Abstract:This paper presents a novel methodical approach to hybrid modulators (HMs) design used in providing variable power supply (VPS) for Power Amplifiers. Theory of operation and different design considerations affecting HMs design procedure are discussed. This paper proposes a new approach to using inductors in HMs by integrating them on-chip instead of relying on off-chip inductors. It offers a detailed analysis of the relation between the inductor value and the switching frequency of the HM, as well as guidelines for choosing the inductor value. Compared to conventional HMs employing a sensing resistor, a resistor structure, or a current to voltage converter with an external reference voltage in the comparison section increasing the output ripple and the power loss, this architecture proposes a new sensing and controlling circuit without employing resistor structures and external reference voltages. The proposed methodology offers various advantages over conventional HM designs, including determining the inductor value, integrating it as an on-chip component, developing a model based on current comparison without the need for off-chip components or external reference voltages, and providing a systematic design strategy. A design example of a fully integrated VPS-HM based on the suggested methodology is implemented in the 180 nm CMOS process with 88% efficiency, 23.2 dBm output power, and the highest figure of merit compared to similar works. The proposed structure can track a 64-QAM signal with 400 MHz bandwidth and 11 dB peak-to-average power ratio, making it perfect for broadband and emerging telecommunications applications such as 5G and 6G.
