Abstract:A general, incomplete and partisan overview of various areas of the theoretical investigation is presented. Most of this activity stems from the search for physics beyond quantum field theory and general relativity, a titanic struggle that, in my opinion, empowered the symmetry principles to a dangerous level of speculation. In the works (that are my own) commented upon here the attempt has been to proceed by holding to certain epistemological pillars (usually absent from the too speculative theories) such as, e.g., four or less dimensions, proposals for experimental tests of radical ideas, wide cross-fertilization, etc.. As for the latter, the enterprise is undertaken within a theoretical perspective that pushes till condensed matter and even biology the cross-fertilization between ``branches of physics''.

Abstract:Significant progress has been made in recent years in constraining nuclear symmetry energy at and below the saturation density of nuclear matter using data from both terrestrial nuclear experiments and astrophysical observations. However, many interesting questions remain to be studied especially at supra-saturation densities. In this lecture note, after a brief summary of the currently available constraints on nuclear symmetry energy near the saturation density we first discuss the relationship between the symmetry energy and the isopin and momentum dependence of the single-nucleon potential in isospin-asymmetric nuclear medium. We then discuss several open issues regarding effects of the tensor force induced neutron-proton short-range correlation (SRC) on nuclear symmetry energy. Finally, as an example of the impacts of nuclear symmetry energy on properties of neutron stars and gravitational waves, we illustrate effects of the high-density symmetry energy on the tidal polarizability of neutron stars in coalescing binaries.

On the symmetries of elementary fermions

Abstract:This paper deals with the symmetries of elementary fermions and their derivation from fundamental physical principles such as the Lorentz invariance and from the spinor-helicity formalism employed to three-vectors. The generators of the Lorentz group are discussed, and the physics of the associated chiral spins is used to establish the chiral symmetry SU (2). The helicity of spin is defined which, when being applied to the hadronic isospin, yields the symmetry group SU (4). The Kronecker product of these two basic symmetries defines a unified symmetry of the basic light fermions, namely the chiral doublets of the single lepton and triple quarks of the first family. Breaking this symmetry, according to mechanisms that are used in the electroweak interactions of the Standard Model (SM) of quantum field theory, yields quantum electrodynamics (QED) with symmetry group U (1), weak interactions with symmetry group SU (2), and what we like to name quantum hadrodynamics (QHD, akin to quantum chromodynamics QCD of the SM) with symmetry group SU (3). The gauge bosons associated with QED and QHD remain massless, but the weak bosons and the V bosons, related to the transformation of the quarks into a lepton and vice versa, become massive by the Higgs mechanism. Their masses are defined by the Higgs vacuum and the two coupling constants involved in the unified model. The V -boson mass is predicted to be 35.4 GeV. Furthermore, a possible explanation of hadron confinement is given in terms of the two hadronic charge operators. Moreover, the concept of hypercharge as used in the SM is not needed. Various versions of the extended Dirac equation that include the above symmetry groups are derived.

Abstract:Inspiring ourselves by the assumption that the notion of symmetry itself is insufficient to construct the consistent physics of the Desert (the so-called region of energies beyond the Standard Model) and some additional insights are needed, we suggests that high-energy theories must take into account the higher-order variations of fields. With this in mind we propose the generalization of the concepts of kinetic energy and free particle. It is shown that the theory founded on such principles reveals major features of the genuinely high-energy one, first of all, it appears to be free from ultra-violet divergences, even the self-energy loop terms become finite. Also we discuss other arising interesting phenomena such as the high-gradient currents and charges, unified ``all-in-one'' multi-mass states, VR symmetry, regularization-without-renormalization of SM, etc.

Abstract:The standard model (SM) of particle physics is the mathematical description of the fundamental constituents and interactions of matter. Its last missing particle, the Higgs boson, was observed in 2012. However, there are several phenomena that the SM cannot account for (such as dark-matter particles, or non-vanishing neutrino masses), neither does it describe gravity. There must be more to discover, to extend the SM into a full description of nature. Here we review the hints of new physics, called anomalies, that are seen for various interactions as discrepancies between standard-model predictions and experimental measurements. We consider both direct high-energy searches for new particles at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and indirect low-energy precision experiments. These anomalies span an energy scale of more than four orders of magnitude: from the mass of the proton, to the electroweak scale (approximately the mass of the Higgs boson), to the teraelectronvolt scale, which is the highest scale directly accessible at the Large Hadron Collider. We discuss the experimental and theoretical status of various anomalies and summarize possible explanations in terms of new particles and new interactions as well as discovery prospects. We suggest, in particular, that new additional Higgs bosons and so-called leptoquarks are promising candidates for extending the standard model.

