (XFCT) is a promising noninvasive technique forin vivoimaging of high-Z elements (e.g. gadolinium (Gd) or gold (Au)). In this study we upgraded our experimental XFCT system using a flat panel photon counting detector with redesigned pinhole collimation in order to achieve 3D XFCT images during one scan.Approach.Aiming at the characteristics of pinhole-collimated cone-beam XFCT imaging, a new scatter correction algorithm was proposed to estimate the normalized spectrum of scatter background based on K-N formula and realize correction by a weighted least squares method. Then, images were quantitatively reconstructed by a maximum likelihood iterative algorithm with the attenuation correction.Main results.The potential on full-fieldin vivoXFCT imaging of this new system was investigated. An imaging experiment of a PMMA phantom with the diameter of 35 mm was carried out for quantitative evaluation of the system performance. Results show that 2 mg ml-1Gd solutions can be successfully reconstructed with a 45 min cone-beam XFCT scan.In vivoXFCT imaging experiments of mice with injection of Gd nanoparticles (GdNPs) were also performed and demonstrated in this paper. A mouse was injected through the tail vein with 20 mg ml-1NaGdF4 solution and then anesthetized with isoflurane during the cone-beam XFCT scan.Significance.The distribution of the GdNPs inside the mouse can be well reconstructed so that the deposition of NPsin vivocan be clearly observed, which indicates the feasibility of the proposed system for full-field XFCT of small animals and further potential in relevantin vivoresearch.
Performance of a High-Resolution Depth Encoding PET Detector Using Barium Sulfate Reflector.

Abstract:Small animal positron emission tomography (PET) is a well-established imaging modality in preclinical biomedical research. The performance of current small animal PET scanners is mainly limited by the detector performance and depth-encoding detectors are required to simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. In this work, the performance of a high-resolution dual-ended readout lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) array using barium sulfate powder (BaSO4) as the inter-crystal reflector was measured for the first time and compared to that of a LYSO array using the most commonly used enhanced specular reflector (ESR). Both LYSO arrays have 18 x 18 crystals and the crystal size is about 0.62 x 0.62 x 20 mm(3). The LYSO arrays are readout by two position-sensitive photomultiplier tubes (PSPMTs) from both ends. The flood histograms, energy resolution, depth of interaction (DOI) resolution and timing resolution were measured. The flood histograms of the LYSO array with BaSO4 reflector is much better than that of the LYSO array with ESR reflector. For the BaSO4 array, all crystals can be clearly resolved. For the ESR array, all crystals in one direction can be clearly resolved, but the edge 2-3 columns of the crystals in the other direction cannot be resolved. The average energy resolution of the BaSO4 and ESR arrays are 15.2% and 15.3%, respectively. The average DOI resolution of the BaSO4 array is 2.19 mm, which is 24% worse than the 1.76 mm DOI resolution of the ESR array. The timing resolution of both arrays is similar to 1.6 ns. The LYSO array with the new BaSO4 reflector provided an much better flood histogram in a high resolution dual-ended readout PET detectors as compared to the ESR array, and will be used to develop a small animal PET scanner that can simultaneously achieve uniform high spatial resolution, high sensitivity and low cost.

Abstract:The parallax or depth of interaction (DOI) problem affects the image resolution of positron emission tomography system. A two-stage depth-encoding detector is described and evaluated. The detector consists of two layers of LSO crystals and a position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSP-MT). The upper LSO array is placed on the lower LSO array with a shift of half the element pitch in both X and Y directions. Since the centroid of the output light distribution from each crystal element locates at different position on the PS-PMT, the crystal element can be identified on the image plane derived with the centroid calculation. The performance of the detector was evaluated in terms of applicability of PET. The intrinsic spatial resolution of the detector is 1.15mm FWHM for the upper array, and that for the lower array is 1. 34mm FWHM at the gamma-ray normal incidence. The average energy resolution for the upper elements is 23. 6%, and that for the lower elements is 19. 7% at the 511keV full energy peak from 22Na source. Three-stage depth encoding detector or four-stage depth encoding detector can be realized by the similar technique.

