Abstract:Sulfonyl compounds have attracted considerable interest due to their extensive applications in drug discovery, agricultural, and material science. The access to the assembly of SO2‐containing compounds via the same oxidative‐state introduction of hypervalent sulfur has come to the fore in the recent years. Especially, the transition‐metal‐involved synthesis of hypervalent sulfur compounds is the most effective strategy since SO2 is easy to insert into the metal‐carbon bonds. This review discusses the application of the same oxidation‐state introduction of hypervalent sulfur strategy under the transition‐metal‐catalyzed conditions, and presents according to different metal catalysts and the synthesized diversity hypervalent sulfur‐containing compounds skeletons, including sulfonamides, sulfones, sulfinamides, sulfonyl acids and sulfonyl fluorides.

Abstract:A highly efficient transition-metal-free catalytic system Br-2/NaNO2/H2O has been developed for a robust and economic acid-free aerobic oxidation of sulfides. It is noteworthy that the sulfide function reacts under mild conditions without over-oxidation to sulfone. The role of NaNO2 as an efficient NO equivalent for the activation of molecular oxygen was identified. Under the optimal conditions, a broad range of sulfide substrates were converted into their corresponding sulfoxides in high yields by molecular oxygen. The present catalytic system utilizes cheap and readily available agents as the catalysts, exhibits high selectivity for sulfoxide products and releases only innocuous water as the by-products.

Abstract:A practical and eco-friendly method for the controllable aerobic oxygenation of sulfides by electrochemical catalysis was developed. The switchable preparation of sulfoxides and sulfones was effectively controlled by reaction time, in which both molecular oxygen and water can be used as the oxygen source under catalyst and external oxidant-free conditions. The electrochemical protocol features a broad substrate scope and excellent site selectivity and is successfully applied to the modification of some sulfide-containing pharmaceuticals and their derivatives.

Abstract:Abstract Atomic interface regulation is thought to be an efficient method to adjust the performance of single atom catalysts. Herein, a practical strategy was reported to rationally design single copper atoms coordinated with both sulfur and nitrogen atoms in metal-organic framework derived hierarchically porous carbon (S-Cu-ISA/SNC). The atomic interface configuration of the copper site in S-Cu-ISA/SNC is detected to be an unsymmetrically arranged Cu-S 1 N 3 moiety. The catalyst exhibits excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity with a half-wave potential of 0.918 V vs. RHE. Additionally, through in situ X-ray absorption fine structure tests, we discover that the low-valent Cuprous-S 1 N 3 moiety acts as an active center during the oxygen reduction process. Our discovery provides a universal scheme for the controllable synthesis and performance regulation of single metal atom catalysts toward energy applications.

Abstract:The selective oxo-functionalization of hydrocarbons under mild conditions with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant continues to be a hot topic in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry. Though many oxidation protocols in combination with transition metal salts, enzymes, organometallic catalysts, or organocatalysts have been summarized recently, a review that focuses solely on the metal-free allylic/benzylic oxidation strategies with molecular oxygen is still unavailable. This critical review will summarize recent significant advances achieved in this important field under the scope of green chemistry, which covers the promising applications and brief mechanistic profiles involving three kinds of efficient catalysts, namely N-hydroxyimides, homogeneous/heterogeneous light-sensitive molecules, and heteroatom-doped carbon materials, and concerns the sustainability of these methods, as well as predicts the potential utilization of available but unreported analogous catalysts or catalytic systems in this field. Abstract:The ubiquity of refractory organic matter in aquatic environments necessitates innovative removal strategies. Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation has emerged as an attractive solution, offering high selectivity, enduring efficacy, and anti-interference ability. Among many technologies, sulfite activation, leveraging its cost-effectiveness and lower toxicity compared to conventional persulfates, stands out. Yet, the activation process often relies on transition metals, suffering from low atom utilization. Here we introduce a series of single-atom catalysts (SACs) employing transition metals on g-C 3 N 4 substrates, effectively activating sulfite for acetaminophen degradation. We highlight the superior performance of Fe/CN, which demonstrates a degradation rate constant significantly surpassing those of Ni/CN and Cu/CN. Our investigation into the electronic and spin polarization characteristics of these catalysts reveals their critical role in catalytic efficiency, with oxysulfur radical-mediated reactions predominating. Notably, under visible light, the catalytic activity is enhanced, attributed to an increased generation of oxysulfur radicals and a strengthened electron donation-back donation dynamic. The proximity of Fe/CN's d-band center to the Fermi level, alongside its high spin polarization, is shown to improve sulfite adsorption and reduce the HOMO-LUMO gap, thereby accelerating photo-assisted sulfite activation. This work advances the understanding of SACs in environmental applications and lays the groundwork for future water treatment technologies.

