Abstract:<p>Metasurfaces offer complete control of optical wavefront at the subwavelength scale, advancing a new class of artificial planar optics, including lenses, waveplates, and holograms, with unprecedented merits over conventional optical components. In particular, the ultrathin, flat, and compact characteristics of metasurfaces facilitate their integration with semiconductor devices for the development of miniaturized and multifunctional optoelectronic systems. In this work, generation of structured light is implemented at an ultracompact wafer‐level through the monolithic integration of metasurface with standard vertical cavity surface‐emitting lasers (VCSELs). This work opens new perspectives for the design of structured light systems with compactness, lightweight, and scalability. Ultracompact beam structured laser chips with versatile functionalities are experimentally demonstrated, including multichannel beams array generation, on‐chip large‐angle beam steering up to 60°, and wafer‐level holographic beam shaping with a wide field of view (about 124°). The results will promote the development of compact light structuring systems with great potential in 3D imaging, displays, robotic vision, human–computer interaction, and augmented/virtual reality.</p>

Abstract:Metasurfaces, a catalog of optical components, offer numerous novel functions on demand. They have been integrated with vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) in previous studies. However, the performance has been limited by the features of the VCSELs such as low output power and large divergence angle. Although the solution of the module of VCSEL array could solve these issues, the practical application is limited by extra lens and large size. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate reconstruction of a holographic images using a compact integration of a photonic crystal surface-emitting laser and metasurface holograms designed for structured light generation. This research showcases the flexible design capabilities of metasurfaces, high output power (on the order of milliwatts), and the ability to produce well-uniformed images with a wide field of view without the need for a collection lens, making it suitable for 3D imaging and sensing.

Abstract:Structured light projection is a widely adopted approach for depth perception in consumer electronics and other machine vision systems. Diffractive optical element (DOE) is a key component for structured light projection that redistributes a collimated laser beam to a spot array with uniform intensity. Conventional DOEs for laser spot projection are binary-phase gratings, suffering from low efficiency and low uniformity when designed for a large field of view (FOV). Here, by combining vectorial electromagnetic simulation and interior-point method for optimization, we experimentally demonstrate polarization-independent silicon-based metasurfaces that can project a collimated laser beam to a spot array in the far-field with an exceedingly large FOV over 120° × 120°. The metasurface DOE with large FOV may benefit a number of depth perception-related applications such as face-unlock and motion sensing.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities in manipulating light with ultrathin and flat architectures. Although great progress has been made in the metasurface designs and function demonstrations, most metalenses still only work as a substitution of conventional lenses in optical settings,whose integration advantage is rarely manifested. We propose a highly integrated imaging device with silicon metalenses directly mounted on a complementary metal oxide semiconductor image sensor, whose working distance is in hundreds of micrometers. The imaging performances including resolution, signal-to-noise ratio,and field of view（FOV） are investigated. Moreover, we develop a metalens array with polarization-multiplexed dual-phase design for a wide-field microscopic imaging. This approach remarkably expands the FOV without reducing the resolution, which promises a non-limited space-bandwidth product imaging for wide-field microscopy. As a result, we demonstrate a centimeter-scale prototype for microscopic imaging, showing uniqueness of meta-design for compact integration.

Abstract:Structured light characterized by spatially inhomogeneous optical fields found rich applications in optical communication, sensing, microscopy, manipulation, and quantum information. While generation of structured light has been extensively studied in linear optics, the nonlinear optical process, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) materials, is an emerging alternative for generating structured light at shorter wavelengths. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate that radially and azimuthally polarized beams and vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum could be generated at second-harmonic frequencies by using 2D material-based metasurfaces comprising the same transition-metal dichalcogenide meta-atoms. Manipulation of translations and orientations of anisotropically nonlinear meta-atoms exhibiting a threefold rotation-symmetrical crystalline structure induces strong nonlinear spin-orbital coupling, which enables simultaneous control of spatial phase and polarization in second-harmonic generation. The nonlinear transition-metal dichalcogenide metasurface proposed is promising for on-chip integration of nonlinear generation of structured light.

Abstract:Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) have made indispensable contributions to the development of modern optoelectronic technologies. However, arbitrary beam shaping of VCSELs within a compact system still remains inaccessible till now. The emerging ultra-thin flat optical structures, namely metasurfaces, offer a powerful technique to manipulate electromagnetic fields with subwavelength spatial resolution. Here, we show that the monolithic integration of dielectric metasurfaces with VCSELs enables remarkable arbitrary control of the laser beam profiles, including self-collimation, Bessel and Vortex lasers, with high efficiency. Such wafer-level integration of metasurface through VCSELs-compatible technology simplifies the assembling process and preserves the high performance of the VCSELs. We envision that our approach can be implemented in various wide-field applications, such as optical fibre communications, laser printing, smartphones, optical sensing, face recognition, directional displays and ultra-compact light detection and ranging (LiDAR).

