Abstract:This paper studies the evolution of China's production and trade patterns during its integration into the global economy. We document and explain new facts concerning changes in production and exports at the industry and firm levels using microdata and a quantitative Ricardian and Heckscher–Ohlin model with heterogeneous firms. Counterfactual simulations reveal that capital deepening made China's production and exports more capital-intensive, although labor-biased productivity growth acted as a counterforce. Consistent with the data, our model demonstrates that China's trade openness peaked around the mid-2000s and fell until the 2020s, while the world's exposure to Chinese exports rose continuously.Institutional subscribers to the NBER working paper series, and residents of developing countries may download this paper without additional charge at www.nber.org.

Abstract:As the world's factory, China has enjoyed huge economic benefits from international export but also suffered severe environmental consequences. Most studies investigating unequal environmental exchange associated with trade took China as a homogeneous entity ignoring considerable inequality and outsourcing of pollution within China. This paper traces the regional mismatch of export-induced economic benefits and environmental costs along national supply chains by using the latest multiregional input-output model and emission inventory for 2012. The results indicate that approximately 56% of the national GDP induced by exports has been received by developed coastal regions, while about 72% of air pollution embodied in national exports, measured as aggregated atmospheric pollutant equivalents (APE), has been mainly incurred by less developed central and western regions. For each yuan of export-induced GDP, developed regions only incurred 0.4-0.6 g APE emissions, whereas less developed regions from western or central China had to suffer 4-8 times the amount of emissions. This is due to poorer regions providing lower value added and higher emission-intensive inputs and having lower environmental standards and less efficient technologies. Our results may pave a way to mitigate the unequal relationship between developed and less developed regions from the perspective of environment-economy nexus.

Evolvement of Export Structure and Transformation of Trade Development Mode in China

Abstract:This paper analyses the evolvement of Chinese export structure and transformation of trade development mode during 1978 to 2007 from different views. The results show that Chinese export has been growing rapidly, its structure has been optimizing, and its trade development mode has been transforming. The proportion of processing trade is of absolute superiority in trade develop- ment, but it shows the downward trend in recent years. It has gradually formed a good race setup in the general trade, processing trade and other trade.
Research on Evolution of Technology Content of Chinese Export： Empirical Study Based on Data of 50 Countries＇ Metalwork Export from 1993 to 2006

Abstract:Based on 200 thousand group data, this paper takes advantage of revised Finger ＆ Kreinin＇ s model to estimate the metalwork export similarity between China and other 49 countries from 1993 to 2006, so as to show the evolution of the technology content of Chinese metalwork. Moreover it uses fixed effect panel data model with GLS to analysis the mechanism of Chinese met- alwork＇ s evolution of the technology content. The results show： Firstly, the technology content of Chinese metalwork has been increased dominantly, and become more similar to developed countries; Secondly, increase in export is the main spur to the increase of export similarity between China and developed countries, price ascending speed exceeding China lead to the increase in export dissimilarity between China and developing countries; Thirdly, self-innovation ability in Chinese metalwork industry is very weak, the increase in the technology content are mainly rely on ＂external power＂ .

Abstract:Carbon embodied in international trade of China in 1997-2006 is accounted by input-output method.An optimistic estimation and a conservative estimation are made respectively.The conservative one applies carbon intensity coefficient of China to estimate embodied carbon of imports.It revealed that China was an carbon export nation of in 1997-2006.In 1997-2004,the net carbon export accounted for about 0.5%～2.7% of total carbon emissions of that year.After 2004,the proportion is increased rapidly.It reacheed to 10% in 2006.The optimistic one applies carbon intensity coefficient of Japan to estimate embodied carbon of imports.It revealed that China exported more carbons in 1997-2006.In 1997-2002,the net carbon export accounted for about 12%～14% of total carbon emissions of that year.After 2002,the proportion increased rapidly.It reached to 29.28% in 2006.As producers and consumers,China and nations that import from China gain much benefits from carbon emissions.They both should be responsible for climate change.

