Abstract:The monitoring of current in real time is crucial for the maintenance of the power grid system. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel fiber optic current sensor based on resonance frequency difference detection using a single-mode fiber ring resonator (FRR). The sensing system utilizes the Faraday effect, which behaves as the resonance frequency difference between the two circularly polarized lightwaves in the FRR. By measuring this resonance frequency difference, the current can be accurately determined. The current sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 41.53 Hz/A within a measurement range of 0-400 A, with a relative error of less than 0.2 %, and an optimized current accuracy of 0.5 A. The main limiting factor affecting the noise performance of the system is analyzed. This research provides new insights into research and low-cost applications in the field of current sensing.

Abstract:Measurement accuracy is essential for the all-fiber optic current sensor. Angle errors of axis alignment in the fusion processing affect the measurement accuracy with different modulation and demodulation methods. The relationship between observed and theoretical values has been analyzed with sinusoidal modulation and square modulation, respectively. The error and the error tolerance are computed with different demodulations based on the application of measurement and protection. The four demodulations are ordered based on the complexity and the error tolerance requirement. The open-loop demodulation scheme of the all-fiber optic current sensor can be applied for the protection application because it can be easily achieved. For the measurement application, the closed-loop feedback demodulation is recommended when the current is to be measured significantly; Otherwise, the harmonic division demodulation could meet the requirements of the system.

Abstract:A fiber-optic current sensor implementing the differential measurement to measure currents up to tens of megaamperes is proposed. The sensor is based on a reflective interferometer with a sensing coil made up of two spliced highly birefringent spun fibers with different sensitivities and wound in opposite directions around the current conductor. Mode coupling occurring at the splice has been shown to disturb the output signal, requiring modifications to the signal processing. The 50 MA range sensor has been experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:An advanced fiber optic current sensor (FOCS) is proposed based on recirculating fiber loop architecture for significantly enhancing the current sensitivity. The recirculating loop is constructed by a 2X2 optical switch and the standard single mode fiber (SSMF) is used as the sensing head. The proposed FOCS is coupler-free with low insertion loss which results in a significantly improved current sensitivity. We experimentally obtained a sensitivity of 11.5 degrees/A for 1-Km SSMF FOCS and a sensitivity of 21.2 degrees/A for 500-m SSMF FOCS, both of which have been enhanced by more than ten times. The flexible switch control of recirculating can support the FOCS to work for different current scenarios with the same system and thus reconfigurable operation of the FOCS has been achieved. The significantly enhanced high sensitivity with reconfigurable operation capability makes the proposed FOCS a promising method for practical applications.

Abstract:A novel fiber optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) current sensor is developed based on magnetic fluid as the medium in F-P interference cavity. A signal demodulation method based on slanted fiber Bragg grating (FBG) wavelength measurement system is proposed. Theory and principle of electromagnetic-controlled refractive index of the magnetic fluid is described, as well as the structure of the sensor system. Preliminary experiments are carried out, and the results indicate that there is a fairly good linearity of the measurement characteristic. The thickness of magnetic fluid film and initial concentration will affect the measurement results.

Abstract:A fiber optic current sensor based on a polarization-rotated reflected interferometer has been constructed. A special spun highly birefringent fiber is designed and achieved for the sensor by heating and spinning commercial linearly birefringent fiber. In contrast with conventional fibers, the fiber integrates a function of a quarter wave plate. Particularly, fabricating and working principle of the current sensor head using the fiber are expounded. The sensor achieves an accuracy with 0.5% and good linearity shown in temperature dependence (a temperature drift of 0.008%/degrees C) over a temperature range 40 degrees C-70 degrees C. Further, under simple temperature compensation, the sensor accuracy is within +/- 0.1% over in a wide range of current and temperature ranges.

Abstract:Electric current sensors are widely utilized in high-frequency power and electronic circuits which spread over numerous industries. Here, a current sensor based on the high-Q whispering gallery mode optical capillary microresonator filled with Terfenol-D nanoparticles is experimentally demonstrated. The device shows a peak AC current sensitivity of 5.285 μA Hz -1/2 with a corresponding high accuracy of 0.0009%. It possesses a wide detection frequency bandwidth of approximately 12 MHz and exhibits good linearity, enabling for partial discharge signals detection.

Abstract:A fiber optic current sensor utilizing orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam is proposed in this paper. The superposition principle of composite OAM beam is deduced, and the current sensing process is derived by Jones matrix. The current is measured by detecting the rotation angle of petal-like patterns formed after the composite OAM beam through the polarizer. The reflective structure of the sensor doubles the rotation angle, which improves the measuring sensitivity and the reciprocity of the system. Through simulation analysis, we verified that the rotation angle changes linearly with the increase of current, and the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 0.1254°/A. Finally, on this basis, the angle recognition method is optimized, and the final measurement error is less than ±0.2% in the range of 50A-1500A. .

