Abstract:We extend a general result showing that the asymptotic behavior of high moments, factorial or standard, of random variables, determines the asymptotically normality, from the one dimensional to the multidimensional setting. This approach differs from the usual moment method which requires that the moments of each fixed order converge. We illustrate our results by considering a joint distribution of the numbers of bins (having the same, finite, capacity) containing a prescribed number of balls in a classical allocation scheme.

Abstract:The characteristic function of the folded normal distribution and its moment function are derived. The entropy of the folded normal distribution and the Kullback–Leibler from the normal and half normal distributions are approximated using Taylor series. The accuracy of the results are also assessed using different criteria. The maximum likelihood estimates and confidence intervals for the parameters are obtained using the asymptotic theory and bootstrap method. The coverage of the confidence intervals is also examined.

Abstract:We show that if a permutation statistic can be written as a linear combination of bivincular patterns, then its moments can be expressed as a linear combination of factorials with constant coefficients. This generalizes a result of Zeilberger. We use an approach of Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, previously applied on set partitions and matchings. In addition, we give a new proof of the central limit theorem (CLT) for the number of occurrences of classical patterns, which uses a lemma of Burstein and Hästö. We give a simple interpretation of this lemma and an analogous lemma that would imply the CLT for the number of occurrences of any vincular pattern. Furthermore, we obtain explicit formulas for the moments of the descents and the minimal descents statistics. The latter is used to give a new direct proof of the fact that we do not necessarily have asymptotic normality of the number of pattern occurrences in the case of bivincular patterns. Closed forms for some of the higher moments of several popular statistics on permutations are also obtained.

Abstract:We study the spectra of MANOVA estimators for variance component covariance matrices in multivariate random effects models. When the dimensionality of the observations is large and comparable to the number of realizations of each random effect, we show that the empirical spectra of such estimators are well-approximated by deterministic laws. The Stieltjes transforms of these laws are characterized by systems of fixed-point equations, which are numerically solvable by a simple iterative procedure. Our proof uses operator-valued free probability theory, and we establish a general asymptotic freeness result for families of rectangular orthogonally-invariant random matrices, which is of independent interest. Our work is motivated in part by the estimation of components of covariance between multiple phenotypic traits in quantitative genetics, and we specialize our results to common experimental designs that arise in this application.
Inconsistency of diagonal scaling under high-dimensional limit: a replica approach

Abstract:In this note, we claim that diagonal scaling of a sample covariance matrix is asymptotically inconsistent if the ratio of the dimension to the sample size converges to a positive constant, where population is assumed to be Gaussian with a spike covariance model. Our non-rigorous proof relies on the replica method developed in statistical physics. In contrast to similar results known in literature on principal component analysis, the strong inconsistency is not observed. Numerical experiments support the derived formulas.

Abstract:We summarize significant classical results on (in)determinacy of measures in terms of their finite positive integer order moments. Well-known is the role of the smallest eigenvalues of Hankel matrices, starting from Hamburger's results a century ago and ending with the great progress made only in recent times by C. Berg and collaborators. We describe here known results containing necessary and sufficient conditions for moment (in)determinacy in both Hamburger and Stieltjes moment problems. In our exposition we follow an approach different from that commonly used. There are novelties well complementing the existing theory. Among them are: (a) to emphasize on the geometric interpretation of the indeterminacy conditions; (b) exploit fine properties of the eigenvalues of perturbed symmetric matrices allowing to derive new lower bounds for the smallest eigenvalues of Hankel matrices; these bounds are used for concluding indeterminacy; (c) provide new arguments to confirm classical results; (d) give new numerical illustrations involving commonly used probability distributions.

Asymptotic symmetry and group invariance for randomization

Abstract:Symmetry is a cornerstone of much of mathematics, and many probability distributions possess symmetries characterized by their invariance to a collection of group actions. Thus, many mathematical and statistical methods rely on such symmetry holding and ostensibly fail if symmetry is broken. This work considers under what conditions a sequence of probability measures asymptotically gains such symmetry or invariance to a collection of group actions. Considering the many symmetries of the Gaussian distribution, this work effectively proposes a non-parametric type of central limit theorem. That is, a Lipschitz function of a high dimensional random vector will be asymptotically invariant to the actions of certain compact topological groups. Applications of this include a partial law of the iterated logarithm for uniformly random points in an $\ell_p^n$-ball and an asymptotic equivalence between classical parametric statistical tests and their randomization counterparts even when invariance assumptions are violated.

The Continuous Scale Behaviour of Random Cascading Model

Abstract:The traditional method of calculating factorial moments with discretely diminishing scale is generalized to the case of continuously varying scale. It is shown that the random cascading model currently used has a "chain effect" with continuously diminishing scale. Taking the actual processes of experiment into account, a revised model is proposed which can give good scaling property also for continuously varying scale when the volume and location of phase space region in consideration are fluctuating randomly. The fluctuation parameter of phase space region meeting this condition is insensitive to the model parameter ��. This kind of fluctuation of phase space is proved via Monte Carlo simulation to have no big influence upon the anomalous scale index.

