Abstract:Nanomechanical resonators driven by modulated signals combine the physics of mesoscopic vibrational states and the technologies of radio communication. Their simplest property stems from their resonant response: they behave as filters, only responding to driving signals whose frequency components lie well within their mechanical bandwidth. This entails that only narrowband signals may be processed by a mechanical resonator without incurring some distortion. Here, we demonstrate that graphene nanomechanical resonators can be employed as radio frequency receivers for digital video signals whose bandwidth is larger than or comparable to that of the mechanical response. By carefully adjusting the bandwidth and the carrier frequency of the signal, we transduce the electrical video signal into vibrations while minimizing distortion caused by the mechanical response. Surprisingly, we find that the digital bit stream from the video acts as a sensitive probe for detecting nanomechanical nonlinearities. Finally, we demonstrate a multichannel television broadcast mediated by nanomechanical vibrations. Our work brings mesoscopic vibrations into the world of video signal processing.
