Abstract:Recent advances in the sulfonylation of C-H bonds with the insertion of sulfur dioxide are summarized. Usually, a sulfur dioxide surrogate, DABCO·(SO2)2, is used, which avoids the utilization of gaseous sulfur dioxide in the transformation. Inorganic sulfites such as sodium metabisulfite are also effective in C(sp3)-H bond sulfonylation. C-H bond sulfonylation under transition metal catalysis or through a radical process has been developed. In some cases, the sulfonylation can be performed under catalyst- and additive-free conditions, or can be facilitated by visible light irradiation. The efficiency is also investigated by merging the radical process and metal catalysis.

Abstract:Recent advances in the sulfonylation of alkenes via the insertion of sulfur dioxide are summarized. The sulfur dioxide surrogate of DABCO<bold></bold>(SO2)(2) or inorganic sulfites is used in the transformation through a radical process. Two strategies for the sulfonylation of alkenes with the insertion of sulfur dioxide have been developed. In most cases, the vicinal difunctionalization of alkenes is initiated by the arylsulfonyl radical generated in situ. Although the sulfonylation of alkenes with the insertion of sulfur dioxide is efficient, the asymmetric versions are still challenging and less to be explored. It is expected that the asymmetric vicinal difunctionalization of alkenes with the insertion of sulfur dioxide will be developed rapidly in the near future.

Abstract:Organosulfur functionalities are ubiquitous in nature, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, materials and flavourants. Historically, these moieties were introduced almost exclusively using ionic chemistry; however, radical-based methods for the installation of sulfur-based functional groups have recently come to the fore. These radical methods have enabled their late-stage introduction into complex molecules, avoiding the need to preserve labile organosulfur moieties through multistep synthetic sequences. Here, we discuss homolytic C–S bond-forming processes, with a particular emphasis on radical substitution approaches to sulfide, disulfide and sulfinyl products, and the use of sulfur dioxide and its surrogates to build sulfonyl products. We also highlight the mechanistic considerations that we hope will guide further development of radical-based strategies compatible with the various organosulfur moieties that feature in modern chemistry.

Abstract:Sulfur oxides are widespread and gaining increasing attention in pharmaceutical and biotechnology discoveries owing to the heightened activities despite sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most important gaseous air pollutants. Considerable research efforts have been devoted to deal with sulfur oxides in a greener and sustainable way. Herein, we report a visible-light-promoted four-component radical-polar crossover tandem cyclization involved twofold insertion of SO2, and the formation of S(IV) and S(IV) centers in one procedure. Various types of functionalized β-sulfonyl sultines were provided from the easy-to-access C(sp2)-H and C(sp3)-H building blocks with high group compatibility under mild and operationally simple conditions. Gram-scale preparation and late-stage transformations demonstrate opportunities to rapidly construct molecular complexity. Mechanistic studies supported a SO2 bi-inserted radical-polar crossover cyclization relay sequence, which allows for a more efficient utilization of SO2 and is also more environmentally friendly.

Understanding How Atomic Sulfur Controls the Selectivity of the Electroreduction of CO2 to Formic Acid on Metallic Cu Surfaces

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 with renewable energy has recently gained increasing attention for its potential to offset its dramatic exponential increase. Sulfur (S)-modified Cu electrodes were reported to selectively reduce CO2 into formic acid and fully quench the original CO2 production on clean Cu surfaces, yet the actual mechanism is still unsolved. To further understand this critical issue, herein, an integrated structure-selectivity investigation on the role of sulfur upon CO2 electroreduction was carried out. DFT calculations in combination with relevant experimental observations from the literature were utilized to identify the existing forms of sulfur and their impact of the reaction selectivity of CO2 to HCOOH under realistic conditions. Interestingly, most residual sulfur atoms were found to exist in relatively unstable forms during the reaction, which plays a dominant role in altering the reaction pathway by enhancing CO2 adsorption. In turn, these strongly adsorbed CO2 stabilize the unstable sulfur, and a synergetic effect between CO2 and S is proposed. These findings unravel a groundbreaking comprehensive understanding for the rational development of highly selective CO2 reduction electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Organic sulfur compounds have broad applications in biology, medicine and material sciences and intensive efforts have been devoted to developing mild and general C–S bond-forming methods. However, a mild, transition-metal-free, direct C–H bond functionalization method remains elusive. Here, we report the use of an internal oxidant-directing strategy to achieve this goal. The cascade reactions described here show excellent chemoselectivity and a wide substrate scope for both oxyamines and sulfenylation reagents. This study enlarges the synthesis toolbox for preparing structurally diverse sulfilimines under mild conditions.

