Abstract:This paper investigates the trends and determinants of geographic concentration and industrial specialization in China, using provincial panel data for the period 1999-2010. It is shown that after 2005, both geographic concentration and industrial specialization began to decline, resulting in an increased similarity of industrial structure among provinces. This paper posits that the industrial policies of the provincial governments are the cause of this phenomenon. The result is robust when using instrumental variables to deal with possible reverse causality. The underlying mechanism is that the policy of the central government, which is set to steer the direction of industrial development for several years to come, is an important reference document for all provincial planners. It therefore causes the less developed regions to deviate from their comparative advantages and results in a combination of insufficient geographic concentration and inverse specialization in China.

Abstract:A growing literature on evolutionary economic geography concludes that regional industrial evolution is path-dependent and is determined by the preexisting industries. This study more accurately calculates the industry relatedness based on the co-occurrence approach to portray the production space of China’s manufacturing sectors and then examines the impact of industry relatedness on regional industrial evolution. The findings report that industry relatedness does underscore the regional structural change in China but shows significant regional differences in the evolution path. The coastal region has strong tendency of path dependence in its industrial evolution, while North West and South West break the path-dependent trajectory and transition into high productive sectors distant from their own production network. The results suggest that governmental policies can play a crucial role in creating new paths in the West. Institutions matter to allow the significant role of industry relatedness in driving regional industrial evolution.

Abstract:Evolutionary economic geography (EEG) indicates that regional industrial development is path dependent. The empirical studies in EEG however have not paid sufficient attention to the importance of global linkages nor the role of regional institutions in driving industrial dynamics. Based on firm level data of four-digit manufacturing industries during 1998 to 2008 in China, we find that Chinese regions branch into new industries technologically related to the existing industrial portfolio and related industries are less likely to exit. Further analysis reveals that global linkages, economic liberalization and state involvement not only create favourable conditions to allow a larger role of technological relatedness but also generate opportunities for Chinese regions to create new paths of industrial development.

Abstract:: During the 1980s and 1990s, China's economic transition and institutional change characterized by the triple process of marketization, decentralization, and globalization enabled it to emerge rapidly as a global supplier particularly of the low-end, labor-intensive manufacturing industries, resulting in enormous spatial and temporal variations of the economic landscape. However, since the early 2000s, the "race to the bottom" that typified the "China price" and the model of export- oriented industrialization has been challenged by various factors, which triggered another round of industrial restructuring and produced new economic geographies of production and employment in China. This article provides a review of existing research on the geographical and industrial dynamics of China's manufacturing industry, by paying particular attention to two strands of literature. One strand examines China's "old" economic geographies during the 1980s and 1990s, while the other strand builds on recent insights in economic geography on industrial clustering, global and regional production networks, upgrading, relocation, and national and regional industrial evolution, and takes into account the role of state actions and institutional contexts, the rise of China ’ s domestic market, the role of local agents, and other factors that have been often overlooked in traditional industrial restructuring literature.

Abstract:Since the early 2000s, the “race to the bottom” that typified the “China price” and the model of export-oriented industrialization has been challenged by various factors, triggering another round of industrial restructuring and producing new economic geographies of production and employment in China. This paper provides a review of existing research on the new economic geographies of China's manufacturing industries. In doing so, we seek to show how critical engagements with China may help us “theorize back” at the dominant discourses and theories in economic geography (e.g., global value chain, global production network, new regionalism, spatial fix, and labor agency theories). Specifically, this paper focuses on two strands of literature that have engaged critically with China and sought to remake the economic geography through new insights from China—one on China's new geographical and industrial dynamics and the other on the issue of labor agency and labor regime in China. We argue that the sheer pace and rapidity of regional dynamics in China provide a fertile ground for new conceptual development, methodological innovation, and empirical insights.

Abstract:China's rapid economic growth has been fueled by industrialization and urbanization. Given its export focus, this industrialization was spatially concentrated in the coastal eastern cities. Over the last decade, a spatial transformation has taken place leading to a deindustrialization of the rich coastal cities and sharp industrial growth in the inland cities. This survey examines recent work that studies the economic geography of industrial production, pollution, and quality of life in China's cities. We focus on the interaction between firms, local governments, and the central government that together determine the new economic geography of industry and pollution within China.

Abstract:In the light of evolutionary economic geography, a city's export structure can reflect its capacity. Based on China's export data during 2001-2011, this paper examines the evolution of 338 Chinese cities' export structures, and their spatial patterns and product dynamics. By employing hierarchical clustering analysis and new indicators to measure Chinese's export product and destination structures, this paper shows that regional disparity in terms of export product and destination structures exists. More importantly, the evolution of Chinese cities' export structure is co-shaped by the process of convergence and divergence. We argue that regional disparity can be alleviated by reducing market segmentation and facilitating inter-city knowledge spillovers. Furthermore, the export product structures of Chinese cities are highly correlated with their export destination structures, indicating that export promotion policies should take into account both export product diversification and export market diversification.

