Abstract:High-temperature ionic conductivity in olivine single crystals has been measured in the [100], [010], and [001] crystallographic orientations as a function of pressure from 2 to 10 GPa, temperature from 1450 to 2180 K, and H2O content from 20 to 580 wt. ppm using multianvil presses with in situ impedance analyses. The experimental results yield an activation energy, activation volume, and H2O content exponent of 250-405 kJ/mol, 3.2-5.3 cm(3)/mol, and 1.3 +/- 0.2, respectively, for the high-temperature ionic conduction regime. Olivine ionic conductivity has negative pressure and positive temperature dependences and is significantly enhanced by H2O incorporation. The [001] direction is more conductive than the [100] and [010] directions. The H2O-enhanced ionic conductivity may contribute significantly to the electrical conductivity profile in the asthenosphere, especially in the regions under relatively high-temperature and low-pressure conditions.

Abstract:The oxygen fugacity (fO2) may affect the ionic conductivity of olivine under upper mantle conditions because Mg vacancies can be produced in the crystal structure by the oxidization of iron from Fe2+ to Fe3+.Here we investigated olivine ionic conductivity at 4 GPa,as a function of temperature,crystallo-graphic orientation,and oxygen fugacity,corresponding to the topmost asthenospheric conditions.The results demonstrate that the ionic conductivity is insensitive to fO2 under relatively reduced conditions(fO2 below Re-ReO2 buffer),whereas it has a clear fO2-dependence under relatively oxidized conditions(fO2 around the magnetite-hematite buffer).The ionic conduction in olivine may contribute significantly to the conductivity anomaly in the topmost asthenosphere especially at relatively oxidized conditions.
Pressure Dependence of Proton Incorporation and Water Solubility in Olivine

Abstract:Hydrous forsterite single crystals were synthesized at 8 GPa and 1250 degrees C using a multianvil apparatus under various SiO2 activity conditions. Electron microprobe and transmission Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses show that the Mg/Si atomic ratio increases with increasing water content. This provides new evidence that protons are mainly stored in Si sites in hydrous forsterite. The contribution of Mg sites for proton incorporation can be significant at <= 2.5 GPa with excess SiO2 but is negligible at higher pressures. Protons in olivine under asthenospheric conditions are therefore mostly maintained in Si sites. A summary of experimental studies suggests that the water solubility of forsterite/olivine equilibrated with excess (Mg,Fe)O is substantially higher than that with excess SiO2; however, this difference decreases with increasing pressure and becomes identical at 12-14 GPa. Owing to the low water solubility of olivine under topmost asthenospheric conditions, the geophysically observed low viscosity and low seismic velocity zones cannot be caused by olivine hydration, and the high conductivity anomaly should not be attributed to free H+-controlled proton conduction in olivine.

Abstract:We discuss the experimental results of silicon and oxygen self-diffusion coefficients in forsterite and iron-bearing olivine from the perspective of defect chemistry. Silicon diffusion is dominated by VO ··-associated VSi″″, whereas oxygen diffusion is dominated by hopping of VO ·· under anhydrous conditions, and by (OH)O · under hydrous conditions. By considering the charge neutrality condition of [(OH)O ·] = 2[VMe″] in hydrous forsterite and iron-bearing olivine, we get D Si ∝ (\(C_{{{\text{H}}_{2} {\text{O}}}}\))1/3 and D O ∝ (\(C_{{{\text{H}}_{2} {\text{O}}}}\))0, which explains the experimental results of water effects on oxygen and silicon self-diffusion rates (Fei et al. in Nature 498:213–215, 2013; J Geophys Res 119:7598–7606, 2014). The \(C_{{{\text{H}}_{2} {\text{O}}}}\) dependence of creep rate in the Earth’s mantle should be close to that given by Si and O self-diffusion coefficients obtained under water unsaturated conditions.
High Electrical Conductivity of Olivine at Oxidizing Conditions of the Shallow Mantle and Geophysical Implications

