Abstract:We present a general theoretical framework for discussing the physics of low frequency fluctuation spectra of shear Alfven and acoustic waves in toroidal plasmas of fusion interest. This framework helps identifying the relevant dynamics and, thus, interpreting experimental observations. We also discuss the roles of such general theoretical framework for verification and validation of numerical simulation codes vs. analytic predictions and experimental results.

Plasma Sources Science and Technology

Abstract:Plasma Sources Science and Technologyis pleased to announce a special issue focusing on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with low-temperature plasmas, to be published in the summer of 2014. In this special issue, we invite original papers relating to electromagnetic waves in plasmas and electromagnetic wave–plasma interactions. Papers are sought on fundamental aspects of such interactions as well as applications. As many partially ionized plasmas are generated using radio-frequency sources, there is a rich history of studies on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with plasmas. Microwave and helicon plasmas are two prominent sources that come to mind in this regard. In addition, a number of emerging studies on structured plasmas which produce unusual properties of propagating waves such as electromagnetic bandgaps have been recently reported in Plasma Sources Science and Technology and other research journals. As capacitively coupled plasmas are increasingly being operated in the very high frequency (VHF) range (>30 MHz) and CCP dimensions have increased, there has been significant interest in electromagnetic-wave effects in VHF CCP reactors. Electromagnetic wave–plasma interactions play a vital role in many plasma diagnostics including microwave interferometry. All the studies mentioned above have been pursued both experimentally and theoretically, and theoretical work has been performed both using linear and nonlinear schemes. Electromagnetic wave–plasma interaction remains a vibrant research topic and opportunities exist for innovations such as new plasma diagnostic methods using high-frequency waves (microwaves and terahertz waves) and new propulsion systems driven by microwave plasmas. This special issue is aimed at motivating more in-depth investigations of existing plasma sources and applications, as well as fostering new developments. Examples of research topics welcome for this special issue include, but are not limited to: Plasma photonic crystals and metamaterials, including in-plasma photonics Plasma sources with effects of electromagnetic waves Electromagnetic-wave propagation in and around plasmas Novel phenomena and devices related to interactions between plasmas and waves Theoretical studies on electromagnetic-wave interaction with plasmas, including new techniques to address nonlinear phenomena Plasma diagnostics utilizing electromagnetic waves Electromagnetic analysis of large plasma-containing systems Research papers in PSST can be up to 14 pages (at approximately 900 words per page) in length, including space for figures, graphs and tables (figures are equivalent to about 150 words each). We encourage colour figures and multimedia clips for the online version of the special issue, for which there is no charge. As for our regular submissions there will be no page charges. You are invited to submit your paper by 30 March 2014. Submissions received after this date will be considered for the journal, but may not be included in the special issue. All submitted papers will be fully refereed to the journal's usual high standards and corresponding authors whose papers are published in the special issue will receive a complimentary copy. Upon publication, the issue will be widely promoted to the low-temperature physics community, ensuring that your work receives maximum visibility.

Abstract:A grand-challenge problem at the forefront of physics is to understand how energy is transported and transformed in plasmas. This fundamental research priority encapsulates the conversion of plasma-flow and electromagnetic energies into particle energy, either as heat or some other form of energisation. The smallest characteristic scales, at which electron dynamics determines the plasma behaviour, are the next frontier in space and astrophysical plasma research. The analysis of astrophysical processes at these scales lies at the heart of the field of electron-astrophysics. Electron scales are the ultimate bottleneck for dissipation of plasma turbulence, which is a fundamental process not understood in the electron-kinetic regime. Since electrons are the most numerous and most mobile plasma species in fully ionised plasmas and are strongly guided by the magnetic field, their thermal properties couple very efficiently to global plasma dynamics and thermodynamics.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. This study aims to tackle the generalized coupled nonlinear Schrödinger ([math] – [math]) equations, with a focus on understanding their physical significance and stability, especially in the realm of plasma physics. These equations are crucial for grasping the complex dynamics of wave interactions within plasma systems, which are fundamental for phenomena like wave-particle interactions, turbulence, and magnetic confinement. We employ analytical methods such as the generalized rational ([math]at) and Khater II ([math]hat.II) techniques, along with characterizing the system using Hamiltonian principles, to carefully examine the stability of solutions. The relevance of this model extends across various plasma phenomena, including electromagnetic wave propagation, Langmuir wave dynamics, and plasma instabilities. By applying these analytical techniques, we derive solutions and investigate their stability using Hamiltonian dynamics, providing valuable insights into the fundamental behavior of nonlinear plasma waves. Our findings reveal the existence of stable solutions under specific conditions, thus advancing our understanding of plasma dynamics significantly. This research carries significant implications for fields such as plasma physics, astrophysics, and fusion research, where a deep understanding of plasma wave stability and dynamics is crucial. Essentially, our study represents a scholarly effort to offer fresh perspectives on the behavior of [math] – [math] equations within plasma systems, contributing to the academic discourse on plasma wave phenomena.

Abstract:This article utilizes the Lie symmetry method to analyze the -dimensional modified Zakharov–Kuznetsov (mZK) equation, which characterizes weakly nonlinear traveling waves in plasma with a constant magnetic field, comprising cold ions and hot isothermal electrons. The model is also applicable to dusty and magnetized plasma. Lie point symmetries and associated group invariant solutions are computed using Lie group theory, with the underlying equation. The improved -expansion method is then employed to derive soliton solutions, including hyperbolic, trigonometric, rational, and exponential forms. Graphic interpretations of specific solutions are provided. Nonlinear self-adjointness is used to compute non-local conservation laws in lower dimensions, and conservation laws are developed based on the equation's formal Lagrangian structure, applying Ibragimov's theorem. These findings highlight the novelty and reliability of the methodology employed.
