Abstract:Building on our previous work, we give a thorough presentation of the techniques developed for synchronizing dynamical systems in the special case of synchronizing shift spaces. Following work of Thomsen, we give a construction of the homoclinic, the heteroclinic, and synchronizing heteroclinic $C^\ast$-algebras along with the synchronizing ideal of a shift space in terms of Bratteli diagrams. The algebras introduced in our previous work (the synchronizing ideal, and synchronizing heteroclinic algebra) are discussed in detail. In the sofic shift case, these algebras are shown to be related to the $C^\ast$-algebras of its minimal left and minimal right presentations. Several specific examples are discussed to demonstrate these techniques. For the even shift we give a complete computation of all the associated invariants. We discuss these algebras for a sofic shift that is not of almost finite type and for a number of strictly non-sofic synchronizing shifts. In particular we discuss the rank of the $K$-theory of the homoclinic algebra of a shift space and its synchronizing ideal and its implications. We also give a construction for producing from any minimal shift a synchronizing shift whose set of non-synchronizing points is exactly the original minimal shift.

Abstract:We show that the stable C*-algebra and the related Ruelle algebra defined by L Putnam from the irreducible Smale space associated with a topologically mixing expanding map of a compact metric space are strongly Morita equivalent to the groupoid C*-algebras defined directly from the expanding map by C. Anantharaman-Delaroche and V. Deaconu. As an application, we calculate the K*-group of the Ruelle algebra for a solenoid.

Abstract:The synchronization between two dynamical systems is one of the most appealing phenomena occurring in Nature. Already observed by Huygens in the case of two pendula, it is a current area of research in the case of chaotic systems, with numerous applications in Physics, Biology or Engineering. We present an elementary but detailed exploration of the theory behind this phenomenon, including some graphical animations, with the aid of the free CAS Maxima, but the code can be easily ported to other CASs. The examples used are the Lorentz attractor and a pair of coupled pendula because these are well-known models of dynamical systems, but the procedures are applicable to any system described by a system of first-order differential equations.

Abstract:In this article, we aim to investigate the synchronization problem of dynamical systems, which can be of generic linear or Lipschitz nonlinear type, communicating over directed switching network topologies. A mild connectivity assumption on the switching topologies is imposed, which allows them to be directed and jointly connected. We propose a novel analysis framework from both algebraic and geometric perspectives to justify the attractiveness of the synchronization manifold. Specifically, it is proven that the complementary space of the synchronization manifold can be spanned by certain subspaces constructed from the network structure. This allows to project the states of the dynamical systems onto these subspaces and transform the synchronization problem under consideration equivalently into a convergence one of the projected states in each subspace. Then, assuming the joint connectivity condition on the communication topologies, we are able to work out a unified convergence analysis for both types of dynamical systems. More specifically, for partial-state coupled generic linear systems, it is proven that synchronization can be reached if an extra condition, which is easy to verify in several cases, on the system dynamics is satisfied. For Lipschitz nonlinear systems with positive-definite inner coupling matrix, synchronization is realized if the coupling strength is strong enough to stabilize the evolution of the projected states in each subspace under certain conditions. The above claims generalize the existing results concerning both types of dynamical systems to so far the most general framework. Some illustrative examples are provided to verify our theoretical findings.

Abstract:We study complete synchronization of the complex dynamical networks described by linearly coupled ordinary differential equation systems (LCODEs). Here, the coupling is timevarying in both network structure and reaction dynamics. Inspired by our previous paper (Lu et al. (2007-2008)), the extended Hajnal diameter is introduced and used to measure the synchronization in a general differential system. Then we find that the Hajnal diameter of the linear system induced by the time-varying coupling matrix and the largest Lyapunov exponent of the synchronized system play the key roles in synchronization analysis of LCODEs with identity inner coupling matrix. As an application, we obtain a general sufficient condition guaranteeing directed time-varying graph to reach consensus. Example with numerical simulation is provided to show the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:We continue the study of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a C$^\ast$-dynamical system, initiated by Bédos and Conti, and recently extended by Buss, Kwaśniewski, McKee and Skalski. Firstly, we introduce and study a natural notion of a Fourier algebra of a C$^\ast$-dynamical system. Notably, we show that it can be equivalently defined as the closure of the multipliers with finite support or as the closure of multipliers coming from regular equivariant representations. Secondly, we undertake an analysis of the equivariant representation theory of commutative systems. Our main result about this is a description of the group theoretical aspect of the equivariant representation theory in terms of cocycle representations of the underlying transformation group.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss partial synchronization of linearly and symmetrically coupled ordinary differential equations (LSCODEs). The synchronization phenomena are investigated via invariant synchronization manifolds. On the basis of geometrical analysis of the synchronization manifold, several criteria for the global attractivity of the invariant synchronization manifold are obtained. Combining these criteria with some numerical examples, we investigate how topological structure affects partial synchronization, and give a valuable discussion about the possibility of partial synchronization with increasing coupling strength.