Abstract:Structured light projection provides a promising approach to achieving fast and non-contact three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The resolution is a crucial index that represents security and accuracy in applications such as face recognition and robot vision. It depends on the density of dots in the projection. However, further improving the density of dots in the current system must be at the cost of speed or volume. Here, an all-dielectric ultra-thin metasurface is designed and fabricated to project a multi-wavelength dot array. The density of dots is improved because projected dots with different wavelengths fill the gaps with each other. The experimental results demonstrate that the multi-wavelength projection improves the resolution of 3D imaging. Furthermore, the multi-wavelength system is beneficial to measuring a surface with varying colors. The approach has the potential to achieve a new generation of high-resolution systems for tiny fluctuations and colorful 3D imaging in dark environments.

Abstract:Multifunctionality, integration, and miniaturization are the mainstream trends in modern device development. However, optical display and depth perception, essential for innovative applications like intelligent driving and mixed reality, are typically achieved separately in complex and bulky optical systems. Metasurfaces, ultrathin artificial optical surfaces with strong light-matter interaction capabilities at the nanoscale, offer a versatile platform for creating multifunctional, highly integrated, and miniaturized devices by fully exploring spatial multiplexing and utilizing variables like location, polarization, and frequency. In this study, a multifunctional metasurface that integrates meta-holography with Dammann gratings is presented. By engineering the phase profile, the device can display specific holographic images in the Fresnel region while simultaneously producing a high-density spot cloud with over 37 000 spots covering the entire half space. As a proof-of-concept, a projection and reconstruction experiment is performed to elaborate its potential for retrieving three-dimensional (3D) spatial information of real scenarios. The simultaneous generation of display and point cloud holds significant promise for applications in cutting-edge imaging technologies such as intelligent driving and robot vision. A multifunctional metasurface is proposed in this study to simultaneously generate a periodic holographic image array in the image plane, and high-density spot cloud projection of over 37 K spots and nearly 180 degrees field of view in the far field. An experimental demonstration of 3D reconstruction is further conducted to exhibit its potential in display and 3D spatial sensing. image

Abstract:Structured -light (SL) based 3D sensors have been widely used in many fields. Speckle SL is the most widely deployed among all SL sensors due to its light weight, compact size, fast video rate, and low cost. The transmitter (known as the dot projector) consists of a randomly patterned vertical -cavity surface -emitting laser (VCSEL) array multiplicated by a diffractive optical element (DOE) with a fixed repeated pattern. Given that the separation of any two speckles is only one known and fixed number (albeit random), there are no other known scales to calibrate or average. Hence, typical SL sensors require extensive in -factory calibrations, and the depth resolution is limited to 1 mm at similar to 60 cm distance. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we propose a novel dot projector and a new addressable SL (ASL) 3D sensor by using a regularly spaced, individually addressable VCSEL array, multiplicated by a metasurface-DOE (MDOE) into a random pattern of the array. Dynamically turning on or off the VCSELs in the array provides multiple known distances between neighboring speckles, which is used as a " built-in caliper " to achieve higher accuracy of depth. Serving as a precise " vernier caliper, " the addressable VCSEL array enables fine control over speckle positions and high detection precision. We experimentally demonstrated that the proposed method can result in sub -hundred -micron level precision. Abstract:The concept of metamaterials offers a flexible pathway to manipulate the macroscopic behavior of light by delicately designed microscopic subwavelength structures, which has been recently introduced to integrated photonics to create devices with ultra-compact footprint, excellent performance or versatile functionalities. However, the conventional design approach of metamaterials, including two separated steps of subwavelength structure design and the assembly of unit cells, often encounters challenges when facing extreme design targets. In this work, we propose a hierarchical inverse design approach by cascading a conventional unit-cell-based design with a holistic topology optimization. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate ultra-short-range light focusing and mode-size conversion enabled by on-chip meta-lenses. The shortening of tapering region pushes higher numerical aperture of on-chip lenses, leading to the violation of locally periodic approximation used in meta-lens design and thus poor device performance, which fortunately, can be well compensated by the follow-up holistic optimization step. We experimentally realize mode-size squeezing by almost 20 times in a tapering region as short as 8 μm and 5 μm with low insertion loss and broadband performance. The proposed design scheme provides practical guidelines to design metamaterials as flexible on-chip wavefront control and light routing devices for various applications in fiber communication, sensing and optical computing.

Abstract:Traditional optical components and most artificially engineered structures (metamaterials) used for light manipulation are usually designed for narrow bandwidth and limited functionalities. Furthermore, bulkiness and inefficiency limit their application for integrated devices. Metasurfaces, the ultracompact counterpart of bulky metamaterials, exhibit an unprecedented ability to manipulate incident electromagnetic waves at a micron scale. Metasurfaces have emerged as promising candidates for light structuring and its potential applications, ranging from high-capacity data communication to particle manipulation. Despite significant advancement in metasurfaces, realizing high-performance metadevices exhibiting a broadband light manipulation capability is still challenging due to the material's intrinsic nature and lack of a more straightforward design methodology. Here, we demonstrated a broadband single-cell driven all-dielectric metadevice platform to realize high-performance phase modulation for light structuring over the broad visible spectrum 475−650nm. The building block consists of an intelligently optimized nanoantenna made of unique zinc sulfide material that employs the PB phase to realize single-layered broadband metadevices for structured light generation, ensuring a decent average transmission efficiency ηavg=79.9% over the intended band. To prove the concept, we designed numerous metadevices for structured light generation and numerically investigated each under the illumination of selected visible wavelengths. We envisioned that the presented work could accelerate real-life applications such as high-resolution color imaging, optical communication and sensing, quantum information processing, and micromanipulation.

