Abstract:We identify spectral similarities between asteroids and meteorites. We identify spectral matches between 500 asteroid spectra and over 1,000 samples of RELAB meteorite spectra over 0.45-2.5 microns. We reproduce many major and previously known meteorite-asteroid connections and find possible new, more rare or less-established connections. Well-established connections include: ordinary chondrites (OC) with S-complex asteroids; pristine CM carbonaceous chondrites with Ch-type asteroids and heated CMs with C-type asteroids; HED meteorites with V-types; enstatite chondrites with Xc-type asteroids; CV meteorites with K-type asteroids; Brachinites, Pallasites and R chondrites with olivine-dominated A-type asteroids. We find a trend from Q, Sq, S, Sr to Sv correlates with LL to H, with Q-types matching predominately to L and LL ordinary chondrites, and Sr and Sv matching predominantly with L and H ordinary chondrites. Ordinary chondrite samples that match to the X-complex, all measurements of slabs and many labeled as dark or black (shocked) OCs. We find carbonaceous chondrite samples having spectral slopes large enough to match D-type asteroid spectra. In many cases the asteroid type to meteorite type links are not unique. While there are well established matches between an asteroid class and meteorite class, there are less common but still spectrally compatible matches between many asteroid types and meteorite types. This result emphasizes the diversity of asteroid and meteorite compositions and highlights the degeneracy of classification by spectral features alone. Recent and upcoming spacecraft missions will shed light on the compositions of many of the asteroid classes, particularly those without diagnostic features, (C-, B-, X-, and D-types), with measurements of Ceres, Ryugu, Bennu, Psyche, and C-, P-, and D-types as part of the Lucy mission.

Abstract:The main asteroid belt lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, but the region is not uniformly filled with asteroids. There are gaps, known as the Kirkwood gaps, in the asteroid distribution in distinct locations that are associated with orbital resonances with the giant planets; asteroids placed in these locations follow chaotic orbits and escape from the asteroid belt. Here we show that the observed distribution of main belt asteroids does not fill uniformly even those regions that are dynamically stable over the age of the solar system. We find a pattern of excess depletion of asteroids, particularly just outward of the Kirkwood Gaps associated with the 5:2, the 7:3, and the 2:1 jovian resonances. These features are not accounted for by planetary perturbations in the current structure of the solar system, but are consistent with dynamical ejection of asteroids by the sweeping of gravitational resonances during the migration of Jupiter and Saturn ~4 gigayears ago.

Abstract:CASTAway is a mission concept to explore our Solar System’s main asteroid belt. Asteroids and comets provide a window into the formation and evolution of our Solar System and the composition of these objects can be inferred from space-based remote sensing using spectroscopic techniques. Variations in composition across the asteroid populations provide a tracer for the dynamical evolution of the Solar System. The mission combines a long-range (point source) telescopic survey of over 10,000 objects, targeted close encounters with 10–20 asteroids and serendipitous searches to constrain the distribution of smaller (e.g. 10 m) size objects into a single concept. With a carefully targeted trajectory that loops through the asteroid belt, CASTAway would provide a comprehensive survey of the main belt at multiple scales. The scientific payload comprises a 50 cm diameter telescope that includes an integrated low-resolution (R = 30–100) spectrometer and visible context imager, a thermal (e.g. 6–16 µm) imager for use during the flybys, and modified star tracker cameras to detect small (∼10 m) asteroids. The CASTAway spacecraft and payload have high levels of technology readiness and are designed to fit within the programmatic and cost caps for a European Space Agency medium class mission, while delivering a significant increase in knowledge of our Solar System.

Abstract:Asteroids are remnants of the material from which the Solar System formed. Fragments of asteroids, in the form of meteorites, include samples of the first solid matter to form in our Solar System 4.5 mia years ago. Spectroscopic studies of asteroids show that they, like the meteorites, range from very primitive objects to highly evolved small Earth-like planets that differentiated into core mantle and crust. The asteroid belt displays systematic variations in abundance of asteroid types from the more evolved types in the inner belt to the more primitive objects in the outer reaches of the belt thus bridging the gap between the inner evolved apart of the Solar System and the outer primitive part of the Solar System. High-speed collisions between asteroids are gradually resulting in their break-up. The size distribution of kilometer-sized asteroids implies that the presently un-detected population of sub-kilometer asteroids far outnumber the known larger objects. Sub-kilometer asteroids are expected to provide unique insight into the evolution of the asteroid belt and to the meteorite-asteroid connection. We propose a space mission to detect and characterize sub-kilometer asteroids between Jupiter and Venus. The mission is named Bering after the famous navigator and explorer Vitus Bering. A key feature of the mission is an advanced payload package, providing full on board autonomy of both object detection and tracking, which is required in order to study fast moving objects in deep space. The autonomy has the added advantage of reducing the cost of running the mission to a minimum, thus enabling science to focus on the main objectives.

