Abstract:The advance and meanings of ceramic cutting tools were reviewed. The emphasis was paid on the development, performances and applications of Si_3N_4-based and TiCN-based composite ceramic cutting tools. The composite Si_3N_4-based ceramic cutting tools possess rather high wear-resistance and excellent impact-resistance properties, being fit for rough and finish machining of various cast iron workpieces, including milling and planning of large impact force. The cutting efficiency could be enhanced by 310 times, compared with the cemented carbide tools. The composite TiCN-based cermet cutting tools possess high hardness and wear-resistance, having an excellent performance on machining of diversified steels, for instance hardened steels, of high hardness and strength. When these tools are used in dried machining of high hardness workpieces, a machining process without annealing and coolants can be used rather than a grinding one, so the efficiency is dramatically improved. Up to now, the new types of composite ceramic cutting tools have been applied in China on a variety of industries, including metallurgy, pump, mining-machinery plant, mechanical bearing, ball screw, motor vehicle, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, an experiment has been made to take vibration and surface waviness of two kinds of engineering ceramics ( zirconia ceramics and alumina ceramics) as research targets. The experimental research results show that two kinds of surface waviness are on the workpiece, one is sparse and the other one is dense. It is known that the sparse one is caused by the forced vibration. In order to find out the generation mechanism of the dense one, a further exploration has been made. It shows that the dense surface waviness is caused by the self-excited vibration. Finally, some methods are put forward to reduce the surface waviness.

As the electronic information technology develops toward integration, intelligence, and miniaturization, passive electronic components have become a bottleneck restraining the development of electronic component technology. Therefore, the strategic position of electronic ceramic materials and their processing technologies is increasingly prominent. The field of electronic ceramic materials and components has formed a good industrial technology foundation in China. However, its competitiveness is still insufficient in high-end materials and components, and some key material, process, and equipment technologies are controlled by other countries. Facing the new situation, it is urgent to increase R & D investment, rationalize the system and mechanism, and strengthen the independence and innovation of the industrial chain.

Abstract:There are too many methods to enhance the performance of ceramic cutting tools. All the methods can be sorted into two types: inner modification and surface modification. One of the main method to the inner modification of ceramic cutting tools is dispersion strengthening. Usually, in order to enhance the performance of ceramic cutting tools, some dispersed phases of TiN, TiC or TiCN, Al2O3, and/or ZrO2, and so on, and/or some whiskers, or fibers were added into the ceramic matrixes. And the new types of cutting tools, which possessed much more excellent performance than the original ones, were called composite ceramic cutting tools. For the composite Si3N4-based ceramic, Al2O3-based ceramic, and TiCN-based cermet, the cutting efficiency could be enhanced to 3similar to10 times, compared with cemented carbide tools. And they can be used for rough and finish machining of various cast iron workpieces and hardened steels, respectively, including milling and planning. Ion implantation is a surface modification for ceramic cutting tools. With certain doses of metals, for example, titanium, zirconium and chromium, and so on, implanted into the ceramics, the hardness, Young's modulus, fractural toughness, and bending strength, etc., can be enhanced. For Al2O3 and Si3N4 ceramics, the hardness, Young's modulus, and bending strength increased with a maximum factor of 50%, and the flank wear decreased with a factor of 2similar to12, compared with the unimplanted ceramic cutting tools. However, the main shortcoming of ion implantation to modify ceramics is the thickness of modified layers. They are, usually, too thin for cutting tools. The so-called PHEDP, pulsed high energy density plasma, is another surface modification method for ceramic cutting tools proposed recently. With such method, much thicker coatings of TiN, TiCN and (Ti,Al)N, etc, were deposited onto Si3N4 and WC ceramic cutting tools. The main merits involved in high hardness and Young's modulus of the coatings, low residual stresses, and good adhesive strength between the coatings and substrates. And the flank wear of the as-deposited tools decreased with a factor of 5similar to10.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study on tool wear mechanism and cutting performance evaluation of ceramic cutting tools. Optimal cutting speed (OCS) is first discussed in high speed machining. Tool wear mechanism is analyzed through cutting tests and distinguished from using different cutting speeds, higher, lower, or around OCS. Comparisons between ceramic cutting tools and tungsten-carbide tools, and carbon steel and CrWMn steel are given to evaluate the performance of ceramic cutting tools. Finally, suitability matches of different ceramic cutting tools with different difficult-to-cut work materials are given based on summarizing the authors' long time experimental work.

Abstract:An experimental investigation is carried out to fabricate a new ceramic tool ZrO2/(W, Ti)C by the hot pressing method and to study the effects of (W, Ti)C on the microphotograph of crystal particles, the phase transition and the mechanical properties of the new ceramic tool. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation reveals that the densification degree of the material ZrO2/(W, Ti)C may be improved and that the microstructure of the new ceramic tool material is more homogeneous as a result of the proper addition of the powder (W, Ti)C. Tests of the mechanical properties and wear resistance in machining are conducted. It is found that the fracture toughness of the developed ceramic tool is the highest when the content of powder (W, Ti)C is 45% in terms of volume due to the highest content of tetragonal zirconia. It is also shown that when machining a carbon tool steel the new tool material can increase the tool-life as compared to other ceramic tool materials that have the same matrix but were fabricated without (W, Ti)C, while the fracture toughness is improved by up to 38.8%. When compared with a conventional ceramic tool, the new ceramic tool material exhibit superior ability in maintaining wear resistance during the entire tool-life.