Abstract:High electrical conductivity in the shallow mantle has long been recognized by electromagnetic depth soundings, but the origin remains debated. Various candidates, of which the two most popular are water enrichment in olivine (the dominant mineral in the upper mantle) and partial melt, have been proposed to explain the electrical anomalies. These models nearly exclusively assume a very low conductivity for dry or water-poor olivine. Here, we show by experimental work that, under well-controlled conditions of pressure, temperature, oxygen fugacity (fO(2)), and water inventory, the conductivity of olivine is in fact insensitive to water content at mantle temperature (e.g., >1,000 degrees C), although the enhancement is substantial at relatively low temperature. In particular, the conductivity of olivine at temperature beyond similar to 1,000 degrees C is strikingly high, about 0.01-0.1 S/m, at the oxidizing conditions of the shallow mantle. The high conductivity is comparable to the geophysically measured high conductivity in many conductive regions of the shallow mantle. The results provide a new framework for understanding the electrical anomalies and electrical structure of the shallow mantle. Plain Language Summary Highly conductive zones at similar to 50-150-km depths in the shallow mantle have long been geophysically resolved, but the origin remains debated. It is commonly assumed that the electrical conductivity of dry and water-poor olivine is very low, so that the imaged electrical anomalies are caused by other conductive candidates. By carefully controlling the various factors that may affect the electrical conductivity of olivine, the dominant mineral in the upper mantle that determines largely the electrical structure, we provide experimental evidence that the conductivity of olivine is actually much higher at the oxidizing conditions of the shallow mantle than what has been assumed previously. This offers new insights into the electrical structure and dynamics of the shallow mantle.

Abstract:Mg lattice diffusion coefficients in iron-free olivine aggregates were measured as a function of pressure from 1 to 13 GPa, temperature from 1100 to 1300 K, and bulk water content from less than 1 up to 350 wt. ppm using multi-anvil apparatus and secondary ion mass spectrometer in depth profiling mode. The water contents in the samples were analyzed by Fourier transmission infrared spectrometer. The results show that Mg lattice diffusion coefficient increase with increasing temperature and water content, and decrease with pressure. The activation energy, water content exponent, and activation volume are 250 ± 30 kJ/mol, 1.2 ± 0.2, and 4.3 ± 0.3 cm3/mol, respectively. Since Mg lattice diffusion controls the ionic conduction in olivine based on the Nernst–Einstein relation, the ionic conductivity in the upper mantle appears as a maximum at the top of oceanic asthenosphere due to the negative correction for pressure and positive correction for water content, which well explains the high conductivity anomaly observed at ∼70–120 km depth beneath young oceanic plates.

Abstract:The incorporation of water in nominally anhydrous minerals plays a crucial role in many geodynamic processes and evolution of the Earth and affects the physical and chemical properties of the main constituents of the Earth's mantle. Technological advances now allow the transport properties of minerals to be precisely measured under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature (P and T) that closely mimic the P-T conditions throughout much of the Earth's interior. This contribution provides an overview of the recent progress in the experimental studies on the influence of water on physical properties (i.e., diffusivity, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, sound velocity, and rheology) of olivine, wadsleyite, and ringwoodite together with their applications. In particular, consistency among various experimental data is investigated, discrepancies are evaluated, and confusions are clarified. With such progress in the experimental determination of transport properties of major mantle minerals, we can expect new insights into a broad range of geoscience problems. Many unresolved issues around water inside Earth require an integrated approach and concerted efforts from multiple disciplines.
Influence of Saline Fluids on the Electrical Conductivity of Olivine Aggregates at High Temperature and High Pressure and Its Geological Implications

