Abstract:Layered heterostructures have gained significant attention as potential platforms for energy storage because of their unique electronic and interfacial characteristics. Engineering heterojunctions in a rational, efficient, and effective manner is critical to well-defined battery systems. Herein, FePSe3-FeSe2 heterojunctions uniformly in Ketjen black carbon matrix (FePSe3-FeSe2/C) were prepared by a one-step phosphorization-selenization method. The conductive carbon matrix can prevent the aggregation of FePSe3-FeSe2 hexagonal nanoplatelets. Moreover, theoretical calculations demonstrate that FePSe3-FeSe2 heterostructure with a strong asymmetric electric field can facilitate K+ intercalation. Notably, FePSe3-FeSe2/C with rich active sites would undergo negative fading which results in a capacity increasing upon cycling. As anode for potassium ion batteries (PIBs), FePSe3-FeSe2/C can deliver high capacities of 352 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 100 cycles, and 224 mA h g−1 at 1.0 A g−1 after 3700 cycles. The strategy of fabricating FePSe3-FeSe2 heterojunction can be extended to other metal phosphorus trichalcogenides to improve their performance in energy storage. Furthermore, the obtained results provide important insights into hetero-nanostructure design toward fast reaction kinetics for PIBs.

Abstract:Sodium and potassium ion batteries (SIBs and PIBs) have received a substantial amount of attention in large-scale applications due to the abundance and low price of sodium and potassium metals. However, large-sized Na+ and K+ can cause sluggish kinetics, large volume change and unsatisfactory cycling behaviors. Herein, highly dispersed FeSe2 nanoparticles confined in mesoporous carbon nanofibers (FeSe2@C) were prepared via a novel selenization strategy and utilized as an anode material in both SIBs and PIBs for the first time. The mesoporous FeSe2@C nanocomposite possesses unique structural features including a large surface area and the presence of highly dispersed FeSe2 nanoparticles and a 1D mesocarbon nanofiber matrix, which can efficiently enhance electrical conductivity, facilitate electron/ion transportation and alleviate volume variations, thereby enabling fast Na/K storage kinetics, an outstanding structural integrity and a superior Na/K storage performance. For SIBs, FeSe2@C shows a high charge capacity of 483 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 over 100 cycles, which retains a capacity of 359 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 1.0 A g−1. When employed as anode for PIBs, FeSe2@C displays a high charge capacity of 352 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1. Moreover, the electrochemical kinetic analysis confirms that the excellent pseudocapacitive behavior accounts for the superior sodium/potassium storage performance at high current densities.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have become the most promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage system due to their abundance and low cost. However, previous reports focused on the intercalation-type cathode materials usually showed an inferior capacity, together with a poor cyclic life caused by the repetitive intercalation of large-size K-ions, which hinders their practical application. Here, we combine the strategies of carbon coating, template etching and hydrothermal selenization to prepare yolk-shelled FeSe2@N-doped carbon nanoboxes (FeSe2@C NBs), where the inner highly-crystalline FeSe2 clusters are completely surrounded by the self-supported carbon shell. The integrated and highly conductive carbon shell not only provides a fast electron/ion diffusion channel, but also prevents the agglomeration of FeSe2 clusters. When evaluated as a conversion-type cathode material for KIBs, the FeSe2@C NBs electrode delivers a relatively high specific capacity of 257 mA h/g at 100 mA/g and potential platform of about 1.6 V, which endow a high energy density of about 411 Wh/kg. Most importantly, by designing a robust host with large internal void space to accommodate the volumetric variation of the inner FeSe2 clusters, the battery based on FeSe2@C NBs exhibits ultra-long cycle stability. Specifically, even after 700 cycles at 100 mA/g, a capacity of 221 mA h/g along with an average fading rate of only 0.02% can be retained, which achieves the optimal balance of high specific capacity and long-cycle stability

