Abstract:This review begins with the standard Lie symmetry theory for nonlinear PDEs and explores extensions of symmetry analysis. First, it introduces three key symmetry reduction methods: the classical symmetry method, conditional symmetries, and the CK direct method. Next, it presents two finite symmetry transformation group methods—one related to Lax pairs and one independent of them. The fourth section reviews four nonlocal symmetry methods based on conserved forms, conformal invariants, Darboux transformations, and Lax pairs. The final section covers supersymmetry theory and supersymmetric dark equations. Each method is illustrated with examples and references.

Abstract:A certain non-Noetherian connection between symmetry and integrability properties of nonlinear field equations in conservation-law form is studied. It is shown that the symmetry condition alone may lead, in a rather straightforward way, to the construction of a Lax pair, a doubly infinite set of (generally nonlocal) conservation laws, and a recursion operator for symmetries. Applications include the chiral field equation and the self-dual Yang-Mills equation.

Symmetries of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations

Abstract:We consider higher symmetries and operator symmetries of linear partial differential equations. The higher symmetries form a Lie algebra, and operator ones form an associative algebra. The relationship between these symmetries is established. We show that symmetries of linear equations sometimes generate symmetries of nonlinear ones. New symmetries of two-dimensional stationary equations of gas dynamics are found.

Discovery of a nearby L-T transition object in the Southern Galactic plane

Abstract:We present the discovery of 2MASS J11263991-5003550 identified as part of an ongoing survey to discover ultra-cool dwarfs in the Southern Galactic Plane, using data from the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys. Strong FeH and H2O absorption features in the near-infrared JH-band spectrum reveal characteristics seen in both mid-L, and L-T transition type dwarfs. We suggest these may be attributable to holes in the condensate cloud layers in the atmosphere of a single sub-stellar object, but cannot at present completely rule out the role of binarity as the possible cause. We also identify this object as a blue L dwarf, and explore the similar observable characteristics of these objects with those of the L-T transition. From this comparison we suggest that the temperature (and thus spectral type) at which the condensate cloud later begins to break-up/rain out, may be highly sensitive to small variations in metallicity. However, the JH-band spectrum of this object does not resemble that of the known L sub-dwarfs, and therefore extreme metal deficiency may not in fact be responsible for the discordant features. We estimate a spectral type of L9+/-1, and measure a large proper-motion of \mu_(tot)=1.65"+/-0.03" per year. Also, a spectrophotometric distance of 8.2pc is estimated, possibly making this object the nearest easily observable single L-T transition object in the southern hemisphere.

Abstract:We study the application of generalized symmetry for reducing nonlinear partial differential equations. We construct the ansatzes for dependent variable $u$ which reduce the scalar partial differential equation with two independent variables to systems of ordinary differential equations. The operators of Lie-B\"acklund symmetry of the second order ordinary differential equation are used. We apply the method to nonlinear evolutionary equations and find solutions which cannot be obtained in the framework of classical Lie approach. The method is also applicable to partial differential equations which are not restricted to evolution type ones. We construct the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic equation depending on an arbitrary smooth function on one variable. We study also the correlation between the dimension of symmetry Lie algebra and possibility of constructing non-invariant solutions to the equation under study.

Abstract:Paradigms of nonlinear science may suggest that it is "the study of every single phenomenon" due to its interdisciplinary nature, which is a challenge requiring to be addressed by generating a systematic mathematical framework where the complexity of natural phenomena hints the requirement of identifying their commonalties and classifying their various manifestations in different nonlinear systems. Studying such common properties, concepts or paradigms can enable one to gain insight into nonlinear problems, their essence and consequences in a broad range of disciplines all forthwith. Fractional calculus manifests unforeseeable and hidden variations and enables integration and differentiation, with the solutions to be approximated by numerical methods along with modeling and predicting the dynamics of multiphysics, multiscale and physical systems. Neural Networks, consisting of hidden layers with nonlinear functions, are also considerably employed owing to their versatile and efficient characteristics in classification problems as well as their sophisticated neural network architectures, which make them capable of tackling complicated governing partial differential equation problems. Furthermore, partial differential equations are used to provide comprehensive and accurate models for many scientific phenomena owing to the advancements of data gathering and machine learning techniques which have raised opportunities for data-driven identification of governing equations derived from experimentally observed data. While many problems are solvable, efforts are needed to respond to the remaining open questions in fields ranging from mathematics, physics, biology, epidemiology, chemistry, engineering, social sciences to applied sciences. Our special issue provides a collection of recent research focusing on the advances in theory, methodology and applications of fractals, fractional calculus, fractional differential equations, differential equations, delay differential equations, chaos, bifurcation, stability, sensitivity, machine learning, quantum machine learning, and so forth to expound advanced fractional calculus, differential equations and neural networks with detailed analyses, models, simulations, data-driven approaches and numerical computations.

