Abstract:Asteroids are frequently colliding with small projectiles. Although each individual small collision is not very important, their cumulative effect can substantially change topography and also the overall shape of an asteroid. We run simulations of random collisions onto a single target asteroid represented by triaxial ellipsoid. We investigated asteroids of several hundred meters to about 18 km in diameter for which we assumed all material excavated by the collision to escape the asteroid. The cumulative effect of these collisions is an increasing elongation of the asteroid figure. However, the estimated timescale of this process is much longer than the collisional lifetime of asteroids. Therefore, we conclude that small collisions are probably not responsible for the overall shape of small asteroids.

Abstract:We present a series of numerical simulations using a shock physics smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code, investigating energetic impacts on small celestial bodies characterised by diverse internal structures, ranging from weak and homogeneous compositions to rubble-pile structures with varying boulder volume packing. Our findings reveal that the internal structure of these rubble-pile bodies significantly influences the impact outcomes. Specifically, we observe that the same impact energy can either catastrophically disrupt a target with a low boulder packing (<30 vol%), or result in the ejection of only a small fraction of material from a target with the same mass but high boulder packing (>40 vol%). This finding highlights the pivotal role played by the rubble-pile structure, effectively acting as a bulk shear strength, which governs the size and behaviour of the resulting impact. Consequently, understanding and characterising the internal structure of asteroids will be of paramount importance for any future efforts to deflect or disrupt an asteroid on a collision course with Earth.

Abstract:Analytical approximations are commonly employed in the initial trajectory design phase of a mission to rapidly explore a broad design space. In the context of an asteroid deflection mission, accurately predicting deflection is crucial to determining the spacecraft's trajectory that will produce the desired outcome. However, the dynamics involved are intricate, and simplistic models may not fully capture the system's complexity. This study assesses the precision and limitations of analytical models in predicting deflection, comparing them to more accurate numerical simulations. The findings reveal that encounters with perturbing bodies, even at significant distances (a dozen times the radii of the sphere of influence of the perturbing planet), can markedly disturb the deflected asteroid's trajectory, resulting in notable disparities between analytical and numerical predictions. The underlying reasons for this phenomenon are explained, and provisional general guidelines are provided to assist mission analysts in addressing such occurrences. By comprehending the impact of shallow encounters on deflection, this study equips designers with the knowledge to make informed decisions throughout the trajectory planning process, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of asteroid deflection missions.

Abstract:Abstract A small near-Earth asteroid, discovered by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) on September 17, 2020, turned out to be a part of the Centaur upper stage of the Surveyor 2 spacecraft launched by NASA on September 20, 1966 and subsequently crashed. This object had moved in a heliocentric orbit until it was under the influence of Earth’s gravitational field. As a result, a close approach to the Earth took place at a distance of about 50000 km on December 1, 2020. Despite the fact that the Centaur escaped back into a new orbit around the Sun in March 2021, it is of special interest for research, in particular, to consider the impact of non-gravitational effects on its orbital characteristics. Thus, it was calculated that the maximum displacement of the object trajectory due to the influence of solar radiation pressure over 15 years (the next close approach will take place in 2036) can be about 10.3-13.5 km, depending on the albedo. Estimations of the Yarkovsky effect showed that the magnitude of the expected change in the semi-major axis of Centaur’s orbit is from -8.1 • 10 −13 to 1.6 10 −13 , depending on the angle of its rotation.
Nanoindenting the Chelyabinsk meteorite to learn about impact deflection effects in asteroids

Abstract:The Chelyabinsk meteorite is a highly shocked, low porosity, ordinary chondrite, probably similar to S- or Q-type asteroids. Therefore, nanoindentation experiments on this meteorite allow us to obtain key data to understand the physical properties of near-Earth asteroids. Tests at different length scales provide information about the local mechanical properties of the minerals forming this meteorite: reduced Young's modulus, hardness, elastic recovery, and fracture toughness. Those tests are also useful to understand the potential to deflect threatening asteroids using a kinetic projectile. We found that the differences in mechanical properties between regions of the meteorite, which increase or reduce the efficiency of impacts, are not a result of compositional differences. A low mean particle size, attributed to repetitive shock, can increase hardness, while low porosity promotes a higher momentum multiplication. Momentum multiplication is the ratio between the change in momentum of a target due to an impact, and the momentum of the projectile, and, therefore higher values imply more efficient impacts. In the Chelyabinsk meteorite, the properties of the light-colored lithology materials facilitate obtaining higher momentum multiplication values, compared to the other regions described for this meteorite. Also, we found a low value of fracture toughness in the shock-melt veins of Chelyabinsk, which would promote the ejection of material after an impact and, therefore, increase the momentum multiplication. These results are relevant considering the growing interest in missions to test asteroid deflection, such as the recent collaboration between the European Space Agency and NASA, known as the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission.

