Abstract:We present a 16-channel thin film lithium niobate optical phased array working at the near-infrared wavelengths. We utilize electro-optic modulation and wavelength tuning to realize beam steering of 24° and 8°, respectively, in two dimensions.

Abstract:We demonstrate 32-channel dispersive optical phased arrays on a Si3N4-on-SOI integration platform. The phase difference is introduced by the arrayed waveguide. Beam steering in phased-array direction with an aliasing-free range of 22.4 degrees and free spectrum ranges of similar to 60 nm and similar to 6 nm is achieved. Meanwhile, the main lobe is deflected simultaneously by 19.67 degrees in the other direction by tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1630 nm. Measurement results show that the dispersive optical phased array provides a compact, low-power and massively parallel solution for LiDAR applications.

Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) with high speed, low power consumption, and low insertion loss are appealing for many applications, such as light detection and ranging, free-space communication, image projection, and imaging. These OPAs can be achieved by fully leveraging the high electro-optic modulation speed, low driving voltage, and low optical loss of integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonics. Here we present an integrated LN OPA operating in the near-infrared regime, demonstrating a 24 * 8° two-dimensional beam steering, a far-field beam spot with full-width at half-maximum of 2 * 0.6°, and a side lobe suppression level of 10 dB. Additionally, our OPA's phase modulator features a half wave voltage of 6 V. Our OPA opens the door of high speed, low power-consumption, and low loss integrated LN OPAs for various applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 63-channel grating-lobe-free optical phased array, in which end-fire antennas were fabricated with a pitch of 775 nm to eliminate grating lobe. Phase mismatch was configured to suppress the optical crosstalk in the dense waveguides. Two-dimensional beam steering within 16°× 2.7° were presented by thermal phase shifting and wavelength tuning.

Abstract:The realization of high-speed, low-power optical phased array (OPA) on thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is considered an ideal solution for the next generation of solid-state beam steering. Most reported on-chip two-dimensional optical phased arrays suffer from issues such as large antenna spacing, high power consumption and complex wiring due to independent control of array elements. To address these challenges while fully utilizing the benefits of the LNOI platform, we propose a two-dimensional beam-scanning OPA based on lithium niobate (LN) waveguides. We design a multi-layer cascaded domain engineering structure inside the LN waveguide, combined with wavelength tuning, to enable two-dimensional beam scanning with single electrode controlling the OPA. Through simulation, we achieve a 42°×9.2° two-dimensional beam steering. Compared to existing on-chip integrated OPAs, this work offers significant advantages in increasing integration, simplifying control units and reducing power consumption.

Abstract:An on-chip optical phased array(OPA)is considered as a promising solution for next generation solid-state beam steering.However,most of the reported OPAs suffer from low operating bandwidths,making them limited in many applications.We propose and demonstrate a high-speed 2D scanning OPA based on thin-film lithium niobate phase modulators with traveling-wave electrodes.The measured modulation bandwidth is up to 2.5 GHz.Moreover,an aperiodic array combined with a slab grating antenna is also used to suppress the grating lobes of far-field beams,which enables a large field of view(FOV)as well as small beam width.A 16-channel OPA dem-onstrates an FOV of 50°× 8.6° and a beam width of 0.73°× 2.8° in the phase tuning direction and the wavelength scanning direction,respectively.

Abstract:This study proposes a solid-state two-dimensional beam-steering device based on an electro-optical phased array (EOPA) in thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) and silicon nitride (SiN) hybrid platforms, thereby eliminating the requirement for the direct etching of TFLN. Electro-optic (EO) phase modulator array comprises cascaded multimode interference couplers with an SiN strip-loaded TFLN configuration, which is designed and fabricated via i-line photolithography. Each EO modulator element with an interaction region length of 1.56 cm consumed a minimum power of 3.2 pJ/π under a half-wave voltage of 3.64 V and had an estimated modulation speed of 1.2 GHz. Subsequently, an SiN dispersive antenna with a waveguide grating was tethered to the modulator array to form an EOPA, facilitating the out-of-plane radiation of highly defined near-infrared beams. A prepared EOPA utilized EO phase control and wavelength tuning near 1550 nm to achieve a field-of-view of 22° × 5° in the horizontal and vertical directions. The proposed hybrid integrated platform can potentially facilitate low-power and high-speed beam steering.

