Abstract:The role of stishovite in transporting water in subducting slabs has been a subject of debate for several decades. Here we investigated stishovite's water solubility and its potential role in water transportation as a function of temperature from 1300 to 2100°C at 22 GPa. Under water‐saturated conditions, high‐quality, Al‐free stishovite single crystals were synthesized with multi‐anvil press, and their water contents were measured using infrared spectroscopy. The H2O solubility in stishovite increases from 128(20) to 521(47) wt. ppm with increasing temperature from 1300 to 1700°C and decreased to 145(26) wt. ppm at 2100°C. The maximum H2O content was about seven times larger than earlier high‐temperature multi‐anvil studies but significantly lower than recent laser‐heated diamond anvil cell and low‐temperature multi‐anvil studies. We suggest that Al‐free stishovite may not be a significant H2O carrier in subducting slabs, at least at the topmost lower mantle corresponding to our experimental conditions.

Abstract:We systematically investigated H 2 O solubility in majorite as a function of temperature at 1670 -2270 K under a pressure condition of 20 GPa using multi-anvil experimental techniques.The H 2 O solubility in majorite decreases with increasing temperature.In addition, the H 2 O content is relatively independent of the concentrations of Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 in majorite.Majorite can store more H 2 O than bridgmanite in the lower mantle.Therefore, when a slab sinks into the lower mantle, hydrous melt could be produced not only by the phase transformation from ringwoodite to bridgmanite + ferropericlase near 660-km depth, but also by the majorite to bridgmanite transformation over a wide range of depth from 660 km up to ~800 km, at which depth majorite dissolves completely in bridgmanite.

Pressure Dependence of Proton Incorporation and Water Solubility in Olivine

Abstract:Hydrous forsterite single crystals were synthesized at 8 GPa and 1250 degrees C using a multianvil apparatus under various SiO2 activity conditions. Electron microprobe and transmission Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses show that the Mg/Si atomic ratio increases with increasing water content. This provides new evidence that protons are mainly stored in Si sites in hydrous forsterite. The contribution of Mg sites for proton incorporation can be significant at <= 2.5 GPa with excess SiO2 but is negligible at higher pressures. Protons in olivine under asthenospheric conditions are therefore mostly maintained in Si sites. A summary of experimental studies suggests that the water solubility of forsterite/olivine equilibrated with excess (Mg,Fe)O is substantially higher than that with excess SiO2; however, this difference decreases with increasing pressure and becomes identical at 12-14 GPa. Owing to the low water solubility of olivine under topmost asthenospheric conditions, the geophysically observed low viscosity and low seismic velocity zones cannot be caused by olivine hydration, and the high conductivity anomaly should not be attributed to free H+-controlled proton conduction in olivine.
Re-configuration and Interaction of Hydrogen Sites in Olivine at High Temperature and High Pressure

Abstract:Fingerprinting hydrogen storage sites in olivine at high temperature and high pressure is fundamental to understand water distribution and its impact on the upper mantle. We carried out in situ high-temperature and high-pressure IR spectroscopic investigations on hydrogen storage sites in the natural olivine and synthetic Fe-free forsterite. Based on in situ observations of hydrogen in both the natural olivine and synthetic Fe-free forsterite at high temperatures and high pressures, we find that hydrogen does not transfer between storage sites with increasing temperature, but displays disordering at temperatures over 600 degrees C. In contrast, pressure can induce re-configuration of hydrogen storage sites corresponding to the 3610 and 3579 cm(-1) bands. Hydrogen storage sites also exhibit disordering at high pressure. In addition, the dehydrogenation experiments of the natural olivine indicate interacts of hydrogen storage sites. Protons released from titanium-clinohumite defects move to pure Si vacancies, and also to Mg vacancies coupling with trivalent cations. This study is the first attempt to fingerprint hydrogen storage sites in olivine at high temperature and high pressure using in situ IR spectroscopy. The implications of the temperature-and pressure-induced disordering and re-configuration of hydrogen storage sites are discussed. The disordering and re-configuration of hydrogen storage sites at high temperature and high pressure favor better understanding of the water effects on physical properties of olivine. The interactions of hydrogen storage sites during dehydrogenation warn that some hydrogen if observed in dehydrated mantle-derived samples may not be original and also make hydrogen diffusivity complex.
Atomistic Mechanism of Al Substitution Effects on the Ferroelastic Post-stishovite Transition by High-Pressure Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction

