Abstract:The phase-field method has become the main computational technique for modeling and predicting the microstructure evolution in materials science and engineering. Its versatility and ability to capture complex microstructure phenomena under different processing conditions make it a valuable tool for researchers and engineers in advancing our understanding and engineering of materials microstructures and properties. This issue of MRS Bulletin is focused on a few recent success stories of applying the phase-field method to understanding, discovering, and designing mesoscale structures and for guiding the design of experiments to optimize properties or discover new phenomena or functionalities. We hope this issue will inspire increasing future focus on utilizing the phase-field method to guide experimental synthesis and characterization for desirable properties.

Abstract:Using the advantage of phase field crystal model in microstructure evolution, we simulated the details of two-dimensional triangular phase on atomic scale and diffusion time scale. The results show that the annihilation process of grain boundaries can be divided into three stages. The energy changes of the system at different stages are accurately calculated and the process is quantitatively analyzed. By comparing the atomic density distributions at different temperatures and orientation angles, it is shown that the grain boundary is sensitive to temperature. Within the range of low-angle, the increase of orientation angle inhibits the occurrence of annihilation and decreases the grain boundary migration rate. Under the applied stress, the orientation angle has a certain response relationship with the yield strength of the material. This work has some practical significance in the influence of microstructure on the mechanical properties of materials.

Abstract:The electron-electron correlation in low-dimensional inorganic solid materials leads to many novel phase transition behaviors, such as metal-insulator transition, superconductivity, charge density wave and giant magnetoresistance effect, etc. Adjusting parameters by external fields can change the equilibrium relationship between ordered phases, realize the phase transition between different competing phases, and induce new physical properties and even new quantum critical phenomena. These phase-transition materials have great potential to be used in advanced electronic components and smart response devices in the future. It is known that low-dimensional inorganic phase-transition solids have large specific surface area and electronic correlation effects. Surface chemical modification opens up a new research space for the regulation of their phase transitions and complex interactions, which is not only helpful to explore physical laws and new quantum orders of low-dimensional correlated electron systems, but also of great significance to understand the microscopic origin of these complex physical phenomena. In this review, we focus on a series of recent advances about the regulation of phase transitions of low-dimensional inorganic solids by surface chemical modification strategies, and investigate their smart response to external light and magnetism under the limited dimension.
Nanoscale Phase Boundaries: a New Twist to Novel Functionalities.

Abstract:In functional materials, nanoscale phase boundaries exhibit exotic phenomena that are notably absent in their parent phases. Over the past two decades, much of the research into complex oxides (such as cuprate superconductors, CMR manganites and relaxor ferroelectrics) has demonstrated the key role that nanoscale inhomogeneities play in controlling the electronic and/or ionic structure of these materials. One of the key characteristics in such systems is the strong susceptibility to external perturbations, such as magnetic, electric and mechanical fields. A direct consequence of the accommodation of a large number of cationic substitutions in complex oxides is the emergence of a number of physical phenomena from essentially the same crystal framework. Recently, multiferroic behavior, which is characterized by the co-existence and potential coupling of multiple ferroic order parameters, has captured considerable worldwide research interest. The perovskite, BiFeO3, exhibits robust ferroelectricity coupled with antiferromagnetism at room temperature. A rather unique feature of this material system is its ability to "morph" its ground state when an external mechanical constraint is imposed on it. A particularly striking example is observed when a large (similar to 4 to 5%) compressive strain is imposed on a thin film through the epitaxial constraint from the underlying substrate. Under these conditions, the ground state rhombohedral phase transforms into a tetragonal-like (or a derivative thereof) phase with a rather large unit cell (c/a ratio of similar to 1.26). When the epitaxial constraint is partially relaxed by increasing the film thickness, this tetragonal-like phase evolves into a "mixed-phase" state, consisting of a nanoscale admixture of the rhombohedral-like phase embedded in the tetragonal-like phase. Such a system gives us a new pathway to explore a variety of mechanical, magnetic and transport phenomena in constrained dimensions. This article reviews our progress to date in this direction and also captures some possible areas of future research. We use the electromechanical response and the magnetic properties as examples to illustrate that its novel functionalities are intrinsically due to the phase boundaries and not the constituent phases. The possible origin of the giant piezoelectric response and enhanced magnetic moment across the boundaries is proposed based on the flexoelectric and flexomagnetic effects.

