Abstract:Cryogenic treatment attracts much attention and obtains practical application in wide fields,since it helps to improve the mechanical performance of some metal or nonmetal materials,such as strength,hardness,abradability and dimension stability.The selection of the treatment process and device is important for this technique.Based on a review of main influence factors during cryogenic treatment,some typical examples of treatment device are categorized and introduced.A short prospect is also present for future development of this technique.

Abstract:This paper explores the crucial role of cryogenic mediums in driving breakthroughs within the biomedical sector. The objective was to investigate, critically discuss, and present the current knowledge and state-of-the-art practices, along with the challenges and perspectives of the most common applications. Through an extensive literature review, this work aims to supplement existing research, offering a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the subject. Biomedical research involving cryogenic mediums is advancing on multiple fronts, including the development of advanced medical technologies, clinical treatments for life-threatening conditions, high-quality biospecimen preservation, and antimicrobial interventions in industrial food processing. These advances open new horizons and present cutting-edge opportunities for research and the medical community. While the current body of evidence showcases the impressive impact of cryogenic mediums, such as nitrogen, helium, argon, and oxygen, on revolutionary developments, reaching definitive conclusions on their efficiency and safety remains challenging due to process complexity and research scarcity with a moderate certainty of evidence. Knowledge gaps further underline the need for additional studies to facilitate cryogenic research in developing innovative technological processes in biomedicine. These advancements have the potential to reshape the modern world and significantly enhance the quality of life for people worldwide.

Abstract:The cryosphere of the Earth overlaps with the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere over vast areas with temperatures below 0 degrees C and pronounced H2O phase changes. In spite of its strong variability in space and time, the cryosphere plays the role of a global thermostat, keeping the thermal regime on the Earth within rather narrow limits, affording continuation of the conditions needed for the maintenance of life. Objects and processes related to cryosphere are very diverse, due to the following basic reasons: the anomalous thermodynamic and electromagnetic properties of H2O, the intermediate intensity of hydrogen bonds and the wide spread of cryogenic systems all over the Earth. However, these features attract insufficient attention from research communities. Cryology is usually understood as a descriptive discipline within physical geography, limited to glaciology and permafrost research. We emphasise its broad interdisciplinary landscape involving physical, chemical and biological phenomena related to the H2O phase transitions and various forms of ice. This paper aims to draw the attention of readers to the crucial importance of cryogenic anomalies, which make the Earth atmosphere and the entire Earth system very special, if not unique, objects in the universe.

Abstract:This article describes the application of cryogens in liquid fluid energy storage systems and compares liquid fluid energy storage systems with conventional compressed air energy storage systems. The study focuses on the thermodynamic characteristics of different cryogens used in liquid fluid energy storage systems. It is found that liquid fluid energy storage systems have competitive factors like high energy density and no geographical limitation. A comparative analysis is conducted to present the advantages and disadvantages of different cryogens. The results show that liquid fluid energy storage systems have a promising future in large scale energy storage.

Abstract:Cavitation occurs as the fluid pressure is lower than the vapor pressure at a local thermodynamic state and may result in huge damage to the hydraulic machinery. Cavitation in cryogenic liquids is widely present in contemporary science, and the characteristics of cryogenic cavitation are quite different from those of water due to thermal effects and strong variations in fluid properties. The present paper reviews recent progress made toward performing experimental measurements and developing modeling strategies to thoroughly investigate cryogenic cavitation. The thermodynamic properties of cryogenic fluids are first analyzed, and different scaling laws for thermal effects estimation are then introduced. As far as cryogenic cavitation experimental research is concerned, the progress made in the cavitation visualization and cavity dynamics and the synchronous measurements of the multi-physical field are mainly introduced. As for the study on numerical simulation of cryogenic cavitation, the commonly used cavitation models and turbulence models are, respectively, classified and presented, and the modifications and improvements of the cavitation model and turbulence model for thermal effect modeling of cryogenic cavitation are examined. Then, several advances of critical issues in cryogenic fluid cavitation research are reviewed, including the influences of thermal effects, unsteady shedding mechanisms, cavitation-vortex interactions, and cavitation-induced vibration/noise. This review offers a clear vision of the state-of-the-art from both experimental and numerical modeling viewpoints, highlights the critical study developments and identifies the research gaps in the literature, and gives an outlook for further research on cryogenic cavitation. Abstract:Sorption cryocoolers are of great interest for cooling vibration-sensitive instruments due to their nature of no vibration. This review presents the basic principle and brief developments of sorption cryocoolers, and discusses the measures improving their performance. At present, activated carbon is the main adsorbent for physisorption cryocoolers that can produce cooling at the temperatures ranging from 185 K to 4.5 K with Joule-Thomson (JT) cryocoolers and sub-kelvin cooling with evaporative cryocoolers. Metal hydride, manganese nitride and praseodymium cerium oxide are the main absorbents for chemisorption JT cryocoolers that can achieve 20 K, 75 K and 80 K using hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen gases as working fluids, respectively. The sorption cryocoolers have the potential life-times for more than 15 years, and the life-times of physisorption JT cryocoolers are mainly determined by the only moving parts-check valves, whereas the life-times of chemisorption JT cryocoolers are affected by both check valves and sorbent stability. However, the efficiencies of sorption cryocoolers are still lower than mechanical cryocoolers. To realize the comparable efficiencies as mechanical cryocoolers, more efficient sorbents are required. Besides, there is plenty of room for efficiency improvement through the optimization of the compression cycle and key components related to sorption cryocoolers. This review aims to provide a reference for researchers interested in sorption cryocoolers for both space-based and ground-based applications and to identify the potential directions on this topic.
Dissolved Gases and Ice Fracturing During the Freezing of a Multicellular Organism: Lessons from Tardigrades