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are of great importance in energy storage due to their natural abundance, low cost, and high operating potential compared to lithium and sodium. Herein, we first propose carbon quantum dot coating on VSe2 nanosheets (VSe2@CQDs) as anodes for PIBs with the solvothermal and annealing methods. In the composite, carbon quantum dots are embedded in VSe2 nanosheets, which inhibit the aggregation and volume expansion of the VSe2 nanosheets during cycling, resulting in stabilizing the structure and long cycling stability. Besides, with abundant edge positions and surface oxygen-containing functional groups, small-sized carbon quantum dots have strong absorption of K+, enhancing the capacity of the composite. As a result, for PIBs, the composite exhibits a superior reversible capacity of 362 mA h g–1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g–1 with a high capacity retention of 76.7%, high rate capacity (255 mA h g–1 at 1000 mA g–1), and a long-term cycling life of 162 mA h g–1 after 3000 cycles at 500 mA g–1 with a high coulombic efficiency (above 99%). The VSe2@CQD composite shows the best performances reported to date for long-term cycling stability, excellent reversible capacity, and rate capacity in TMD-based PIB anodic materials. The excellent performance and simple synthesis indicate the promising VSe2@CQD composite as a potential anode material for PIBs.

Binding Se into Nitrogen‐doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets for High‐performance Potassium Storage

Abstract:Selenium cathode has been demonstrated as a promising candidate of cathode material for low-cost and high-energy density potassium ion batteries (PIBs). Nevertheless, their applications are prevented by poor electrochemical performance due to the shuttle effect of high-order polyselenides, the sluggish diffusion of bigger K+, and the huge volumetric expansion during cycling. In this work, we design a multifunctional Se host (N-HCNS) by grafting ZIF-8-derived microporous carbon onto the surface of N-doped porous carbon nanosheets. The obtained N-HCNS carbon matrix integrates conductivity, captivity, and immobility abilities, which inhibits the polyselenides shuttle, improves the Se utilization, and buffers the volume change during cycling. The 3D hollow carbon skeleton enhances the infiltration of electrolytes. As an cathode for PIBs, the Se@N-HCNS electrode delivers an unprecedented life-span (260 mAh g(-1) at 1.0 A g(-1) after 2000 cycles) and exhibits a remarkable rate capacity (339 mAh g(-1) at 5.0 A g(-1)). Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals the effective adsorption of K2Se with pyridine and pyrrole nitrogen doping in carbon matrix. The unique synergetic design of electrode not only gives insight into the reaction mechanism but also highly emphasizes the potential capabilities of N-doped carbon in K-Se batteries.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have the potential to be a high-capacity anode material for potassium ion batteries (PIBs) due to their multielectron transfer, while their rapid capacity decay hinders the commercial application due to large-sized K + . Herein, we design a new strategy to synthesize the (110) plane dominated FeSe 2 particle microspheres coated by N-doped carbon (FeSe 2 @C). The (110) plane dominated FeSe 2 can better facilitate the storage of the large-sized K + , and the surface carbon can inhibit the overgrowth of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) during cycling. In addition, the porous structure provides abundant channels for K + diffusion, benefiting the rate performance. More importantly, the FeSe 2 microparticles would break down into smaller nanoparticles and mix with carbon layer to form interweaved network after cycling, which could expose more active sites for K + redox and enhance the structure stability, thus improving the specific capacity and cycling stability. As an anode material, this unique structure delivers a high capacity (363.2 mA h g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 over 200 cycles) and remarkable rate capability (285.2 mAh g −1 at 20 A g −1 ) in PIBs. Impressively, the FeSe 2 @C anode achieves a remarkable long-term cyclability (0.013 % capacity decay per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2 A g −1 ).