Abstract:The electrical conductivities of hydrous olivine (Ol) aggregates and Ol–H2O, Ol–NaCl–H2O (salinity: 1–21 wt%; fluid fraction: 5.1–20.7 vol%), Ol–KCl–H2O (salinity: 5 wt%; fluid fraction: 10.9–14.0 vol%) and Ol–CaCl2–H2O systems (salinity: 5 wt%; fluid fraction: 10.7–13.7 vol%) were measured at 2.0–3.0 GPa and 773–1073 K using a multi-anvil apparatus. The electrical conductivity of saline fluid-bearing olivine aggregates slightly increases with increasing pressure and temperature, and the electrical conductivities of both hydrous and saline fluid-bearing samples are well described by an Arrhenius relation. The dihedral angle of the saline fluids is approximately 50° in the Ol–NaCl–H2O system with 5 wt% NaCl and 5.1 vol% fluids, which implies that the fluids were interconnected along grain boundaries under the test conditions. The electrical conductivities of the Ol–NaCl–H2O system with 5 wt% NaCl and 5.1 vol% fluids are ∼two to four orders of magnitude higher than those of hydrous olivine aggregates. The salinity and fluid fraction moderately enhance the sample electrical conductivities owing to the interconnectivity of the saline fluids. The activation enthalpies of the electrical conductivities for the Ol–NaCl–H2O systems range from 0.07 to 0.36 eV, and Na+, Cl−, H+, OH−, and soluble ions from olivine are proposed to be the main charge carriers. For a fixed salinity and fluid fraction, the electrical conductivities of the Ol–NaCl–H2O system resemble the Ol–KCl–H2O system but are slightly higher than that of the Ol–CaCl2–H2O system. The Ol–NaCl–H2O system with a salinity of ∼5 wt% NaCl and fluid fraction larger than 1.8 vol% can be employed to reasonably explain the origin of the high-conductivity anomalies observed in mantle wedges.
Experimental Study of Water Solubility in Iron Rich Olivine

Abstract:The mechanical property of the upper mantle is controlled by the rheological properties of olivine. Water has great influence on the mechanical properties of olivine. Results showed that different temperatures and iron contents have influence on the water solubility of olivine. Therefore, the water solubility experiment was conducted on olivine with different iron contents at different temperatures in this paper. The olivine single crystals used in this study include natural San Carlo olivine single crystal Fa(17), Fa(24.7) (Fe-no. =100 x molar Fe/( Mg + Fe) ) and synthetic olivine single crystal Fa(22). Experiments were performed at temperatures between 1273K and 1473K with 50K increments at a confining pressure of 300MPa in a gas medium apparatus with oxygen fugacity buffered by the Ni : NiO. After the test, the olivine single crystal was double polished along b-plane. The composition was measured by Electron Probe, the orientation was determined by Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) and the OH absorption spectra were recorded by infrared spectroscopy, respectively, for each of the single crystal. Results showed that, when the temperature changes from 1273K to 1473K, the water solubility of Fa(17) olivine varied from 600 to 1200 H/10(6) Si, Fa(17) olivine from 1000 to 1300 H/10(6) Si and the synthetic Fa(22) olivine from 500 to 900 H/10(6) Si, respectively. Therefore, the water solubility of the olivine with the same iron content increases with the increase of the temperature. The water solubility of the olivine at the same temperature increases with the increase of the iron content for natural San Carlo olivine. One percent increase in iron content resulted in ten percent increase in water solubility. In this paper, the water solubility in olivine at several Fe contents can be used to estimate the water storage in the upper mantle.

Abstract:This paper reports the experimental results of water solubility in San Carlos olivine single crystals with different iron content hydrothermally annealed under a pressure of 300MPa and at a temperature from 1000°C to 1300°C with 50°C increments with oxygen fugacity controlled by the Ni/NiO buffer. The water content was analyzed using infrared spectra in [010] direction of polished samples in crack-free and inclusion-free regions about 15 to 25 um in diameter. From the FTIR analysis, it is observed that water content increases with iron content as well as temperature under the experimental condition we used. The implication of the test result to the dynamic process in earth mantle is discussed briefly as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the recent progress in the experimental studies of the electrical conductivity of dominant nominally anhydrous minerals in the upper mantle and mantle transition zone of Earth, namely, olivine, pyroxene, garnet, wadsleyite and ringwoodite. The main influence factors, such as temperature, pressure, water content, oxygen fugacity, and anisotropy are discussed in detail. The dominant conduction mechanisms of Fe-bearing silicate minerals involve the iron-related small polaron with a relatively large activation enthalpy and the hydrogen-related defect with lower activation enthalpy. Specifically, we mainly focus on the variation of oxygen fugacity on the electrical conductivity of anhydrous and hydrous mantle minerals, which exhibit clearly different charge transport processes. In representative temperature and pressure environments, the hydrogen of nominally anhydrous minerals can tremendously enhance the electrical conductivity of the upper mantle and transition zone, and the influence of trace structural water (or hydrogen) is substantial. In combination with the geophysical data of magnetotelluric surveys, the laboratory-based electrical conductivity measurements can provide significant constraints to the water distribution in Earth's interior.