Abstract:Based on a hypothesis of increasing returns of scale and non-perfect competitive market,spatial economics is concerned with the power,forms,and effects of agglomeration,and explains how spatial factors work in resource allocation.China's present domestic researches on spatial economics focus on diversified agglomeration,which consists of industry agglomeration,urban cities and urban crowding as well as integrated regions.Through a study on the spatial distribution of industry agglomeration,researchers analyze the causes of agglomeration formation,especially the roles the opening-up and local protectionism(two special factors in China) play in the said formation,and then the effects the various agglomeration forms bring about.After presenting diversities of the agglomeration's effects,they acknowledge that China's regional differences are inevitable in a certain period of time.Therefore,factor floating and market integration play a decisive role in regional coordination and growth.These conclusions provide a fresh perspective for the further development of the theory concerning China's development and reform,and a new theoretical basis for the formulation of industrial policies and regional policies,while making more space for the development of spatial economics itself.Finally,it is pointed out that the domestic main research orientation in the future will be focused on the theoretic innovation of spatial economics,the development of micro-level mechanism of agglomeration,and the relationships between agglomeration and regional development.

Abstract:Economic transition introduced market forces and globalizing forces into the Chinese economic system, resulting in dramatic spatial transformation of Chinese manufacturing industries. Using a panel dataset of two-digit manufacturing industries by province during the time period of 1980-2003, this study found that most Chinese industries experienced a spatially dispersing process in the 1980s and a polarizing process from the 1990s. Statistical results indicate that comparative advantages, scale economies and globalization forces are the most important locational determinants of Chinese manufacturing industries.

Abstract:The paper tries to construct the historical methodology for evolutionary economic geography. I elevate history to the methodological foundation of evolutionary economic geography, on which concrete research methods should be based. I explore how to evolution in economic geography by placing history in historical time and historical contexts. Accordingly, the concepts of path creation and path dependence should be used together in historical study. More important, the concept of path interdependence, which stresses the importance of the circumstances under which different processes and events are likely to occur, opens a new window on the temporal aspects of the world.

Abstract:The rise of China as the ‘world factory’ has been attributed to the export-oriented industrialization largely driven by some fundamental transformations unfolding in China’s economic, political and cultural arenas, since the Reform and Opening-Up policies. As production costs and competitive pressures both rise, the flexible business environment that export-led production used to embed in has undergone dramatic restructuring and this has further pushed forward new rounds of spatial restructuring and industrial relocation, especially in China’s highly export-oriented apparel industry. Using a large firm-level dataset on new firm formation, we show the articulation of global, regional and local factors are shaping the new firm formation pattern and industrial relocation in interactional and collective ways. The econometric estimations also indicate the ways in which and the extents to which these factors affect firm location choice are highly determined by firm-specific capability.

Abstract:The expansion and upgrading of Chinese industries have accompanied with the spatial restructuring process across the country. This paper provides a literature review on China’s industrial geography, paying special attention to industrial agglomeration and industrial clusters. The increasing industrial agglomeration and development of industrial clusters have been the prominent characteristics of dynamics of industrial landscape in China. The major driving forces of China’s industrial geography include economic globalization, decentralization and regional competition and rebuilding of regional advantages. This paper concludes with a discussion of future research focus.

Abstract:Using the most recent data from the first economic census in China, a team of China-based and American economic geographers investigates the geographical concentration of manufacturing industries at the provincial and county levels by integrating proxy variables for natural advantages, agglomeration economies, and institutional changes (e.g., decentralization) associated with economic transition. The authors focus their investigation on manufacturing activity as a whole, as well as on manufacturing categories at the two- and three-digit levels of aggregation (the latter representing a finer scale of analysis than used in almost all previous studies). Interesting differences emerge in the locational patterns of industries whose enterprises pursue strategies of globalization vis-A-vis local protectionism. Differences also are apparent in the impacts of agglomeration economies and knowledge spillover at different spatial scales. The findings suggest that both spatial scale and level of industrial aggregation matter when analyzing patterns of industrial agglomeration in China.