Abstract:A practical and eco-friendly method for the controllable aerobic oxygenation of sulfides by electrochemical catalysis was developed. The switchable preparation of sulfoxides and sulfones was effectively controlled by reaction time, in which both molecular oxygen and water can be used as the oxygen source under catalyst and external oxidant-free conditions. The electrochemical protocol features a broad substrate scope and excellent site selectivity and is successfully applied to the modification of some sulfide-containing pharmaceuticals and their derivatives.

In this method, 2‐sulfonylquinolines with various functional groups can be obtained in good yields under mild reaction conditions. Abstract:AbstractChemical fixation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value‐added organics is regarded as a competitive and viable method in large scale industrial production, during which the catalysts with promoting CO2 activation ability are needed. Herein, we proposed an in‐plane heterostructure strategy to construct Lewis acid–base sites for efficient CO2 activation. By taking ultrathin in‐plane Cu2O/Cu heterostructures as a prototype, we show that Lewis acid‐base sites on heterointerface can facilitate a mixed C and O dual coordination on surface, which not only strengthen CO2 adsorption, but also effectively activate the inert molecules. As revealed by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and quasi in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Lewis acid‐base sites could readily activate CO2 to .CO2− species, which is the key intermediate radical for CO2 fixation. As a result, abundant Lewis acid–base sites endow Cu2O/Cu nanosheets with excellent performances for dimethyl carbonate generation, a high conversion yield of 28 % with nearly 100 % selectivity under mild conditions. This study provides a model structure for CO2 fixation reactions.

Abstract:Recent advances in the sulfonylation reactions by using inorganic sulfites as the source of sulfonyl group are reported. The approaches employing inorganic sulfites as sulfur dioxide surrogates are attractive and promising for the synthesis of sulfonyl compounds since inorganic sulfites are abundant, easily available and cheap. The transformations using inorganic sulfites as the source of sulfonyl group work efficiently, providing diverse sulfonyl compounds including sulfones and sulfonamides. The sulfonylation reactions can be performed under transition metal catalysis or through radical processes under catalyst- and additive-free conditions. In some cases, a photocatalyst is employed under visible-light irradiation to facilitate the transformation. For the sulfur dioxide surrogate of inorganic sulfites, potassium metabisulfite or sodium metabisulfite has been broadly used in various transformations. However, the reactivities of inorganic sulfites in organic reactions still need to be explored.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction to value-added chemicals or fuels offers a promising approach to reduce carbon emission and alleviate energy shortage. Cu-based electrocatalysts have been widely reported capable of reducing CO2 to produce a variety of multicarbon products (e.g., ethylene and ethanol). In this work, we develop sulfur-doped Cu2O electrocatalysts, which instead can electrochemically reduce CO2 to almost exclusively formate. We prove that a dynamic equilibrium of S exists at the Cu2O-electrolyte interface, and S-doped Cu2O undergoes in-situ surface reconstruction to generate active S-adsorbed metallic Cu sites during CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations together with in-situ infrared absorption spectroscopy measurements show that the S-adsorbed metallic Cu surface can not only promote formation of *OCHO intermediate, but also greatly suppress *H and *COOH adsorption, thus facilitating CO2-to-formate conversion during the electrochemical CO2RR.

Abstract:S-formylation of thiols is achieved via an enzymatic process catalysed by formate dehydrogenase enzyme that fixes CO 2 onto substrates, which plays a crucial role in regulating important biological pathways in living organisms. The achievement of this reactivity through a chemical approach could also be advantageous, which would allow the fixation of CO 2 on a diverse range of thiols. Here we demonstrate a chemical process to prepare S-formyl thiols from CO 2 using a mesoionic N-heterocyclic olefin under metal-free conditions. This catalytic reaction is used to diversify a variety of biologically active thiols obtained from natural terpenoids, fatty alcohols, antioxidants, and commercially accessible analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication molecules, as well as preparation of 13 C-labelled formyl coenzyme A. Furthermore, we establish a one-pot S-formylation-olefination process for the synthesis of vinyl sulfides under completely metal-free conditions in the presence of CO 2 . Overall, this study provides a platform to transform thiols and CO 2 into value-added products.