Abstract:PurposeThe performance of current small animal PET scanners is mainly limited by the detector performance and depth encoding detectors are required to develop PET scanner to simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. Among all depth encoding PET detector approaches, dual‐ended readout detector has the advantage to achieve the highest depth of interaction (DOI) resolution and spatial resolution. Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) is believed to be the photodetector of the future for PET detector due to its excellent properties as compared to the traditional photodetectors such as photomultiplier tube (PMT) and avalanche photodiode (APD). The purpose of this work is to develop high resolution depth encoding small animal PET detector using dual‐ended readout of finely pixelated scintillator arrays with SiPMs.MethodsFour lutetium‐yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) arrays with 11 × 11 crystals and 11.6 × 11.6 × 20 mm3 outside dimension were made using ESR, Toray and BaSO4 reflectors. The LYSO arrays were read out with Hamamatsu 4 × 4 SiPM arrays from both ends. The SiPM array has a pixel size of 3 × 3 mm2, 0.2 mm gap in between the pixels and a total active area of 12.6 × 12.6 mm2. The flood histograms, DOI resolution, energy resolution and timing resolution of the four detector modules were measured and compared.ResultsAll crystals can be clearly resolved from the measured flood histograms of all four arrays. The BaSO4 arrays provide the best and the ESR array provides the worst flood histograms. The DOI resolution obtained from the DOI profiles of the individual crystals of the four array is from 2.1 to 2.35 mm for events with E > 350 keV. The DOI ratio variation among crystals is bigger for the BaSO4 arrays as compared to both the ESR and Toray arrays. The BaSO4 arrays provide worse detector based DOI resolution. The photopeak amplitude of the Toray array had the maximum change with depth, it provides the worst energy resolution of 21.3%. The photopeak amplitude of the BaSO4 array with 80 μm reflector almost doesn't change with depth, it provides the best energy resolution of 12.9%. A maximum timing shift of 1.37 ns to 1.61 ns among the corner and the center crystals in the four arrays was obtained due to the use of resistor network readout. A crystal based timing resolution of 0.68 ns to 0.83 ns and a detector based timing resolution of 1.26 ns to 1.45 ns were obtained for the four detector modules.ConclusionsFour high resolution depth encoding small animal PET detectors were developed using dual‐ended readout of pixelated scintillator arrays with SiPMs. The performance results show that those detectors can be used to build a small animal PET scanner to simultaneously achieve uniform high spatial resolution and high sensitivity.

Abstract:We describe a small animal SPECT imager based on scintillation crystal arrays and position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSPMT). This SPECT detector consists of a cerium doped lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) scintillation crystal (22 × 22 pixel array, 2 mm × 2 mm × 3 mm pixel size), a H8500c PSPMT (Hamamatsu Photonics Co., Ltd., Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan), and a parallel hole collimator (Nuclear Fields Pty. Ltd, St. Marys, Australia). The detector design, electronic setup and image correction method are presented. Conical phantom study and animal experiment (BALB/C male nude mice, 16 week, 20g) were performed for the uniformity correction evaluation and imaging performance test respectively. The preliminary results demonstrate that this SPECT imager can achieve the small animal whole body imaging effectively and thus be one of the modalities of our future multimodality imaging system. The feasibility that LYSO crystal can substitute NaI(TI) for SPECT imager development is also validated..
High resolution detectors for whole-body PET scanners by using dual-ended readout

Abstract:Abstract Background Most current whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) scanners use detectors with high timing resolution to measure the time-of-flight of two 511 keV photons, improving the signal-to-noise ratio of PET images. However, almost all current whole-body PET scanners use detectors without depth-encoding capability; therefore, their spatial resolution can be affected by the parallax effect. Methods In this work, four depth-encoding detectors consisting of LYSO arrays with crystals of 2.98 × 2.98 × 20 mm 3 , 2.98 × 2.98 × 30 mm 3 , 1.95 × 1.95 × 20 mm 3 , and 1.95 × 1.95 × 30 mm 3 , respectively, were read at both ends, with 6 × 6 mm 2 silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) pixels in a 4 × 4 array being used. The timing signals of the detectors were processed individually using an ultrafast NINO application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) to obtain good timing resolution. The 16 energy signals of the SiPM array were read using a row and column summing circuit to obtain four position-encoding energy signals. Results The four PET detectors provided good flood histograms in which all crystals could be clearly resolved, the crystal energy resolutions measured being 10.2, 12.1, 11.4 and 11.7% full width at half maximum (FWHM), at an average crystal depth of interaction (DOI) resolution of 3.5, 3.9, 2.7, and 3.0 mm, respectively. The depth dependence of the timing of each SiPM was measured and corrected, the timing of the two SiPMs being used as the timing of the dual-ended readout detector. The four detectors provided coincidence time resolutions of 180, 214, 239, and 263 ps, respectively. Conclusions The timing resolution of the dual-ended readout PET detector was approximately 20% better than that of the single-ended readout detector using the same LYSO array, SiPM array, and readout electronics. The detectors developed in this work used long crystals with small cross-sections and provided good flood histograms, DOI, energy, and timing resolutions, suggesting that they could be used to develop whole-body PET scanners with high sensitivity, uniform high spatial resolution, and high timing resolution.