Abstract:New product promotes the sustainable growth of the local economy. Evolutionary economic geogra-phers believe that the emergence of new products is based on local original products and related industries, say-ing that the development of new industries demands access to local capability. Local capability is the key source of technological and industrial diversification, which provides potentials for regions to diversify into new technologies and industries. Organizational routines are core concept in an evolutionary approach. Eco-nomic evolution can then be understood as the selective transmission of routines among organizational entities. However little attention has yet been paid to the role of spillovers from neighbor regions for industrial diversifi-cation. Regions are in an associative network but not absolutely isolated, especially for the neighbor regions. Knowledge spillovers may occur across regions and successful routines may be transferred to neighbor regions by the way of population mobility and spinoff. So this article discusses whether the evolutionary process can cross space and administrative boundaries based on the current evolutionary theories. To answer this question, we analyze the development of new products in Chinese prefecture-level cities during the period 2002-2013 us-ing the HS 4-digit classification data on exports. The results show that the evolution of product can occur across administrative boundaries between neighbor cities, but only when the local has a good foundation of rel-evant industries. And the decentralization between provinces is a significant barrier for cross-boundary evolu-tion. Besides, taking into account of the different knowledge attributes of products and the regional difference of economic development, there exist significant differences among regions and products in cross-boundary evolutionary mechanisms.

Abstract:This paper probes into future research trend of economic geography on base of study on evolution history of relationship between economics and economic geography.Economic geography was interwoven with economics in period of classical economic geography,in which two disciplines influenced on one another;from 1930s to 1980s,economics was in a leading position while economic geographers had little effects on development of mainstream economics;absorbing related theories of economics,economic geography fulfilled cultural,institutional and relational turns,meantime,the mainstream economics appeared a geography turn and initiated the New Economic Geography; since 1980s,the evolutionary thoughts has increasingly received attentions of economists.The economic geographers accepted core concepts of evolutionary economics and began to set up framework of evolutionary economic geography from 1990s.According to historical review,this paper argues that evolutionary economic geography will be next important dialog between economics and economic geographer.

Abstract:After theThree Northern Portsopening up,the Northern China’s main economic factors changed over time and their space displacement occurred gradually,which led to the previous traditional domestic political economy networks,that Beijing and the provincial capital as the economic central city and post road and canals as the main mode of transport transformed into the modern international market economy system,which Tianjin,Qingdao and other port cities as the economic central city and railways,highways,maritime transport,telecommunications as the main mode of communication.By the 1920s,the spatial extent of the Northern China’s economic zone,from Zhili and along the Great Canal area with Beijing as the central city,extended to Shandong,Hebei,Shanxi,Chahar,Rehe five provinces with Tianjin and Qingdao as the central city,as well as the Yellow River watershed areas in Henan and Jiangsu Province.Despite this integration caused new regional economic differences throughout the North China,it accelerated the agriculture,animal husbandry,industrial,commercial’s modernization and domestic and international market linkages,upgraded the Northern China’s economic status in the whole country,adapted to the historical trend of global and regional economic integration.

Abstract:China has experienced substantial spatial restructuring of manufacturing industries since the economic reforms. Chinese manufacturing industries reversed an early drop in industrial agglomeration and have been increasingly agglomerated since the early 1990s. Resource-intensive industries have been relatively dispersed while export-oriented industries have been progressively agglomerated. Industries driven by market and global forces are agglomerated while those favoured and protected by local governments are widely dispersed. Statistical analysis confirms a significant positive relationship between industrial agglomeration and labour productivity in China. This positive relationship was particularly prominent in liberalised and globalised industries in the 1980s and has been found in most industries since the 1990s. The empirical results imply that marketisation and globalisation have stimulated industrial agglomeration and thereby raised industrial competitiveness in China.

Abstract:Economic transition, which can be conceptualized a triple process of marketization, globalization and decentralization, has significantly shaped China's economic geography. Marketization introduced market competition and allowed market forces to distribute resources, stimulating firms to locate along the line of comparative advantages. Economic globalization further opened the Chinese economy to international competition, encouraging the geographical concentration of Chinese industries. Regional decentralization however induced fierce interregional competition, resulting in local protectionism and rational imitation of industrial policies and therefore stimulating the geographical dispersion of Chinese industries. As economic transition proceeds, there has been substantial spatial restructuring in Chinese manufacturing industries. Most industries experienced spatially dispersing process in the 1980s and have been increasingly agglomerated since the early 1990s. Chinese provinces had been diversifying their industrial compositions in the 1980s but have been gradually more specialized since the late 1990s. The geographical patterns of Chinese manufacturing industries significantly vary by industry. Statistical results show that significant locational determinants of Chinese manufacturing industries include industrial policies, labor quality and cost, scale economies, natural resources and market accessibility. The significance of locational determinants also depends on the nature of industries. The empirical results would provide scientific supports for regional industrial policies.
