Abstract:Structured light projection is a widely adopted approach for depth perception in consumer electronics and other machine vision systems. Diffractive optical element (DOE) is a key component for structured light projection that redistributes a collimated laser beam to a spot array with uniform intensity. Conventional DOEs for laser spot projection are binary-phase gratings, suffering from low efficiency and low uniformity when designed for a large field of view (FOV). Here, by combining vectorial electromagnetic simulation and interior-point method for optimization, we experimentally demonstrate polarization-independent silicon-based metasurfaces that can project a collimated laser beam to a spot array in the far-field with an exceedingly large FOV over 120° × 120°. The metasurface DOE with large FOV may benefit a number of depth perception-related applications such as face-unlock and motion sensing.
Off-axis Spectral Confocal Metasurfaces with Linear Dispersion in a Broad Bandwidth

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces offer significant possibilities for miniaturization and expanding the capabilities of conventional optical elements due to their superb wavefront regulation abilities. In this paper, we propose a design approach that precisely controls the chromatic dispersion of anisotropy silicon nanobricks to create off-axis spectral confocal metasurfaces with linear dispersion in short-wave infrared range (1600 nm-2400 nm). Firstly, a single-layer off-axis spectral confocal metasurfaces with an aperture diameter of 60 & mu;m and a fixed x-direction focal length component of 50 & mu;m is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of approach. At the maximum and minimum frequencies, the total focal lengths are 125 & mu;m and 83.33 & mu;m, respectively. Subsequently, we analyze the possible limitations of designing single-layer metasurfaces and overcome them by adopting doublet metasurfaces. An example of double-layer off-axis spectral confocal metasurfaces with a radius of 50 & mu;m and an off-axis distance of 80 & mu;m is showcased to introduce the approach, and the focal lengths range between the maximum and minimum frequencies is 66.67 & mu;m, larger than that of single-layer metasurfaces. The numerical simulation results validate the practicality of our design approach, which can be generalized for other customized functionalities metasurfaces with a broad bandwidth.

Abstract:The proposed scheme is for generation and manipulation structured vector light fields along the propagation direction in terahertz band based on all‐silicon metasurfaces. By introducing the varying phase differences via path accumulation or initial phase, continuous variation and independently designed vector polarization distributions in multiple planes are obtained, for both of the transverse and longitudinal components. The generation and manipulation of vector light fields are of great significance for both fundamental research and industrial applications of polarized optics. In recent years, the spatial domain control of structured vector fields has gradually expanded from two‐ to three‐dimensional, including traditional optics and meta‐optics. Here, a new method to generate and manipulate structured vector light fields along the propagation direction is proposed, and the functionality in terahertz band using all‐silicon metasurfaces is demonstrated. The coherent superposition of orthogonal circularly polarized terahertz waves through long focal depth and multifocal metalens is completed, and varying phase differences between them in the propagation direction via path accumulation or initial phase design are introduced, thereby continuous variation or independently designed vector polarization distributions in multiple planes are obtained. It is worth mentioning that the proposed scheme is not only for the design of transverse electric field components, but also shows a strong ability for manipulation of the longitudinal component. This scheme realizes the polarization distribution designs of three‐dimensional vector fields in three‐dimensional space, and provides a new inspiration for the generation and manipulation of vector beams based on meta‐optics.

Abstract:Quasi-continuous-phase metasurfaces overcome the side effects imposed by high-order diffraction on imaging and can impart optical parameters such as amplitude, phase, polarization, and frequency to incident light at sub-wavelength scales with high efficiency. Structured-light three-dimensional (3D) imaging is a hot topic in the field of 3D imaging because of its advantages of low computation cost, high imaging accuracy, fast imaging speed, and cost-effectiveness. Structured-light 3D imaging requires uniform diffractive optical elements (DOEs), which could be realized by quasi-continuous-phase metasurfaces. In this paper, we design a quasi-continuous-phase metasurface beam splitter through a vector iterative Fourier transform algorithm and utilize this device to realize structured-light 3D imaging of a target object with subsequent target reconstruction. A structured-light 3D imaging system is then experimentally implemented by combining the fabricated quasi-continuous-phase metasurface illuminated by the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser and a binocular recognition system, which eventually provides a new technological path for the 3D imaging field.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. Fluorescence microscopy possesses the advantages of high resolution, high sensitivity, molecular specificity and noninvasiveness, providing an important tool in life science research. The multifocal array and 3D structured light are two kinds of important light fields that are often used in scanning fluorescence microscopy systems and wide-field fluorescence microscopy systems. However, traditional methods for generating multifocal arrays and 3D structured light illumination rely on various bulk optical components, making it challenging to achieve compact optical systems. Besides, generating these two types of illumination typically requires two separate and independent optical systems, hindering the integration of different types of fluorescence microscopy systems. Here, a dielectric metasurface is proposed that can achieve the switching between multifocal arrays and 3D structured light through polarization state modulation, greatly simplifying the illumination optics of fluorescence microscopy systems and facilitating the integration of different types of fluorescence microscopy systems.