Abstract:Energy embodied in international trade in China in 1997-2006 was accounted by input-output method.Taking embodied energy and actual energy into account,an optimistic estimation and a conservative estimation are made.The optimistic estimation revealed: China was a net energy export nation in 1997-2006. The net energy export are between 100 and 500 millions tons standard coal every year.In 1997-2002,the net energy export accounted for about 10% of total energy consumption of that year.After 2002,the proportion increased rapidly.It reached to 18.8% in 2006.The conservative estimation revealed: in 1999-2005,China had a little import of energy and in 1997,1998 and 2006,China had a little export of energy.The import of energy was in equilibrium with the export of energy.Both the optimistic estimation and conservative estimation revealed: the net export of embodied energy increased rapidly,which was consistent with the rapid increase of import of actual energy.The increase of export of commodities was an important factor resulting in the increase of China's energy use.

Abstract:This paper exhibits the historical evolution of the balance sheet in the People's Republic of China. In particular, we examine three major changes in the balance sheet (which reports the financial position of an economic or business entity) since the founding of the new China in 1949 and the political, social and economic changes during this period. The content, structure and presentation of the balance sheet (or alternative forms of the statement in use) are illustrated. The political and economic factors driving its evolution are analyzed to assist readers in understanding the rapid changes in Chinese accounting over the last six decades. The implications of the Chinese experience for international accounting convergence are also briefly outlined.
China’s Firm-Level Processing Trade: Trends, Characteristics, and Productivity

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive overview of China’s processing trade using highly disaggregated 2010 transaction-level data. By highlighting the key role of processing trade in China’s foreign trade, we argue that various free-trade zones have served as important instruments in boosting processing trade. We then explore various characteristics of processing imports from both industry-level and firm-level perspectives: origin countries of imports, main products, transport modes, entry ports, consumption destinations, quality of commodities, and scope of processing trade. A careful estimation of firm-level total factor productivity using the Olley–Pakes approach suggests that processing firms are less productive than non-processing firms. We also contribute to the literature by offering an efficient way of matching firm-level production data with transaction-level trade data, a rather challenging task due to data format restrictions.
Microeconomic Analysis of the Mystery of China’s Trade Volume Growth: 1978-2007

Abstract:The "gravity equation" is usually adopted by international trade researchers in explaining the growth of a country’s import and export trade volume of goods, especially manufactured goods. But in the case of China, variables in this model such as exchange rate, tariff, cost of transportation, and spatial distance are not sufficient to explain the mystery of China’s trade volume growth. In reality, this growth of China’s trade volume is owing to disintegration of production in the process of economic globalization, MNCs’ vertical outsourcing of their manufacturing processes and procedures, and the timely readjustment of Chinese enterprises and their strategy of participating in international intra-product specialization. In this paper we establish an equilibrium model of intra-product specialization dominated by MNCs, and perform some empirical tests of China’s trade volume growth using variables including technological conditions of trade, extent of similarity of economies, policy conditions of trade, extent of disintegration of production and level of per capita capital equipment; the empirical results support our basic conclusions.
A Trade Tale of Two Countries: China and India

Abstract:The paper first analyzes the pattern of trade for China and India in the new century. We find that: (1) Both countries have high openness ratios that positively associated with their growing labor productivity over years. (2) China’s world export share keeps increasing whereas India maintains a stable but relatively small world exporting share in the new century. (3) Both countries exhibit a large extent to intra-industry trade though both export a large proportion of heavy-industry manufacturing products. (4) China exports more complicated and sophisticated products than India, though the gap is narrowing down over years. (4) India exports a significant share of high-technology products, though such a proportion is much smaller than that of China, when taking processing trade into account. (5) Processing trade plays a dominant role for China’s exports whereas it is relatively unimportant for India. We then seek for different policy settings in the two countries to interpret such similarity and differences. We conclude that the key reason for different trade performance in the two countries is the late adoption of the outward-promotion policy of India compared to that of China. To illustrate this point, we provide a careful scrutiny by the setup of special economic zones, by the access of the GATT/WTO, by the evolution of tariff reductions, and even by trade facilitation in the two countries.
The Evolution of Spatial Pattern of China's Exports