Abstract:Fingerprinting hydrogen storage sites in olivine at high temperature and high pressure is fundamental to understand water distribution and its impact on the upper mantle. We carried out in situ high-temperature and high-pressure IR spectroscopic investigations on hydrogen storage sites in the natural olivine and synthetic Fe-free forsterite. Based on in situ observations of hydrogen in both the natural olivine and synthetic Fe-free forsterite at high temperatures and high pressures, we find that hydrogen does not transfer between storage sites with increasing temperature, but displays disordering at temperatures over 600 degrees C. In contrast, pressure can induce re-configuration of hydrogen storage sites corresponding to the 3610 and 3579 cm(-1) bands. Hydrogen storage sites also exhibit disordering at high pressure. In addition, the dehydrogenation experiments of the natural olivine indicate interacts of hydrogen storage sites. Protons released from titanium-clinohumite defects move to pure Si vacancies, and also to Mg vacancies coupling with trivalent cations. This study is the first attempt to fingerprint hydrogen storage sites in olivine at high temperature and high pressure using in situ IR spectroscopy. The implications of the temperature-and pressure-induced disordering and re-configuration of hydrogen storage sites are discussed. The disordering and re-configuration of hydrogen storage sites at high temperature and high pressure favor better understanding of the water effects on physical properties of olivine. The interactions of hydrogen storage sites during dehydrogenation warn that some hydrogen if observed in dehydrated mantle-derived samples may not be original and also make hydrogen diffusivity complex.
Co2-Induced Small Water Solubility in Olivine and Implications for Properties of the Shallow Mantle

Abstract:H2O and CO2 are important components of fluids in the mantle at similar to 30-150 km depth, and may affect strongly water dissolution in nominally anhydrous olivine; however, available experimental hydrogenation of olivine has been nearly exclusively carried out in coexistence with H2O (CO2-free). In this study, the effect of CO2 on water solubility in olivine has been investigated by H-annealing natural olivine under peridotite- and fluid-saturated conditions. Experiments were conducted at 1.5-5 GPa and 1100-1300 degrees C, with oxygen fugacity controlled by Ni-NiO and with either H2O or H2O-CO2 as buffering fluid. The olivine shows no change in composition during the experiments. The infrared spectra of the hydrated olivine are characterized by prominent OH bands from similar to 3650 to 3000 cm(-1) in all the runs, at both high frequency (>3450 cm(-1)) and low frequency (<3450 cm(-1)), and the H2O solubility is similar to 120-370 ppm for the olivine in coexisting with H2O, and similar to 65-180 ppm for the olivine in coexisting with H2O-CO2. When CO2 is present in the buffering fluid, the H2O solubility of olivine is reduced by a factor of similar to 2, due to effect on the partitioning of water between minerals and coexisting fluid, and the measured H2O solubility shows independence on fluid composition (the molar ratio of CO2 to CO2 + H2O at similar to 0.2-0.5) given pressure, temperature and oxygen fugacity. Olivine equilibrated in the shallow mantle is probably dominated by OH groups in the wavenumber similar to 3650-3000 cm(-1), and the intensity of OH bands at low frequency may be higher than or comparable to those at higher frequencies. The storage capacity of water in the shallow mantle in previous estimates may have been overestimated by a factor of at least similar to 4 if the observed effect of CO2 on water solubility is correct. Our results have profound influence on understanding partial melting, electrical conductivity anomalies and metasomatism in the shallow mantle. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
In Situ Water Contents of Olivine from Combined Electron Backscatter Diffraction and Fourier Transform Infrared Analysis

