Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel dynamic Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) by utilizing frequency-agility double-sideband digital optical frequency comb (DOFC) probes. For the first time, simultaneous interrogation of the complex Brillouin gain, loss and corresponding phase spectra is realized without frequency sweeping process. An acoustic-optical modulator is employed to aid in the simultaneous acquisition of full-field Brillouin spectra without sideband selective optical filters, yielding a fixed frequency offset over the spectral range via direct detection. Through the joint analysis of additional spectra, the measurement accuracy can be significantly improved compared to the traditional single-sideband-based schemes. In addition, frequency-agility DOFC probes are used to improve the spatial resolution while maintaining an acceptable frequency resolution. Eventually, the proposed BOTDA achieves a 4-m spatial resolution and less than 1.53-MHz frequency uncertainty over 10-km fiber with 400-MHz dynamic measurement range for the full-field Brillouin spectra. For proof of concept, dynamic vibration measurement is demonstrated with 40 Hz sampling rate. The proposed scheme with full-field Brillouin spectra measurement provides high accuracy enhancement, showcasing a promising application for distributed dynamic sensing.

Abstract:A significant spatial resolution enhancement scheme for digital optical frequency comb (DOFC)-based fast Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using frequency-agility probes, without sacrificing the frequency resolution. The proposed system ensures high spatial resolution by using short frame duration, meanwhile enabling high frequency resolution retrieval of the Brillouin gain spectrum using frequency interleaving of multiple frequency-agility DOFC probes. Additionally, quadratic phase coding is introduced to release the influence of the high peak to average power ratio of the probes. Eventually, the proposed BOTDA sensor achieves a record 5-m spatial resolution over 10-km fiber with less than 2-MHz frequency uncertainty, and a 1-GHz dynamic measurement range. For proof of concept, 10-Hz vibration sensing is also successfully demonstrated at a 40-Hz sampling rate, showing great potential for fast measurement. It is worth mentioning that a higher spatial resolution can be achieved by using more frequency-agility DOFC probes, albeit at the expense of increasing the measurement time.

Abstract:An ultra-fast sweep-free distributed BOTDA sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated employing coherent de-modulation of digital optical frequency comb (DOFC) probe signal. The phase shift of each frequency tone induced during the Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS), corresponding to the Brillouin Phase Spectrum (BPS), is simultaneously measured in a single shot without frequency sweeping and averaging. We demonstrate an ultra-fast BOTDA sensor in 10km long fiber with the measurement time of 10 ps, which is depending on the time-of-flight of the fiber. The minimum detectable fiber length is 51.2m with a 1.95 MHz frequency resolution among 1 GHz sensing coverage. The BFS uncertainty of our ultra-fast BOTDA using BPS is calculated to be~1.5 MHz near the end of fiber under test (FUT), which is significantly improved by ~50% compared with that using BGS.

Abstract:In this letter, a resolution enhancement and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement scheme for digital optical frequency comb (DOFC)-based Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) ultrafast distributed sensing employing a pump pulse array is proposed. Based on the properties of the time-invariant linear system and the cyclic revolution theorem, experimental results indicate that its spatial resolution reaches 10.24 m while the frequency uncertainty is below 2 MHz over a 9.5 km fiber. Moreover, the response time is only 209.6 μs and the temperature measurement error is less than 0.52 °C.

Abstract:A spatial resolution improvement scheme for the digital optical frequency comb (DOFC)-based single-shot Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) by utilizing multiple pump pulses is demonstrated. Assisted by four pump pulses, the spatial resolution can be improved by four times without decreasing the detection resolution. The response time, and the spatial resolution of our scheme over 10 km fiber, are 0.1 ms and 12.5 m. Distributed temperature and strain measurements are carried out with detection resolutions of 1.6 degrees C and 44 mu epsilon, respectively, and the capability of dynamic measurement of this proposed BOTDA is also demonstrated by probing a vibration with frequency up to 1.2 kHz. Abstract:We have proposed and demonstrated an enhanced Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensing system with fast measurement speed based on the Brillouin phase recovery using Kramers-Kronig (KK) relation. The non-Lorentz Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) and Brillouin phase spectrum (BPS) measured by BOTDA are theoretically validated to satisfy KK relation and hence the BPS is digitally recovered by performing Hilbert Transform (HT) to the measured BGS. The recovery of the whole BPS along the 45km fiber only consumes 0.3s. Both simulation and experiment have been carried out to analyze the quality of the recovered BPS under various conditions. By making use of the excellent linearity of the recovered BPS, we accelerate the data processing speed by three times through Linear Fitting (LF) of BPS, without compromise of the sensing accuracy. With implementation of simple HT and LF, this scheme does not need modification of the BOTDA setup and complicated data processing algorithm, which would be a practical way for applications where fast measurement speed is needed, especially in long-distance and high-spatial resolution sensing.