Abstract:Three issues are critical for successful cryopreservation of multicellular material: gases dissolved in liquid, thermal conductivity of the tissue, and localization of microstructures. Here we show that heat distribution is controlled by the gas amount dissolved in liquids and that when changing the liquid into solid, the dissolved gases either form bubbles due to the absence of space in the lattice of solids and/or are migrated toward the concentrated salt and sugar solution at the cost of amount of heat required to be removed to complete a solid-state transition. These factors affect the heat distribution in the organs to be cryopreserved. We show that the gas concentration issue controls fracturing of ice when freezing. There are volumetric changes not only when changing the liquid into solid (volume increases) but also reduction of the volume when reaching lower temperatures (volume decreases). We discuss these issues parallel with observations of the cryosurvivability of multicellular organisms, tardigrades, and discuss their analogy for cryopreservation of large organs.
Characterization of Micro-/Nano-Scale Ice Crystal Formation in Cryo-Biomedical Engineering: A Review

Abstract:The micro- and nano-scale freezing has been a focus in many fields of scientific research and engineering practices, especially in those involved with cryobiology physics. Although a series of theoretical models and experimental techniques have been available to tackle the tough issues that associate with the freezing phase change process, the topic to quantify the ice crystal formation and its subsequent effects on the biological materials were not sufficiently addressed at all, especially when facing the newly emerging area of nano-cryobiology technology. Not only the interactions between the ice front and the cell, but also the heat and solute balance during freezing produce impact on the output of a cryosurgery or cryopreservation. There is currently a strong lack of the generalized methods which are indispensable to grasp the physical pictures from micro or nanoscale aspect and thus help achieve an intensive understanding of the mechanisms of cell damage during process of ice crystallization. This review article is dedicated to present an overview on the theoretical and experimental strategies potentially appropriate for quantifying the ice crystal formation in cryobiology area. Attentions will be focused on several major theoretical directions such as the thermodynamic theory, the kinetic theory, and the density functional theory etc., concerning the micro or nano phase change and the ice nucleation activities. Interpretation of the effects of external conditions such as freezing rate, interfacial effect, size effects, electric field and restricted space etc. on the ice growth will be given. Numerical simulation method and experimental techniques will also be outlined. The review does not intend to give an exhaustive knowledge of all the themes, but rather to provide a most basic background for further probing the emerging nano-cryobiology field and thus promote innovation in future research and practices of cryobiology.

Abstract:The recent developments in deep space exploration and renewable energy transition involve many critical topics on cryogenic fluids, including cryogenic propellant management, optimal energy conservation, and large-scale energy storage and transportation. Efficient long-term storage technologies with minimum boil-off loss are essential for improving the energy storage efficiency. Appropriate modeling of the cryogenic quasi-steady liquid vapor phase change has become a bottleneck for the design of cryogenic storage systems. This work comprehensively reviewed the characteristics of cryogenic quasi-steady liquid-vapor phase change processes, as well as the derivations and validation of popular phase change models. The performances of the numerical models in literature were evaluated in aspects of calculation speed, precision, and robustness. State-of-the-art experimental and numerical studies on cryogenic quasi-steady phase change in self-pressurization, thermal stratification, rollover, and thin film evaporation processes were reviewed. Recent advances in the optimization of the numerical models were summarized, which were still insufficient for long-term simulations of cryogenic storage tanks. Furthermore, mechanism research of cryogenic quasi-steady phase change was far from reaching a consensus. New simulation methods, as well as advanced experimental technologies, should be employed to deepen the understanding of quasi-steady cryogenic interfacial heat and mass transport. This review is conducive to promoting the design and application of cryogenic storage systems in the aerospace, liquefied natural gas, and hydrogen industries.