Abstract:There are at least three compelling reasons for the human race to initiate a major programme to explore and better understand the 'minor planets' of the Solar System: (1) Enhancing scientific knowledge; (2) Mitigating the impact hazard; and (3) Utilizing extraterrestrial resources. Strong synergies exist between all three. Moreover, all these activities would benefit from greater international cooperation in space exploration by the World's space agencies, and the recognition that asteroids are important targets for human and robotic exploration.

Abstract:Carbonaceous asteroids, such as (101955) Bennu, preserve material from the early Solar System, including volatile compounds and organic molecules. We report spacecraft imaging and spectral data collected during and after retrieval of a sample from Bennu's surface. The sampling event mobilized rocks and dust into a debris plume, excavating a 9-meter-long elliptical crater. This exposed material is darker, spectrally redder, and more abundant in fine particulates than the original surface. The bulk density of the displaced subsurface material was 500 to 700 kilograms per cubic meter, which is about half that of the whole asteroid. Particulates that landed on instrument optics spectrally resemble aqueously altered carbonaceous meteorites. The spacecraft stored 250 ± 101 grams of material, which will be delivered to Earth in 2023.

Abstract:Abstract The following discussion is divided into seven major sections. The first section outlines the scientific background and justification for asteroid studies in the context of understanding the formation and early evolution of the solar system. The second section briefly reviews the nature and distribution of the asteroid population. The third section discusses several major unresolved issues in asteroid and meteorite science which can potentially be addressed by asteroid remote sensing investigations. The fourth section outlines the nature and definition of the asteroid taxonomic classes. The fifth section summarizes the existing asteroidal spectral (and other remote sensing) data sets which are used to determine compositions and the techniques employed in the interpretation of such data. The sixth section explores the compositional meaning and diversity of these taxonomic classes and suggests meteoritic analogues for the taxonomic types. The seventh section describes the conclusions—or preliminary results—of several recent asteroid investigations which have focused on particular unsolved issues of the asteroid‐meteorite relationship and of the early solar system properties. The final section discusses the overall conclusions and future directions.

Abstract:On September 24, 2023, NASA's OSIRIS‐REx mission dropped a capsule to Earth containing ~120 g of pristine carbonaceous regolith from Bennu. We describe the delivery and initial allocation of this asteroid sample and introduce its bulk physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties from early analyses. The regolith is very dark overall, with higher‐reflectance inclusions and particles interspersed. Particle sizes range from submicron dust to a stone ~3.5 cm long. Millimeter‐scale and larger stones typically have hummocky or angular morphologies. Some stones appear mottled by brighter material that occurs as veins and crusts. Hummocky stones have the lowest densities and mottled stones have the highest. Remote sensing of Bennu's surface detected hydrated phyllosilicates, magnetite, organic compounds, carbonates, and scarce anhydrous silicates, all of which the sample confirms. We also find sulfides, presolar grains, and, less expectedly, Mg,Na‐rich phosphates, as well as other trace phases. The sample's composition and mineralogy indicate substantial aqueous alteration and resemble those of Ryugu and the most chemically primitive, low‐petrologic‐type carbonaceous chondrites. Nevertheless, we find distinct hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen isotopic compositions, and some of the material we analyzed is enriched in fluid‐mobile elements. Our findings underscore the value of sample return—especially for low‐density material that may not readily survive atmospheric entry—and lay the groundwork for more comprehensive analyses.