Abstract:The structural transformation of materials, which involvestheevolution of different structural features, including phase, composition,morphology, etc., under external conditions, represents an importantfundamental phenomenon and has drawn substantial research interest.Recently, materials with unconventional phases that are differentfrom their thermodynamically stable ones have been demonstrated topossess distinct properties and compelling functions and can furtherserve as starting materials for structural transformation studies.The identification and mechanism study of the structural transformationprocess of unconventional-phase starting materials can not only providedeep insights into their thermodynamic stability in potential applicationsbut also offer effective approaches for the synthesis of other unconventionalstructures. Here, we briefly summarize the recent research progresson the structural transformation of some typical starting materialswith various unconventional phases, including the metastable crystallinephase, amorphous phase, and heterophase, induced by different approaches.The importance of unconventional-phase starting materials in the structuralmodulation of resultant intermediates and products will be highlighted.The employment of diverse in situ/operando characterization techniques and theoretical simulations in studyingthe mechanism of the structural transformation process will also beintroduced. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges in this emergingresearch field and provide some future research directions.

Abstract:This special topic in JOM, Phase Stability, Phase Transformations, and Reactive Phase Formation, is sponsored by the Alloy Phases Committee and presents fi ve articles. In the fi rst paper, K. Suganuma and coworkers, from Osaka University, Japan, give a comprehensive overview of high-temperature lead-free solders including their properties and phase formation. High-temperature, lead-free soldering is a key technology for electronics components and assemblies, and requires a high level of process control. The interconnections must withstand temperatures beyond 250oC for a short period and offer high reliability against thermal cycling as well as good heat dissipation. Therefore, a robust design concept is needed based on materials science in order to obtain the new technology. Y.-C. Wu et al., from National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, study phase ordering transformation of L1 0 ordered FePt fi lm by controlling stress and diffusion. The ordering process of a disordered FePt is controlled by a kinetic process. The paper proposes several ways to accelerate phase transformation at low temperature. An extra driving force for diffusion was provided by ion irradiation or dynamic stress; the diffusion length was diminished by using atomic-scale multilayer deposition. In addition, the novel sputtering scheme, atomic-scale multilayer deposition, can effectively promote the (001) texture of L1 0 FePt grown on amorphous substrates without any underlayer J.P. Chu from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan, reports an interesting phase transformation phenomenon, annealing-induced amorphization in a copper-based (Cu 51 Zr 42 Al 4 Ti 3 ) glass-forming thin fi lm. Chu found that upon annealing in the supercooled liquid region, a fully amorphous structure is developed and this leads to a softening this study, suffer from lower toughness caused by secondary phase precipitation especially when these steels undergo thermal treatments. In this study the infl uence of thermal treatment parameters on the precipitation of these secondary phases was investigated. A phase is a homogeneous region of matter and is the building block of materials. Different spatial arrangements of molecules lead to different phases and result in different materials properties. These fi ve articles clearly indicate that “phases” are important for all kinds of materials including structural materials, magnetic materials, glasses, and electronic materials. It can be noticed as well that the contributors are from different regions of the world. As one of the oldest committees in TMS, the Alloy Phases Committee clearly indicates the very early awareness of the importance of “phase” in material studies by the TMS members. The Alloy Phases Committee has also sponsored a Phase Stability, Phase Transformations, and Reactive Phase Formation in Electronic Materials symposium at the TMS Annual Meeting for eight consecutive years. In the foreword of the January 2009 Journal of Electronic Materials special issue, it is mentioned that the internationalized “phase” ( , , фаза, fase, faza) is the key word. The same globalized spirit should be shared. Although it might not necessarily get hotter and more crowded, the world of materials science has undoubtedly become more fl attened, and global cooperation will be the key for the future.

