Abstract:Petroleum-derived polyimides (PIs) are indispensable in microelectronics. However, these polymers face significant challenges including limited chemical modifiability, sustainability concerns, and the potential carcinogenicity of aromatic diamines. Daidzein-based monomers emerge as a promising alternative, offering comparable rigidity and multi-functionality. Here, aromatic rings and alpha, beta-unsaturated ketone structures from daidzein are integrated into the PIs main chain for direct sensing programming. The abundance of aromatic rings in the backbone structure confers mechanical properties and solvent resistance similar to conventional PIs, and the alpha, beta-unsaturated ketone structure further enhances flexibility and sensing capability. In particular, the selective reduction of the unsaturated ketones in the main chain modulates the ability of the material to absorb and diffuse water vapor molecules, thus facilitating a direct response to humidity. The constructed sensor achieves ultrafast response/recovery times (15 ms/95 ms), exceeding conventional designs by 10 to 2000 times. This work illustrates the sustainable design of bio-based PIs and inspires the potential for programming the production of flexible sensors with targeted applications.