Abstract:Quasi-continuous-phase metasurfaces overcome the side effects imposed by high-order diffraction on imaging and can impart optical parameters such as amplitude, phase, polarization, and frequency to incident light at sub-wavelength scales with high efficiency. Structured-light three-dimensional (3D) imaging is a hot topic in the field of 3D imaging because of its advantages of low computation cost, high imaging accuracy, fast imaging speed, and cost-effectiveness. Structured-light 3D imaging requires uniform diffractive optical elements (DOEs), which could be realized by quasi-continuous-phase metasurfaces. In this paper, we design a quasi-continuous-phase metasurface beam splitter through a vector iterative Fourier transform algorithm and utilize this device to realize structured-light 3D imaging of a target object with subsequent target reconstruction. A structured-light 3D imaging system is then experimentally implemented by combining the fabricated quasi-continuous-phase metasurface illuminated by the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser and a binocular recognition system, which eventually provides a new technological path for the 3D imaging field.

Abstract:We show that a metasurface-coated two-dimensional (2D) slab waveguide enables the generation of arbitrary complex light fields by combining the extreme versatility and freedom on the wavefront control of optical metasurfaces with the compactness of photonic integrated circuits. We demonstrated off-chip 2D focusing and holographic projection with our metasurface-dressed photonic integrated devices. This technology holds the potential for many other optical applications requiring 2D light field manipulation with full on-chip integration, such as solid-state LiDAR and near-eye AR/VR displays.

Abstract:Metasurface polarization optics that consist of two‐dimensional array of birefringent nano‐antennas have proven remarkable capabilities to generate and manipulate vectorial fields with subwavelength resolution and high efficiency. Integrating this new type of metasurface with the standard VCSEL platform enables an ultracompact and powerful solution to control both phase and polarization properties of the laser on a chip, which allows to structure a VCSEL into vector beams with on‐demand wavefronts. Here, we demonstrate this concept by directly generating versatile vector beams from commercially available VCSELs through on‐chip integration of high‐index dielectric metasurfaces. Experimentally, the versatility of our approach for the development of vectorial VCSELs are validated by implementing a variety of functionalities, including directional emission of multibeam with specified polarizations, vectorial holographic display, and vector vortex beams generations. Notably, the proposed vectorial VCSELs integrated with a single layer of beam shaping metasurface bypass the requirements of multiple cascaded optical components, and thus have the potential to promote the advancements of ultracompact, lightweight, and scalable vector beams sources, enriching and expanding the applications of VCSELs in optical communications, laser manipulation and processing, information encryption, and quantum optics. Generating free-space structured light with programmable integrated photonics

Abstract:Structured light is a key component of many modern applications, ranging from superresolution microscopy to imaging, sensing, and quantum information processing. As the utilization of these powerful tools continues to spread, the demand for technologies that enable the spatial manipulation of fundamental properties of light, such as amplitude, phase, and polarization grows further. In this respect, technologies based on liquid-crystal cells, e.g., spatial light modulators, became very popular in the last decade. However, the rapidly advancing field of integrated photonics allows entirely new routes towards beam shaping that not only outperform liquid-crystal devices in terms of speed, but also have substantial potential with respect to robustness and conversion efficiencies. In this study, we demonstrate how a programmable integrated photonic processor can generate and control higher-order free-space structured light beams at the click of a button. Our system offers lossless and reconfigurable control of the spatial distribution of light's amplitude and phase, with switching times in the microsecond domain. The showcased on-chip generation of spatially tailored light enables an even more diverse set of methods, applications, and devices that utilize structured light by providing a pathway towards combining the strengths of programmable integrated photonics and free-space structured light.

Abstract:The emerging applications of silicon photonics in free space, such as LiDARs, free-space optical communications, and quantum photonics, urge versatile emission shaping beyond the capabilities of conventional grating couplers. In these applications, silicon photonic chips deliver free-space emission to detect or manipulate external objects. Light needs to emit from a silicon photonic chip to the free space with specific spatial modes, which produce focusing, collimation, orbital angular momentum, or even holographic projection. A platform that offers versatile shaping of free-space emission, while maintaining the CMOS compatibility and monolithic integration of silicon photonics is in pressing need. Here we demonstrate a platform that integrates metasurfaces monolithically on silicon photonic integrated circuits. The metasurfaces consist of amorphous silicon nanopillars evanescently coupled to silicon waveguides. We demonstrate experimentally diffraction-limited beam focusing with a Strehl ratio of 0.82. The focused spot can be switched between two positions by controlling the excitation direction. We also realize a meta-hologram experimentally that projects an image above the silicon photonic chip. This platform can add a highly versatile interface to the existing silicon photonic ecosystems for precise delivery of free-space emission.