Abstract:Structured light projection provides a promising approach to achieving fast and non-contact three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The resolution is a crucial index that represents security and accuracy in applications such as face recognition and robot vision. It depends on the density of dots in the projection. However, further improving the density of dots in the current system must be at the cost of speed or volume. Here, an all-dielectric ultra-thin metasurface is designed and fabricated to project a multi-wavelength dot array. The density of dots is improved because projected dots with different wavelengths fill the gaps with each other. The experimental results demonstrate that the multi-wavelength projection improves the resolution of 3D imaging. Furthermore, the multi-wavelength system is beneficial to measuring a surface with varying colors. The approach has the potential to achieve a new generation of high-resolution systems for tiny fluctuations and colorful 3D imaging in dark environments.

Abstract:Ultra-compact, low-loss, fast, and reconfigurable optical components, enabling manipulation of light by light, could open numerous opportunities for controlling light on the nanoscale. Nanostructured all-dielectric metasurfaces have been shown to enable extensive control of amplitude and phase of light in the linear optical regime. Among other functionalities, they offer unique opportunities for shaping the wave front of light to introduce the orbital angular momentum (OAM) to a beam. Such structured light beams bring a new degree of freedom for applications ranging from spectroscopy and micromanipulation to classical and quantum optical communications. To date, reconfigurability or tuning of the optical properties of all-dielectric metasurfaces have been achieved mechanically, thermally, electrically or optically, using phase-change or nonlinear optical materials. However, a majority of demonstrated tuning approaches are either slow or require high optical powers. Arsenic trisulfide (As$_2$S$_3$) chalcogenide glass offering ultra-fast and large $\chi^{(3)}$ nonlinearity as well as a low two-photon absorption coefficient in the near and mid-wave infrared spectral range, could provide a new platform for the realization of fast and relatively low-intensity reconfigurable metasurfaces. Here, we design and experimentally demonstrate an As$_2$S$_3$ chalcogenide glass based metasurface that enables reshaping of a conventional Hermite-Gaussian beam with no OAM into an OAM beam at low-intensity levels, while preserves the original beam's amplitude and phase characteristics at high-intensity levels. The proposed metasurface could find applications for a new generation of optical communication systems and optical signal processing.

Compact meta-optics infrared camera based on a polarization-insensitive metalens with a large field of view

Abstract:Metasurfaces have recently emerged as a crucial tool because they achieve spherical-aberration-free focusing when exposed to normal incident light. Nevertheless, these metasurfaces often exhibit considerable coma when sub-jected to oblique incident light, thereby limiting their imaging field of view. In light of this, our study presents the design and an experimental demonstration of a polarization -insensitive, large-field-of-view metalens that uses a silicon metasurface. The metalens is specifically tailored to the long-wavelength infrared region and possesses a numerical aperture of 0.81, which is capable of focusing light at incident angles up to +/- 80 degrees. Moreover, we successfully build a meta -optics camera by integrating the large field-of-view metalens on top of an image sensor, thus enabling wide-angle thermal imaging of practical scenes. This research provides new, to the best of our knowledge, insights for designing and realiz-ing large-field-of-view optical systems and holds promise for applications in night vision imaging and security monitor-ing. Abstract:<p>Metasurfaces offer complete control of optical wavefront at the subwavelength scale, advancing a new class of artificial planar optics, including lenses, waveplates, and holograms, with unprecedented merits over conventional optical components. In particular, the ultrathin, flat, and compact characteristics of metasurfaces facilitate their integration with semiconductor devices for the development of miniaturized and multifunctional optoelectronic systems. In this work, generation of structured light is implemented at an ultracompact wafer‐level through the monolithic integration of metasurface with standard vertical cavity surface‐emitting lasers (VCSELs). This work opens new perspectives for the design of structured light systems with compactness, lightweight, and scalability. Ultracompact beam structured laser chips with versatile functionalities are experimentally demonstrated, including multichannel beams array generation, on‐chip large‐angle beam steering up to 60°, and wafer‐level holographic beam shaping with a wide field of view (about 124°). The results will promote the development of compact light structuring systems with great potential in 3D imaging, displays, robotic vision, human–computer interaction, and augmented/virtual reality.</p>