Abstract:Symmetry is a fundamental property of many natural systems, which is observable through signals. In most out-of-equilibrium complex dynamic systems, the observed signals are asymmetric. However, for certain operating modes, some systems have demonstrated a resurgence of symmetry in their signals. Research has naturally focused on examining time invariance to quantify this symmetry. Measures based on the statistical and harmonic properties of signals have been proposed, but most of them focused on harmonic distortion without explicitly measuring symmetry. This paper introduces a new mathematical framework based on group theory for analyzing signal symmetry beyond time invariance. It presents new indicators to evaluate different types of symmetry in non-stochastic symmetric signals. Both periodic and non-periodic symmetric signals are analyzed to formalize the problem. The study raises critical questions about the completeness of symmetry in signals and proposes a new classification for periodic and non-periodic signals that goes beyond the traditional classification based on Fourier coefficients. Furthermore, new measures such as "symmetrometry" and "distorsymmetry" are introduced to quantify symmetry. These measures outperform traditional indicators like Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and provide a more accurate measurement of symmetry in complex signals from applications where duty cycle plays a major role.

Abstract:The method of symmetry reduction is systematically applied to derive several classes of invariant solutions for the generalized Weierstrass system inducing constant mean curvature surfaces and to the associated two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model. A classification of subgroups with generic orbits of codimension one of the Lie point symmetry group for these systems provides a tool for introducing symmetry variables and reduces the initial systems to different nonequivalent systems of ordinary differential equations. We perform a singularity analysis for them in order to establish whether these ordinary differential equations have the Painlevé property. These ordinary differential equations can then be transformed to standard forms and next solved in terms of elementary and Jacobi elliptic functions. This results in a large number of new solutions and in some cases new interesting constant mean curvature surfaces are found. Furthermore, this symmetry analysis is extended to include conditional symmetries by subjecting the original system to certain differential constraints. In this case, several new types of nonsplitting algebraic, trigonometric, and hyperbolic multisoliton solutions have been obtained in explicit form. Some physical interpretation of these results in the areas of fluid membranes, string theory, two-dimensionl gravity, and cosmology are given.

Laurent series facilitate the expansion of fields into manageable terms, particularly around critical points. Residues provide a direct link between local field behavior and global physical properties, playing a crucial role in effective action formulations and renormalization processes. Winding numbers offer a topological perspective, quantifying how fields wrap around singularities and identifying stable topological structures like vortices, solitons, and monopoles. Abstract:The purpose of this work is to provide applications of real, complex, and functional analysis to moment, interpolation, functional equations, and optimization problems. Firstly, the existence of the unique solution for a two-dimensional full Markov moment problem is characterized on the upper half-plane. The issue of the unknown form of nonnegative polynomials on R×R+ in terms of sums of squares is solved using polynomial approximation by special nonnegative polynomials, which are expressible in terms of sums of squares. The main new element is the proof of Theorem 1, based only on measure theory and on a previous approximation-type result. Secondly, the previous construction of a polynomial solution is completed for an interpolation problem with a finite number of moment conditions, pointing out a method of determining the coefficients of the solution in terms of the given moments. Here, one uses methods of symmetric matrix theory. Thirdly, a functional equation having nontrivial solution (defined implicitly) and a consequence are discussed. Inequalities, the implicit function theorem, and elements of holomorphic functions theory are applied. Fourthly, the constrained optimization of the modulus of some elementary functions of one complex variable is studied. The primary aim of this work is to point out the importance of symmetry in the areas mentioned above.

Abstract:The theme issue surveys recent advances at the intersection between Applied and Computational Complex Analysis (ACCA) and the study of different nonlinear phenomena. While complex analysis has traditionally played an important role in the development of certain areas of physics, such as fluid and solid mechanics, in recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in new applications of complex analysis to many different areas. This renaissance has been largely driven by new development in complex analysis which include, but are not limited to, connections with classical, harmonic and asymptotic analysis, new methods based on integral transforms and conformal maps, as well as progress in the Wiener–Hopf and Riemann–Hilbert problems, These advances have been buttressed by parallel development of computational methods reflecting the fact that complex analysis has also come to play an important role in numerical analysis. In fluid mechanics, vortex dynamics continues to drive many new applications of complex analysis. New connections have been discovered between the Riemann–Hilbert problem and integrable hierarchies of partial differential equations (PDEs), Painlevé transcendents as well as problems in statistical mechanics. Rational approximations, orthogonal polynomials, tracking complex singularities in PDEs and conformal mappings have created new opportunities in the study of nonlinear problems.
