Abstract:Multiferroics are materials that simultaneously exhibit more than one ferroic order parameters, such as ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism. Recently, multiferroicity has received a significant revival of interest due to the colossal magnetoelectric coupling effect for the development of nano-ferronics. In this mini-review, we focus on a recent study of ferroelectricity, magnetism and magnetoelectric coupling within the newly discovered organic charge-transfer complexes. A systemic understanding of the origin of organic ferroelectricity and magnetism is provided. Furthermore, based on the recent mechanism of the magnetoelectric coupling effect: spin-ordering-induced electric polarization and ferroelectricity-induced spin alignment, we further present the recent progress in organic charge-transfer multiferroics and metal-organic framework multiferroics. The coexistence of polarization and magnetism at room temperature of organic charge-transfer complexes will be critical for the development of all-organic multiferroics.

Abstract:In metal-organic-framework (MOF) perovskites, both magnetic and ferroelectric orderings can be readily realized by compounding spin and charge degrees of freedom. The hydrogen bonds that bridge the magnetic framework and organic molecules have long been thought of as a key in generating multiferroic properties. However, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we combine neutron diffraction, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and THz spectroscopy techniques to thoroughly investigate the dynamical properties of the multiferroic MOF candidate [CH3NH3][Co(HCOO)3] through its multiple phase transitions. The wide range of energy resolutions reachable by these techniques enables us to scrutinize the coupling between the molecules and the framework throughout the phase transitions and interrogate a possible magnetoelectric coupling. Our results also reveal a structural change around 220 K, which may be associated with the activation of a nodding donkey mode of the methylammonium molecule due to the ordering of the CH3 groups. Upon the occurrence of the modulated phase transition around 130 K, the methylammonium molecule undergoes a freezing of its reorientational motions, which is concomitant with a change of the lattice parameters and anomalies of collective lattice vibrations. Abstract:A family of three-dimensional chiral metal formate frameworks of [NH4][M(HCOO)(3)] (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn) displays paraelectric to ferroelectric phase transitions between 191 and 254 K, triggered by disorder order transitions of NH4+ cations and their displacement within the framework channels, combined with spin-canted antiferromagnetic ordering within 8-30 K for the magnetic members, providing a new class of metal-organic frameworks showing the coexistence of magnetic and electric orderings.

Abstract:Three novel microporous three-dimensional (3-D) metal-organic framework materials [ML](n) [M = Ni, Co, Cd; L = N,N'-bis(4-picolinoyl)hydrazine] were obtained from hydrothermal reactions. The organic ligand L was formed through the in situ ring-opening hydrolysis reaction of 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole with the assistance of metal ions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that complexes 1-3 adopt 6-connected 3-D networks of distorted alpha-Po topology, which are built from non-interpenetrated (4,4) grids cross-linked by zigzag chains. These isomorphic complexes are all of high thermal stability, but some other physical properties are quite different because of their different metal centers. Antiferromagnetic exchange was observed between Ni(II) centers of complex 1, while ferromagnetic for Co(II) centers of complex 2. Complex 3 exhibits strong fluorescence emission.

Abstract:Metal−organic frameworks exhibit a plethora of emergent phenomena including strong correlations, superconductivity, charge density wave, long‐range magnetic order, and quantum spin liquid. They may bring new opportunities and perspectives to emergent physics. Many‐body interactions in condensed matter could lead to emergent phenomena spanning superconductivity, ferromagnetism, exciton condensation, etc. The emergence of these phenomena often requires highly ordered spatial arrangements of the interacting species to enforce specific space symmetries and interacting strengths. Metal−organic frameworks (MOFs), crystalline materials formed by self‐assembly of metal ions and organic ligands, allow for precise design of their crystal structures and sophisticated tuning of Coulombic interaction or magnetic coupling among lattice sites. Such atomic‐level designability combined with high crystallinity and versatile types of lattices (e.g., kagome and honeycomb lattices) render MOFs as a great platform to investigate emergent physics. In this Emerging Topic, we summarize recent studies evidencing emergent phenomena in MOFs including strong correlations, superconductivity, charge density wave, long‐range magnetic order, and quantum spin liquid. We highlight the great potential of MOFs as quantum materials and discuss challenges including growth of high‐quality single crystals and in‐depth physical characterizations to reveal insights into the nature of physical properties of MOFs. Magnetoelectric coupling in the paramagnetic state of a metal-organic framework

