Abstract:As information technology has been enabling services, the modern service industry, a cornerstone of the global economy, has driven development of the era of the service economy. According to the World Bank, since the 21 st century, the service sector's share of global GDP has consistently been between 61% and 65%. “Everything as a service” has become a phenomenon in human society. Education on service science and engineering has been developed to cultivate more young people for the emerging service industry and service society.

Abstract:Since it was proposed in 2003, service science has become a keen topic in the communities of web services, semantic web, and e-businesses. According to a recent proposal by IBM, it covers service science, service management, and service engineering (SSME). Although there have been many discussions and reports on this topic, it is still quite unclear these debates would contribute to the establishment of service science as a research subject. This chapter intends to address this issue by comparing related studies on service science or SSME, discussing interrelationships among the components of service science (SSME), outlining its evolutionary process in terms of the enterprise modeling approach, and illustrating a number of possible research subtopics.

Abstract:Emerging paradigm of cloud computing provides a new service delivery platform. One of the latest challenges is how to work with service computing in a cloud computing environment. Meanwhile, the convergence of service computing and cloud computing is becoming a major driving force for the adoption of both of these technologies. It has been great advances in formal methods research via tool support and industrial best practice, and their role in a variety of industries, domains, and in certification and assurance. Also, formal methods can play a fundamental and important role in service computing and cloud computing. The topic of FM-S&C 2014 is the theory aspect of data intensive services. There is no doubt in the industry and research community that the importance of data intensive computing has been raising and will continue to be the foremost fields of research. As a result, the data intensive services have become the important type of Web service. Also, it has become a hot issue in the academia and industry. Potentially, this could have a significant impact on the on-going researches for services and data intensive computing. The scope of the FM-S&C workshop series is not limited to technological aspects. In fact, there is a strong tradition of attracting submissions on formal approaches to enterprise systems modeling in general, and business process modeling in particular. Potentially, this might have a significant and lasting impact on the ongoing standardization efforts in cloud computing technologies. All papers accepted by the workshop are included in the proceedings of the IEEE 10th World Congress on Services (SERVICES 2014) which will be published by IEEE Computer Society. Abstract:As research and development in Web Services and Services Computing has only existed for approximately a decade and half, it is remarkably that it has lead to a multi-billion dollar services industry. The first major research conference on the subject, the International Conference on Web Services, just started in 2003. Research in services computing is active and multifaceted. This special issue of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing considers two areas in services computing that have experienced "Recent Advances in Web Services Research": Security, Privacy, and Trust; and New Approaches to Services Composition. It consists of the best extended papers from the two premier research conferences on services computing: the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Web Services and the 2016 IEEE Conference on Services Computing.

Abstract:As the world increasingly becomes characterized by the provision of services to customers, service research faces many challenges and needs a new vision. Many of these challenges stem from the fact that technologies are continually experiencing dramatic change, and savvy customers are increasingly demanding more qualified services. Although research and experiential findings on services in many disciplines have achieved impressive results, systematic research on modern services systems is rarely considered. Aiming at services systems (not only services themselves), this paper discusses the contributions and the potentials for the field of systems theory for Services Science, Management and Engineering (SSME). Thus, SSME can provide suitable referential clues for discussing impacts of systems theory on services research, and systemic thinking can be applied to discuss key issues in SSME. Providing basic definitions of services and services systems, this paper elaborates on the research objects and methodologies of SSME from systems perspective, and proposes that systems theory can be applied as the foundations of services engineering. This paper further sheds light on systemic issues in services science and engineering, services operations, and services systems management. It also provides a summary of relevant theories and tools applied to services systems at the systems level. Finally, some potential prospects in SSME research are presented to meet research demands and practical challenges.