Optimization Of Crystal Surface Treatment For A Double Layer Depth Of Interaction Detector

Abstract:A depth of interaction (DOI) detector for gamma-rays has been developed for a high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET) system dedicated to small animal studies. It is well known that different surface treatment on the crystals influences the total light output, and consequently affects the performance of the detectors. In order to optimize the performance of the new proposed DOI detector, we have focused on the comparison of the detectors consisting of narrow LSO crystals with different surface conditions. We observed a significant improvement in crystal identification, energy resolution, time resolution and detector response resolution for constructing detectors using polished crystals compared to those using roughened LSO crystals. The results of this study can provide useful information for LSO detectors to be used in practical PET systems.
High Resolution TOF-PET Detectors by Using Dual-Ended Readout with SiPM Arrays of Different Pixel Sizes on Each End

Abstract:This study focuses on developing high-resolution depth encoding PET detectors with good timing resolution for organ-specific time-of-flight (TOF) PET scanners. The novel PET detector consists of an LYSO crystal array dual-ended read out with SiPM arrays of different pixel sizes at each end. Three LYSO arrays with crystal size of 1.95×1.95×20, 1.44×1.44×10, and 0.98×0.98×20 mm 3 were fabricated. An 8×8 SiPM array with pixel size of 3×3 mm 2 is used in one end. Row and column summing readout circuits plus 1D position encoding circuits are used to compress the number of signals from 64 to 4 position encoding energy signals. The flood histogram of the detector is calculated by sorely using the four position encoding energy signals of the SiPM array. A 4×4 SiPM array with a pixel size of 6×6 mm 2 is used at the other end. The timings of the 16 SiPM pixels are obtained using the NINO ASIC and the fastest timing is obtained using an OR circuit and used as the time stamp of the detector. The flood histogram, energy resolution and timing resolution of the detectors were measured. All crystals of the two detectors with large crystal sizes can be clearly resolved. The edge crystals of the detector with the smallest crystal size cannot be resolved. Both energy and timing resolution degrade as crystal size decreases. The detectors provided an average crystal energy resolutions of 11.7%, 15.5%, and 17.6%, and an average crystal coincidence time resolution of 275 ps, 276 ps, and 320 ps. The DOI resolution of the detectors will be measured next. The detectors provided good flood histogram, timing resolution and reduces the number of electronics channels at the same time.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, a small animal PET scanner named SIAT aPET was developed using dual-ended readout depth encoding detectors to simultaneously achieve high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The scanner consists of four detector rings with 12 detector modules per ring; the ring diameter is 111 mm and the axial field of view (FOV) is 105.6 mm. The images are reconstructed using an ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithm. The spatial resolution of the scanner was measured by using a 22 Na point source at the center axial FOV with different radial offsets. The sensitivity of the scanner was measured at center axis of the scanner with different axial positions. The count rate performance of the system was evaluated by scanning mouse-sized and rat-sized phantoms. An ultra-micro hot-rods phantom and two mice injected with 18 F-NaF and 18 F-FDG were scanned on the scanner. An average depth of interaction (DOI) resolution of 1.96 mm, energy resolution of 19.1% and timing resolution of 1.20 ns were obtained for the detector. Average spatial resolutions of 0.82 mm and 1.16 mm were obtained up to a distance of 30 mm radially from the center of the FOV when reconstructing a point source in 1% and 10% warm backgrounds, respectively, using OSEM reconstruction with 16 subsets and 10 iterations. Sensitivities of 16.0% and 11.9% were achieved at center of the scanner for energy windows of 250–750 keV and 350–750 keV respectively. Peak noise equivalent count rates (NECRs) of 324 kcps and 144 kcps were obtained at an activity of 26.4 MBq for the mouse-sized and rat-sized phantoms. Rods of 1.0 mm diameter can be visually resolved from the image of the ultra-micro hot-rods phantom. The capability of the scanner was demonstrated by high quality in-vivo mouse images.