Abstract:Low-energy tests of fundamental symmetries and studies of neutrino properties provide a powerful window on physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this article, we provide a basic theoretical framework for a subsequent set of articles that review the progress and opportunities in various aspects of the low-energy program. We illustrate the physics reach of different low-energy probes in terms of an effective BSM mass scale and illustrate how this reach matches and, in some cases, even exceeds that accessible at the high energy frontier.

Schrödinger Symmetry in Gravitational Mini-Superspaces

Abstract:We prove that the simplest gravitational symmetry reduced models describing cosmology and black holes mechanics are invariant under the Schrödinger group. We consider the flat FRW cosmology filled with a massless scalar field and the Schwarzschild black hole mechanics, construct their conserved charges using the Eisenhart-Duval (ED) lift method and show that they form a Schrödinger algebra. Our method illustrates how the ED lift and the more standard approach analyzing the geometry of the field space are complementarity in revealing different set of symmetries of these systems. We further identify an infinite-dimensional symmetry for those two models, generated by conserved charges organized in two copies of a Witt algebra. These extended charge algebras provide a new algebraic characterization of these homogeneous gravitational sectors. They guide the path to their quantization and open the road to non-linear extensions of quantum cosmology and quantum black holes models in terms of hydrodynamic equations in field space.

Abstract:Recent work on the symmetry energies of nuclear matter at suprasaturation densities by the ab initio Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations as well as the nonrelativistic and relativistic state-of-the-art density functional theories is reviewed, which was motivated by the historical detection of gravitational waves from GW170817. By investigating the neutron star and the neutron drop, i.e., a certain number of neutrons confined in an external field, strong correlations are found between the neutron star tidal deformability and the symmetry energies of nuclear matter at supra-saturation densities. From the correlations and the upper limit on the tidal deformability extracted from GW170817, the symmetry energy at twice saturation density is constrained by the ab initio Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory and the state-of-the-art density functional theories.
Gauging Flavor Symmetries of the Standard Model: from Dark Energy to Matter-Antimatter Asymmetry from Higher Dimensions in the Early Universe

Abstract:The Standard Model of Elementary Particle Physics has global Family flavor symmetries corresponding to the 3 families in the Standard Model. It has been shown that the breaking of these symmetries at low energy produces Dark Energy which is the dominant component of the energy density of the Universe. It has also been shown that this model of Dark Energy not only explains the accelerated expansion of the universe but has additional observational consequences and makes verifiable predictions. This model allows a space-time dependent Dark Energy as indicated by recent observations. Further, the collapse of space dependent Dark Energy configurations leads to the formation of Dark Energy Black Holes resulting in verifiable predictions. We examine the implications of these symmetries at high energies and in the Early Universe. We consider what might happen if these global symmetries get gauged and that the global symmetries today are just a consequence of the gauge fields acquiring a constant vacuum expectation value below some energy scale v. Since, we have not yet seen signatures of such gauge fields at any of our particle accelerators, this would imply that v is greater than the electroweak scale. In the early Universe, when these gauge fields would be dynamical, the Higgs would not yet have acquired a non-zero vacuum expectation value and all Standard Model particles would be massless. The gauging of these global symmetries is desirable from a high energy and quantum gravity perspective. The chiral dynamics has a natural interpretation in terms of D Branes and our 4-dimensional Universe embedded in higher dimensions. Anomaly cancellation in this scenario results from the sum of the cubic terms vanishing. Finally, the analysis in this article can provide an explanation for one of the long standing mysteries of the natural world: the matter - antimatter asymmetry observed in our Universe.

Abstract:Quantum theory, general relativity, the standard model of particle physics, and the $\Lambda$CDM model of cosmology have all been spectacularly successful within their respective regimes of applicability, but each of these descriptions also has clear limitations. Here we propose a fundamental theory which (like string theory) is based on higher dimensions (with an internal space), a form of supersymmetry, important topological structures, and the implication of a multiverse. Our universe is the product of two vortex-like (or instanton-like) field configurations -- one in 4-dimensional external spacetime, with the big bang at its origin, and the other in a 10-dimensional internal space, which automatically yields an $SO(10)$ grand-unified gauge theory. Lorentz invariance requires a breaking of the initial primitive supersymmetry, as the initial (unphysical) bosonic fields are modified and combined to from physical fields. There is then a new interpretation of all scalar boson sectors -- including but extending the Higgs and sfermion sectors. This last feature predicts a novel dark matter WIMP with no (nongravitational) interactions except second-order gauge couplings to $W$ and $Z$ bosons. Calculations and estimates of the relevant cross-sections for this particle demonstrate that (1)~it may be detectable within the next few years in Xe-based direct-detection experiments, (2)~it may be observable within about 15 years at the high-luminosity LHC, and (3)~it may already have been detected in the gamma rays observed by Fermi-LAT and antiprotons observed by AMS-02. The reinterpretation of scalar boson fields also implies a new phenomenology for sfermions, with reduced cross-sections. There is then a unified picture which may explain why dark matter WIMPs and electroweak-scale sparticles have not yet been detected.

