Abstract:Aerospace engine gear steel, 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel, requires carburizing heat treatment to achieve operational performance. However, predicting the carbon concentration during the vacuum carburizing process poses significant challenges. This paper aims to design and establish a predictive model for the carbon concentration during the vacuum carburizing process of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel. Given the complex phase transformations during the vacuum carburizing process caused by the ultra-high alloy content of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel, vacuum short-term intense carburization and diffusion experiments were designed. Characterization methods such as XRD, scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, EBSD, and FIB+TEM were used to study the microstructure, phase composition, phase constituents, and distribution of element concentrations during the vacuum carburizing process. Subsequently, a carbon concentration distribution calculation model considering carbide changes during the vacuum carburizing process of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel was established. Boundary conditions for carbon absorption during the intense carburization process of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel were proposed, and the relationship between surface carbon concentration and boundary conditions was determined through experiments. Using the method of forward calculation with least squares fitting of experimental data, the diffusion coefficient of carbon in the austenite of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel and the rate of carbon exchange between carbides and the matrix were derived, providing a more precise predictive tool for optimizing the vacuum carburizing process of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel.

Abstract:The case-hardened 14Cr14Co13Mo4 martensitic stainless steel is carburized by low-pressure carburizing method. Plenty of second phase particles appear in the case layer. C concentration is measured by Carbon and Sulphur analyzer. Precipitation of second phase induces the improvement of C concentration in case layer. XRD results indicate that the second phase is composed of M23C6, M6C, M7C3 and intermetallic χ phase. EBSD results show layering distribution of carbides varied with C concentration. Phase diagram of 14Cr14Co13Mo4 steel is calculated by Thermo-Calc software to explain the phase transformation during the carburizing. Low-pressure carburizing process is simulated by DICTRA software to explain C diffusion in 14Cr14Co13Mo4 steel. The simulated C concentration profile agrees well with the experimental measured carbon values, which means that low-pressure carburizing parameters can be optimized by this modeling method.

Abstract:Effects of CO2 percentage, temperature and pressure on thickness of compound laye of 42CrMo steel for the process of plasma nitrocarburising were investigated. Microstructure and properties of the compound layer treated with the optimal process parameters were analyzed. The results show that the optimal process parameters of plasma nitrocarburising are N2 : H2 = 1 : 1, the volume fraction of CO2 is 3%, P =500 Pa, T=560 ℃, t =2 h, and 2% RE. The compound layer is mainly consist of γ′-Fe4N phase and FeC phase after plasma nitrocarburising, and the hardness and wear resistance are significantly improved.
Experimental Study and Computer Simulation on Multicomponent Diffusion in Multiphase Dispersions During Solid Carburizing of HP40Nb and KHR45A Alloys

Abstract:To simulate solid carburizing processes of HP40Nb and KHR45A alloys at 1273 K and 1373 K (1000 °C and 1100 °C), Thermo-Calc (Thermo-Calc Software, Inc., Stockholm, Sweden) and DICTRA (Thermo-Calc Software, Inc.) software analyses were performed. A model to treat multicomponent diffusion in multiphase dispersions was applied, where carbides are assumed to be distributed in face-centered cubic matrix and diffusion only occurs in the matrix. The time-dependent carbon flux determined by weight gain measurement was used as boundary condition in diffusion simulations. The calculated carbides are NbC, M 23 C 6 , and M 7 C 3 (“M” stands for metal atoms), where M 23 C 6 first precipitates, then M 7 C 3 appears as carbon increases, and NbC covers the largest area of carbon content. The results show that carburization resistance is much better for KHR45A than HP40Nb due to the addition of elements (Si, Cr, Ni, and Nb). Microhardness measurements were also conducted to obtain the carburized case depths, and the results agreed well with the predicted calculations.
Pre-Coated Fe–Ni Film to Promote Low-Pressure Carburizing of 14cr14co13mo4 Steel

Abstract:Case-hardening 14Cr14Co13Mo4 martensitic stainless steel needs to be carburized to improve surface performance. Low-pressure carburization has the benefit of having oxidation-free production and being ecofriendly. However, compared with the low-pressure carburization of the low-alloy steel, low-pressure carburization of the 14Cr14Co13Mo4 steel consumes more time and has a risk of network carbides. In order to promote carbon diffusion and avoid network carbide, Fe–Ni films with various thickness were electrodeposited on the 14Cr14Co13Mo4 steel prior to low-pressure carburization. The experimental results show that, under the same carburizing conditions, the surface carbon content decreases and the carburized layer increases with the increase of Fe–Ni film thickness. After the hardening heat treatment, the effective case depth (ECD) of the sample coated with 6.0 μm Fe–Ni film was increased by 29% compared to that of the uncoated sample. The morphology of carbides was a strip-shaped, discontinuous network distribution in the uncoated sample, while in the Fe–Ni coated samples, the carbides changed to a globular, uniformly dispersed distribution. The effect of Fe–Ni film on the low-pressure carburizing of steel is explained by the simulation of the carbon diffusion using DICTRA software. The Fe–Ni films reduce the steel surface carbon content in each boost stage of low-pressure carburizing and release carbon atoms in every diffusion stage. Through this adjustment mechanism, the steel surface carbon content can be reduced and carburized layer growth can be promoted.

