Abstract:Measurement accuracy is essential for the all-fiber optic current sensor. Angle errors of axis alignment in the fusion processing affect the measurement accuracy with different modulation and demodulation methods. The relationship between observed and theoretical values has been analyzed with sinusoidal modulation and square modulation, respectively. The error and the error tolerance are computed with different demodulations based on the application of measurement and protection. The four demodulations are ordered based on the complexity and the error tolerance requirement. The open-loop demodulation scheme of the all-fiber optic current sensor can be applied for the protection application because it can be easily achieved. For the measurement application, the closed-loop feedback demodulation is recommended when the current is to be measured significantly; Otherwise, the harmonic division demodulation could meet the requirements of the system.

Abstract:A sensing measurement scheme based on the optical fiber coupling optical driving converting probe is proposed. Using the optical feedback stabilized 5mW LD as illuminant, the optical driving distance is 100m. The power of designed low-consumption temperature-sensitive sensor probe is small to 2.2mW. The design idea of this new sensor and the key technology of realizing optical driving are introduced in this paper. Experimental results show that the temperature sensor with high resolution can resist high-voltage and electromagnetic interference, and has high sensitivity and precision with 1000Hz/°C.

Abstract:A novel fiber-optic current sensing element is proposed to enhance sensor performance using spun high-birefringence fibers. Such element includes three fiber sections. Two terminal sections with a varying spin rate along the fiber are utilized to replace the fiber quarter-wave plates, each converting the light polarization state from linear to circular and vice versa. The middle section with a uniform spin rate is utilized as the current sensing fiber that maintains the circular polarization state during the light propagation. The fiber is also wound into a special geometric structure so that the Sagnac phase shift can be inherently eliminated, and the sensing result does not depend on the position of the current conductor. The evolution of the light polarization state was analyzed using coupled-mode theory with different polarization state incidents in the sensing fiber. A sensor scheme based on this type of spun fiber is also proposed.

Abstract:A fiber-optic current sensor implementing the differential measurement to measure currents up to tens of megaamperes is proposed. The sensor is based on a reflective interferometer with a sensing coil made up of two spliced highly birefringent spun fibers with different sensitivities and wound in opposite directions around the current conductor. Mode coupling occurring at the splice has been shown to disturb the output signal, requiring modifications to the signal processing. The 50 MA range sensor has been experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:A fiber optic current sensor utilizing orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam is proposed in this paper. The superposition principle of composite OAM beam is deduced, and the current sensing process is derived by Jones matrix. The current is measured by detecting the rotation angle of petal-like patterns formed after the composite OAM beam through the polarizer. The reflective structure of the sensor doubles the rotation angle, which improves the measuring sensitivity and the reciprocity of the system. Through simulation analysis, we verified that the rotation angle changes linearly with the increase of current, and the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 0.1254°/A. Finally, on this basis, the angle recognition method is optimized, and the final measurement error is less than ±0.2% in the range of 50A-1500A. .

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally investigated a compact and ultra-sensitive integrated photonic current sensor based on a silicon ring resonator in this paper. The current flowing through the integrated resistive TiN heater produces the Joule's heat and changes the temperature, which results in the change of refractive index and physical dimensions of the ring. An optical spectrum analyzer is used to monitor the resonant wavelength shift of the ring. The experiment results show that the sensor achieves an ultra-high sensitivity of 6.8. x. 10(4) nm A(-2) and good linearity between real-time current and wavelength shift in the test range of 0-10 mA.