Abstract:Nuclear saturation and the symmetry energy are key properties of low-energy nuclear physics that depend on fine details of the nuclear interaction. The equation of state around saturation is also an important anchor for extrapolations to higher densities and studies of neutron stars. Here we develop a unified statistical framework that uses realistic nuclear forces to link the theoretical modeling of finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter. We construct fast and accurate emulators for nuclear-matter observables and employ an iterative history-matching approach to explore and reduce the enormous parameter domain of Δ -full chiral interactions. On the manifestation of chiral symmetry in nuclei and dense nuclear matter

Abstract:This article reviews our view on how chiral symmetry, its pattern of breaking and restoration under extreme conditions manifest themselves in the nucleon, nuclei, nuclear matter and dense hadronic matter. We discuss how first-principle (QCD) calculations of the properties of finite nuclei can be effectuated by embedding the “standard nuclear physics approach (SNPA)” into the framework of effective field theories of nuclei that incorporate chiral dynamics and then exploit the predictive power of the theory to accurately compute such solar neutrino processes as the proton–proton fusion and the “hep” process and such cosmological nucleosynthesis process as thermal neutron–proton capture etc. The Brown–Rho (BR) scaling that implements chiral symmetry property of baryon-rich medium is re-interpreted in terms of “vector manifestation” of hidden local symmetry à la Harada–Yamawaki. We present a clear direct evidence and a variety of indirect evidences for BR scaling in nuclear processes at normal nuclear matter density probed by weak and electromagnetic fields and at higher density probed by heavy-ion collisions and compact-star observables. We develop the notion of “broadband equilibration” in heavy-ion processes and sharpen the role of strangeness in the formation of compact stars and their collapse into black-holes. We revisit the Cheshire Cat phenomenon first discovered in the skyrmion structure of baryons and more recently revived in the form of “quark–hadron continuity” in mapping low-density structure of hadrons to high-density structure of quarks and gluons and argue once more for the usefulness and power of effective field theories based on chiral symmetry under extreme conditions. It is shown how color–flavor locking in terms of QCD variables and hidden local symmetry in terms of hadronic variables can be connected and how BR scaling fits into this “continuity” scheme exhibiting a novel aspect of the Cheshire Cat phenomenon.

Abstract:I discuss some central issues in particle physics which are potentially relevant to cosmology. I first briefly review the present (glorious) experimental status of the Standard Model, emphasizing that it provides a firm foundation both for early Universe cosmology and for further exploration toward the basic laws of Nature. I then provide a critique, arguing that while there are no clear discrepancies, there are several major, specific deficiencies of the Standard Model which clearly point up its provisional character. I elaborate on the story theorists have made up to address one of these problems, the problem of scattered multiplets, and show how upon following it out one finds, within existing experiments, encouragement -- bordering on evidence -- for certain ambitious ideas regarding unification and supersymmetry. I briefly describe and contrast two paradigms of supersymmetry breaking, which have markedly different experimental and cosmological consequences. I call attention to specific connections with cosmology where appropriate throughout; and near the end I make some more global remarks. Finally I venture a speculation suggesting, in a fairly concrete way, the possibility that the laws of physics cannot, in principle, be disentangled from cosmology.

Abstract:The equation of state (EoS) of asymmetric nuclear matter at high densities is a key topic for the description of matter inside neutron stars. The determination of the properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, such as the symmetry energy ($a_{sym}$) and the slope of the symmetry energy ($L_0$) at saturation density, has been exaustively studied in order to better constrain the nuclear matter EoS. However, differently from symmetric matter properties that are reasonably constrained, the symmetry energy and its slope still large uncertainties in their experimental values. Regarding this subject, some studies point towards small values of the slope of the symmetry energy, while others suggest rather higher values. Such a lack of agreement raised a certain debate in the scientific community. In this paper, we aim to analyse the role of these properties on the behavior of asymmetric hyperonic matter. Using the formalism presented in Ref. (R.O. Gomes et al 2014}, which considers many-body forces contributions in the meson-baryon coupling, we calculate the EoS of asymmetric hyperonic matter and apply it to describe hyperonic matter and hyperon stars.