Abstract:The influence of Al substitution on the elastic properties of stishovite and its transition to post-stishovite is of great importance for interpreting the seismic wave velocities of subducted mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) within the mantle transition zone and the lower mantle. However, atomistic mechanisms of Al substitution effects on the transition and its associated elasticity remain debated. Here synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements have been performed at room temperature on Al1.3-SiO2 (1.3 mol% Al in the chemical formula of Si0.965(3)Al0.041(1)O2H0.017(4)) and Al2.1-SiO2 (2.1 mol% Al in Si0.948(2)Al0.064(1)O2H 0.018(3)) crystals in diamond anvil cells with Boehler-Almax designed anvils up to 38.0 GPa and 28.5 GPa, respectively. Refinements of the diffraction patterns show that a transformation from stishovite (space group P42/mnm; No. 136) to CaCl2-typed post-stishovite (space group Pnnm; No. 58) is accompanied by splitting of O coordinates. The Al substitution in stishovite results in a faster decrease in the O coordinate, softer apical (Si,Al)-O bonds, and a softer and less distorted (Si,Al)O6 octahedron under compression. This leads to reduced adiabatic bulk modulus (KS), shear modulus (G), shear wave velocity (VS), and compressional wave velocity (VP) in the stishovite phase, explaining seismic wave perturbations in the mantle transition zone. Together with Raman data, Landau theory modeling shows that Al substitution increases the order parameter and excess free energy, stabilizing the post-stishovite phase at lower pressures. Correlation between elasticity and octahedral distortion index (D) reveals that at certain D, the Al substitution reduces KS, G, VS, and VP of the stishovite phase while increasing G, VS, and VP of the post-stishovite phase. Importantly, the maximum shear reduction is slightly enhanced at D = 0.00620(9) at the transition point. Our results help explain the seismically observed small-scale VS anomalies beneath subduction regions in the shallow lower mantle where Al,H-bearing stishovite undergoes the post-stishovite transition.

Water Effects on the Anharmonic Properties of Forsterite

Abstract:To quantify the effects of hydration on anharmonicity of olivine thermodynamics, we have measured in situ Raman spectra of an extremely hydrous forsterite with 4500 ppm (wt) H2O at temperatures up to 1273 K. All the Raman modes in hydrous forsterite shift linearly to lower wavenumbers with increasing temperature. The calculated isobaric mode Grtinesien parameters related to SiO4 internal stretching and bending vibrations are much lower than lattice vibrations. Additionally, compared with anhydrous forsterite, except for the modes at 919, 858, and 227 cm(-1), water greatly reduces the isobaric mode Grtineisen parameters of the Raman modes in forsterite. Water also has a large effect on the anharmonic parameters related to lattice vibrations, whereas it has little effect on the anharmonic parameters related to SiO4 internal stretching and bending vibrations. Those results have the implications to the variations of local structure with temperature and estimation of water effects on the thermodynamics of forsterite.
In Situ Ftir Investigations on Nominally Anhydrous Minerals at Varying Temperatures

Abstract:The knowledge of OH incorporated in nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs) is crucial for understanding the chemical and physical properties of the Earth's interior. Infrared Spectrometry (IR) is a powerful tool to detect trace amount of water in NAMs because of its high sensitivity, so it is widely used in investigating the species, concentration and site in crystals of water in NAMs. With the improvement of instruments and analytical techniques, more accessories attached with Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are applied. In situ FTIR analysis at varying temperatures can be used to obtain the spectra under different temperatures timely, so it is widely utilized in studying behavior of OH and H2O in hydrous minerals and glasses. Examining the variation of such spectra parameters as band position, band shape and band number with temperature can be used to study the dehydration mechanisms and diffusivity of hydrous minerals and glasses. Moreover, temperature dependence of IR absorption coefficient OH and H2O in glasses found by this technique call upon the correction of temperature-dependent absorption coefficients. Although in situ varying temperature FTIR technique is widely used in investigating OH and H2O in hydrous minerals and glasses, the application for NAMs is still scarce. The hydrous components in minerals are active and mobile, the speciation and sites of hydrous components under temperatures of geologic interest may be not the same as those at room temperature. So it is indispensable to obtain the spectra of water in NAMs under different temperatures timely. The earlier work using this technique for NAMs simply examined the change of the spectra with temperature and identified H species. Now, inspired by the relevant work of hydrous minerals and glasses, in situ varying temperature FTIR technique is also utilized in investigating dehydration mechanisms and diffusivity of water in NAMs. Moreover, using in situ varying temperature FTIR technique, temperature dependence of integral absorption coefficients of OH in NAMs can be studied through observation of IR integral absorbances of OH at different temperatures. On the other hand, by analyzing the relationship between chemical composition and altitude of the change of band frequency with temperature, the information about OH incorporation mechanism in NAMs can be explored using in situ varying temperature FUR technique. Although some work has been carried out in recent years and has obtained some new achievements, the research about OH in NAMs using in situ varying temperature FTIR technique is still in preliminary stage. Further studies in NAMs by this technique will be focused on the followings; (I) quantifying the temperature-dependence of OH IR absorption coefficient; (2) expanding the study of dehydration mechanism and kinetics; (3) exploring the OH incorporation mechanism.