Abstract:As a low-carbon alloy steel, 20Cr2Ni4A steel has an excellent mechanical properties. It has been used for producing heavy-duty gears, which require good wear and fatigue resistance. The vacuum carburizing process can improve the quality of gears and extend the service life. In this article, a complete heat-treatment process for 20Cr2Ni4A, with carburizing, tempering, quenching and cryogenic steps involved, was proposed. A numerical method was employed to design the carburizing step. The carburized samples were characterized by analysis of carbon profile, surface-retained austenite content, microstructure, and hardness profile. A good microstructure was obtained with acicular-tempered martensite, less-retained austenite, fine granular-dispersed carbides, and was oxide free. The final surface hardness was 64.2HRC, and the case depth was 0.86 mm, which meet the requirements of products. The relationships among process, performance, and microstructure were investigated to understand the inner connection.

Abstract:The microstructural evolution and phase transformation mechanism in 18Cr2Ni4WA carburized steel during high‐temperature tempering was investigated using a thermodynamic model. The experimental results demonstrated that the retained austenite in the matrix decreased from the surface to the core, and martensite transformed from acicular to lath‐type. Furthermore, the hardness distribution of the carburized layer increased initially, and then decreased. Based on thermodynamic calculations, the driving forces for the decomposition of martensite decomposition and nucleation of cementite in martensite were larger than those for the decomposition of austenite during tempering. Furthermore, cementite preferentially precipitated in martensite. The driving force for the overall phase transformation of the decomposition of the retained austenite was negative, and the driving force for the nucleation of cementite in the low‐carbon retained austenite was positive, indicating that cementite could nucleate only in high‐carbon retained austenite. The low‐carbon retained austenite transformed into secondary martensite on cooling after the tempering process while the driving force gradually increased. The decomposition of the initial quenched martensite during the tempering process led to a decrease in the overall hardness of the carburized layer. The secondary martensite obtained from the retained austenite contributed to the increase in the surface hardness.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Microstructure, Adhesion and Tribological Properties of CrN/CrTiAlSiN/WCrTiAlN Multilayer Coatings Deposited on Nitrocarburized AISI 4140 Steel

Abstract:In this study, the CrN/CrTiAlSiN/WCrAlTiN multilayer coatings have been deposited on polished AISI 4140 steel substrates (named only-coating specimens) and plasma nitrocarburized specimens (named duplex specimens) by cathodic multi-arc evaporation. The microstructure and composition of the specimens were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. The micro-hardness and nano-hardness were measured by Vickers hardness tester and nanoindentation, respectively. The adhesion and tribological behavior were evaluated using the Rockwell-C indentation and micro-tribometer, respectively. The results showed that plasma nitrocarburizing gives rise to a modified layer due to diffusion of nitrogen/carbon, leading to surface hardness, H, of 13.0 GPa, compared to H = 6.8 GPa for the untreated steel. Notably, it shows that the super-hardness (11 = 47.9 GPa) multilayer coating consists of a bottom CrN layer, a middle CrTiAlSiN layer, and an outmost superlattice WCrTiAlN layer. The nitrocarburizing pretreatment considerably improves adhesion strength of the duplex specimen compared with the only-coating one. The improved mechanical and tribological properties of the duplex specimen are mainly related to the gradient in the hardness profile of the diffusion nitrocarburized layer.

Abstract:During case hardening of precision transmission components, distortion reduction and residual stress control are crucial to achieve high efficiency and reliable service performance. This work studied the effects of carbon content distribution on the distortion behavior during a carburizing and quenching treatment of an M50NiL steel. A multi-physics model integrated into commercial software DEFORM-3D was developed to predict the temperature, microstructure, stress and carbon content distribution. The kinetic parameters for carburizing and quenching were modified by fitting the experimental data. The calculated results showed that quenching distortion increased with the increase in case depth and surface carbon concentration. The quenching distortion of the M50NiL steel C-ring increased by 115% with the total case depth increasing from 0.93 mm to 2.35 mm. On the other hand, as the surface carbon concentration increased, the residual stress on the part surface transformed from compressive stress to tensile stress.