Abstract:Converting the widely present sulfide into elemental sulfur (S 0 ) holds significant environmental protection and resource recycling value. Existing biotechnologies for producing S 0 rely on regulating the O 2 /S or N O3− /S molar ratios, which face challenges of unstable yields under varying conditions. The complexity of sulfide oxidation process, involving numerous enzymes and diverse sulfur forms and valence states, poses a significant difficulty to understanding and advancing research in bio-S 0 production. To facilitate progress in this area, this review re-examines the sulfur oxidation pathways with a focus on the synthesis, storage, and utilization of S 0 , considering both metabolic pathways and catalytic mechanisms. Integrating insights into the enzymes involved, including their structural features, subcellular location, active sites, electron transfer processes, and inter-enzyme synergy, were provided to enhance the understanding of sulfur metabolism mechanisms at a molecular level. Furthermore, several underexplored yet crucial areas were highlighted, including the identification and characterization of sulfur transmembrane transport proteins, the discovery and enrichment of microorganisms with defects in the sulfur oxidation genome (GD-SOMs), and the potential of genetic engineering in constructing GD-SOMs. Addressing these gaps provides valuable guidance for potential S 0 production biotechnological innovations.

Abstract:Organic sulfur compounds have broad applications in biology, medicine and material sciences and intensive efforts have been devoted to developing mild and general C–S bond-forming methods. However, a mild, transition-metal-free, direct C–H bond functionalization method remains elusive. Here, we report the use of an internal oxidant-directing strategy to achieve this goal. The cascade reactions described here show excellent chemoselectivity and a wide substrate scope for both oxyamines and sulfenylation reagents. This study enlarges the synthesis toolbox for preparing structurally diverse sulfilimines under mild conditions.

Abstract:The practical implementation of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is greatly hampered by the low sulfur utilization and limited battery lifespan stemming from the complexity of the sulfur conversion reactions. As a core element in Li-S chemistry, the intrinsic physiochemical properties of sulfur have predominant impacts on the final battery performance, and thus rational engineering of its structure at the molecular level may provide ample possibilities to optimize the sulfur conversion behaviors and hence to promote the commercialization of Li-S technology. This review summarizes the recent advancements in tailoring the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries through engineering the molecular structures of sulfur-providing materials themselves, such as by heteroatom doping, skeleton grafting, and construction of polysulfides-based functional intermediates. Some new-type inorganic sulfur-equivalent active molecules with beneficial electrochemical properties for cathode application are also included. Finally, the perspectives on the challenges of molecular engineering of sulfur for achieving advanced Li-S batteries are discussed.

Abstract:The oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to sulfate in the atmosphere is an important concern in regional air quality, global climate change, and human health. While gas-phase and liquid-phase oxidation of SO2 are widely regarded as important sources of sulfate, the contribution of the heterogeneous oxidation process on particle surfaces is controversial. Recently, this heterogeneous chemistry has been considered to be an important mechanism that is missing in current models to explain sulfate concentrations observed in haze episodes in East Asia. Therefore, the heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 on particles under the conditions of complex air pollution needs to be reassessed. This review summarizes the fundamental understanding of the heterogeneous reactions of SO2 on solid particles such as mineral dust, black carbon, sea salts, organic aerosol, and so on. The factors affecting the mechanism and kinetics of the heterogeneous reactions of SO2, including coexisting components (O3, NO2, H2O2, NH3, and VOCs), reactive sites, surface properties, relative humidity, and illumination, are reviewed. Reactive oxygen species involved in the heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 on particles are discussed. To our knowledge, while previous reviews have appeared on the oxidation of SO2 in the aqueous-phase, this is the first review on the atmospheric heterogeneous reactions of SO2 on the surface of solid particles, which can be of help in understanding the sulfur cycle in the atmosphere and its environmental impacts. A number of recommendations for future research are also presented.