Abstract:Transition metal selenides (TMSs) have emerged as promising electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), whereas the large volume expansion and sluggish reaction kinetics have seriously hindered the cycle life and rate performance. Herein, a hierarchical composite of flower-like CoSe 2 /N, P-doped carbon microspheres accommodated on carbon nanosheets (CoSe 2 -NPC@CNS) was rationally fabricated as the anode for PIBs through a one-pot hydrothermal and subsequent selenization method. The intimate hybridization of CoSe 2 /N, P-doped carbon microspheres can effectively alleviate the volume expansion of CoSe 2 during charge-discharge cycles, and the ultrathin carbon nanosheets derived from fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) slurry serves as a highly conductive and buffered substrate. By robustly merging them together, the interconnected hierarchical nanoarchitecture with exposed active sites achieves promoted potassium storage capacity, electrochemical reaction kinetics, and structural stability. As a result, the PIBs with CoSe 2 -NPC@CNS anode deliver high reversible capacities of 320.8 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and 213.9 mAh g −1 after 850 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 , excellent rate capability (188.8 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ), and enhanced pseudo-capacitive contribution rate of 88.7 %. This work offers valuable insight into the rational design and development of hierarchical anode materials with high performance for PIBs and beyond.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have aroused intensive interests as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for large-scale energy storage, however, the lack of high performance anode material is one of the key challenges for their development, which is mainly caused by the large size of potassium ions inducing severe volume change and pulverization of anode materials. Here, we report a FeSe2/nitrogen-doped carbon (FeSe2/NC) composite with a structure of N-doped carbon-coated FeSe2 nanoparticles anchored on thin carbon nanosheets matrix as an anode material for PIBs. Benefiting from the nanosized particles reducing the ion diffusion length, the protective carbon coating alleviating volume fluctuation, and the carbon nanosheets matrix facilitating electrons transport, the FeSe2/NC electrode delivers high capacities of 434 mA h g−1 after 70 cycles at 0.1 A g−1, and 301 mA h g−1 after 250 cycles at 1.0 A g−1. Meanwhile, the potassium storage mechanism of FeSe2 has been preliminarily investigated by using ex situ X-ray diffraction technique and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The remarkable performance and easy preparation demonstrate the great promise of FeSe2/NC composite as a potential anode material for PIBs.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are considered as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage. While exploring suitable anode materials are of vital need for the practical applications of PIBs. Herein, a well-designed heterostructured anode material CoSe nanocubes wrapped by N-doped carbon (), has been successfully fabricated by simple annealing ZIF-67 nanocubes followed by in-situ selenization process. It is noted that ZIF-67 nanocubes are used as an effective template for the formation of porous structure, which can facilitate the construction of heterogeneous interface between CoSe and N-doped carbon (NC), effectively stabilizing CoSe with conversion reaction product Co0, increasing the diffusion mobility of electrons and K+-ions, and alleviating huge volume change. As expected, the heterostructured nanocubes exhibit excellent K+-storage performance, which can display a rather high initial charge capacity (388.7 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 with the columbic efficiency of 70%), superior cyclic stability (309.6 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles at 2 A g−1), and exceptional rate capability (365.9 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1). In terms of the low-cost and facile production approach for , which makes the a promising anode material for PIBs.

Abstract:As the most competitive candidate to lithium-ion batteries, potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have gained widespread attention for next-generation power storage devices owing to their superior performance and economical price. However, the electrode materials of PIBs have been suffering from a huge volume expansion caused by the large radius of K+ during potassiation/depotassiation, which leads to poor cyclic stability and rate capability. Herein, FeS2 nanoparticles anchored on the inner wall of N/S-doped hollow carbon spheres (FeS2@HCS) have been elaborately designed and fabricated by a scalable electrospray and template method. The FeS2@HCS anode exhibits a remarkable capacity of 425 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1 after 100 cycles, accompanied by a pimping capacity fading of 0.05% per cycle and a superior rate capacity of 302 mAh g–1 at 2.0 A g–1. Such outstanding electrochemical properties could be ascribed to the distinct microstructure of FeS2 nanoparticles anchored on the inner wall of hollow carbon spheres and the protective N/S-doped carbon shell. Abstract:Sb2Se3 shows some promising potentials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity induced by conversion and alloying reaction, but the poor alloying reaction reversibility severely limits battery performance. Herein, flexible Sb2Se3 nanorods supported by holey rGO composite membranes (Sb2Se3 @h-rGO) are prepared by a direct vacuum filtration and subsequent reduction process, where the pre-electrostatic interaction of Sb3+ and O2- urges the formation of SbOC bonds between Sb2Se3 nanorods and h-rGO. When employed as anode for PIBs, free-standing Sb2Se3 @h-rGO electrodes exhibit excellent cycling stability with a high capacity of 382.8 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 500 cycles. It is demonstrated that SbOC bonds can dramatically enhance the alloying reaction reversibility, electrochemical kinetics and structural stability of Sb2Se3 nanorods upon cycling.