Abstract:We generalise the known fact that for binomial $X_{n,k} \sim \mathrm{Bin}(n, k/n)$ one has $\inf_{k>1,n} \mathrm{P}(X_{n,k} \geq k) \geq \lim_{k \to 1+}\mathrm{P}(X_{2,k} \geq k) = 1/4$ to cover probabilities of exceeding a constant shift away from the mean. The proof is very short and the theorem yields the original result as a special case, as well as proving that an analogous result holds for the Poisson distribution. We furthermore prove a similar property holds for the family of beta distributions near their mode. Thanks to the connection between Binomial and Beta distributions, this allows us to shed some further light on the original result regarding Binomial probabilities.

On the Null Distribution of Bayes Factors in Linear Regression

Abstract:We show that under the null, the 2 log(Bayes factor) is asymptotically distributed as a weighted sum of chi-squared random variables with a shifted mean. This claim holds for Bayesian multi-linear regression with a family of conjugate priors, namely, the normal-inverse-gamma prior, the g-prior, and the normal prior. Our results have three immediate impacts. First, we can compute analytically a p-value associated with a Bayes factor without the need of permutation. We provide a software package that can evaluate the p-value associated with Bayes factor efficiently and accurately. Second, the null distribution is illuminating to some intrinsic properties of Bayes factor, namely, how Bayes factor quantitatively depends on prior and the genesis of Bartlett's paradox. Third, enlightened by the null distribution of Bayes factor, we formulate a novel scaled Bayes factor that depends less on the prior and is immune to Bartlett's paradox. When two tests have an identical p-value, the test with a larger power tends to have a larger scaled Bayes factor, a desirable property that is missing for the (unscaled) Bayes factor.

Abstract:With many pretreatment covariates and treatment factors, the classical factorial experiment often fails to balance covariates across multiple factorial effects simultaneously. Therefore, it is intuitive to restrict the randomization of the treatment factors to satisfy certain covariate balance criteria, possibly conforming to the tiers of factorial effects and covariates based on their relative importances. This is rerandomization in factorial experiments. We study the asymptotic properties of this experimental design under the randomization inference framework without imposing any distributional or modeling assumptions of the covariates and outcomes. We derive the joint asymptotic sampling distribution of the usual estimators of the factorial effects, and show that it is symmetric, unimodal, and more "concentrated" at the true factorial effects under rerandomization than under the classical factorial experiment. We quantify this advantage of rerandomization using the notions of "central convex unimodality" and "peakedness" of the joint asymptotic sampling distribution. We also construct conservative large-sample confidence sets for the factorial effects.

The present note presents an explicit combinatorial sum for the factorial moments of the Poisson distribution of order $k$. Unlike the standard Poisson distribution (the case $k=1$), for $k>1$ the structure of the factorial moments is much more complicated. Some properties of the factorial moments of the Poisson distribution of order $k$ are elucidated in this note.

Abstract:The scale invariant Poisson processes on (0,infty) play a central but mildly disguised role in number theory, combinatorics, and genetics. They give the continuous limits which underly and unify diverse discrete structures, including the prime factorization of a uniformly chosen integer, the factorization of polynomials over finite fields, the decomposition into cycles of random permutations, the decomposition into components of random mappings, and the Ewens sampling formula. They deserve attention as one of the fundamental and central objects of probability theory.

Fluctuation analysis of geometric moment scale invariants with low resolution

Abstract:In the calculation of scale invariants of geometric moment, image scale changes will bring errors and cause the fluctuation of scale invariants because of the discrete digital image. The error expansion phenomenon is found through analyzing the anomalistic fluctuation of geometric moment scale invariants with low resolution. It is an unreasonable fluc-tuation enlarged from the small quantification error. A theory explains the origin of error expansion, and the formula of error calculation is given. Combined with the actual data, it is concluded that the error expansion will cause large fluctuation of geometric moment scale invariants and bring severe interference to its invariance with low resolution. Aiming at the cause of error expansion, a new definition of geometric absolute moment and its invariants is given, which will deny the error expansion efficiently. It is proven that the scale invariants of geometric absolute moment perform better compared with tradi-tional Hu’s invariants on low resolution through comparative experiments.

Abstract:The anomalous scaling of factorial moments with continuously diminishing scale is studied using a random cascading model. It is shown that the model currently used have the property of anomalous scaling only for descrete values of elementary cell size. A revised model is proposed which can give good scaling property also for continuously varying scale. It turns out that the strip integral has good scaling property provided the integral regions are chosen correctly, and that this property is insensitive to the concrete way of self-similar subdivision of phase space in the models.