Abstract:Water is transported into the deep mantle by subducting slabs, playing important roles in mantle dynamics and evolution. An aluminous hydrous mineral, phase δ with a main component of AlOOH, has been considered an important water carrier in the lower mantle. Recent studies reported that SiO 2 stishovite can accommodate weight percent levels of water, indicating another important water carrier in the lower mantle. However, which mineral can mainly carry water is not clear yet. Recent hydrous phase relation studies reported that stishovite is depleted in alumina when coexisting with hydrous phase δ, in which water content of stishovite was not investigated. In this study, we investigated hydrogen partitioning between stishovite and hydrous phase δ at 24–28 GPa and 1000–1200 °C by means of Kawai-type multi-anvil press in combination with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy at ambient conditions on recovered samples. Fourier-transform infrared spectra of recovered stishovites showed that water contents of stishovite coexisting with hydrous phase δ were limited to up to ~ 500 ppm. This indicates that coexisting hydrous phase δ causes not only depletion in alumina but also in hydrogen in stishovite and therefore mainly transports water in a cold subducting slab. Once hydrous phase δ becomes thermally unstable, alumina and water contents in silica minerals are increased by the chemical reaction between SiO 2 and AlOOH, and aluminous silica minerals such as stishovite and CaCl 2 -type phase will be a main water carrier in the lower mantle. Presence of small-scale seismic scatterers observed around 1900 km depth, which was considered to be caused by a transition from almost pure SiO 2 stishovite to CaCl 2 -type phase, might also be able to be explained by the phase transition of stishovite coexisting with hydrous phase δ.

Abstract:It has long been known that hydrogen impurities can be incorporated in the structure of nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs) and substantially influence their physical properties. One of the geologically most prominent NAMs is feldspar. The hydrogen concentration in NAMs is usually expressed in parts per million of water by weight (ppm H2O wt.) In this paper, we use the term “hydrogen” for uniformity, except when we use “water” for describing its amount expressed as parts per million of H2O by weight. In our article (Liu et al., 2018), we carried out in situ high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies on three natural anorthoclase samples with similar Or (K-feldspar) contents (Ab67Or31An2, Ab66Or31An2, and Ab65Or33An3) and Al–Si disordering but contrasting water contents. The spectroscopic results suggested that the displacive phase transition temperature is higher for the nearly anhydrous anorthoclase sample than the anorthoclase samples with about 200 ppm water, and we thus concluded that hydrogen is another factor impacting the displacive phase transition temperature. We thank Kroll and Schmid-Beurmann for pointing out the weakness in our interpretation that hydrogen is a possible important factor (Kroll and Schmid-Beurmann, 2020). To clarify this issue, we conducted transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments on the three samples to check texture effects. The TEM studies indicated that the nearly anhydrous anorthoclase sample consists of two feldspar phases, a K-poor and a K-rich one, and that the K-poor area may be responsible for the higher displacive phase transition temperature. According to the observation that the temperature of redistribution of hydrogen is accordant with the displacive phase transition temperature, the effect of hydrogen could not be ruled out. Based on these results, it can be concluded that hydrogen may not be the sole possible factor, and it was a proposition more than a definitive proof for the moment. Natural feldspars are complex, and factors affecting displacive phase transitions are multiple (e.g., Salje et al., 1991; Harrison and Salje, 1994; Hayward and Salje, 1996; Dobrovolsky et al., 2017). Therefore, to further investigate hydrogen effects on displacive phase transition in feldspar, synthetic samples with pure chemical compositions and hydrogen species are necessary. In the following, we address each issue in the same order as in the comment by Kroll and Schmidt-Beurmann (2020).
Hydrous Aluminous Silicas As Major Water Hosts in the Lower Mantle