Abstract:Water contents in olivine have significant effects on physical and chemical properties of the upper mantle. Water concentration in nominally anhydrous minerals is mainly determined by Fourier transform infrared(FTIR)spectroscopy based on the absorption coefficients of infrared light, which vary along different crystallographic directions in anisotropic minerals. Ideally, water contents in olivine should be analyzed on oriented grains using the polarized infrared light. However, this method is very time consuming because it requires mineral separation and orientation. Previous studies usually used unpolarized infrared light and calculated the average water content of many olivine grains in a thin section by Paterson(1982) calibration. However, application of unpolarized light assumes random orientation of mineral grains, which may underestimate water contents in olivine. Olivine in the upper mantle often develops lattice preferred orientation.In order to obtain water contents in olivine in a more effective and accurate way, this paper presents a new method to measure in situ water contents of olivine in a thin section using the combined electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD)and FTIR analysis.Based on results of Bell et al.(2003),an ellipsoid of the water absorption coefficient(W)is established using W values along three crystallographic axes[100],[010]and[001].Then based on the EBSD-derived orientation of an olivine grain,the specific water absorption coefficient along a certain direction(Ws)in the ellipsoid is determined.Finally,water content of the olivine grain is calculated using the Beer-Lambert equation. This method is applied to measure water concentration of olivine from garnet peridotite xenoliths brought by Muskox kimberlites in the Slave Craton(Canada).The results demonstrate that this method allows us to determine in situ water distribution of olivine in microscale and investigate the relationship between water contents and fabrics of olivine.

Abstract:Separated olivine grains from a deeply subducted serpentinized wehrlite (Changawuzi in the western Tianshan ultrahigh-pressure belt, China) were analysed with unpolarized transmission FTIR and the Ti contents were determined using LA-ICP-MS. The major bands in the olivine spectra display striking similarities to Ti-clinohumite and are interpreted as OH in lamellae. The quantification of the water content in lamellae requires calibration of the IR-absorption for such bands. We have obtained a new absorption coefficient for Ti-clinohumite of 0.125+/−0.017 ppm cm 2 based on polarized FTIR measurements on three orthogonal sections through a large single crystal of Ti-clinohumite from Val Malenco, which has a known water content of 1.53 wt%. The resulting water content in olivine using this calibration factor ranges from 440 to 2,600 ppm and correlates positively with the Ti content that ranges from 130 to 1,400 ppm. For the quantification of the water content in Ti-chondrodite and Ti-clinohumite that are associated with olivine, we developed a new method using attenuated total reflectance FTIR spectroscopy. Ti-chondrodite and Ti-clinohumite display similar IR bands at ~3,562, 3,525 and ~3,583–3,586 cm −1 . As in olivine, the water content and Ti content correlate in both Ti-clinohumite and Ti-chondrodite, indicating an intergrowth of these minerals, which has been confirmed by TEM analyses. Our results confirm previous suggestions that there is a strong correlation between the Ti content of ultramafic rocks and their capacity to transport water to the deeper mantle in subduction zones beyond conditions where hydrous phases are stable.

Abstract:Significance Thermal conductivity of mantle minerals is critical for controlling the temperature profile and dynamics of the mantle and subducting slabs. However, the effect of hydration on lattice thermal conductivity remains poorly understood. We studied lattice thermal conductivity of olivine (Mg 0.9 Fe 0.1 ) 2 SiO 4 (Fo90) to 15 GPa using ultrafast optics. The thermal conductivity of hydrous Fo90 with ∼7,000 wt ppm water is 2 times smaller than its anhydrous counterpart at transition zone pressures. Modeling thermal structure of a subducting slab shows that the hydration-reduced thermal conductivity in the oceanic crust further decreases the temperature within the subducting slab, which substantially lowers the olivine−wadsleyite transformation rate and extends the metastable olivine to greater depths. Such an effect could enhance water transportation to the transition zone.