Abstract:An accurate prediction of non-isothermal gas-liquid interfaces in cryogenic two-phase flows is crucial for the high-efficiency energy storage, transportation, and utilization of liquid hydrogen. However, temperature difference and interfacial mass and energy transport can change the thermodynamic state of gas-liquid interfaces and thereby impact the distribution. And the lower surface tension coefficient and viscosity of liquid hydrogen, compared to room-temperature fluids, increase the likelihood of the instability and breakage of non- isothermal interfaces. Conventional numerical methods suffer from a scarcity of precision and the propagation of spurious velocities in predicting such flows. In this study, a new numerical framework called cryoFoam was developed based on an open source CFD code OpenFOAM to address the issue of the inaccurate capture of non- isothermal cryogenic interfaces. A practical interface-capturing model involving phase change was implemented to achieve the uniform distribution of surface forces in both gas and liquid phases. The tangential surface force was incorporated into the governing equations to realize thermocapillary convection. The Schrage model, a widely-used phase change model, was employed to deal with condensation and evaporation. The performance of the solver was assessed using five benchmarks which involve thermocapillary flows and phase changes in liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, and liquid methane. The results show that the new method can reduce large spurious velocities and prevent the distortion of isotherms near the curved interface in cryogenic fluids. It demonstrates higher precision than the traditional VOF method in predicting cryogenic thermocapillary convection and interfacial energy transport.

Abstract:Tribology at cryogenic temperatures has attracted much attention since the 1950s with the acceleration of its applications in high-tech equipment such as cryogenic wind tunnels, liquid fuel rockets, space infrared telescopes, superconducting devices, and planetary exploration, which require solid lubrication for moving parts at low temperatures down to 4 K in cryogenic liquid, gaseous, or vacuum environments. Herein, the research progress regarding cryo-tribology is reviewed. The tribological properties and mechanisms of solid lubricants listed as carbon materials, molybdenum disulfide, polymers, and polymer-based composites with decreasing temperature are summarized. The friction coefficient increases with decreasing temperature induced by thermally activated processes. The mechanism of transfer film formation should be considered as a significant way to enhance the tribological properties of solid lubricants. In addition, applications of solid lubrication on moving parts under cryogenic conditions, such as spherical plain bearings and roller bearings, are introduced. The technology for tribological testing of materials and bearings at cryogenic temperatures is summarized, where the environmental control, motion and loading realization, as well as friction and wear measurement together in a low-temperature environment, result in the difficulties and challenges of the low-temperature tribotester. In particular, novel technologies and tribotesters have been developed for tribotests and tribological studies of solid lubricants, spherical plain bearings, and roller bearings, overcoming limitations regarding cooling in vacuum and resolution of friction measurement, among others, and concentrating on in-situ observation of friction interface. These not only promote a deep understanding of friction and wear mechanism at low temperatures, but also provide insights into the performance of moving parts or components in cryogenic applications.

Abstract:The article presents a brief review of cooling systems that ensure various temperature levels (from 0.1 K to 230 K) for radio astronomical receivers of photonic and electronic (or optical and radio) devices. The features of various cooling levels and the requirements for the design of the cooling systems are considered in detail, as well as the approaches to designing interfaces for cooled receivers: vacuum, cryogenic, electrical, mechanical, optical, and other interfaces required for effective operation. The presented approaches to design are illustrated by a series of joint developments of the authors carried out over the past 45 years, including those produced over the past year.

Abstract:Over the last two years we have witnessed a continuation in the breakthrough shift toward pulse tube cryocoolers for long-life, high-reliability cryocooler applications. One class of pulse tubes that has reached maturity is referred to as "Stirling type" because they are based on the linear Oxford Stirling-cooler type compressor; they generally provide cooling in the 30 to 100 K temperature range and operate at frequencies from 30 to 60 Hz. The other type of pulse tube cooler making great advances is the so-called "Gifford-McMahon type. " Pulse tube coolers of this type use a G-M type compressor and lower frequency operation to achieve temperatures in the 2 to 10 K temperature range. Nearly a third of this proceedings covers these new developments in the pulse tube arena. Complementing the work on low-temperature pulse tubes is substantial continued progress on rare earth regenerator materials and Gifford-McMahon coolers. These technologies continue to make great progress in opening up the 2 - 4 K market. Also in the commercial sector, continued interest is being shown in the development of long-life, low-cost cryocoolers for the emerging high temperature superconductor electronics market, particularly the cellular telephone base-station market. At higher temperature levels, closed-cycle J-T or throttle-cycle refrigerators are taking advantage of mixed refrigerant gases, spearheaded in the former USSR, to achieve low-cost cr- cooler systems in the 65 - 80 K temperature range.

Abstract:Inside Front Cover: The cover image is based on the Research Article Liquid encapsulation in a freezing sessile drop by Lyu et al. This paper demonstrates that the environmental medium, particularly one with high thermal conductivity such as a liquid, has nonnegligible heat exchange with both the drop and the substrate, which changes the final outcome of a freezing drop.