Abstract:The H2O incorporation into minerals changes the properties of minerals and rocks and affects the dynamics and evolution of the Earth’s interior. The higher H2O contents in plume-related magmas than in mid-oceanic ridge magmas suggest that deeper regions store more significant amounts of H2O than shallower regions in the mantle. Paradoxically, however, the H2O solubility in the lower-mantle minerals in ultramafic systems is limited. Therefore, we expect basaltic fragments of subducted slabs to store H2O in the lower mantle. It has been suggested that silica minerals can be H2O hosts in the basaltic systems under lower-mantle conditions, and alumina incorporation enhances their H2O solubility. To determine the stability and water solubility of silica minerals under top-most lower-mantle conditions, the current study synthesised silica minerals in the SiO2-Al2O3-H2O systems at pressures of 24 and 28 GPa and temperatures of 1000 to 2000°C using a multi-anvil press. We identified phases present in the run products using a micro-focused X-ray diffractometer and measured their water solubility using an FT-IR spectrometer.We found that the Al2O3 contents in the silica minerals increased with increasing temperature from 0.7~0.8 wt.% at 1000~1200°C to 10 wt.% at 2000°C. Their H2O contents also increased with increasing temperature from 0.3 at 1700°C to 1.0~1.1 wt.% at 1900°C. The silica mineral was stishovite at temperatures lower than 1600~1700°C, whereas it was CaCl2-structured silica, referred to as post-stishovite, at higher temperatures. Thus, post-stishovite contained much more significant amounts of H2O than stishovite whose water content is consistent with previous reports.The concomitant increases in H2O and Al2O3 contents suggest that H2O is incorporated via charge-coupled substitution of Si4+ — Al3++H+ in these silica minerals. The current stability of post-stishovite in H2O- and Al2O3-bearing systems is located at much lower pressures than in pure SiO2 and H2O-poor, Al2O3-bearing systems. In addition, the OH bands are more intense in the E//[010] direction than in the E//[100] direction. These observations imply that tilting of (Si, Al)O6 octahedra around the c axis by the hydrogen bonding in the [010] direction may have stabilised poststishovite at lower pressures.The increases in H2O solubility in aluminous stishovite and poststishovite with temperature have a tremendous impact on the H2O storage and transport in the mantle. The H2O solubility in the other nominally anhydrous minerals decreases with increasing temperature. Dense hydrous magnesium silicates decompose with increasing temperature. Therefore, these minerals cannot be H2O hosts or carriers in the deep mantle except for cold subduction zones. On the other hand, hydrous stishovite and poststishovite can store and transport H2O in ambient mantle and even in plumes.It has been considered that the stishovite-poststishovite transition causes seismic scattering in the mid-mantle. However, many seismic scatterers are located at 700 to 1900 km depths, which are too shallow for the stishovite-poststishovite transition in the pure SiO2 system. However, we found that the Al2O3 and H2O incorporations lower the transition pressure to 24 GPa, i.e., 700 km depth. Hence, observing the seismic scatterers in the mid-mantle supports significant H2O storages in aluminous poststishovite.
Temperature Dependences of Hydrous Species in Feldspars

Abstract:Feldspars are abundant in the crust of the Earth. Multiple hydrogen species such as OH, H2O and NH4+ can occur in the structure of feldspars. Hydrogen species play a critical role in influencing some properties of the host feldspars and the crust, including mechanical strength, electrical property of the crust, and evolution of the crustal fluids. Knowledge of hydrous species in feldspars to date has been mostly derived from spectroscopic studies at ambient temperature. However, the speciation and sites of hydrous species at high temperatures may not be quenchable. Here, we investigated the temperature dependences of several typical hydrous components (e.g., type IIa OH, type IIb OH and type I H2O) in feldspars by measuring the in situ FTIR spectra at elevated temperatures up to 800 °C. We found that the hydrous species demonstrated different behaviors at elevated temperatures. With increasing temperature, type IIa OH redistributes on the various sites in the anorthoclase structure. Additionally, O–H vibration frequencies increase for types IIa and IIb OH, and they decrease for type I H2O with increasing temperature. In contrast to type I H2O which drastically dehydrates during the heating process, types IIa and IIb OH show negligible loss; however, the bulk integral absorption coefficients drastically decrease with increasing temperature. These results may have implications in understanding the properties of hydrous species and feldspars at non-ambient temperatures, not only under geologic conditions but also at cold planetary surface conditions.

Abstract:This paper reports the experimental results of water solubility in San Carlos olivine single crystals with different iron content hydrothermally annealed under a pressure of 300MPa and at a temperature from 1000°C to 1300°C with 50°C increments with oxygen fugacity controlled by the Ni/NiO buffer. The water content was analyzed using infrared spectra in [010] direction of polished samples in crack-free and inclusion-free regions about 15 to 25 um in diameter. From the FTIR analysis, it is observed that water content increases with iron content as well as temperature under the experimental condition we used. The implication of the test result to the dynamic process in earth mantle is discussed briefly as well.