Abstract:Structured light has proven useful for numerous photonic applications. However, the current use of structured light in optical fiber science and technology is severely limited by mode mixing or by the lack of optical elements that can be integrated onto fiber end-faces for complex wavefront control, and hence generation of structured light is still handled outside the fiber via bulky optics in free space. We report a metafiber platform capable of creating arbitrarily structured light on the hybrid-order Poincaré sphere. Polymeric metasurfaces, with unleashed height degree of freedom and a greatly expanded 3D meta-atom library, were laser nanoprinted and interfaced with polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers. Multiple metasurfaces were interfaced on the fiber end-faces, transforming the fiber output into different structured-light fields, including cylindrical vector beams, circularly polarized vortex beams, and an arbitrary vector field. Our work provides a new paradigm for advancing optical fiber science and technology towards fiber-integrated light shaping, which may find important applications in fiber communications, fiber lasers and sensors, endoscopic imaging, fiber lithography, and lab-on-fiber technology.

Abstract:The metasurface is a platform with a small footprint and abundant functionalities. With propagation phase and geometric phase, polarization multiplexing is possible. However, different response behaviors of propagation phase and geometric phase to wavelength have not been fully employed to widen the capabilities of metasurfaces. Here, we theoretically dem-onstrate that metasurfaces can achieve near-field and far-field decoupling with the same polarization at two wavelengths. First, we found a set of pillars whose propagation phase difference between two wavelengths covers the full range of 2 pi. Then, by rotating pillars to control the geometric phase, the phase at both wavelengths can cover the full range of 2 pi. Finally, by means of interference principle, arbitrary independent coding for the near field and far field of dual wavelengths is realized. In addition, when the far-field function is focusing, the focused spot is close to the diffraction limit, and, when the NA of the lens is very small, the final output focal length is four times of initial input focal length. This work circumvents the strong wavelength-dependent limitation of planar devices and paves the way toward designing multi-wavelength and multi-functional metadevices for scenarios such as AR applications, fluorescence microscopy, and stimulated emission depletion microscopy.

Abstract:Metasurface is a class of two-dimensional microstructure functional materials, which has an ability of modulating light in subwavelength region and becomes a hot topic during the last decade. An advantage of metasurfaces is their versatility by invoking the degrees of freedom of light field to achieve various functionalities. In this paper, we report methods of using the polarization and dispersion of light to achieve multifunctional metasurface devices, allowing the different degrees of freedom of light to carry independent phase profiles to achieve the polarization-dependent conversion of Bessel beams with different orders and numerical apertures as well as integrated optical tweezers-optical spanner metasurface. Also, the wavelength-controlled multifunctional metalens by introducing an improved genetic algorithm has been implemented. We envision our research are expected to be the potential candidates in multifunctional integrated optical devices.

Abstract:All‐dielectric metasurfaces with low‐loss planar photonic subwavelength elements can be freely designed to realize high‐efficiency light wave manipulation. It is highly desirable to achieve multifunctionalities with a single metasurface to further enrich the manipulation of light with metasurfaces for diverse applications. This article demonstrates multifunctional silicon‐based metasurfaces capable of generating versatile wavefronts under different polarization light incidence at visible wavelengths. The polarization‐multiplexed metasurfaces are implemented with rationally arranged anisotropic silicon nanobricks to achieve independent control of orthogonal linearly polarized light waves for multi‐channel functionalities, including polarized beam splitting, opposite charged and different ordered optical vortexes. The polarization‐multiplexed high‐quality silicon metasurfaces have great potential for applications in multi‐channel optical devices with integrated functionality. Multi‐functional silicon metasurfaces are demonstrated for realizing multi‐channel visible light devices by independently controlling the propagation of orthogonal linearly polarized wave. High‐index silicon structures are employed for controllable interfacial phase discontinuity and thus high‐efficiency polarization‐multiplexed all‐dielectric metadevices including multiplexed beam deflectors and multi‐ordered vortex generators.