Development of a Depth of Interaction Detector for Γ-Rays

Abstract:A depth of interaction (DOI) detector for γ-rays has been developed for a high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET) system dedicated to small animal studies. The DOI detector consists of a double-layer array of lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) crystals and a position-sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT), Hamamatsu R7600-C12, where the element size of the LSO array is 1.8×1.8×10mm. In the LSO crystal block, the upper LSO array is placed on the lower LSO array with a shift of half the element pitch in both X and Y directions. Since the centroid of the output light distribution from each crystal element locates at a different position on the PS-PMT, the crystal element can be identified on the image plane derived from the centroid calculation. The performance of the DOI detector was measured in terms of its application to PET. Each crystal element is clearly separated on the position map so that a single bit of DOI information can be derived, as well as the position information. The timing resolution for the upper array was 0.98ns in FWHM, and was 0.83ns in FWHM for the lower array. The spatial resolution in coincidence was measured with a pair of DOI detectors at different incident angles of γ-rays. The averaged FWHM values were 1.4mm at 0° and 3.4mm at 30°, while those of the detector pair without DOI were 1.5mm at 0° and 4.5mm at 30°. It is confirmed that the DOI detector provides better spatial resolution for the oblique incidence angle of γ-rays, which results in improved PET resolution in the peripheral field of view (FOV). The experimental results show that the new DOI detector is applicable for high-resolution PET systems.

Abstract:Detectors with depth encoding capability, good energy resolution and good timing resolution are required to develop high performance whole body and total body PET scanners. In this work, an 8 x 8 LYSO array with crystal size of 3 x 3 x 20 mm(3) was fabricated by using coupling materials that included 5 mm optical glue, 9 mm triangle ESR reflector and 6 mm rectangle ESR reflector from the top to the bottom in between adjacent crystals in one direction. The LYSO array was single-ended read out by an 8 x 8 SiPM array with one-to-one coupling. Row and column summing circuit was used to read out the SiPM signals. The depth of interaction (DOI) of the detector was measured with the depth dependent light sharing between adjacent crystals while maintaining acceptable energy resolution and timing resolution. The performance of the detector module was evaluated. All crystals can be clearly resolved from the measured flood histogram. An average DOI resolution of 4.62 mm and an average timing resolution of 518 ps are obtained for events with E > 400 keV. The average energy resolution of the detector is 13.5%. This work provides a cost-effective depth encoding detector module that can be used to build high performance whole body and total body PET scanners in the future.

Abstract:GSO position-sensitive block detectors have been developed using the PMT-Quadrant-Sharing (PQS) technology for animal PET imaging. Two prototype block detectors with dimensions of 1.51 mm x 1.51 mm x 10 mm (12 x 12 array) and 1.66 mm x 1.66 mm x 10 mm (11 x 11 array) were built using 19 mm round PMTs. The Enhanced Specular Reflector mirror-film (98% reflectance, 0.065 mm thickness, 3M Co.) was used to control the light collection and distribution in the PQS design. The detector pitches are 1.59 (12 x 12) and 1.74 mm (11 x 11) and the crystal-packing fractions 95.0 and 95.4%, respectively. List-mode measurements with Cs-137 sources were carried out to investigate the crystal decoding and analyzed to extract the individual crystal spectra. All the crystals in both the detectors were clearly identified and well isolated. The light-collection efficiency is lowest in the central crystals and highest in the crystals of the four corners, with a ratio of 0.76 for the 11 x 11 array. The overall energy resolution of the 11 x 11 array is 13.5% (15.4% at 511 keV) with a standard deviation of 1.2%, which indicates that the individual energy resolutions of the detector are high and uniformly distributed. From this study, we achieved a high decodable crystals/PMT ratio of 144:1 for the 19 mm PQS GSO detector technology with crystals 10 rum deep. It is believed that these detectors would be useful for high resolution animal PET imaging.
A High Count-Rate and Depth-of-Interaction Resolving Single Layered One-Side Readout Pixelated Scintillator Crystal Array for PET Applications

Abstract:Organ-specific, targeted Field-of-View (FoV) Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) inserts are viable solutions for a number of imaging tasks where whole-body PET/MRI systems lack the necessary sensitivity and resolution. To meet the required PET detector performance of these systems, high count-rates and effective spatial resolutions on the order of a few mm, a novel two-axis patterned reflector foil pixelated scintillator crystal array design is developed and its proof-of-concept illustrated in-silico with the Monte Carlo radiation transport modelling toolkit Geant4. It is shown that the crystal surface roughness and phased open reflector cross-section patterns could be optimised to maximise either the PET radiation detector's effective spatial resolution, or count rate before event pile up. In addition, it was illustrated that these two parameters had minimal impact on the energy and time resolution of the proposed PET radiation detector design. Finally, it is shown that a PET radiation detector with balance performance could be constructed using ground crystals and phased open reflector cross-section pattern corresponding to the middle of the tested range.