Abstract:<p>The correlation between structure and function lies at the heart of materials science and engineering. Especially, modern functional materials usually contain inhomogeneities at an atomic level, endowing them with interesting properties regarding electrons, phonons, and magnetic moments. Over the past few decades, many of the key developments in functional materials have been driven by the rapid advances in short‐range crystallographic techniques. Among them, pair distribution function (PDF) technique, capable of utilizing the entire Bragg and diffuse scattering signals, stands out as a powerful tool for detecting local structure away from average. With the advent of synchrotron X‐rays, spallation neutrons, and advanced computing power, the PDF can quantitatively encode a local structure and in turn guide atomic‐scale engineering in the functional materials. Here, the PDF investigations in a range of functional materials are reviewed, including ferroelectrics/thermoelectrics, colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) magnets, high‐temperature superconductors (HTSC), quantum dots (QDs), nano‐catalysts, and energy storage materials, where the links between functions and structural inhomogeneities are prominent. For each application, a brief description of the structure‐function coupling will be given, followed by selected cases of PDF investigations. Before that, an overview of the theory, methodology, and unique power of the PDF method will be also presented.</p>

Abstract:As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e. , the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have attracted increasing interest because of their compelling physicochemical properties and promising applications. Recent studies have demonstrated that phases of nanomaterials could significantly affect their properties and applications because of the distinct atomic arrangements. Besides crystalline phases, the amorphous nanomaterials, which lack long-range atomic ordering, and heterophase nanostructures consisting of more than one phase have also shown enhanced performances in some specific applications. Recently, with the rapid development in phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), the controlled synthesis of 2D nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the exploration of phase-dependent properties and applications have been witnessed. In this perspective, we briefly summarize the research progress on 2D nanomaterials with unconventional phases, including unconventional crystal phases, amorphous phase, and heterophase. On the basis of different material categories, we highlight their synthetic methodologies, unique structures, and intriguing properties. Finally, we provide personal insights on challenges and potential research opportunities in this emerging field.

The Phase Stability Network of all Inorganic Materials

Abstract:One of the holy grails of materials science, unlocking structure-property relationships, has largely been pursued via bottom-up investigations of how the arrangement of atoms and interatomic bonding in a material determine its macroscopic behavior. Here we consider a complementary approach, a top-down study of the organizational structure of networks of materials, based on the interaction between materials themselves. We unravel the complete "phase stability network of all inorganic materials" as a densely-connected complex network of 21,000 thermodynamically stable compounds (nodes) interlinked by 41 million tie-lines (edges) defining their two-phase equilibria, as computed by high-throughput density functional theory. We find that the node connectivity in the materials network has a lognormal distribution, and the connectivity decreases with the number of elemental constituents in a material. Analyzing the topology of this network of materials has the potential to uncover new knowledge inaccessible from traditional atoms-to-materials paradigms. Using the connectivity of nodes in the phase stability network, we derive a rational, data-driven metric for material reactivity, the "nobility index", and quantitatively identify the noblest materials in nature.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with multiphase, multielement crystals such as transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) (based on V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pt and Pd) and transition metal phosphorous chalcogenides (TMPCs) offer a unique platform to explore novel physical phenomena. However, the synthesis of a single-phase/single-composition crystal of these 2D materials via chemical vapour deposition is still challenging. Here we unravel a competitive-chemical-reaction-based growth mechanism to manipulate the nucleation and growth rate. Based on the growth mechanism, 67 types of TMCs and TMPCs with a defined phase, controllable structure and tunable component can be realized. The ferromagnetism and superconductivity in FeX y can be tuned by the y value, such as superconductivity observed in FeX and ferromagnetism in FeS 2 monolayers, demonstrating the high quality of as-grown 2D materials. This work paves the way for the multidisciplinary exploration of 2D TMPCs and TMCs with unique properties.

Abstract:Perspective in phase transformation studies,such as theory and experiment of barrier-free nucleation is discussed.Since morphology is closely related to the properties of materials,a brief suggestion on the development of <Materials Morphology> or <Study of Morphology in Materials> is emphasized.Works on relationships between the undercooling or transformation temperature and interlamellar spacing of pearlite and the effect of morphology(interlamellar spacing) on the strength of pearlite in eutectoid steel are reviewed.This article gives quantitative description of the relationship of the undercooling to the strength of pearlite.