Abstract:Due to the expensive price and the low reserve of noble metals in nature, much attention has been paid to single-atom catalysts (SACs)—especially single-atom noble metal catalysts—owing to their maximum atomic utilization and dispersion. The emergence of SACs greatly decreases the amount of precious metals, improves the catalytic activity, and makes the catalytic process progressively economic and sustainable. However, the most remarkable challenge is the active sites and their stability against migration and aggregation under practical conditions. This review article summarizes the preparation strategies of SACs and their catalytic applications for the oxidation of methane, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the reduction of nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, the perspectives and challenges of SACs in future research and practical applications are proposed. It is envisioned that the results summarized in this review will stimulate the interest of more researchers in developing SACs that are effective in catalyzing the reactions related to the environmental pollution control.

Abstract:Electro-oxidation desulfurization uses reactive oxygen species (ROSs) from water electrolysis to strengthen the transition of sulfur-containing phase, enhancing the separation property between sulfur and fuel. In this process, the rate-determine step is considered as the precise contact between ROSs and sulfur. “Three transfers and two reactions” play critical roles in improving the contact, which are 1) the ROS precursor transfer, 2) transfer of ROSs, 3) transfer of sulfur, 4) the formation of ROSs, 5) the oxidation reaction between sulfur and ROSs. The synergy “three transfers and two reactions” can be improved by regulating the electrode structure and corresponding external field. Therefore, the enhancement of “three transfers and two reactions” can be designed from three aspects: 1) the design of electrolysis cell, 2) the regulation of electrolyte system, and 3) the design of electrode structures. In this review, we briefly introduced the mechanism of electro-oxidation desulfurization, and proposed key steps during electro-desulfurization and summarized development of approaches to enhance those key steps with emphasis on the bottlenecks in different sulfur phases. We also reviewed recent attractive progresses in the design of electrolyte and cells for improving the reactant solubility, which is very critical for heterogeneous reactions to realize large-scale industrial applications.

Abstract:Carbon-sulfur bond cross-coupling has become more and more attractive as an alternative protocol to establish carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Diverse transformations through transition-metal-catalyzed C-S bond activation and cleavage have recently been developed. This review summarizes the advances in transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling via carbon-sulfur bond activation and cleavage since late 2012 as an update of the critical review on the same topic published in early 2013 (Chem. Soc. Rev., 2013, 42, 599-621), which is presented by the categories of organosulfur compounds, that is, thioesters, thioethers including heteroaryl, aryl, vinyl, alkyl, and alkynyl sulfides, ketene dithioacetals, sulfoxides including DMSO, sulfones, sulfonyl chlorides, sulfinates, thiocyanates, sulfonium salts, sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfonates, thiophene-based compounds, and C[double bond, length as m-dash]S functionality-bearing compounds such as thioureas, thioamides, and carbon disulfide, as well as the mechanistic insights. An overview of C-S bond cleavage reactions with stoichiometric transition-metal reagents is briefly given. Theoretical studies on the reactivity of carbon-sulfur bonds by DFT calculations are also discussed.

Abstract:This review explores the pivotal role of sulfur in advancing sustainable carbon-carbon (C–C) coupling reactions. The unique electronic properties of sulfur, as a soft Lewis base with significant mesomeric effect make it an excellent candidate for initiating radical transformations, directing C–H-activation, and facilitating cycloaddition and C–S bond dissociation reactions. These attributes are crucial for developing waste-free methodologies in green chemistry. Our mini-review is focused on existing sulfur-directed C–C coupling techniques, emphasizing their sustainability and comparing state-of-the-art methods with traditional approaches. The review highlights the importance of this research in addressing current challenges in organic synthesis and catalysis. The innovative use of sulfur in photocatalytic, electrochemical and metal-catalyzed processes not only exemplifies significant advancements in the field but also opens new avenues for environmentally friendly chemical processes.