Abstract:Robust synchrony in network dynamics is governed by balanced colorings and the corresponding quotient network, also formalized in terms of graph fibrations. Dynamics and bifurcations are constrained — often in surprising ways — by the associated synchrony subspaces, which are invariant under all admissible ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The class of admissible ODEs is determined by a groupoid, whose objects are the input sets of nodes and whose morphisms are input isomorphisms between those sets. We define the coloring subgroupoid corresponding to a coloring, leading to groupoid interpretations of colorings and quotient networks. The first half of the paper is mainly tutorial. The second half, which is new, characterizes the structure of the network groupoid and proves that the groupoid of the quotient network is the quotient of the network groupoid by a normal subgroupoid of transition elements.

Abstract:Concurrent synchronization is a regime where diverse groups of fully synchronized dynamic systems stably coexist. We study global exponential synchronization and concurrent synchronization in the context of Lagrangian systems control. In a network constructed by adding diffusive couplings to robot manipulators or mobile robots, a decentralized tracking control law globally exponentially synchronizes an arbitrary number of robots, and represents a generalization of the average consensus problem. Exact nonlinear stability guarantees and synchronization conditions are derived by contraction analysis. The proposed decentralized strategy is further extended to adaptive synchronization and partial-state coupling.

Abstract:We study homological invariants of étale groupoids arising from Smale spaces, continuing on our previous work, but going beyond the stably disconnected case by incorporating resolutions in the space direction. We show that the homology groups defined by Putnam are isomorphic to the Crainic-Moerdijk groupoid homology with integer coefficients. We also show that the K-groups of C*-algebras of stable and unstable equivalence relations have finite rank. For unstably disconnected Smale spaces, we provide a cohomological spectral sequence whose second page is the (stable) homology groups, and converges to the K-groups of the unstable C*-algebra.

Abstract:The universal C*-algebras of discrete product systems generalize the Toeplitz- Cuntz algebras and the Toeplitz algebras of discrete semigroups. We consider a semigroup P which is quasi-lattice ordered in the sense of Nica, and, for a product system p:E\to P, we study those representations of E, called covariant, which respect the lattice structure of P. We identify a class of product systems, which we call compactly aligned, for which there is a purely C*-algebraic characterization of covariance, and study the algebra C*_{cov}(P,E) which is universal for covariant representations of E. Our main theorem is a characterization of the faithful representations of C*_{cov}(P,E) when P is the positive cone of a free product of totally-ordered amenable groups.

Abstract:We give an introduction to the "stable algebra of matrices" as related to certain problems in symbolic dynamics. We consider this stable algebra (especially, shift equivalence and strong shift equivalence) for matrices over general rings as well as various specific rings. This algebra is of independent interest and can be followed with little attention to the symbolic dynamics. We include strong connectionsto algebraic K-theory and the inverse spectral problem for nonnegative matrices. We also review key features of the automorphism group of a shift of finite type, and the work of Kim, Roush and Wagoner giving counterexamples to Williams' Shift Equivalence Conjecture.

Abstract:A binding group theorem is proved in the context of quantifier-free internality to the fixed field in difference-closed fields of characteristic zero. This is articulated as a statement about the birational geometry of isotrivial algebraic dynamical systems, and more generally isotrivial $\sigma$-varieties. It asserts that if $(V,\phi)$ is an isotrivial $\sigma$-variety then a certain subgroup of the group of birational transformations of $V$, namely those that preserve all the relations between $(V,\phi)$ and the trivial dynamics on the affine line, is in fact an algebraic group. Several application are given including new special cases of the Zariski Dense Orbit Conjecture and the Dixmier-Moeglin Equivalence Problem in algebraic dynamics, as well as finiteness results about the existence of nonconstant invariant rational functions on cartesian powers of $\sigma$-varieties. These applications give algebraic-dynamical analogues of recent results in differential-algebraic geometry.
