Abstract:Non-contact triggering the cells into thermal runaway (TR) can be a hot topic issue, and further research is needed to investigate the impact on cell failure behavior and state of charge (SOC) effects. This article applies infrared radiation (IR) to establish a non-contact cell TR experimental bench, and it profoundly investigates 50 A h Li(Ni0.6Co0.2Mn0.2)O2 TR behavior characteristic parameters with to different SOC, such as temperature change, mass loss, spatial temperature gradient, heat generation characteristics, and smoke release characteristics. Based on the experimental results of the 50 % SOC cell, the peak values of each TR characteristic are as follows: the maximum surface temperature is 613.5 °C. The maximum spatial temperature gradient is 1663.0 °C/m. The maximum heat generation is 43.0 kJ, while the maximum heat production rate is 6.8 kW. The maximum heat release rate (HRR) is 17.4 kW/m2. The maximum total heat release (THR) is 1975.0 kJ/m2. The maximum mass loss is 190.0 g. Considering the different SOC influences on the TR behavior parameters of cells, it can be concluded that the mentioned parameters increase with the SOC increase. The research findings provide a data basis for the thermal safety design of cells and have theoretical reference significance for the thermal safety design and passive safety protection strategies of electric vehicles and energy storage power stations.
