Abstract:The concept of complex dynamic systems arises in many varieties, including the areas of energy generation, storage and distribution, ecosystems, gene regulation and health delivery, safety and security systems, telecommunications, transportation networks, and the rapidly emerging research topics seeking to understand and analyse. Such systems are often concurrent and distributed, because they have to react to various kinds of events, signals, and conditions. They may be characterized by a system with uncertainties, time delays, stochastic perturbations, hybrid dynamics, distributed dynamics, chaotic dynamics, and a large number of algebraic loops. This special issue provides a platform for researchers to report their recent results on various mathematical methods and techniques for modelling and control of complex dynamic systems and identifying critical issues and challenges for future investigation in this field. This special issue amazingly attracted one-hundred-and eighteen submissions, and twenty-eight of them are selected through a rigorous review procedure.
Algebraic Analysis on Asymptotic Stability of Continuous Dynamical Systems

Abstract:In this paper we propose a mechanisable technique for asymptotic stability analysis of continuous dynamical systems. We start from linearizing a continuous dynamical system, solving the Lyapunov matrix equation and then check whether the solution is positive definite. For the cases that the Jacobian matrix is not a Hurwitz matrix, we first derive an algebraizable sufficient condition for the existence of a Lyapunov function in quadratic form without linearization. Then, we apply a real root classification based method step by step to formulate this derived condition as a semi-algebraic set such that the semi-algebraic set only involves the coefficients of the pre-assumed quadratic form. Finally, we compute a sample point in the resulting semi-algebraic set for the coefficients resulting in a Lyapunov function. In this way, we avoid the use of generic quantifier elimination techniques for efficient computation. We prototypically implemented our algorithm based on DISCOVERER. The experimental results and comparisons demonstrate the feasibility and promise of our approach.

Abstract:Nowadays, practical dynamic systems have become more and more complex, which may be characterized by a model subjected to environmental uncertainties, communication time delays, stochastic perturbations, hybrid dynamics, distributed dynamics, chaotic dynamics, collective behaviours, and so forth [1, 2]. As a result, modeling and control of a complex system either from the viewpoint of mathematical theoretical methods or the view of real-time application point have been an interesting but challenging research topic. This is the third-year special issue from which one may see some recent research progresses in this research field. The special issue received 63 submissions, and 6 papers are selected after a peer-review procedure, indicating an acceptance rate of less than 10%.

Abstract:The distribution of purely imaginary eigenvalues and stabilities of generally singular or neutral differential dynamical systems with multidelays are discussed. Choosing delays as parameters, firstly with commensurate case, we find new algebraic criteria to determine the distribution of purely imaginary eigenvalues by using matrix pencil, linear operator, matrix polynomial eigenvalues problem, and the Kronecker product. Additionally, we get practical checkable conditions to verdict the asymptotic stability and Hopf bifurcation of differential dynamical systems. At last, with more general case, the incommensurate, we mainly study critical delays when the system appears purely imaginary eigenvalue.

The algorithm is based on the exact solution of the first order system of differential equations which appears in corresponding dynamical system. The domain of the algorithm are matrices whose elements are integers, rational numbers as well as one-variable or multiple-variable rational or polynomial expressions.

Abstract:Based on the general definition of hybrid systems, the hybrid system whose subsystems are described of not pure ordinary differential equation (ODE) but differential algebraic equation (DAE) is defined as differential algebraic hybrid system (DAHS). After the general form of DAHS provided, the stability theory framework of DAHS is presented. The stable and asymptotical stable results are educed using multiple Lyapunov functions (MLF). Via the abstract of power system, it is pointed out that power system is a typical hybrid system. In the end, the simulation results show that the stability theory results of DAHS, put forward in the paper, can be successfully used in the analysis of voltage stability.

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of computing Lyapunov functions for asymptotic stability analysis of autonomous polynomial systems of differential equations. We propose a new semi-algebraic approach bymaking advantage of the local property of the Lyapunov function as well as its derivative. This is done by first constructing a semi-algebraic system and then solving this semi-algebraic system in an adaptive way. Experiment results show that our semi-algebraic approach is more efficient in practice, especially for low-order systems. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We establish some algebraic results on the zeros of some exponential polynomials and a real coefficient polynomial. Based on the basic theorem, we develop a decomposition technique to investigate the stability of two coupled systems and their discrete versions, that is, to find conditions under which all zeros of the exponential polynomials have negative real parts and the moduli of all roots of a real coefficient polynomial are less than 1.

Abstract:Several concepts on the measure of observability, reachability, and robustness are defined and illustrated for both linear and nonlinear control systems. Defined by using computational dynamic optimization, these concepts are applicable to a wide spectrum of problems. Some questions addressed include the observability based on user-information, the determination of strong observability vs. weak observability, partial observability of complex systems, the computation of $L^2$-gain for nonlinear control systems, and the measure of reachability in the presence of state constraints. Examples on dynamic systems defined by both ordinary and partial differential equations are shown.

Abstract:We introduce an algebraic analogue of dynamical systems, based on term rewriting. We show that a recursive function applied to the output of an iterated rewriting system defines a formal class of models into which all the main architectures for dynamic machine learning models (including recurrent neural networks, graph neural networks, and diffusion models) can be embedded. Considered in category theory, we also show that these algebraic models are a natural language for describing the compositionality of dynamic models. Furthermore, we propose that these models provide a template for the generalisation of the above dynamic models to learning problems on structured or non-numerical data, including 'hybrid symbolic-numeric' models.

Abstract:Theoretical analysis of nonlinear dynamics and its applications in engineering pioneers the major research issues in nonlinear science. It has significant values in both theory and applications to do innovative research and to reveal the essential features and mechanism of dynamic processes of complex systems utilizing the theory of nonlinear dynamics. The results and achievements in nonlinear dynamics will be widely used in science and engineering. This paper is an attempt to categorize recent research achievements in fundamental theory of nonlinear dynamics and its applications in mechanical systems. In aspect of theoretical research, the major issues concerned are the Chen-Longford method that reveals the important relation between the periodic bifurcation solutions of nonlinear dynamical systems and the structural parameters of the system, universal classification of high co-dimension bifurcations, universal unfolding of high co-dimension unsymmetrical bifurcations, classification of constraint bifurcations, the direct method for calculating the normal form of nonlinear autonomous systems, the complex inner product averaging method for calculating the normal form of nonlinear non-autonomous systems, and the order reduction methods for high dimensional systems. In aspect of applications, the major topics concerned are the instability mechanism, bifurcation solutions, chaotic motions, fault diagnosis and its synthetic control techniques of the nonlinear rotor dynamical systems for large-scale rotating machinery; the stability, Hopf bifurcation, subharmonic bifurcations, co-dimension 2 bifurcation, and chaotic motions of impact-vibrating systems; and the dynamic design strategy and nonlinear vibrations of large-scale resonant screens.