Abstract:An innovative dual-channel fiber optic current sensor (FOCS) based on two-carrier modulation technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The system enhances standard reflective FOCS by incorporating an additional sensing channel, thereby effectively using key optical devices without incurring significant additional costs. By rationally designing the relationship between the frequencies of the two carriers and the transmission fiber length of two channels, simultaneous current measurement without crosstalk can be achieved. The experimental results demonstrate that the current measurements from both channels are highly independent and exhibit a linear variation with respect to the applied current, with an coefficient exceeding 0.9999. In the experiment, the two channels have a maximum current sensitivity of 1.1 and 0.8 mV/A, respectively. In addition, the system has excellent long-term stability, as evidenced by signal fluctuations of 2.68 and V for the two channels over a 30-min duration. The proposed scheme offers a promising solution for advancing the development of multichannel current measurement and holds potential for practical applications in the power grid.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally investigated a compact and ultra-sensitive integrated photonic current sensor based on a silicon ring resonator in this paper. The current flowing through the integrated resistive TiN heater produces the Joule's heat and changes the temperature, which results in the change of refractive index and physical dimensions of the ring. An optical spectrum analyzer is used to monitor the resonant wavelength shift of the ring. The experiment results show that the sensor achieves an ultra-high sensitivity of 6.8. x. 10(4) nm A(-2) and good linearity between real-time current and wavelength shift in the test range of 0-10 mA.

Abstract:Abstract A novel optical current sensor based on microfiber knot resonator (MKR) with magnetic fluid (MF) as cladding is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. The operating principles, package technique and mounting method of the proposed sensor are introduced in detail. Moreover, the performances of the proposed sensor are demonstrated experimentally by detecting sinusoidal current with 50Hz and pulse current signals with rising time of 2.5μs respectively. The results have shown that the relationship between the sensor responding and the applied current intensity is approximately linear and the minimal detectable current is 10 Amps with SNR (Signal-to-noise ratio) as 3.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a novel all-fiber current sensor using ordinary silica fiber. The sensor employs a fiber solenoid as a current sensor head, which improves the current sensitivity by allowing optical signals to traverse the sensor head repeatedly. Abstract:Various applications of fiber optic current sensor are explored now. In this paper a new full-optical current sensor is designed. The fiber-optic current sensor is based on the Faraday rotation effect, and moreover, in this paper the mechanism of Faraday rotation effect of cylinder fiber model is explained. In the present research experimental platform has been set up. And then the Comsol software has been used to simulate the system' transmission field, which could be achieved by calculating the transmittance of light propagating through POF. Finally the results obtained respectively by traditional structure and new structure are compared. The results may be helpful for the further research on the fiber optic current sensor.

Abstract:A sensing measurement scheme based on the optical fiber coupling optical driving converting probe is proposed. Using the optical feedback stabilized 5mW LD as illuminant, the optical driving distance is 100m. The power of designed low-consumption temperature-sensitive sensor probe is small to 2.2mW. The design idea of this new sensor and the key technology of realizing optical driving are introduced in this paper. Experimental results show that the temperature sensor with high resolution can resist high-voltage and electromagnetic interference, and has high sensitivity and precision with 1000Hz/°C.

Abstract:In this paper, we have proposed and experimentally demonstrated an optical fiber current sensing system based on optical carrier microwave interferometry (OCMI) technology and the virtual Vernier effect. The OCMI pattern in the electric domain is formed by the interference of optical carrier microwave signals reflected by two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). One FBG is attached to a giant magnetostrictive material (GMM): Terfenol-D as the sensing element, while the other one serves as the reference element. Current changes will cause axial tensile strain of the sensing FBG on the material and thus the wavelength of the sensing FBG will change, which will lead to a shift of the frequency of resonance dip of the OCMI pattern in the electric domain. By monitoring the frequency shift, the current change can be demodulated. Two FBGs with different distances (∼ 27 cm and ∼ 5 m) are employed in the experiment, which results in different FSRs and thus sensitivities of the proposed system. In the experiment, we obtained current sensitivities of −111.21 MHz/A and −2.65 MHz/A with increasing current when distances between two FBGs are ∼ 27 cm and ∼ 5 m, respectively. To further increase the sensitivity and improve the flexibility of the proposed system, the virtual Vernier effect is incorporated for the sensing system with FBGs’ distance of ∼ 5 m, without requiring an actual reference interferometer. When increasing current, the sensitivities are 19.82 MHz/A and 32.70 MHz/A by utilizing the virtual fundamental Vernier effect (FVE) and the virtual 1st-order harmonic Vernier effect (HVE), respectively. The proposed sensing system offers advantages such as tunable sensitivity, good repeatability and stability, high resolution, simple structure, and so on.

Abstract:The measurement accuracy of fiber optic current sensors (FOCS) is closely related to the stability of Verdet constant and the polarization characteristic of the sensing coils, which are easily influenced by environmental disturbance. In this article, a self-compensative fiber optic current sensor (SFOCS) with two sensing heads made of single mode fibers is designed and demonstrated. Utilizing sensing and compensative unit as well as a close-loop system, variation of Verdet constant and birefringence is compensated. We numerically calculate the output signal of SFOCS with temperature varying from $-\text{30}^{\circ }$C to 75 $^{\circ }$C and simulate the situation where SFOCS is affected by the circular and linear birefringence from the environment, and the results confirm that well designed SFOCS is completely temperature- and vibration-independent. Additionally, in order to achieve the ideal compensation, $\mathcal {H}$ function of SFOCS related to birefringence and the current to be measured is introduced and deeply studied. Moreover, we discuss the measurement errors of SFOCS caused by the difference between two sensing heads such as the coupling ratio, the linear and circular birefringence, and we calculate the acceptable error range, within which SFOCS can meet the class 0.2 standard.