Abstract:The high density,high light output,and sho rt decay time of LSO (lutetiumorthosilicate) make it an attractive scinti llator for positron emission tomography (PET) detector applications.The performa nce of the LSO crystal was evaluated in terms of applicability to radiation imag ing systems.A number of surface conditions were considered in order to obtain hi gher light output.The single LSO crystal coupled to a position-sensitive photom ultiplier (PS-PMT),R5900-00-C12,showed energy resolution of 15% for the 511 k eV full energy peak from 22　Na soure.The timing resolution was 0. 65ns for the same condition.The spatial resolution capability was demonstrated by imaging three LSO arrays finally.

Abstract:Background An organ‐specific Positron emission tomography (PET) scanner can achieve the same sensitivity with much fewer detectors as compared to a whole‐body PET scanner, thereby substantially reducing the system cost. It can also achieve much better spatial resolution as compared to a whole‐body PET scanner since the photon noncollinearity effect is reduced by using smaller detector ring diameter. Consequently, the development of organ‐specific PET scanners with high spatial resolution, high sensitivity, and low cost has been a major focus of international research in PET instrument development for many years. Purpose The focus of this work is to develop high‐resolution depth encoding PET detectors with high timing resolution and a reduced number of signal processing electronic channels. Consequently, PET scanners tailored for specific organs can be developed with high spatial and timing resolutions, enhanced sensitivity, and affordable cost. Methods An 8 × 8 silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array with a pixel size of 3 × 3 mm2 and a multiplexed signal readout circuit is coupled to one end of the lutetium yttrium orthosilicate (LYSO) array with a glass light guide between them to achieve a good crystal identification of small crystals by using only four position‐encoding energy signals. A 4 × 4 SiPM array with a pixel size of 6 × 6 mm2 and an individual readout circuit is coupled to the other end of the crystal array without a light guide to achieve a good coincidence timing resolution (CTR). The depth of interaction (DOI) of the detector is measured by ratio of the energies measured by the two SiPM arrays and can be used to correct the depth dependency of the timing. The flood histograms, energy resolutions (ERs), DOI resolutions, and CTRs of two detectors utilizing LYSO arrays with different crystal sizes were measured with each of the two SiPM arrays alternately placed at the front of the detectors. Results A better flood histogram was obtained by placing the 8 × 8 SiPM array in front of the detector. The depth dependency of timing was larger when the 4 × 4 SiPM array was placed at the front of the detector. A better CTR was obtained by placing the 4 × 4 SiPM array at the back of the detector as compared to placing it at the front of the detector if the depth‐dependent timing correction was not performed. If the depth‐dependent timing correction was performed, a better CTR can be obtained by placing the 4 × 4 SiPM array at the front of the detector. The first detector using a 12 × 12 LYSO crystal array with a crystal size of 1.95 × 1.95 × 20 mm3 provided a flood histogram with all crystals clearly resolved, an ER of 11.7%, a DOI resolution of 2.9 mm, and a CTR of 275 ps with the depth‐dependent timing correction. The second detector using a 23 × 23 LYSO crystal array with a crystal size of 0.95 × 0.95 × 20 mm3 provided a flood histogram with all but the edge crystals clearly resolved, an ER of 17.6%, a DOI resolution of 2.3 mm, and a CTR of 293 ps with the depth‐dependent timing correction. Conclusions PET detectors with small crystal cross‐sectional sizes, good DOI and timing resolutions and a reduced number of electronics channels were developed. The detectors can be used to develop high performance organ‐specific PET scanners.

Abstract:Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is an effective metabolic and functional imaging technique in both clinical and pre-clinical applications. Gamma-ray detector is a key component of a SPECT system. High performance detectors are required for high-quality SPECT imaging. In this paper, a detector using a side-by-side LYSO/GAGG phoswich array read out by a sparse 8 x 8 SiPM array is developed. The phoswich crystals are discriminated using pulse waveform integration to peak ratio. A Tc-99m and a Co-57 source irradiation experiments were conducted. Results of the experiments demonstrate that the LYSO and GAGG can be clearly discriminated using the simple parameter. 12 x 12 of both LYSO and GAGG crystal arrays with a crystal size of 1.35 x 2.7 x 7 mm(3) could be successfully distinguished. The average energy resolutions @140 keV of 12 x 12 LYSO crystals and 12 x 12 GAGG crystals are 26.23% and 21.29%, respectively. The calculation and experiment verifies that the side-by-side LYSO/GAGG phoswich detector achieves relatively high resolution and high sensitivity which is suitable for high performance SPECT systems.
