Abstract:This work characterizes a phenomenon in direct laser written directional couplers where the splitting ratio for output light is dependent on the input polarization state. In general, for laser written waveguides, different coupling strengths exist for different polarization states of the input light. If the linear polarization state of the input light is not aligned with one of the symmetry axes of the system, an additional amplitude beating is imposed on the transfer of light in directional couplers of different interaction length. We present results for in-plane and out of plane directional couplers, which are supported by theoretical analysis. These new results provide insights for understanding and controlling polarization properties of directional couplers and larger photonic circuits.

Abstract:A high-performance broadband polarization-independent directional coupler is designed by using asymmetric-waveguides configuration on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Through the design of cascaded directional couplers, the coupling characteristics of the light with the orthogonally polarized transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) can be manipulated, so that the coupling strength could be equivalent between TE and TM polarizations within an ultra-broadband. Couplers with 50% splitting ratio are designed and simulated for operating in the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for both polarizations. Within the 100 nm wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, the deviations of splitting ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±3.3% and ±6.2%, respectively. And within the 200 nm wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the deviations for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±9.0% and ±7.8%, respectively. The footprint of this polarization-independent directional coupler is only 21 μm × 1.6 μm.

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Two novel wide-angle and broadband 2D photonic crystal polarization splitters (PCPS) which are the multilayer wavy films (MWF) structure and arrow-head like structure are designed based on the autocloning method. Plane wave expansion (PWE) method is used to calculate the band structure and explain the reason for the wide-angle and broadband polarization splitting effect. In order to verify the result derived from PWE method, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to test and measure the polarization effect for the MWF structure.

Abstract:Based on the 2D-PC wave multilayer film structure, a method to broaden the bandwidth of polarization beam splitter is proposed, which is composed of two different thickness periodic film stacks. Combined with the evaluation function of polarization splitting characteristic, the particle swarm optimization method is employed to design the optimal structural parameters. A broadband and compact polarization beam splitter is acquired, in which the center wavelength is 565 nm and its working range has achieved 220 nm with the average extinction ratio over 30 dB. In addition, by using the finite difference time domain method, the band structure and transmission spectrum of the wave-structure multilayer film are calculated, the angle sensitivity of the structure is investigated in detail. And we also study the electromagnetic field in the wavy-structure. Simulation results prove that the structure composed of the two different thickness periodic film stacks can avoid the discontinuity of bandgap, and PSO method can accelerate the convergence of the optimization algorithm and extend the bandwidth effectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:Integrated optical devices are becoming a common tool in modern optical science and engineering. This devices should be designed to allow for precise control and manipulation of light. The femtosecond laser written (FSLW) photonic chips have proven to cope with the most current demands of integrated photonics. However, up to date the polarization degree of freedom has rarely been exploited in experiments performed on the FSLW integrated platform. The main obstacle is an intrinsically low anisotropy of laser written waveguides, preventing the design of polarizing integrated devices with small footprint. In this Letter we demonstrate the approach based on stress-induced anisotropy allowing us to decrease the size of polarizing directional couplers fabricated with the FSLW technology by almost an order of magnitude. We provide an accurate account for the effects emerging in waveguides written in a close proximity to each over.

Abstract:We study analytically the polarization behaviour of directional couplers composed of birefringent waveguides, showing that they can induce polarization transformations that depend on the specific input-output path considered. On the basis of this study, we propose and demonstrate experimentally, by femtosecond laser writing, directional couplers that are free from this problem and also yield a polarization independent power-splitting ratio. More in detail, we devise two different approaches to realize such devices: the first one is based on local birefringence engineering, while the second one exploits ultra-low birefringence waveguides obtained by thermal annealing.

The Jones transformation matrix representing a round trip of the ray in the laser cavity has been obtained. The properties of self-reproduction of polarization mode have been proved. The variation regulation of polarization loss with the incidence angle to the end face of the laser medium was discussed, and the calculation results were presented.