Abstract:The current approach to 2D optical phased array (OPA) encounters challenges, such as the requirement for a highly tunable laser that is incompatible with certain 2D beam-steering applications or significant power consumption, large antenna spacing and complex wiring resulting from independent control of array elements. To address these challenges, we propose an OPA architecture based on cascaded periodically poled LiNbO 3 sequences, a multi-layered domains engineered structure within the LiNbO 3 electro-optic crystal, only two control electronics to program the 2D beam-steering trajectory with a range of approximately θ y = ±20° and θ z = ±16° through simulations. This structure enables the uniform distribution of phase differences between adjacent array elements (adjacent domains) upon beam exit from the crystal, ensuring optimal performance. The aim of this study is to develop a methodology that employs domain engineering techniques for designing high-performance phase-controlled devices with customized functional units and sequences in electro-optical crystals. Our research has implications for emerging optoelectronic applications, such as customizable optical interconnects and integrated LiDAR systems.

Abstract:Abstract Optical phased arrays (OPAs) with the ability of dynamic beam-steering hold great promise for industrial applications. Although they potentially offer high-resolution, high-speed and wide-angle beam-steering, 2D beam-steering has only been achieved by 1D OPAs with wavelength-tuning or by 2D OPAs containing enormous numbers of elements, thereby significantly increasing the system complexity and power consumption. Here we demonstrate a liquid-crystal-tunable Bragg-reflector waveguide outcoupler integrated with a 1D OPA. The output beam angle is controlled by an electric-field applied to the liquid crystal between the Bragg-mirrors, independently from steering along a second axis with the OPA. Our proof-of-concept demonstration with an 8-channel OPA shows 2D beam-steering with a 16° × 15° field-of-view and 12 ms × 14 μs time-response. Our approach opens a practical way for scalable OPAs capable of single wavelength 2D beam-steering, as well as demonstrating a strategy for the integration of liquid crystal materials with silicon photonics.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical phased array that consists of two subarrays based on the silicon on insulator (SOI) platform, each subarray including 16 independent channels. The demonstrated field of view of the optical phased array is 36.6∘×32.6∘ with a spot size of 1.68∘×0.0673∘. A steering range of 32.6° is achieved by combining two subarrays with different periods and tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1600 nm. In another dimension, the steering is realized by introducing phase differences between channels.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 1 x 256 optical phased array based on the tri-layer Si3N4-on-Si platform. By optimizing the thickness and vertical position of the Si3N4 overlay, the grating antenna exhibits a ultra-low emission rate of 13.9 dB/cm at 1550 nm and a large bandwidth of 120 nm. Based on the optimized Si3N4 assisted grating antenna, the OPA realizes an ultra-sharp beam divergence of 0.154 degrees x 0.0435 degrees, a two-dimensional beam steering range of 45.6 degrees x 16.1 degrees , and a side lobe suppression ratio better than 10.8 dB.

Abstract:Optical phased array (OPA) is a promising beam steering component for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems. For most LiDAR applications, two-dimensional (2D, lateral and longitudinal) beam steering with large field of view is required. To achieve large lateral and longitudinal field of view, waveguide with nonuniform spacing and broadband tunable laser source is commonly utilized, resulting in complex structure and high cost. Here, a 2D OPA with large field of view is proposed and demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator platform. Assisted by an improved optical antenna and polarization switch, lateral and longitudinal steering range could be both significantly improved. The experimental results show the steering ranges are 99.24° × 15.62° and 96.48° × 16.08° for transverse electric mode and transverse magnetic mode, respectively. The proposed scheme provides a promising approach to realize the integrated OPA with large field of view.