Abstract:The potassium-ion battery (PIB) is the most promising alternative to a lithium-ion battery (LIB). Exploitation of a suitable electrode material is crucial to promote the development of PIBs. The MoSe2 material has attracted much attention due to its high theoretical capacity, unique layered structure, and good conductivity. However, the potassium storage property of MoSe2 has been suffering from structural fragmentation and sluggish reaction kinetic caused by large potassium ions upon insertion/extraction, which needs to be further improved. Herein, the MoSe2 nanosheets are confined into N-doped hollow porous carbon microspheres (MoSe2@N-HCS) by spray drying and high-temperature selenization. It delivers a superior rate performance of 113.7 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1 and remains at a high capacity of 158.3 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 even after 16 700 cycles for PIBs. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to unique structure, N-doping, and robust chemical bonds. The storage mechanism of MoSe2 for potassium ions was explored. The outstanding properties of MoSe2@N-HCS make it a promising anode material for PIBs.

Abstract:The Fe7Se8@Carbon (C) nanotubes are successfully synthesized using Fe3O4@C nanotubes as sacrificial templates. Fe7Se8@C nanotubes exhibit excellent rate behaviour and maintainable capacity (319 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1 upon 720 cycles), when utilized as SIBs anode. Moreover, for PIBs anode, Fe7Se8@C nanotubes also exhibit outstanding rate behaviour and maintainable capacity 222 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1 upon 500 cycles). The superior electrochemical performance of Fe7Se8@C nanotubes is ascribed to the unique structure, where the hierarchical hollow tubular characteristic of Fe7Se8@C composites can mitigate the volume expansion of Fe7Se8 and supply effective transmission paths for both Na+(K+) and electrons within repeated cycle processes, and additionally, N-doped carbon layer can further protect the integrality of Fe7Se8@C nanotubes from destruction within the cycle processes, and enhance electronic conductivity.

Abstract:The potassium–selenium (K–Se) battery is considered as an alternative solution for stationary energy storage because of abundant resource of K. However, the detailed mechanism of the energy storage process is yet to be unraveled. Herein, the findings in probing the working mechanism of the K‐ion storage in Se cathode are reported using both experimental and computational approaches. A flexible K–Se battery is prepared by employing the small‐molecule Se embedded in freestanding N ‐doped porous carbon nanofibers thin film (Se@NPCFs) as cathode. The reaction mechanisms are elucidated by identifying the existence of short‐chain molecular Se encapsulated inside the microporous host, which transforms to K2Se by a two‐step conversion reaction via an "all‐solid‐state" electrochemical process in the carbonate electrolyte system. Through the whole reaction, the generation of polyselenides (K2Sen, 3 ≤ n ≤ 8) is effectively suppressed by electrochemical reaction dominated by Se2 molecules, thus significantly enhancing the utilization of Se and effecting the voltage platform of the K–Se battery. This work offers a practical pathway to optimize the K–Se battery performance through structure engineering and manipulation of selenium chemistry for the formation of selective species and reveal its internal reaction mechanism in the carbonate electrolyte.