Abstract:As many silicon nanophotonic devices are polarization-dependent, a polarization beam splitter that divides TE and TM modes is an essential component for photonic integrated circuits. Various structures have been proposed for polarization splitters, but it is still challenging to simultaneously achieve low insertion loss, high extinction ratio, compact size and simplicity of fabrication. In this paper, we combine new machine learning methods with the principle of multimode interference to propose a novel design for a polarization beam splitter. Our design has low insertion loss (-0.17dB/-0.42dB) and high extinction ratio (-23.1dB/-23.4dB) at the central wavelength of 1550nm for TE/TM modes, with compact size of 2×19μm2 and fabrication constraints strictly satisfied. Furthermore, our design is a standard 220nm-thick single-layer device for the silicon-on-insulator platform, without any auxiliary structures, making it easy for fabrication. Since our design cannot be optimized by the most commonly used methods, we adopt several specialized techniques to Bayesian optimization for inverse design. In this paper, we also share these skills which are simple but effective, possible to solve much more complicated design problems than others.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:Three kinds of polarization beam splitters are designed by using a simple metal-dielectric multilayered structure with strong nonlocality. It is found that the equal frequency contour for the transverse electric polarization is a small circle when the average permittivity is close to zero. At the same time, the equal frequency contour for the transverse magnetic polarization turns to be two branches of parabolas due to the surface plasmon-induced nonlocal effect. Based on the dramatic difference between dispersions of the two polarizations, three kinds of polarization beam splitters are demonstrated, including the ultrathin ones, which may have important applications in polarization-sensitive absorbers and compact optical devices.

Abstract:Optical systems provide a new and practical platform for studying Bloch oscillations. This study investigates the fundamental-mode propagation of polarization-dependent Bloch oscillations. By using the three-dimensional properties of femtosecond laser direct writing, we fabricate a polymer-based gradient waveguide array and determine the Bloch oscillations under different polarization inputs by using the birefringence gradient and the equivalent refractive index, thus exhibiting a polarization-dependent Bloch period. Our results provide a new, to the best of our knowledge, paradigm for two-dimensional optical Bloch modes and highlight the influence of optical polarization in the same system, which provides a possibility to observe richer physics related to Bloch oscillations in one structure.

Abstract:In this work, we explore the potential of spin-based integrated devices using polariton waveguides that form codirectional couplers. For suitable coupler parameters, a transfer of condensates between the arms of the coupler, occurs leading to the observation of Josephson-like oscillations. The ability to tune the periodicity of these oscillations opens the way to the design of polaritonic circuits in which the directionality of the signal towards the output terminals can be controlled. We also investigate the response of the devices to linearly polarized excitation, delving into the dynamics of linear polarization at the output terminals of long couplers, providing valuable insights into the potential applications of spin-based polariton devices, including polariton switches and logic gates with efficient operation. Our results are supported by numerical simulations based on generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the dynamics of coherent polaritons in spatially non-uniform system. We show, how the coupling and the controllable spin degree of freedom in polariton couplers opens avenues for innovative optical architectures and functionalities.

Abstract:This paper presents composite beam splitters realized with polymer materials for developing photonic integrated circuits. We used organic-inorganic hybrid polymer materials to form this composite beam splitter realized with step-index (SI) core profiles. We used the alternating direction implicit technique of the Rsoft CAD BeamPROP solver to design and analyze these beam splitters. We successfully examined and manipulated the beam splitter's polarization dependency to obtain a 99% output efficiency with a 50:50 splitting ratio. The SI beam splitter exhibits an excess loss of 0.014 dB. When we apply polarized light in this beam splitter, the excess loss increases to 2 dB, and this loss gradually decreases as the angle of incident light increases. The excess loss reduces to 0.05 dB at the 31-degree angles of the incident polarized light. We also investigated the crosstalk of this beam splitter by varying the wavelength, and it is evident that the lowest crosstalk is -19.77 dB at the polarized angle of 31°.

Abstract:In photonic integrated circuits, information is usually encoded in the optical path. In this work, based on the multi-mode dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide, we numerically design a directional coupler, which can divide the different waveguide eigenmodes into different optical paths. The results show a possibility to encode information onto different waveguide modes. We also experimentally demonstrate that the splitting ratio of this directional coupler structure can be tuned without changing its size.