Abstract:While no known asteroid poses a threat to Earth for at least the next century, the catalog of near-Earth asteroids is incomplete for objects whose impacts would produce regional devastation. Several approaches have been proposed to potentially prevent an asteroid impact with Earth by deflecting or disrupting an asteroid. A test of kinetic impact technology was identified as the highest priority space mission related to asteroid mitigation. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is the first full-scale test of kinetic impact technology. The mission's target asteroid was Dimorphos, the secondary member of the S-type binary near-Earth asteroid (65803) Didymos. This binary asteroid system was chosen to enable ground-based telescopes to quantify the asteroid deflection caused by DART's impact. While past missions have utilized impactors to investigate the properties of small bodies those earlier missions were not intended to deflect their targets and did not achieve measurable deflections. Here we report the DART spacecraft's autonomous kinetic impact into Dimorphos and reconstruct the impact event, including the timeline leading to impact, the location and nature of the DART impact site, and the size and shape of Dimorphos. The successful impact of the DART spacecraft with Dimorphos and the resulting change in Dimorphos's orbit demonstrates that kinetic impactor technology is a viable technique to potentially defend Earth if necessary.

Abstract:Morphological mapping is a fundamental step in studying the processes that shaped an asteroid surface. Yet, it is challenging and often requires multiple independent assessments by trained experts. Here, we present fast methods to detect and characterize meaningful terrains from the topographic roughness: entropy of information, and local mean surface orientation. We apply our techniques to Didymos and Dimorphos, the target asteroids of NASA's DART mission: first attempt to deflect an asteroid. Our methods reliably identify morphological units at multiple scales. The comparative study reveals various terrain types, signatures of processes that transformed Didymos and Dimorphos. Didymos shows the most heterogeneity and morphology that indicate recent resurfacing events. Dimorphos is comparatively rougher than Didymos, which may result from the formation process of the binary pair and past interaction between the two bodies. Our methods can be readily applied to other bodies and data sets.

Abstract:Asteroids are leftover pieces from the era of planet formation that help us understand conditions in the early Solar System. Unlike larger planetary bodies that were subject to global thermal modification during and subsequent to their formation, these small bodies have kept at least some unmodified primordial material from the solar nebula. However, the structural properties of asteroids have been modified considerably since their formation. Thus, we can find among them a great variety of physical configurations and dynamical histories. In fact, with only a few possible exceptions, all asteroids have been modified or completely disrupted many times during the age of the Solar System. This picture is supported by data from space mission encounters with asteroids that show much diversity of shape, bulk density, surface morphology, and other features. Moreover, the gravitational attraction of these bodies is so small that some physical processes occur in a manner far removed from our common experience on Earth. Thus, each visit to a small body has generated as many questions as it has answered. In this review we discuss the current state of research into asteroid disruption processes, focusing on collisional and rotational mechanisms. We find that recent advances in modeling catastrophic disruption by collisions have provided important insights into asteroid internal structures and a deeper understanding of asteroid families. Rotational disruption, by tidal encounters or thermal effects, is responsible for altering many smaller asteroids, and is at the origin of many binary asteroids and oddly shaped bodies.

Abstract:The Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) proposes to retrieve a near-Earth asteroid and position it in a lunar distant retrograde orbit (DRO) for later study, crewed exploration, and ultimately resource exploitation. During the Caltech Space Challenge, a recent workshop to design a crewed mission to a captured asteroid in a DRO, it became apparent that the asteroid's low escape velocity (<1 cm s$^{-1}$) would permit the escape of asteroid particles during any meaningful interaction with astronauts or robotic probes. This Note finds that up to 5% of escaped asteroid fragments will cross Earth-geosynchronous orbits and estimates the risk to satellites from particle escapes or complete disruption of a loosely bound rubble pile.

