What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the issues of high cost and poor stability of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in fuel cells. Specifically, the researchers developed a series of FeCo nanoalloy composites embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes and nanosheets (Fe_xCo_y-N-C) to enhance ORR catalytic performance. By adjusting the ratio of initial Fe3+/Co2+ ions, different compositions of FeCo bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared, and these composites were synthesized through a one-step carbonization process. The study shows that these materials exhibit excellent ORR performance in alkaline media, with the optimized Fe_1Co_3-N-C and Fe_3Co_1-N-C catalysts demonstrating higher activity and stability compared to commercial Pt/C catalysts. The main contribution of the paper lies in exploring the potential of non-precious metal-based catalysts in improving ORR performance, particularly through the synergistic effect between Fe and Co, and the role of different types of active sites in nitrogen-doped carbon materials (such as Co-N_x, pyridinic nitrogen, and graphitic nitrogen) in enhancing electrocatalytic performance. This provides new insights and methods for developing low-cost, high-performance fuel cell catalysts.
