Abstract:Surface flatness and bonding strength of fusion interface are two key properties of cladding quality. The paper proposes a method to simultaneously tune these two properties by Marangoni flow in the molten pool. The powders of T15 steel with different content of CeO2 lead to a change of Marangoni flow from inward to outward. Surface flatness and interfacial bonding strength are obtained through 3D structured-light camera and tensile test, respectively. The Marangoni flow is formulated by a comprehensive multi-component multiphase flow model. An outward flow with 0.9 wt% CeO2 reduces surface flatness down to 180 mu m, and an inward flow up to 321 mu m. The fusion interface tends to be flat, and fusion zone is composed of columnar dendrites with added CeO2. The interfacial cracks initiate along the tangential direction of fusion interface, and the columnar dendrites inhibit crack propagation vertically, reducing fractured height from 810 mu m with T15 powder to 468 mu m with added 0.6 wt% CeO2. The primary fractured mechanism changes from intergranular to cleavage fracture. Interfacial bonding strength decreases by 80 MPa. The multi-layer cladding process is proposed with powder T15 in the first layer and T15 + 0.9 wt% CeO2 in the subsequent layers, balancing both surface flatness and bonding strength.