Abstract:Although the magnetoelectric effects - the mutual control of electric polarization by magnetic fields and magnetism by electric fields, have been intensively studied in a large number of inorganic compounds and heterostructures, they have been rarely observed in organic materials. Here we demonstrate magnetoelectric coupling in a metal-organic framework [(CH3)2NH2]Mn(HCOO)3 which exhibits an order-disorder type of ferroelectricity below 185 K. The magnetic susceptibility starts to deviate from the Curie-Weiss law at the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition temperature, suggesting an enhancement of short-range magnetic correlation in the ferroelectric state. Electron spin resonance study further confirms that the magnetic state indeed changes following the ferroelectric phase transition. Inversely, the ferroelectric polarization can be improved by applying high magnetic fields. We interpret the magnetoelectric coupling in the paramagnetic state in the metal-organic framework as a consequence of the magnetoelastic effect that modifies both the superexchange interaction and the hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:Finding new two-dimensional (2D) materials with novel quantum properties is highly desirable for technological innovations. In this work, we studied a series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal cores and discovered various attractive properties, such as room-temperature magnetic ordering, strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, huge topological band gap (>200meV), and excellent spin-filtering performance. As many MOFs have been successfully synthesized in experiments, our results suggest realistic new 2D functional materials for the design of spintronic nanodevices.

Abstract:Unlike inorganic crystals, metal-organic frameworks do not have a well-developed nanostructure library, and establishing their appropriately diverse and complex architectures remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate a general route to control metal-organic framework structure by a solvent-assisted ligand exchange approach. Thirteen different types of metal-organic framework structures have been prepared successfully. To demonstrate a proof of concept application, we used the obtained metal-organic framework materials as precursors for synthesizing nanoporous carbons and investigated their electrochemical Na + storage properties. Due to the unique architecture, the one-dimensional nanoporous carbon derived from double-shelled ZnCo bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework nanotubes exhibits high specific capacity as well as superior rate capability and cycling stability. Our study offers an avenue for the controllable preparation of well-designed meta-organic framework structures and their derivatives, which would further broaden the application opportunities of metal-organic framework materials.

Abstract:Multiferroics and magnetoelectrics with coexisting and coupled multiple ferroic orders are materials promising new technological advances. While most studies have focused on single-phase or heterostructures of inorganic materials, a new class of materials called metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been recently proposed as candidate materials demonstrating interesting new routes for multiferroism and magnetoelectric coupling. Herein, we report on the origin of multiferroicity of (CH3)2NH2Mn(HCOO)3 via direct observation of ferroelectric domains using second-harmonic generation techniques. For the first time, we observe how these domains are organized (sized in micrometer range), and how they are mutually affected by applied electric and magnetic fields. Calculations provide an estimate of the electric polarization and give insights into its microscopic origin.

Abstract:A quenching-triggered reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) phase transition was discovered in a metal-organic framework (MOF) PCN-526. During the phase transition, the one-dimensional channel of PCN-526 distorts from square to rectangular in shape while maintaining single crystallinity. Although SC-SC transformations have been frequently observed in MOFs, most reports have focused on describing the resulting structural alterations without shedding light on the mechanism for the transformation. Interestingly, modifying the occupancy or species of metal ions in the extra-framework sites, which provides mechanistic insight into the causes for the transformation, can forbid this phase transition. Moreover, as a host scaffold, PCN-526 presents a platform for modulation of the photoluminescence properties by encapsulation of luminescent guest molecules. Through judicious choice of these guest molecules, responsive luminescence caused by SC-SC transformations can be detected, introducing a new strategy for the design of novel luminescent MOF materials.

Abstract:We predict the magnetic and electronic properties of a novel metal-organic framework. By combining density functional theory and density matrix renormalization group approaches, we find the diatomic Kagome crystal structure of the metal-semiquinoid framework (H$_2$NMe$_2$)$_2$M$_2$(Cl$_2$dhbq)$_3$ (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) to host a rich variety of antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) Dirac semimetallic, spin-polarized Dirac fermions, and flat band magnetic insulators and metallic phases. Concomitantly, the spin excitation spectrum of the various magnetic systems display multiple Dirac-like and nodal-ring crossings. This suggests that the metal-semiquinoid system is an ideal platform for examining the intertwining of Dirac fermions and magnons.

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations have been performed for the structural, electronic, magnetic, and ferroelectric properties of a mixed-valence Fe(ii)–Fe(iii) formate framework [NH2(CH3)2][FeiiiFeii(HCOO)6]. Recent experiments report a spontaneous electric polarization, and our calculations are in agreement with the reported experimental value. Furthermore, we shed light onto the microscopic mechanism leading to the observed value, as well as on how to possibly enhance the polarization. The interplay between charge ordering, dipolar ordering of DMA+ cations, and the induced structural distortions suggest new interesting directions to explore in these complex multifunctional hybrid perovskites.