Abstract:During the hot pressing of pure titanium and different carbon steels in a temperature range of θ = 950 – 1050 ∘C, a compound layer up to dL ≈ 10 m thick is formed at the titanium–steel interface. With a higher carbon content of the used steel, the layer thickness increases. The carbon concentration within the layer is in the range of stoichiometry for TiC. Apart from TiC, no other phases can be detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements inside the formed layer. The calculation of the activation energy for the TiC layer formation is Q = 126.5 – 136.7 kJ/mol and is independent of the carbon content of the steel. The resulting microstructure has a grain size gradient, wherein the mechanical properties, such as hardness and Young`s modulus, are almost constant. Statistical analysis using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) indicates that the carbon content of the steel has the most significant influence on layer thickness, followed by annealing temperature and annealing time. By selecting the appropriate carbon steel and the subsequent removal of the steel, it is possible to produce targeted TiC layers on titanium substrates, which holds enormous potential for this material in wear-intensive applications.

Abstract:In the present research, the cooling phase transformation characteristics and microstructures of a Co- and Al-containing high-carbon steel were investigated under slow cooling rates (0.02–2.0 °C/s). In addition, by means of a Thermecmastor thermal simulator, the phase transformation temperatures were measured, and the corresponding continuous cooling transformation (CCT) curves were plotted. It was found that an extremely fine, fully pearlitic structure with an interlamellar spacing of 45 nm, and a hardness of 425 HV1 (Vickers hardness under 1 kg load) were obtained at a cooling rate of 0.1 °C/s. The addition of Co and Al accelerated the pearlitic reaction and reduced the interlamellar spacing by increasing the free energy of phase transformation, thus a fully pearlitic structure was obtained at slow cooling rates.

Abstract:Surface carburized steels are extensively utilized in gears due to their exceptional properties. The quality of the carburized layer is crucial in enhancing the contact fatigue and wear resistance of the components. However, the conventional carburizing method takes a long time and induces a carbon emissions problem. In this study, the 18Cr2Ni4WA steel was double tempered (650 °C/4 h) after carburizing at 930 °C and 950 °C. The microstructural evolution, carbide precipitation, and mechanical properties of different carburized layers were analyzed. The results showed that increasing the carburizing temperature can control the microstructure of the carburized layer while reducing the carburizing time by over 60%. The high carbon content improves the strength of the carburized materials at 950 °C, and the inhibition of dislocation motion and grain boundary by the precipitation of more carbides ensures the stability of grain size, maintaining the strength of the materials. The carburized specimens at 950 °C showed an excellent combination of strength and plasticity in different carburized layers due to the variations in solid solution strengthening, dislocation strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and grain boundary strengthening induced by carbon atoms. This study holds significant reference for the advancement of modern steels carburized at high temperatures in a short time.

Abstract:The microstructure and crystallographic features of a semi-austenitic precipitation hardening steel PH 15-7Mo during solution treatment, roddrawing and aging were investigated by means of optical microscope, X-ray diffraction analyzer and transmission electron microscope. It was found that the microstructure of the steel was consist of dominant austenite, small amount of martensite and 10-15 vol.% delta-ferrite after solution treatment at 1050 degrees C followed by cooling in water at room temperature. The austenite transformed into lath martensite during tensile roddrawing about 60% deforming companied with some coherent fine beta-NiAl particles precipitated within martensite. With higher aging temperature and longer holding time, tiny carbide M23C6 particles precipitated from martensite, which kept the cubic-cubic orientation relationship (OR) with austenite and G-T OR with martensite which is different with all the reported orientations. The OR between tiny carbide M23C6 particles G-T OR with martensite was discussed in terms of crystallography of phase transformations. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A multiphase microstructure composed of nano-scaled bainite, martensite, undissolved spherical carbides and retained austenite was obtained on the top surface of carburizing 23Cr2Ni2Si1Mo steel after low-temperature austempered at 200°C, with a dual-phase microstructure of fine martensite lath and carbon-enriched retained austenite in the center of steel. As compared with the conventional oil quenching and tempering (OQ) state, the low-temperature austempering specimens showed a higher surface residual compressive stress and a thicker residual compressive stress layer, and the wear resistance of the top surface of specimens austempered for 4h, 8h and 24h was increased 40%, 58% and 12%, respectively. Moreover, the impact toughness of the center of these austempered specimens is also improved 20.8–33.3% as compared with that of the OQ specimen. Then, it can be deduced that applying the low-temperature austempering treatment for manufacturing carburizing-steel part is beneficial to improving its service performance for the better stress condition, higher wear resistance and higher interior toughness.