Abstract:The Trojan asteroids provide a unique perspective on the history of Solar System. As a large population of small bodies, they record important gravitational interactions and dynamical evolution of the Solar System. In the past decade, significant advances have been made in understanding physical properties, and there has been a revolution in thinking about the origin of Trojans. The ice and organics generally presumed to be a significant part of Trojan compositions have yet to be detected directly, though low density of the binary system Patroclus (and possibly low density of the binary/moonlet system Hektor) is consistent with an interior ice component. By contrast, fine-grained silicates that appear to be similar to cometary silicates in composition have been detected, and a color bimodality may indicate distinct compositional groups among the Trojans. Whereas Trojans had traditionally been thought to have formed near 5 AU, a new paradigm has developed in which the Trojans formed in the proto-Kuiper Belt, and they were scattered inward and captured in the Trojan swarms as a result of resonant interactions of the giant planets. Whereas the orbital and population distributions of current Trojans are consistent with this origin scenario, there are significant differences between current physical properties of Trojans and those of Kuiper Belt objects. These differences may be indicative of surface modification due to the inward migration of objects that became the Trojans, but understanding of appropriate modification mechanisms is poor and would benefit from additional laboratory studies. Many open questions remain, and the future promises significant strides in our understanding of Trojans. The time is ripe for a spacecraft mission to the Trojans, to turn these objects into geologic worlds that can be studied in detail to unravel their complex history.

Abstract:A near-Earth object (NEO) is any small Solar system body whose orbit brings it to proximity with Earth. Currently, more than 20000 NEOs are detected, most of which have diameters less than 1 km. The study of NEOs is significant to understand the solar system. NEOs formed in the very early stage of solar system according to isotope dating, and remain most original material in proto-planetary disk. Thus, the study of NEOs can reveal the components of early solar system. Besides, NEOs are also important to explain the formation of Earth-Moon systems in giant impact hypothesis, i.e., a mar-size asteroid hit Earth 4.5 billion years ago and the fragments around Earth formed Moon via gravitational accretion. Furthermore, survey of NEOs is also important for human beings, because of the potentially hazardous objects (PHOs), which lead to the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction event, as well as the Tunguska event. Fortunately, we have lots of NEO survey programs, e.g., Catalina Sky Survey, Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking, Pan-STARRS, Zwicky Transient Facility in ground, and Near-Earth Object WISE in space with near infrared telescope, etc. These projects provide a nearly completed catalog for NEOs with diameter >1 km. We can determine the orbits of these NEOs via the astrometric time series data. However, lots of smaller NEOs with diameter <140 m are still missing, due to the detection limits of faint objects using current survey telescopes. These missing small NEOs can also lead to local destruction on Earth, e.g., the Chelyabinsk meteorite in 2013. More survey programs with larger telescopes, e.g., LSST, will be helpful to generate a more completed catalog of small NEOs and to recognize more small PHOs. After knowing the threat of PHOs, human beings need defense plans to avoid the impact or minimize the influence on human being. Although a big asteroid impact event would occur in a very low possibility, we need to take precaution. However, we do not have any feasible and effective plan to avoid the asteroid impact currently. Either nuclear explosive plan or drag the asteroid away using spacecraft engines can hardly work, Because of the huge mass (>millions tons) of the asteroid. Besides, the big fragments of the asteroid after explosion may lead to more impacts on Earth and make conditions worse. Better forethought plans need experts in astronomy, geology, life science, climatology etc., to discuss together. The NEOs may be harmful if it impacts Earth. However, the resources on asteroid, e.g., water, metal can be utilized by human beings. Utilizing the resources in space is the only way to break through the limits of Earth's resources, and extend the footprint of human being further in space. Currently, some companies are set up and aim to mine on asteroids, e.g., the Planetary Resources Company and the Deep Space Industries. Chinese people also set up a company named Origin Space to study the plan in this field. Although, there is a long way to go, including lots of crucial techniques need to be studied, the success of development of the resources on asteroid would bring our technique and civilization in a new era.

Abstract:The Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor mission is a NASA observatory designed to discover and characterize near-Earth asteroids and comets. The mission's primary objective is to find the majority of objects large enough to cause severe regional impact damage ($>$140 m in effective spherical diameter) within its five-year baseline survey. Operating at the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrange point, the mission will survey to within 45 degrees of the Sun in an effort to find the objects in the most Earth-like orbits. The survey cadence is optimized to provide observational arcs long enough to reliably distinguish near-Earth objects from more distant small bodies that cannot pose an impact hazard. Over the course of its survey, NEO Surveyor will discover $\sim$200,000 - 300,000 new NEOs down to sizes as small as $\sim$10 m and thousands of comets, significantly improving our understanding of the probability of an Earth impact over the next century.