Abstract:Based on two-digit export data of China Customs Database from 2000 to 2011,this paper studies the evolution of the geographical pattern of China's exports.The results show that China's export firms have a high degree of spatial agglomeration,mainly concentrating in the coastal areas.However,most exports' spatial Gini coefficient decreased from 2000 to 2006,and the space Gini coefficient of the raw material exports decreased greatly,followed by labor-intensive exports,and some of the technology-intensive exports' Gini coefficient declined little or even slightly increased.At the urban scale,spatial diffusion dominated the spatial restructure.From 2000 to 2006,the raw materials exports shifted from the central and western cities to the coastal cities and labor-intensive exports transferred from the core to the periphery cities of urban agglomeration in the coastal area.During the same period,technology-intensive exports were mainly concentrated in a small number of eore cities in urban agglomeration in coastal areas and they mainly relocated from the core cites in Pearl River Delta to the core cities in Yangtze River Delta.From 2007 to 2011,the technology-intensive exports spread from the core cities to the peripheral cities in urban agglomerations in coastal areas and the proportion for capital cities in the central and western regions improved significantly.Finally,the production of China's exports was mainly concentrated in urban agglomerations in eastern area and the capital cities in middle and western areas.Through the econometric models,it is found that new trade theory and new economic geography theory have a better explanation on location choice and spatial distribution of export firms.The larger the size of local market,the more possibility that export firms with increasing returns to scale tend to locate in this area.Except for the market size,the growth of laborintensive export firms in middle and western area is also affected by the labor endowments.Areas with better human capital tend to have higher wages,which will squeeze our export enterprises.Local governments' zones policies and investment policies tend to promote export growth,especially the technology-intensive products.But the heavy taxes imposed on exports enterprises will hinder the development of export enterprises.

Abstract:Based on the two data sources of international trade and China′s industry pollution emissions,this paper performes a growth decomposition exercises where the change in China′s manufacturing emissions is decomposed into scale,composition and technique effects.The paper shows that although China keeps competitive advantage on some pollution-intensity industries,under new international labor division,the structure of export and import have become more concentrated in cleaner industries.While international activity has increased drastically,manufacturing emissions were decreasing,it thanks to the adoption of cleaner production techniques and a small shift towards cleaner industries.
Export and Economic Growth in China: A Demand-Oriented Analysis

Abstract:Many studies, based on the accounting identify of gross domestic product (GDP), found that the contribution of foreign trade to China's economic growth over the past 20 years was very small. In this paper, we re-examine the issue and find that those studies underestimate the contribution of exports to GDP growth by overlooking the indirect impacts of exports on domestic consumption, investment, government expenditures and imports. We propose a new estimation method and find that a ten percent increase in exports resulted in a one percent increase in GDP in the 1990s in China, when both direct and indirect contributions are considered.

Abstract:We develop a quantitative framework for decomposing trade patterns. We derive price indexes that determine comparative advantage and the aggregate cost of living. If firms and products are imperfect substitutes, we show that these price indexes depend on variety, average appeal (including quality), and the dispersion of appeal-adjusted prices. We show that they are only weakly related to standard empirical measures of average prices. We find that 40 percent of the cross-section variation in comparative advantage, and 90 percent of the time-series variation, is accounted for by variety and average appeal, with less than 10 percent attributed to average prices.

Abstract:Based on revealed comparative advantage indices, the patterns of China's exports are studied empirically at not only national level but also provincial level. The statistic results have demonstrated that China has changed its export strategy to coincide with the law of comparative advantage. However, there is a distinct difference in export patterns between the coastal region and the interior region, which may partly explain the divergence in the growth rate of GDP or income between them. In addition, econometric estimates of export equations provide evidence the real effective exchange rate, comparative advantage strategy as well as domestic supply and foreign demand have theory-expected impacts on export, which also show market force is playing a more important role in China's exports.

Abstract:On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up, China’s economic growth level has steadily risen and its international status has gradually improved. However, as the global economic downturn, China is facing tremendous challenges and pressures in the international economic and financial markets. The turbulence of foreign trade and international financial markets has put forward greater requirements for the flexibility of China’s financial strategy. Based on the annual data of China’s total foreign trade, exchange rate, commodity retail price index and the proportion of tertiary industry from 2002 to 2017, this paper constructs a multiple regression model to analyze the main influencing factors of China’s total foreign trade. The empirical results show that there is a positive relationship between the commodities retail price index and the total foreign trade, a negative relationship between the proportion of tertiary industry and the total foreign trade, and a positive relationship between the exchange rate of RMB (taking US dollar as an example) and the total foreign trade. On the basis of empirical analysis, the paper puts forward suggestions on relevant financial policies.

Abstract:This paper examines the relationship between trade and economic growth based on Chinai¯s national data for the period of 1952 to 1997. It is found that the growth rate of exports, the growth rate of imports, and the growth rate of the volume of trade are positively related to the growth rate of per capita GDP. It is also found that the labor force growth was positively related to economic growth.