Abstract:Context. Most small asteroids (<50 km in diameter) are the result of the breakup of a larger parent body and are often considered to be rubble-pile objects. Similar structures are expected for the secondaries of small asteroid binaries, including Dimorphos, the smaller component of the 65803 Didymos binary system and the target of NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) and ESA's Hera mission. The DART impact occurs on September 26th, 2022 and it will alter the orbital period of Dimorphos around Didymos. Aims. In this work we assume Dimorphos-like bodies with a rubble-pile structure, and quantify the effects of boulder packing in its interior on the post-impact morphology, degree of shape change and material ejection processes. Methods. We used the Bern SPH shock physics code to numerically model hypervelocity impacts into small, 160 m in diameter rubble-pile asteroids, with a variety of boulder distributions. Results. We find that the post-impact target morphology is most sensitive to the mass-fraction of boulders in the target, while the asteroid deflection efficiency depends on both the mass-fraction of boulders in the target and on the boulder size-distribution close to the impact point. Our results may also have important implications for the structure of small asteroids.
The shape and structure of small asteroids as a result of sub-catastrophic collisions

Abstract:The overall shape, internal structure and surface morphology of small bodies such as asteroids and comets are determined to a large degree by the last global-scale impact or disruption event. Depending on the specific energy, impacts lead to a large spectrum of outcomes. Sub-catastrophic disruptions take place in an energy range between cratering impacts and catastrophic disruptions. Although less energetic than catastrophic events, they can still significantly alter the overall shape and structure of the target body. This has been demonstrated recently in the case of bi-lobe cometary nuclei (Jutzi and Benz, 2017). Here we present results of a subsequent study on the shapes of asteroids resulting from such collisions. Sizes ranging from a few hundred meters to a few kilometers are considered. We show that impacts on elongated rotating asteroids frequently lead to the formation of contact binaries. Our results confirm that this mechanism is robust and works for a large range of asteroid sizes and impact velocities. Scaling-laws for the prediction of the size and velocity dependent specific energies required for successful bi-lobe formation are presented. Based on these scaling laws, the expected frequency of such sub-catastrophic impacts is calculated and is compared to the one of catastrophic disruptions, which require much higher specific energies and are more rare. Our analysis suggest that the shapes and structures of a large fraction of small asteroids as observed today may be the result of the last major sub-catastrophic impact.

Abstract:Tumbling asteroids belong to a small group of objects, whose angular velocity vector is unaligned with any of its principal axes of inertia. This leads to challenging efforts to model the trajectory of any spacecraft designed to orbit these bodies. In this work, we deepen a previous study on this topic, concerning the asteroid (99942) Apophis during its close encounter with the Earth in 2029. We analyze the orbital behaviour of a spacecraft orbiting the asteroid during this event, by including the effects of the changes of orientation of the spin axis of the asteroid, depending on two sets of initial conditions. The global dynamics of the spacecraft around the target are analyzed using three approaches, MEGNO, PMap, and Time-Series prediction. We confirm that no spacecraft with natural orbits could survive the high perturbations caused by the close encounter with our planet.

Abstract:Measurements from the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)-Shoemaker Laser Rangefinder (NLR) indicate that asteroid 433 Eros is a consolidated body with a complex shape dominated by collisions. The offset between the asteroid's center of mass and center of figure indicates a small deviation from a homogeneous internal structure that is most simply explained by variations in mechanical structure. Regional-scale relief and slope distributions show evidence for control of topography by a competent substrate. Impact crater morphology is influenced by both gravity and structural control. Small-scale topography reveals ridges and grooves that may be generated by impact-related fracturing.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We investigated the propagation of energy and momentum inside a small gravitational aggregate asteroid following a hypervelocity impact, comparable to NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) on asteroid Dimorphos. We show that the impact energy damps rapidly inside different kinds of granular structures, unable to reach the antipodal hemisphere of the impact. However, global reshaping of the asteroid after the formation of a sizeable (${\gt}1/3$ of target size) crater causes meter-range displacement of boulders on the antipodal hemisphere due to mass rearrangement to achieve a new equilibrium shape. As a result, a surface depression opposite to the crater is formed, which may produce some surface refreshment. The boulder mass ejection following the synthetic DART-like impact is estimated to be at least $0.1\, {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the mass of the Dimorphos-like target, in agreement with recent detections of boulders ejected from the actual DART impact.

Abstract:NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission was the first to demonstrate asteroid deflection, and the mission's Level 1 requirements guided its planetary defense investigations. Here, we summarize DART's achievement of those requirements. On 2022 September 26, the DART spacecraft impacted Dimorphos, the secondary member of the Didymos near-Earth asteroid binary system, demonstrating an autonomously navigated kinetic impact into an asteroid with limited prior knowledge for planetary defense. Months of subsequent Earth-based observations showed that the binary orbital period was changed by –33.24 minutes, with two independent analysis methods each reporting a 1 σ uncertainty of 1.4 s. Dynamical models determined that the momentum enhancement factor, β , resulting from DART's kinetic impact test is between 2.4 and 4.9, depending on the mass of Dimorphos, which remains the largest source of uncertainty. Over five dozen telescopes across the globe and in space, along with the Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids, have contributed to DART's investigations. These combined investigations have addressed topics related to the ejecta, dynamics, impact event, and properties of both asteroids in the binary system. A year following DART's successful impact into Dimorphos, the mission has achieved its planetary defense requirements, although work to further understand DART's kinetic impact test and the Didymos system will continue. In particular, ESA's Hera mission is planned to perform extensive measurements in 2027 during its rendezvous with the Didymos–Dimorphos system, building on DART to advance our knowledge and continue the ongoing international collaboration for planetary defense.

