Abstract:The inconsistency in the magnitude and phase variations among the receiving array elements in multibeam soundings can seriously affect the beam pattern characteristics, which reduces the array gain, increases the sidelobe level, and deteriorates the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. The accuracy of the beamforming result may be improved by correcting for magnitude and phase variations among the array elements. Therefore, a novel estimation and correction method based on near-field focused beamforming is proposed to overcome deficiencies of the conventional methods. The magnitude and phase variation model and the corresponding influence on the direction-finding accuracy are analyzed. The near-field focused beamforming model is established for multielement systems, and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) method is used to determine the ideal-source incident angle for correction. We construct the receiving signal covariance matrix in the frequency domain and further estimate the magnitude and phase variations in each array element. The performance and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by simulations and small anechoic tank experiments. The proposed method requires the employment of a rotation platform that provides necessary rotation information and, thus, can accurately and effectively estimate and correct for variations in the magnitude and phase response of elements in the receiving array. The experimental results show that the sidelobe level can be reduced by approximately 3 dB after the array is corrected, and the angle deviation is reduced by approximately 1.0 degrees.

Abstract:This paper considers the wireless multicast cell, in which two source nodes with multiple antennas communicate with two destinations over a common medium simultaneously assisted by a multi-antenna relay node. Assume that the sources and relay have individual power constraints. The purpose of this work is to develop an optimal algorithm to compute the source beamforming vectors and the relay beamforming matrix to maximize the system sum-rate, subject to the power constraints in the sources and relay. The problem is nonconvex and apparently has no simple solution. In this paper, We first develop the beamforming vectors at the sources, and then explore the linear beamforming matrix for the nonregenerative relay, Finally, we present a coordinated optimal algorithm to jointly optimize the vectors and matrix, which performance is compared with the conventional methods. Simulations demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms the conventional methods.

Abstract:Since the performance of adaptive beamforming algorithm for coherent signals degrades when the estimation error in the Direction Of Arrival (DOA) of the desired signal is large, a new multistage blocking based beamforming algorithm for coherent interference suppression is proposed. Firstly, the blocking matrix is constructed and the principle of multistage blocking is derived, with which the received signal is processed to remove the desired signal component. Then the mapping between the array manifold of sub-aperture array and the full-aperture array is analyzed when only the desired signal exists in the space. On this basis, the extension transformation is derived with its effectiveness proved in the presence of interference signals. At last, the optimal weight vector of the adaptive beamformer for coherent interference is obtained by extension transformation. Requiring no prior information of the DOA of the interference signals, the new method is robust to the DOA estimation error, and can avoid the loss of array aperture. The effectiveness and superiority of the new algorithm are verified by simulation analysis.

Abstract:This paper considers the benefit of joint beamforming across multiple cells in a MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system, where multiple base-stations may jointly optimize their respective beamformers to improve the overall system performance. This paper focuses on the criteria of minimizing the total weighted transmitted power across the base-stations subject to signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) constraints at the remote users. The proposed algorithm is based on uplink-downlink duality to the multicell setting. Simulations reveal that our algorithm provides appreciable performance improvements as compared to the conventional per-cell optimized one.

Abstract:Recently, Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) transmission/Reception technology is introduced into the fourth-generation cellular mobile communication system. Time-division duplex (TDD) system is more suitable to apply CoMP when joint processing is needed because it can easily get the channel information through channel reciprocity. Actually, a crucial point to realise channel reciprocity is the antenna calibration, especially in the inter-base station (BS) case. Self-antenna calibration within the BS in the conventional system has been studied in previous works. In this paper, the authors investigate the impact of un-calibrated antennas of BSs and mobile stations (MSs) on the precoding matrix of two precoding techniques [block diagonal (BD) and zero forcing (ZF)] in the CoMP system. A theoretical model is set and analysed. The discussion of some properties gives a complete overview of the calibration problem in the CoMP system. In addition, the authors propose a practical scheme to solve inter-BS antenna calibration problem. System simulation results, which validate their analysis, are presented to show the necessity of antenna calibration.