Abstract:This study presents research results concerning the vacuum carburizing of four steel grades, specifically conforming to European standards 1.7243, 1.6587, 1.5920, and 1.3532. The experimental specimens exhibited variations primarily in nickel content, ranging from 0 to approximately 3.8 wt. %. As a comparative reference, gas carburizing was also conducted on the 1.3532 grade, which had the highest nickel content. Comprehensive structural analysis was carried out on the resultant carburized layers using a variety of techniques, such as optical and electron scanning, transmission microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Additionally, mechanical properties such as hardness and fatigue strength were assessed. Fatigue strength evaluation was performed on un-notched samples having a circular cross-section with a diameter of 12 mm. Testing was executed via a three-point bending setup subjected to sinusoidally varying stresses ranging from 0 to maximum stress levels. The carburized layers produced had effective thicknesses from approximately 0.8 to 1.4 mm, surface hardness levels in the range of 600 to 700 HV, and estimated retained austenite contents from 10 to 20 vol%. The observed fatigue strength values for the layers varied within the range from 1000 to 1350 MPa. It was found that changing the processing method from gas carburizing, which induced internal oxidation phenomena, to vacuum carburizing improved the fatigue properties to a greater extent than increasing the nickel content of the steel.

Abstract:The microstructural evolution and hardening mechanism caused by carburizing heat treatment must be determined to improve the in-service functional performance of components used in advanced equipment for aerospace and other industrial applications. Carburizing heat treatment causes the microstructure to exhibit heterogeneous characteristics in the depth direction. In this study, the effects of carburizing heat treatment on the microstructure and hardening mechanism of 18CrNiMo7-6 steel were investigated. The experimental results show the residual austenite (RA) content in the carburized surface reached 56.2% and the RA content in the core was 0.1% after carburizing heat treatment. The kernel average misorientation (KAM) value, grain size, low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) content, and dislocation density caused by carburizing heat treatment increased with increasing depth. After the carburizing heat treatment, considerable grain refinement occurred, and the minimum grain size of the carburized surface was 3.19 μm. The microhardness of the carburized layer first rose and then reduced, achieving a maximum of 686 HV, which was 57.7% higher than that of the quenching and tempering (uncarburized) samples. In addition, it was found that grain boundary and solution strengthening played a prominent position in the hardening mechanism of the carburized layer. This study has deepened the current understanding of the hardening mechanism of 18CrNiMo7-6 steel during carburizing heat treatment.

Abstract:By means of the measurement of carbon concentration gradient in the carburized layer, the microstructure observation after heat treatment, and the detection of hardness distribution, the effect of carbon concentration gradient on the multi-level composite microstructure and hardness of M50NiL steel after vacuum isothermal quenching was studied. Results show that from the surface to the core of the steel, the carbon concentration gradually decreased from 1.42 to 0.13%. Referring to the definition of carbon steel, the carburized layer was divided into ultra-high carbon zone, high carbon zone, medium carbon zone, and medium-low carbon zone. As the depth from the surface increased, the morphology of residual austenite after isothermal quenching changed from blocky to film. In the ultra-high carbon zone, the lower bainite carbides did not spheroidize after growing up during tempering at 545 °C and still maintained the parallel arrangement. Due to the influence of carbon concentration, the hardness of the surface layer after isothermal quenching mainly depends on the transformation degree of residual austenite and the amount of pre-formed martensite. Through improving the microstructure of the carburized layer, the impact property of M50NiL steel increased significantly.

Abstract:Two different heat treatment processes were conducted to investigate the impact of tempering , quenching and cryogenic process on microstructure and properties of 18Cr2Ni4WA steel after vacuum carburizing .The result shows that after high temperature tempering , quenching , cryogenic and low temperature tempering , the depth of carburized layer is almost not affected and the content of retained austenite on surface is reduced significantly .After 680 ℃×5 h twice tempering +860 ℃ quenching +-115 .3 ℃cryogenic treatment +160 ℃tempering, the surface hardness and the depth of carburized layer is 64.2 HRC and is 0.86 mm respectively, and the microstructure of the carburized layer is composed of acicular tempered martensite , less refined martensite and fine granular dispersed carbides , the microstructure of the core is lath-like tempered martensite , which results in higher surface hardness and good combination of strength and toughness of the core .

Abstract:The microstructure evolution of 15MnNi4Mo steel after carburizing was studied, and the hardening mechanism of carburized layer under the influence of sub-temperature quenching was discussed. The results show that due to the high Ni content, the high-temperature tempering process of 15MnNi4Mo is slow, and the carburizing layer evolution behavior is mainly the decomposition of martensite and retained austenite, while the heart region is mainly the decomposition of M/A island. The sub-temperature quenching retains some of the carbides after tempering which increases the hardness (60HV) of the carburized layer by reducing the retained austenite, refining the substructures of martensite and accumulating dislocations around carbides.