Abstract:A heterodyne optical fiber current sensor based on a nanowire-grid (NWG) in-line polarizer is proposed. The NWG is a one-dimension Au grating fabricated on a fiber tip by focused ion beam machining. Because the grating pitch is far smaller than the wavelength of the incident light, it works like an in-line transflective fiber polarizer with both the transmission and reflection light power being measured simultaneously. Based on this unique feature, an all-fiber optical current sensor is demonstrated. The heterodyne measurement makes it withstand light power variations showing good sensing stability. As an all-fiber sensor, discrete and bulky optical components are saved, making it more reliable in practical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the transverse electro-optic effect of lithium niobate crystal, combined with polarizers and Faraday rotator, this paper presents a collinear closed-loop fiber optic current transformer with spatial non-reciprocity modulation method, and the feasibility of the scheme is verified by both the theoretical and experimental evidences. The detection scheme avoids the limitation of the transition time of the sensing fiber coil on the phase modulation frequency, improves the sensitivity and stability of the system, and reduces the volume and cost of fiber optic current transformer. The sawtooth wave modulation scheme is adopted to realize phase bias modulation and feedback modulation through phase shift of sawtooth wave to achieve closed-loop detection effect, which enhances the signal to noise ratio and simplifies demodulation mode. The experimental results show that the current ratio errors measured at room temperature range from 1% to 120% of rated current meet the requirements of national standard GB/T 20840.8-2007 and reach the accuracy level of 0.2S. The temperature stability of the current transformer is also tested, and the ratio error measured at the rated current does not exceed ±0.2% in the range of -30 °C to 50 °C.

Abstract:Currently, in the modern power industry, it is still a great challenge to achieve high sensitivity and uninterrupted-online measurement of large current on the high voltage gridlines. At present, the fiber grating current sensors based on giant magnetostrictive material used in the modern power industry to achieve uninterrupted-online measurement of large currents on high voltage grid lines is a better method, but the sensitivity of this current sensor is relatively low, therefore, it is key to improve the sensitivity of this current sensor. Here we show a sensitivity-enhanced fiber grating current sensor based on giant magnetostrictive material (in the following, simply referred to as the sensitivity-enhanced fiber grating current sensor) that is able to achieve high sensitivity and uninterrupted-online measurement of large currents by means of pressurizing the giant magnetostrictive material. Sampling the power frequency sinusoidal alternating current signals with the amplitudes of 107, 157 and 262 A respectively, based on realistic factors, for the sensitivity-enhanced current sensor, the sensitivities, compared with that of the traditional fiber grating current sensor based on giant magnetostrictive material (in the following, simply referred to as the traditional fiber grating current sensor), were respectively enhanced by 268.96%, 135.72% and 71.57%. Thus the sensitivity-enhanced fiber grating current sensor allows us to solve the issue of high sensitivity and uninterrupted-online measurement of large currents that have been plaguing the power industry in a very simple and low-cost way.

Abstract:An innovative dual-channel fiber optic current sensor (FOCS) based on two-carrier modulation technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The system enhances standard reflective FOCS by incorporating an additional sensing channel, thereby effectively using key optical devices without incurring significant additional costs. By rationally designing the relationship between the frequencies of the two carriers and the transmission fiber length of two channels, simultaneous current measurement without crosstalk can be achieved. The experimental results demonstrate that the current measurements from both channels are highly independent and exhibit a linear variation with respect to the applied current, with an coefficient exceeding 0.9999. In the experiment, the two channels have a maximum current sensitivity of 1.1 and 0.8 mV/A, respectively. In addition, the system has excellent long-term stability, as evidenced by signal fluctuations of 2.68 and V for the two channels over a 30-min duration. The proposed scheme offers a promising solution for advancing the development of multichannel current measurement and holds potential for practical applications in the power grid.

Abstract:In order to meet the demand for direct current (DC) current measurements in industrial production, a new type of fiber optic DC current sensor, combining thin copper wire and fiber optic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), is reported. FPI is a sandwich structure formed by splicing a single-mode fiber (SMF) and a quartz capillary, with a cavity length of approximately 200 μm. The copper wire, with a length of 3.2 cm and a diameter of 1 mm, is attached to the FPI to form the sensor. Due to the excellent thermal conductivity of copper, the results showed that the sensor increased the sensitivity from 4.1 pm/°C to 11 pm/°C. After applying direct current to the sensor, a large quantity of heat generated by the copper wire was absorbed by the FPI, resulting in a significant shift in the resonant wavelength of FPI, which can indirectly measure the current. Three current experiments were performed, and parabolic curves have been used in fitting of the Dip wavelength and the square of the current. The results provide high correlation coefficients with values exceeding 0.99. Therefore, this curve may be used to measure the square of the current, further obtaining the current. In summary, the sensor is compact and durable, easy to manufacture, and provides high correlation coefficients, providing an alternative for measuring DC current.