Abstract:This study focuses on the development of the high-end manufacturing equipment industry in China, represented by machine tools. The machine tool referred to herein includes not only the machine tools in traditional definition, such as lathes, milling machines, planers, drilling machines, boring machines, grinders, and gear making machines, but also additive manufacturing equipment and additive-subtractive hybrid manufacturing equipment. This study analyzes the development trends of the machine tool industry in China and the globe, and then studies the problems existing in China’s machine tool industry. Compared with world’s advanced level, China’s machine tool industry still has weaknesses in (1) basic research and key technologies for ultra-precision machine tools, (2) the machining accuracy and efficiency of large-scale machine tools, (3) the reliability and accuracy retention of the whole machine performance, (4) the research and development of common technologies of the advanced additive manufacturing and hybrid manufacturing equipment, and (5) the level of intelligence of high-end machine tools. Furthermore, we propose the key direction of China’s machine tool industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan and the following five to ten years, and put forward some policy measures for the development of machine tool industry in China, including coordinating national science and technology plans with national policy supporting and evaluation systems, and establishing and strengthening the common technology collaborative innovation system for the high-end manufacturing equipment represented by machine tools.

Abstract:Chinese ceramics have a long history and have been deeply recognized by the world after centuries of changes. The current world ceramic industry is diversified. Under this background, there is a huge challenge to the development of Chinese ceramics. The update of materials, the participation of computers in ceramic design, and the demonstration of ingredients all constitute technological factors that cannot be ignored in the development of the ceramic industry. Therefore, this study uses the SWOT analysis method to analyze the development of Chinese ceramics, puts forward its advantages and disadvantages, opportunities, and threats, and under the background of advanced technology, and how to use computer software to demonstrate raw materials and color matching to make Chinese ceramics. The development achieves the goal of self-improvement and then completes the upgrade of its production process and production. Through the research of this study, it is found that the current development of China’s ceramic industry should be good at using SWOT analysis, face up to its shortcomings and pressure from other ceramic production areas in the world, give full play to its advantages, maximize strengths and avoid weaknesses, and use technological innovation, combined with technical factors from other disciplines, to promote ceramic industry design and production capabilities and provide a reference for the current ceramic industry development.

Abstract:Cutting tool coating is a kind of important material in machine tool tools industry and its performance will determine the machining accuracy of CNC machines.The coating material characteristic,the request and the coating technology development of the cutting tool were briefly introduced.The good and bad points of CVD,PVD,PECVD and the Sol-Gel method were analyzed specifically.Unifying the present situation and the trend of the development of the cutting tool coating at home and abroad, it pointed out a new craft should be developed in which both CVD and PVD are unified while vigorously developing any one solely.By this way the domestic coating market will be impelled with a fast development.

Abstract:The cutting experiments of four tools, whose materials were St3N4--based ceramics (FD03),Ti(CN)-based ceramics(FD22), YT15 cemented carbide, and high speed steel(HSS), respectively, to 304 stainless steel were carried out on a lathe. The cutting performances of the tools were evaluated at different machining conditions. SEM and EDX were employed to analyse the wear track morphologies and element diffusion at the interfaces of adhered layers and tools. The results showed that there existed an optimum tooling velocity for those tools except HSS FD03 and YT15 tools presented the excellent wear resistance, which was about 10 times that of FD22, under the condition of a longer machining distance, whereas HSS tool could not work normally due to its bad wear resistance. The wear mechanisms of these tools were analyzed.

Abstract:Microwave dielectric ceramics, owing to their ability to serve as dielectrics in microwave circuits, are widely used in communications, navigation, radar, satellite, and other fields as a key foundational material in modern communications technology.Grounded in an analysis of the current state of microwave dielectric ceramics and their corresponding industry both in China and abroad,this study identifies the challenges faced in the development of these ceramics in China and proposes a strategy for the independent development of microwave dielectric ceramics, encompassing development goals, strategies, key directions, and a development roadmap.The study aims to promote the development of microwave dielectric ceramics, facilitate the shift of the product structure from mid- to high-end products, and achieve breakthroughs in high-performance microwave dielectric ceramics preparation techniques and the independent production of upstream high-purity raw materials. Recommendations for research include strengthening the basic research and application foundations of microwave dielectric ceramics, enhancing innovative research and development in key areas of microwave communications, actively planning for 6G dielectric ceramics, and strengthening the development of the industry’s ecosystem.

Abstract:Based on the tests of cutting tools, the cutting properties of nano-cemented carbide cutting tools and non-nano ones were compared. The results show that nano-cemented carbide can improve the cutting property, increase breakage resistance and prolong cutting life due to the fine grain size. Nano-cemented carbide is an excellent material for the cutting tools in automatic production. It has a bright prospect.
