Abstract:We present a novel dilution device designed for accurately and robustly diluting dense suspensions to enable real-time particle characterization using optical imaging systems. The device employs tangential flow filtration, allowing for continuous operation at high solid weight fractions typical in industrial crystallization processes. It demonstrates the ability to monitor suspensions continuously over 24 hours and to quickly adapt to changing particle densities, whilst continuously enabling accurate measurements. This paper presents also a study of the impact of particle density on measurement accuracy; extensive testing confirms the reliability of the dilution device for distributions of various particle sizes and shapes. The dilution device successfully tracks the evolution of the particle size and shape distribution (PSSD) during cooling crystallization. The innovation presented here, overcomes the limitations of existing methods hindered by high particle densities, providing a significant advancement in real-time monitoring and characterization capabilities under realistic conditions. This technology holds potential for broad applications, including the validation of new crystallization theories and, thus enhanced development of efficient crystallization processes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the challenge of real-time particle characterization in high-density suspensions. Specifically, existing optical imaging techniques are affected by particle overlap and reduced light transmission when dealing with high-density suspensions, making it difficult to accurately measure particle size and shape distribution (PSSD). Therefore, the authors designed a new automatic dilution device that continuously dilutes high-concentration suspensions through tangential flow filtration technology, enabling real-time and accurate characterization of particles. This device can operate stably for long periods during industrial crystallization processes and adapt to changes in particle density, providing important technical support for real-time monitoring under practical conditions. ### Summary of Main Issues: 1. **Challenges in Particle Characterization in High-Density Suspensions**: Existing techniques struggle to accurately measure particle size and shape distribution in high-density suspensions. 2. **Need for Real-Time Monitoring**: Real-time monitoring of particle evolution is required during industrial crystallization processes, but high-density suspensions limit the application of existing techniques. 3. **Automation and Reliability**: There is a need for a device that can automatically and reliably dilute high-concentration suspensions to support long-term real-time monitoring. ### Solution: - **Tangential Flow Filtration Technology**: Removes some particles through tangential flow filtration to generate a clear liquid for diluting suspension samples. - **Automatic Dilution Device**: Designed an automatic dilution device that can continuously and stably dilute high-concentration suspensions, ensuring real-time particle characterization. - **Real-Time Imaging System**: Combines stereoscopic imaging technology to achieve detailed characterization of particles in the diluted suspension. Through these innovations, the device overcomes the limitations of particle characterization in high-density suspensions, providing a powerful tool for optimizing and theoretically validating industrial crystallization processes.