Abstract:Chip-scale optical phased arrays could enable compact beam steering and LIDAR for autonomous vehicles, precision robotics, and free-space optical communications. Because these applications demand wide angle beam steering as well as high optical power in the output beam, a natural design choice would be to space the array emitters at a half-wavelength pitch, as is common in radiofrequency phased arrays. Optical phased arrays, however, unlike RF phased arrays, have been limited by the tradeoff between field of view (i.e. angle steering) and beamforming efficiency (i.e. optical power in the output beam). This tradeoff exists because optical phased arrays rely on waveguides as emitters, which suffer from strong crosstalk when placed in close proximity relative to their mode size. Here we overcome these limitations and demonstrate a platform for optical phased arrays with 180° field of view, where more than 72 percent of the power is carried in a single diffraction-limited beam even when steered up to 60° off-axis. Our platform leverages high index-contrast, dispersion-engineered waveguides spaced one half-wavelength apart without incurring crosstalk.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a space-fed beamforming approach capable of steering beams up to & PLUSMN;70 & DEG; with a focal ratio (F/D) reduced to 0.27 and a scan loss remained 4 dB. It is implemented based on an mmWave phase reconfigurable metasurface, and an unconventional array-fed architecture. By doing so, while the total profile of conventional space-fed phased arrays can be significantly reduced, specifications such as scan range and scan loss can be simultaneously improved. Compared with conventional phased array systems, such specifications are unique, and can be used to realize low-profile, cost-effective, space-fed phased arrays requiring ultrawide coverages at mmWave frequencies.

Abstract:A 1times4 and a 1times6 fiber-type optical phased array with PZT phase shifters have been implemented respectively. Fibers are adopted as transmission paths and emitting antenna in the optical phased array system. By using the feedback optimization we have proposed before, the inaccuracy of fiber length is overcome. By adjusting the phase shift of each PZT phase shifter repeatedly according to the algorithm we have proposed for optimization, 1-D beam forming and beam steering in a short period of time have been observed. Compared with the 2times2 fiber-type optical phased array experiment we have done before, the beams get much narrower and grating lobes are suppressed to some extent. Moreover, the effect of the ambient temperature variation on the stability of two-fibers interference is primarily studied.

Abstract:We present a two-dimensional (2D) optical phased array (OPA) with 8 x 8 elements in which light is electro-optically controlled by silicon phase modulators. The randomly distributed initial phases are calibrated through an interference technique to achieve a beam divergence of 0.92 degrees x 0.32 degrees and a scanning range of 8.9 degrees x 2.2 degrees. A bandwidth of 324 MHz and beam steering at a point-to-point speed of 20 MHz was realized on the fabricated chip. Systematic analysis revealed that the 2D electro-optical OPA is promising and feasible for many applications ranging from optical communication to light detection and ranging (LiDAR).

Abstract:An optical phased array (OPA) on a chip, as a novel non-mechanical beam steering technique, has attracted much attention in various applications. However, due to the challenges in fabrication and the limited transparency window of the material for visible wavelengths, current OPAs are mainly focuses on the infrared wavelengths. Despite the progress, the visible light OPAs remain the challenges to not only simultaneously work in blue, green and red light, but also implement beam steering in two dimensions for the single-wavelength. In this paper, an 8-channel broadband OPA is demonstrated, which enables two-dimensional beam steering in visible light. Along the longitudinal direction, the beam steering angle of 0.7° at 585 nm is achieved by tuning phase shifts. Along the transverse direction, the demonstrated OPA implements beam steering angle of 4.49° at 585 nm by tuning polarization degrees and 25.97° at 488–610 nm by tuning wavelengths. Therefore, the demonstrated OPA holds significant promise for commercial applications such as visual projection and free-space optical communications.