Abstract:We present results of numerical simulations that show that Earth's tidal forces can both distort and disrupt Earth-crossing asteroids that have weak “rubble-pile” structures. Building on previous studies, we consider more realistic asteroid shapes and trajectories, test a variety of spin rates and axis orientations, and employ a dissipation algorithm to treat more accurately collisions between the particles that make up the model asteroid. We explore a large parameter space, including the asteroid's periapseq, encounter velocity with the Earthv∞, spin periodP, initial spin axis orientation, and body orientation at periapse.We parameterize the simulation outcomes by the amount of mass stripped from the asteroid during a flyby. Our most severe disruptions result in fragment trains similar in character to the “string of pearls” created when Comet D/Shoemaker–Levy 9 was disrupted near Jupiter in 1992. Less catastrophic disruptions cause material to be stripped off in more isotropic fashion, leaving a central remnant with a characteristic distorted shape. Some ejecta can enter into stable orbits around the remnant, creating a binary or multiple system. Even when no mass is lost tidal forces and torques can modify the asteroid's shape and spin.Our results show that mass loss is enhanced for small values ofq,v∞, andP, and depends to a certain extent on the body's initial spin orientation (for example, retrograde rotation reduces mass loss). An elongated asteroid was found to be far easier to disrupt than a spherical one, though the orientation of the ellipsoid at periapse can noticeably change the outcome. The size and orbital distribution of the ejecta are discussed, along with the applications of this technique towards an understanding of doublet craters, crater chains, and asteroids with peculiar shapes and spins.

Abstract:The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is the first planetary defense mission to demonstrate the kinetic deflection technique. The DART spacecraft will collide with the asteroid Dimorphos, the smaller component of the binary asteroid system (65803) Didymos. The DART impact will excavate surface/subsurface materials of Dimorphos, leading to the formation of a crater and/or some magnitude of reshaping (i.e., shape change without significant mass loss). The ejecta may eventually hit Didymos's surface. If the kinetic energy delivered to the surface is high enough, reshaping may also occur in Didymos, given its near-critical spin rate. Reshaping on either body will modify the mutual gravitational field, leading to a reshaping-induced orbital period change, in addition to the impact-induced orbital period change. If left unaccounted for, this could lead to an erroneous interpretation of the effect of the kinetic deflection technique. Here we report the results of full two-body problem simulations that explore how reshaping influences the mutual dynamics. In general, we find that the orbital period becomes shorter linearly with increasing reshaping magnitude. If Didymos's shortest axis shrinks by similar to 0.7 m, or Dimorphos's intermediate axis shrinks by similar to 2 m, the orbital period change would be comparable to the Earth-based observation accuracy, similar to 7.3 s. Constraining the reshaping magnitude will decouple the reshaping- and impact-induced orbital period changes; Didymos's reshaping may be constrained by observing its spin period change, while Dimorphos's reshaping will likely be difficult to constrain but will be investigated by the ESA's Hera mission that will visit Didymos in late 2026.

Abstract:On September 26, 2022, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission successfully impacted Dimorphos, the natural satellite of the binary near-Earth asteroid (65803) Didymos. Numerical simulations of the impact provide a means to explore target surface material properties and structures, consistent with the observed momentum deflection efficiency, ejecta cone geometry, and ejected mass. Our simulation, which best matches observations, indicates that Dimorphos is weak, with a cohesive strength of less than a few pascals (Pa), similar to asteroids (162173) Ryugu and (101955) Bennu. We find that a bulk density of Dimorphos, rhoB, lower than 2400 kg/m3, and a low volume fraction of boulders (<40 vol%) on the surface and in the shallow subsurface, are consistent with measured data from the DART experiment. These findings suggest Dimorphos is a rubble pile that might have formed through rotational mass shedding and re-accumulation from Didymos. Our simulations indicate that the DART impact caused global deformation and resurfacing of Dimorphos. ESA's upcoming Hera mission may find a re-shaped asteroid, rather than a well-defined crater.