Abstract:Fiber optic current sensors (FOCS) based on Faraday magneto-optical effect have plenty of privileges compared to the traditional current sensors. However, the residual linear birefringence and environmental vibration sensitive problem are the fatal drawback in Sagnac fiber optic current sensors. In this paper, a vibration immunity sensing loop with a function of passive fiber optic polarization control is proposed, which consist of a spun or twisted fiber with highly birefringence. A spun or twisted fiber possesses two crucial functions: remove the residual linear birefringence and control polarization of light. It is used as a substitute for fiber-optic quarter wave plate, which is sensitive to temperature fluctuation. Use the special fiber to encircle a distinctive geometric configuration, eliminating the influence of vibration or the Sagnac effect undesired. It has been demonstrated that the novel fiber optic current sensor has high sensitivity, considerable wide dynamic range, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and immunity of vibration.

Abstract:All-fiber optical current sensor (AFOCS) is a perfect product formed by the combination of fiber-optic sensing technology and the Faraday effect. It boasts significant advantages such as resistance to electromagnetic interference, a high measurement dynamic range and precision, low power consumption, low cost, and insulation. Additionally, it enables long-distance transmission, making it one of the main devices for current monitoring in smart grids. However, the birefringence within the sensing fiber is highly susceptible to changes in temperature, causing the polarization state of light to be extremely sensitive to temperature variations. This sensitivity significantly impacts the accuracy of current measurements. A novel loop structure AFOCS with a coupled fiber polarization rotator (FPR) is introduced in this paper. The operating principle of this structure is theoretically analyzed, and the Jones matrix is used to analyze the output light intensity signal and derive the error formula. After comparing the measurement accuracy of the basic AFOCS and the loop structure AFOCS, it is demonstrated that this novel structure can improve current sensitivity by enhancing the temperature robustness of the system. Additionally, the error generated by the FPR is controlled below 1%, meeting the requirements for stable system operation. Therefore, this novel structure effectively improves the accuracy of current measurement and exhibits strong temperature stability.

Abstract:We obtain an extremely high current sensitivity by wrapping a section of microfiber on a thin-diameter chromium-nickel wire. Our detected current sensitivity is as high as 220.65 nm/A2 for a structure length of only 35 μm. Such sensitivity is two orders of magnitude higher than the counterparts reported in the literature. Analysis shows that a higher resistivity or/and a thinner diameter of the metal wire may produce higher sensitivity. The effects of varying the structure parameters on sensitivity are discussed. The presented structure has potential for low-current sensing or highly electrically-tunable filtering applications.

Abstract:Temperature cross-sensitivity is the main obstacle to the practical application of fiber current sensors based on the garnet crystal Faraday rotator. In this paper, a temperature compensation method is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By introducing an appropriate static bias to the sensor, temperature compensation can be realized by simply measuring the Faraday rotation angles of the total field and the bias field. Experimental results show that the maximum relative error of the sensor is reduced from ±8.0% to ±2.0% in the temperature range of −20 °C to 60 °C after the application of the proposed method. After the correction of the nonlinearity of the Faraday crystal, the error is further reduced to be within ±1.0% in the whole temperature range. In common environmental temperature range, the maximum relative variation is within about ±0.5%. With the proposed method, AC signals can be continuously measured with temperature compensation in real-time. The fiber sensor with the proposed method can be used for metering or protection purpose in high-voltage power transmission systems.

Abstract:It has been challenging to demodulate short-time and weak current signals collected by fiber optic current sensors (FOCSs) under ultra-high voltage, since the background noise can significantly affect the spectra of the current signals. To address this issue, here we propose a novel FOCS demodulation method based on backpropagation neural network, where the impact of the noise on the measurement can be largely reduced. The demodulation method can determine the amplitudes of short time series of weak currents with high resolution and accuracy. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the demodulation accuracy and robustness of the method are experimentally investigated and compared with those of the traditional fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. The experimental results show that our method can produce reliable results when demodulating weak current signals over short time windows of less than one period, and achieve a significantly lower standard deviation (6.7 mA) compared with the FFT method (15.6 mA) in the current range 0–0.306 A. The higher robustness against the background noise than the FFT method and the excellent repeatability of our demodulation method are also demonstrated through simulations. These results suggest that the proposed method will provide an effective way to improve the detection performances of FOCSs in fast dynamic measurements.