Abstract:Mesoscopic phase transitions and critical behaviour of nanostructured materials are discussed, together with the design of computer experimental systems and the synthesis and control of functional properties. The systems considered here have either two or three-dimensional structural, magnetic or fractured character with nanometre-sized grains and interfaces. The interactions are taken into account up to the third nearest neighbour by means of Lennard-Jones-like potentials. The following problems are studied; how to investigate nanostructured materials, how to compute the metastable mesoscopic behaviour, and how to construct suitable computer experimental systems by Monte-Carlo methods. Building Materials Genome from Ground-State Configuration to Engineering Advance

Abstract:Individual phases are commonly considered as the building blocks of materials. However, the accurate theoretical prediction of properties of individual phases remains elusive. The top-down approach by decoding genomic building blocks of individual phases from experimental observations is non-unique. The density functional theory (DFT), as the state-of-the-art solution of quantum mechanics, prescribes the existence of a ground-state configuration at zero K for a given system. It is self-evident that the ground-state configuration alone is insufficient to describe a phase at finite temperatures as symmetry-breaking non-ground-state configurations are excited statistically at temperatures above zero K. Our multi-scale entropy approach (recently terms as Zentropy theory) postulates that the entropy of a phase is composed of the sum of the entropy of each configuration weighted by its probability plus the configurational entropy among all configurations. Consequently, the partition function of each configuration in statistical mechanics needs to be evaluated by its free energy rather than total energy. The combination of the ground- and non-ground-state configurations represents the building blocks of materials and can quantitively predict free energy of individual phases with the free energies of ground- and non-ground-state configurations predicted from DFT, plus all properties derived from free energy of individual phases.

Abstract:Phase-field method is a density-based computational method at the mesoscale for modeling and predicting the temporal microstructure and property evolution during materials processes. The focus of this article is on connecting the most common phase-field equations to the very basic first and second laws of classical thermodynamics through rudimentary irreversible thermodynamics. It briefly discusses the relations of the continuum phase-field equations to their counter parts at the microscopic and atomic levels. It attempts to clarify the contributions of long-range elastic, electrostatic, and magnetic interactions to domain structure evolution during structural, ferroelectric, and ferromagnetic phase transformations by separating order parameter changes due to the presence of quasi-static fields and those arising from phase transformations. A few examples are presented to demonstrate the possibility of employing the phase-field method to provide guidance to designing materials for optimum properties or discovering novel mesoscale phenomena or new materials functionalities. The article ends with a brief perspective on a number of potential future directions on the development and applications of phase-field method beyond its traditional applications to structural alloys.

Abstract:Phase transformations at the nanoscale display interesting and important differences from those which occur in the bulk of most materials systems. These differences occur in a large variety of transformations, including melting, solid state phase transformation, chemical ordering and disordering, and chemical and electrochemical transformations. They arise from both the thermodynamic contribution of surface energy as well as the kinetic influence of small diffusion distances. These changes in the energetics and dynamics of transformation can prove important for a variety of technologies, including energy storage, energy conversion, and information technologies.

Abstract:The beginning of the XXI-st century can be seen as the start of a revolution in nanomaterials and nanotechnology which has already an impact on everyday life; this impact will grow rapidly in the near future. The need for international but also interdisciplinary cooperation and dissemination of knowledge in the field of nanoscale science and engineering is also becoming increasingly apparent. The common efforts of researchers from different countries and fields of science can bring complementary expertise to solve the rising problems in order to take the advantages of the nanoscale approach in materials sciences. Nanostructured materials are becoming of major significance, and their investigations require a comprehensive approach. The fundamental properties of these materials are remarkably altered as the size of their constituent grains or phases decreases to the nanometer scale. These novel materials made of nanosized building blocks offer unique and entirely different electrical, optical, mechanical, and magnetic properties compared to conventional micro- or millimetre-size materials owing to their distinctive size, shape, topology, surface properties, etc.