Abstract:The poor cycling stability and rate performance of transition metal selenides (TMSs) are caused by their intrinsic low conductivity and poor structural stability, which hinders their application in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). To address this issue, encapsulating TMSs within carbon nanoshells is considered a viable strategy. However, due to the lack and uncontrollability of internal void space, this structure cannot effectively mitigate the volume expansion induced by large K+, resulting in unsatisfactory electrochemical performance. Herein, peanut-shaped FeSe2@carbon yolk-shell capsules are prepared by modulation of the internal space. The active FeSe2 is encapsulated within a robust carbon shell and an optimal void space is retained between them. The outer carbon shell promotes electronic conductivity and avoids FeSe2 aggregation, while the internal void mitigates volume expansion and effectively ensures the structural integrity of the electrode. Consequently, the FeSe2@carbon anode demonstrates exceptional rate performance (242 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1) and long cycling stability (350 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g-1). Furthermore, the effect of internal space modulation on electrochemical properties is elucidated. Meanwhile, ex situ characterizations elucidate the K+ storage mechanism. This work provides effective guidance for the design and the internal space modulation of advanced TMSs yolk-shell structures.
CoSe@N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes as a Potassium-Ion Battery Anode with High Initial Coulombic Efficiency and Superior Capacity Retention

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have gained significant interest in recent years from the battery research community because potassium is an earth-abundant and redox-active metal, thus having the potential to replace lithium-ion batteries for sustainable energy storage. However, the current development of KIBs is critically challenged by the lack of competitive electrode materials that can reversibly store large amounts of K+ and electrolyte systems that are compatible with the electrode materials. Here, we report that cobalt monochalcogenide (CoSe) nanoparticles confined in N-doped carbon nanotubes () can be used as a K+-storing electrode. The composite exhibits a high initial Columbic efficiency (95%), decent capacity (435 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), and stability (282 mAh g–1 2.0 A g–1 after 500 cycles) in a 1 M KPF6–DME electrolyte with K as the anode over the voltage range from 0.01 to 3.0 V. A full KIB cell consisting of this anode and a Prussian blue cathode also shows excellent electrochemical performance (228 mAh g–1 at 0.5 A g–1 after 200 cycles). We show that the NCNT shell is effective not only in providing high electronic conductivity for fast charge transfer but also in accommodating the volume changes during cycling. Abstract:In todays energy field, the long-term development of lithium-ion batteries has been limited due to the scarcity and high cost of lithium resources. On the other hand, research towards of potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) is on the rise. Herein, we synthesize Fe-induced carbon nanotube/nitrogen-doped carbon (FNC) derived from metal–organic frameworks as a promising anode for KIBs. The carbon nanotubes can enhance the electronic conductivity and increase the contact area, thus improving the rate performance. Additionally, the amorphous carbon polyhedral frame can boost the electrochemical stability. Therefore, the FNC electrode exhibits a high reversible capacity (a charge capability of 268 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g−1) and an excellent rate performance.

Abstract:Advanced nanostructured functional materials obtained from the precursors of metal–organic frameworks show several unique advantages, including plentiful porous structures and large specific surface areas. Based on this, designed and constructed are highly dispersed ZnSe nanoparticles anchored in a N‐doped porous carbon rhombic dodecahedron (ZnSe@NDPC) by a sequential high‐temperature pyrolysis and selenization method. The specific synthesis process involves a two‐step heat treatment of the template‐engaged reaction between zinc‐based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF‐8) and selenium power. By optimizing the calcination temperature, the as‐synthesized ZnSe@NDPC‐700 as an advanced anode of potassium ion batteries demonstrates the best electrochemical performance, including a high capacity (262.8 mA h g−1 over 200 cycles at 100 mA g−1) and a good rate capability (109.4 mA h g−1 at 2000 mA g−1 and 52.8 mA h g−1 at 5000 mA g−1). Moreover, the capacitance and diffusion mechanisms are also investigated by the qualitative and quantitate analysis, finally accounting for the superior K storage.
