Abstract:This contribution proposes a design method for training sequence (TS) defined as frequency-shift m-sequence (FSMS) and a novel transmit diversity scheme with FSMS padding as guard interval (GI) for the further evolution of time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) systems. The good auto-correlation characteristic of FSMS can facilitate synchronization and channel estimation at the receiver. Due to the cross-correlation characteristics of FSMSs, the accuracy of channel estimation is affected by the mutual interference among the transmit antennas. To further improve the accuracy of channel estimation, the channel impulse response (CIR) should be estimated in an iterative manner to suppress the effects of the mutual interference and additive white Gaussian noise. Compared with the transmit diversity schemes based on the space-frequency coded TS and space-time coded TS for TDS-OFDM system, the proposed transmit diversity scheme with FSMS padding can provide diversity gain and superior system performance over time-varying and/or frequency-selective propagation conditions.

Abstract:Conventional OFDM transmission system uses a fixed-length Cyclic Prefix to counteract Inter-Symbol Interferences (ISI) caused by channel delay spreading under wireless mobile environment. This may cause considerable performance deterioration when the CP length is less than the channel RMS delay spread, or may decrease the system power and spectrum efficiency when it is much larger. A novel Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme is proposed in this paper to adapt the CP length to the variation of channel delay spread. AOFDM-VCPL utilizes the preamble or pilot sub-carriers of each OFDM packet to estimate the channel RMS delay spread; and then uses a criterion to calculate the CP length, which finally affects the OFDM transmitter. As illustrated in the simulation section, by deploying this scheme in a typical wireless environment, the system can transmit at data rate 11.5 Mb/s higher than conventional non-adaptive system while gaining a 0.65 dB power saving at the same BER performance.

Abstract:When adopting transmit diversity in Time Domain Synchronous Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (TDS-OFDM) system, the pseudo noise (PN) sequence from different transmit antennas will interfere with each other, so the receiver can't estimate the channel impulse response (CIR) correctly. In this paper, two frame structures with different PN sequence designs for transmit diversity are proposed. One scheme takes PN sequence and zero sequence as frame header alternatively, and the other scheme designs a pair of orthogonal PN sequence based on space-time technique. Based on the proposed schemes, the corresponding iterative channel estimation method is also addressed. Analysis and simulations show that the proposed scheme can achieve good channel estimation and greatly improve the system performance.

Abstract:In order to improve the system performance over wireless fading channel, transmit diversity technique has been proven as an attractive and effective solution especially for broadcasting systems. In this paper, a PN sequence design scheme based on both cyclic-shift m-sequences and space-time block coded (STBC) m-sequences for time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) system with transmit diversity is proposed. Based on this novel design, flexible channel estimation which provides a trade-off between maximum delay spread and maximum Doppler spread over double-selective channel is investigated and a radix-2 fast Fourier transform (FFT) approach is adopted for implementation from the viewpoint of computational complexity Simulations show that the performance of the proposed transmit diversity scheme is better than conventional one and perform well under different propagation conditions.

Abstract:The Chinese digital terrestrial/television multimedia broadcasting (DTMB) standard adopts time-domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) as the modulation technology. TDS-OFDM system uses time domain PN sequences as frame header and thus has to employ square root raised cosine (SRRC) filters to perform spectrum shaping. In order to ensure synchronization performance, the system needs oversampling and symbol timing recovery (STR), which is sensitive to sampling position offset and increases the implementation complexity. In this paper, a novel transmission scheme utilizing virtual subcarrier is proposed to mitigate this problem. The proposed system does not require oversampling and SRRC filters. Compared with the conventional TDS-OFDM system, simulation results prove that the proposed scheme has better performance in presence of sampling position offset in various multipath channels.

Abstract:The state-of-the-art time domain synchronous OFDM (TDS-OFDM) transmit diversity schemes are only suitable either for fast time-varying but weakly frequency-selective channels, or deeply frequency-selective but slowly time-varying channels. In this paper, a novel TDS-OFDM transmit diversity scheme based on the space-time shifted constant amplitude zero autocorrelation (CAZAC) sequence is proposed over doubly selective broadcasting channels. The space-shifted CAZAC sequence is used for the unbiased maximum likelihood (ML) channel estimation. The time-shifted sequence is utilized for the low-complexity cyclicity reconstruction of the received inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) block. Compared with the existing solutions, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of about 2.5 dB can be achieved by the proposed scheme at the uncoded bit error rate (BER) of 10(-2) over the deeply frequency-selective single frequency network (SFN) broadcasting channel when the receiver velocity is 140 km/h, at the cost of the spectral efficiency penalty of about 2.88%.

Abstract:Time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) modulation scheme offers higher spectrum efficiency than that by cyclic prefix (CP) OFDM technique, but at the same time it increases computational complexity on the receiver side. And under time-varying channel conditions, residual inter-symbol-interference (ISI) due to imperfect channel estimation causes performance loss. Dual PN-sequence padding (DPNP) was later proposed to simplify equalization and to improve mobile reception at the cost of spectrum efficiency decrease. In this paper, an improved TDS-OFDM modulation scheme, shifted sequence padding (SSP), is proposed. Keeping low computational complexity provided by DPNP, it increases spectrum efficiency up to 8%, and offers more flexibility for receivers to adjust channel estimation approach according to channel conditions and complexity requirements. And it could be extended to support flexible physical frame structure.

Abstract:Targeting to the DFM system, which is a digital version of FM and used in the VHF-FM band, the paper proposes a scheme of multimode OFDM-parameters design. The design can not only counteract the multi-path delay and Doppler shift of the DRM-Plus-related wireless channel, but also reduce the implementation complexity. The new diversity techniques CDD help to solve the flat fading problem. Simulations on various channel profiles indicate that the proposed scheme is a power and bandwidth efficient scheme and CDD is an efficient transmit diversity scheme to cover the flat fading.

Abstract:Transmit diversity is especially important in broadcasting network. In this paper, a transmit diversity method is proposed for the Chinese National Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) Standard. The transmit diversity scheme is based on the design of orthogonal sequences which have perfect crosscorrelation and almost perfect autocorrelation characteristic. The characteristics of the proposed sequences can help for synchronization and channel estimation in time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) system. Simulations using space-time codes (STCs) in Digital Terrestrial/Television Multimedia Broadcasting (DTMB) system with low density parity check coding (LDPC) show that the proposed transmit diversity method has about 1-2 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain comparing with no diversity for QPSK and 16 QAM constellations at BER = 10(-4), and it can avoid the appearance of BER floor for 64QAM constellation.

Abstract:By adopting the pseudo-random noise (PN) sequences as the guard interval (GI) as well as the training sequence, time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) outperforms the conventional OFDM using the cyclic prefix (CP) in the spectral efficiency at the cost of the iterative padding subtraction (IPS) in channel estimation (CE). To avoid the high computational complexity of the IPS, an improved frequency domain CE scheme based on a newly designed frame structure is proposed. To further improve the CE accuracy, the time domain training sequences, which are frequency binary (FB) after the fast Fourier transform (FFT), are flexibly padded as the frame header instead of the PN sequences. Theoretical analyses and computer simulations show that the proposed scheme can improve the system performance under the time frequency doubly selective channels, even in the presence of large channel delays in the single frequency networks.