Abstract:Abstract Rigorously designed sub-micrometer structure arrays are widely used in metasurfaces for light modulation. One of the glaring restrictions is the unavailability of easily accessible fabrication methods to efficiently produce large-area and freely designed structure arrays with nanoscale resolution. We develop a patterned pulse laser lithography (PPLL) approach to create structure arrays with sub-wavelength feature resolution and periods from less than 1 μm to over 15 μm on large-area thin films with substrates under ambient conditions. Separated ultrafast laser pulses with patterned wavefront by quasi-binary phase masks rapidly create periodic ablated/modified structures by high-speed scanning. The gradient intensity boundary and circular polarization of the wavefront weaken diffraction and polarization-dependent asymmetricity effects during light propagation for high uniformity. Structural units of metasurfaces are obtained on metal and inorganic photoresist films, such as antennas, catenaries, and nanogratings. We demonstrate a large-area metasurface (10 × 10 mm 2 ) revealing excellent infrared absorption (3–7 μm), which comprises 250,000 concentric rings and takes only 5 minutes to produce.

Abstract:Abstract Monochromatic light can be characterized by its three fundamental properties: amplitude, phase, and polarization. In this work, we propose a versatile, transmission-mode all-dielectric metasurface platform that can independently manipulate the phase and amplitude for two orthogonal states of polarization in the visible frequency range. For proof-of-concept experimental demonstration, various single-layer metasurfaces composed of subwavelength-spaced titanium-dioxide nanopillars are designed, fabricated, and characterized to exhibit the ability of polarization-switchable multidimensional light-field manipulation, including polarization-switchable grayscale nanoprinting, nonuniform cylindrical lensing, and complex-amplitude holography. We envision the metasurface platform demonstrated here to open new possibilities toward creating compact multifunctional optical devices for applications in polarization optics, information encoding, optical data storage, and security.

Abstract:Herein, a lucid meta-holographic approach leveraging geometric phase metasurfaces and photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers is presented. Such a straightforward technique inherently enables polarized structured light projection with opposite circular polarization states, effectively doubling the field of view for depth sensing applications. Furthermore, the innate polarization state of projected light provides enhanced resistance to environmental interference. To demonstrate the practical utility of this method, an integrated depth sensing system based on the geometric phase meta-hologram has been developed and successfully detects targets at an operating distance of 75 cm, paving the way for advanced 3D sensing applications in various fields.

Abstract:Polarimetry, refers to the measurement of polarization states, has triggered vital applications in polarization imaging, biological sensing, and quantum optics. Traditional polarimetry has been well established to characterize polarization states but with bulk optical elements. With the development of micro- and nano-optics, a polarimetry device with ultracompact architecture is highly on-demand. Herein, a silicon metasurface-based full-Stokes polarimetry device for long-wavelength infrared light is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The metasurface is composed of silicon micropillar array, each of which can be regarded as a micro-scale birefringent wave-plate. Through a polarization-dependent phase profile design, the metasurface has the ability to split and focus different polarization states and, thus, is capable of achieving full-Stokes polarimetry. The demonstrated strategy holds the potential applications for infrared polarization detection and imaging in compact systems.
360° structured light with learned metasurfaces

Abstract:Structured light has proven instrumental in three-dimensional imaging, LiDAR and holographic light projection. Metasurfaces, comprising subwavelength-sized nanostructures, facilitate 180°-field-of-view structured light, circumventing the restricted field of view inherent in traditional optics like diffractive optical elements. However, extant-metasurface-facilitated structured light exhibits sub-optimal performance in downstream tasks, due to heuristic design patterns such as periodic dots that do not consider the objectives of the end application. Here we present 360° structured light, driven by learned metasurfaces. We propose a differentiable framework that encompasses a computationally efficient 180° wave propagation model and a task-specific reconstructor, and exploits both transmission and reflection channels of the metasurface. Leveraging a first-order optimizer within our differentiable framework, we optimize the metasurface design, thereby realizing 360° structured light. We have utilized 360° structured light for holographic light projection and three-dimensional imaging. Specifically, we demonstrate the first 360° light projection of complex patterns, enabled by our propagation model that can be computationally evaluated 50,000× faster than the Rayleigh–Sommerfeld propagation. For three-dimensional imaging, we improve the depth-estimation accuracy by 5.09× in root-mean-square error compared with heuristically designed structured light. Such 360° structured light promises robust 360° imaging and display for robotics, extended-reality systems and human–computer interactions.
