Abstract:Power module is the most significant equipment in modern electrical grid. Electrical tree growing on the gel-substrate surface is the main form of insulation failure in power module packages, which seriously threatens the stable operation of power module. However, treeing behaviors along the surface are currently unclear. In this research, electrical tree morphological characteristics growing on the gel-substrate surface under unipolar square wave voltage with a frequency of 1 kHz∼20 kHz were investigated. Moreover, the effect mechanism of frequency on electrical tree morphology were analyzed. The morphologies of electrical tree growing on the gel-substrate surface are different significantly from that in conventional solid media. The results show that the electrical trees show branch-like, bush-like and pine-like and the branching type can be classified into pearl-chain type, microcavity-cloud type and smoky type at different frequencies. The electrical tree morphology during the initial stage becomes denser with increasing frequency. At lower frequencies, the morphology gradually transitions from branch-like to jungle-like, while from jungle-like to pine-like at higher frequencies. The carbonization of the electrical tree is more severe at higher frequencies. The carbonized branches inhibit PDs and change the electric field distribution, which, in combination with the self-healing effect of silicone gel, the electrical tree develops towards pine-like structure at higher frequencies. The research is expected to provide a theoretical and experimental basis for package insulation performance improvement of power modules.