Abstract:A single-measurement sweep-free distributed Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) sensor based on phase detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated employing digital optical frequency comb (DOFC) probe signal. Brillouin Phase Spectrum (BPS) of DOFC probe induced by Brillouin interaction is measured using coherent detection in a single acquisition, without any frequency scanning and data averaging. Single-measurement BOTDA sensor based on BPS in 10km long fiber is demonstrated with a response time of 100 μs, which is limited only by the fiber length. The spatial resolution is 51.2m, determined by the duration of DOFC. And the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) uncertainty is estimated to be~1.5 MHz at the end of fiber under test (FUT). Benefiting from the fast response time, dynamic measurement up to 1 kHz vibration frequency has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) using distributed Brillouin amplification (DBA) only requires a milliwatt-level pump to achieve a sensing range beyond 100 km, which provides a powerful tool for temperature/strain sensing. However, similar to the majority of other long-range BOTDAs, the state-of-the-art reports require > 1000 times average, severely restricting the sensing speed. The blind area over tens of kilometers caused by the nonuniform Brillouin response and parasitic amplitude modulation (AM) are crucial factors affecting the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here, a comprehensive performance optimization and substantial enhancement for BOTDA sensors was presented by the direct demodulation of an injection-locked dual-bandwidth probe wave. Injection locking (IL) can completely eliminate the impact of AM noise; dual-bandwidth probe enables self-adaptive pulse loss compensation, thereby intensifying the SNR flatness along the ultralong fiber, and direct probe demodulation can overcome nonlocal effects and allows ∼19.7 dB enhancement of probe input power. Therefore, using only 100 times average, ∼148.3 km sensing, and ∼5 m spatial resolution were achieved with < ∼0.8 MHz standard deviation of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) over a broad range (∼131.7 km). The reduction in averages was more than 10 times that of the reported majority of long-range BOTDAs. Such performances were achieved without using time-consuming or post-processing techniques, such as optical pulse coding and image denoising. Because this approach is compatible with optical chirp chain technique without frequency sweeping, fast acquisition (0.3 s) was also realized, which has the potential for fast sensing at 3.3 Hz along a ∼150 km fiber.

Abstract:Brillouin-based optical fiber sensing has been regarded as a good distributed measurement tool for the modern large geometrical structure and the industrial facilities because it can demodulate the distributed environment information (e.g., temperature and strain) along the sensing fiber. Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA), which is an excellent and attractive scheme, has been widely developed thanks to its high performance in a signal-to-noise ratio, a spatial resolution, and sensing distance. However, the sampling rate of the classical BOTDA is severely limited by several factors (especially the serially frequency-sweeping process) so that it cannot be suitable for the quickly distributed measurement. In this work, we summarize some promising breakthroughs about the fast BOTDA, which can be named as an optical frequency comb technique, an optical frequency-agile technique, a slope-assisted technique, and an optical chirp chain technique.

Abstract:A Brillouin phase spectra (BPS) demodulation approach in Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) based on phase to intensity conversion is proposed and demonstrated. By utilizing the cascaded modulation of the probe light and coherent detection in a symmetric double-sidebands BOTDA, the Brillouin phase shift is transferred into the signal intensity so that it can be recovered with a simple envelope detection. Moreover, the measurement accuracy is significantly improved by the reduction of phase noise caused by the fiber transmission. A 2-m spatial resolution over 39.1-km fiber and 0.7 degrees C temperature accuracy at the end of the fiber are achieved using the BPS measurement. Compared with the conventional IQ demodulation without phase noise elimination, the precision is improved similar to 6.3 dB and the maximum variation of the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) is reduced from 13 MHz down to 2 MHz. Meanwhile, the comparison experiment with the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) detection is also implemented. The proposed method achieves smaller BFS uncertainty in comparison with the conventional BGS detection. At the end of the fiber, uncertainty is reduced from 1 MHz down to 0.7 MHz.

Abstract:Distributed long-range Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) is an extremely time-consuming sensing scheme, which requires frequency mapping of the Brillouin spectrum and a large number of average times. Here, we propose a fast long-range BOTDA based on the optical chirp chain (OCC) probe wave and Brillouin loss scheme. The OCC-modulated probe wave is enabled by cascading fast-frequency-changing microwave chirp segments head-to-tail, which covers a large frequency range around the anti-Stokes frequency relative to the pump wave. The combination of the OCC technique and Brillouin loss scheme provides several advantages, i.e., fast measurement, a high Brillouin threshold, no additional amplification scheme, and freedom from the nonlocal effect. In the experiment, 6 m spatial resolution, 3.2 s measurement time, and 3 MHz measurement precision were achieved over a 150 km single- mode fiber. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We experimentally study a dual-sideband Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) with balanced detection. The amplification regime is simple (only bi-directional first-order Raman amplification); however, taking advantage of the balanced detection, 200km fiber-loop sensing system is achieved (half of the whole length is used for sensing). Before the balanced detector, a FBG is used to separate the anti-Stokes and the Stokes components of the probe light, and the optical source׳s wavelength with regard to the given FBG׳s Bragg wavelength is shown to be highly relevant to the system׳s performance.