In addition, studies also indicate that OH - is dominant in the early solubility and H 2O becomes important with higher water contents. And the change of water solubility speciation in melts agrees with the character of hydrous melt.
Post-stishovite transition in hydrous aluminous SiO2

Abstract:Lakshtanov et al. (2007) showed that incorporation of aluminum and some water into SiO2 significantly reduces the post-stishovite transition pressure in SiO2. This discovery suggested that the ferroelastic post-stishovite transition in subducted MORB crust could be the source of reflectors/scatterers with low shear velocities observed in the mid to upper lower mantle. A few years later, a similar effect was observed in anhydrous Al-bearing silica. In this paper, we show using first principles static calculations and molecular dynamics using inter-atomic potentials that hydrogen bonds and hydrogen mobility play a crucial role in lowering the post-stishovite transition pressure. A cooperative redistribution of hydrogen atoms is the main mechanism responsible for the transition pressure reduction in hydrous aluminous stishovite. The effect is enhanced by increasing hydrogen concentration. This perspective suggests a potential relationship between the depth of seismic scatterers and the water content in stishovite.

Effect of Alkalis on Water Diffusion in Silicate Melts Based on New Experimental Data for a Shoshonitic Melt

Abstract:Water diffusion is an important mechanism affecting magmatic water content, vapor bubble growth, and the dynamics of volcanic eruptions. Water diffusivity in silicate melts is dependent on temperature, pressure, H2O content and speciation, and melt composition. While a general model has recently been developed for water diffusivity in calc-alkaline (subalkaline) melts as a function of silica content, the effect of alkalis on water diffusion is less clear due to the lack of experimental data for alkali-rich melts and a systematic evaluation. Here, water diffusion in shoshonitic melt with up to 1.6 wt% H2O was investigated at 1654-1926 K and 1 GPa in a piston cylinder apparatus using both hydration and diffusion couple methods. Diffusion profiles measured by FTIR microspectroscopy are in accordance with a modified speciation-based diffusion model which takes into account different mobility of hydroxyl (OH) and molecular H2O (H2Om). The diffusivity ratio D-OH/D-H2Om in shoshonitic melt increases with increasing temperature and falls into the range of 0.24-0.55, greater than the values for all of the melts previously investigated. The remarkable contribution of OH to water diffusion in shoshonitic melt is attributed to a substantial presence of free OH species (OH bonding with network-modifying cations but here especially with K or Na). The total H2O diffusivity in shoshonitic melt can be expressed as: DH2Ot = e(-12.11)-16765/T (1 + Ce-11.14+17381-262.6C/T), where D is in m(2)/s, T is temperature in K, and C is H2Ot content in wt% (D-H2Ot reduced to DOH at C = 0). The above equation replicates the experimental data within 0.1 natural log unit. The total H2O diffusivities at 1 wt% H2Ot in three alkali-rich melts, including shoshonite, trachyte and phonolite, appear to fall onto a single Arrhenian trend line over a broad temperature range of 1100-1900 K. Compared to the general water diffusivity model for calc-alkaline melts, water diffusivities in alkali-rich silicate melts are generally higher and roughly twofold at the same P-T-H2Ot-XSi conditions, with XSi being the mole fraction of Si among all cations. Excess alkalis decrease degree of melt polymerization and promote formation of mobile K-OH and Na-OH species, thereby having a positive influence on water diffusion and vapor bubble growth in magma. Decomposition of Kyanite and Solubility of Al 2 O 3 in Stishovite at High Pressure and High Temperature Conditions

Abstract:In order to constrain the high-pressure behavior of kyanite, multi-anvil experiments have been carried out from 15 to 25 GPa, and 1,350 to 2,500°C. Both forward and reversal approaches to phase equilibria were adopted in these experiments. We find that kyanite breaks down to stishovite + corundum at pressures above ∼15 GPa, and stishovite + corundum should be the stable phase assemblage at the pressure–temperature conditions of the transition zone and the uppermost part of the lower mantle of the Earth, in agreement with previous multi-anvil experimental studies and ab initio calculation results, but in disagreement with some of the diamond-anvil cell experimental studies in the literature. The Al2O3 solubility in nominally dry stishovite has been tightly bracketed by forward and reversal experiments; it is slightly but consistently reduced by pressure increase. Its response to temperature increase, however, is more complicated: increases at low temperatures, maximizes at around 2,000°C, and perhaps decreases at higher temperatures. Consequently, the Al2O3 solubility in dry stishovite at conditions of high temperature–high pressure is very limited.
