Abstract:A series of high-pressure multi-anvil experiments were conducted in the MgO-Al 2 O 3 system between 15 and 50 GPa and at temperatures up to 2623 K, to determine the solubility of Al 2 O 3 in periclase in the stability fields of coexisting spinel, corundum, the Mg 2 Al 2 O 5 modified ludwigite phase, the MgAl 2 O 4 calcium ferrite phase, and the MgAl 2 O 4 calcium titanate phase. The Al 2 O 3 solubility in periclase is strongly temperature-dependent over the conditions investigated. Conversely, periclase Al 2 O 3 solubility exhibits a negative relationship with pressure. Experiments with up to 40 mol.% FeO in ferropericlase show Al 2 O 3 solubilities that are near identical to those of periclase, within experimental uncertainties. A simple thermodynamic model incorporating significant literature on ambient pressure measurements is able to describe periclase Al 2 O 3 solubility up to 40 GPa. This model is used to investigate the Al 2 O 3 contents of ferropericlase inclusions observed in natural diamonds, which vary up to 0.35 mol. %. Pressure–temperature curves along which particular inclusions formed can be produced if equilibrium can be assumed with Al-bearing minerals found in the same diamond. Alternatively, the maximum possible Al 2 O 3 content in ferropericlase can be determined for a certain pressure–temperature profile and inclusions with Al 2 O 3 contents that exceed this curve can be excluded from those conditions. To obtain such solubility curves, calculations are performed for periclase coexisting with the Al-rich phases spinel, garnet, bridgmanite and the MgAl 2 O 4 calcium ferrite phase. The calculations indicate that periclase, and by inference ferropericlase, Al 2 O 3 -contents cannot be greater than 0.5 mol.% under present day adiabatic mantle temperatures and go through a minimum at mantle transition zone conditions. This excludes a number of Al-rich ferropericlase inclusions found in natural diamonds from being formed in the transition zone, unless temperatures were super-adiabatic. This subset of inclusions likely formed either at the base of the upper mantle or the top of the lower mantle, but must have formed at near adiabatic temperatures. The majority of ferropericlase inclusions have Al 2 O 3 contents that would be consistent with formation in the transition zone at near slab temperatures, but could still have been formed at higher temperatures if Al 2 O 3 activities were low.

Abstract:Phase relations in the system MgSiO3-Al2O3 were investigated at pressures of 27-45GPa and temperatures of 1700, 2000, and 2300K using sintered diamond and tungsten carbide anvils in a multianvil apparatus. The bulk compositions in the MgSiO3-Al2O3 binary system crystallize a phase assemblage of pyrope and corundum at pressures below 27GPa and an assemblage of bridgmanite and corundum at pressures above 27GPa regardless of temperatures. The solubility of Al2O3 in bridgmanite and that of MgSiO3 in corundum increases significantly with increasing temperature. The solubility of Al2O3 in bridgmanite increases from 6.7mol% at 1700K to 21.8mol% at 2500K under a constant pressure of 27GPa. Bridgmanite becomes more aluminous with increasing pressure from 27 to 45GPa at a given temperature. The MgSiO3 content in corundum increases with increasing pressure at pressure lower than 27GPa, while it decreases at pressure higher than 27GPa. Our results suggest that bridgmanite can incorporate a considerably higher Al2O3 content than that of the pyrope composition (25mol% Al2O3). The present study further suggests that the entire Al2O3 component is accommodated into bridgmanite in the pyrolite lower mantle. However, Al2O3 cannot be fully accommodated into bridgmanite in the coldest parts of subducted slabs in the shallow part of the lower mantle, and therefore, additional phases such as MgAl2O4 with calcium ferrite-type structure are necessary to host the excess Al2O3.Plain Language Summary Here we determined the phase relations in the system MgSiO3-Al2O3 up to 2300K under lower mantle pressures and found that the solubility of Al2O3 in bridgmanite and that of MgSiO3 in corundum increase with increasing temperature. Abstract:The relationship between podiform chromite deposits and micro-diamonds hosted in them, as well as the prevalent NiMnCo alloy inclusions found in micro-diamonds, remains enigmatic, but crucial to understanding their origin. Here we present a work where high temperature and high pressure (HPHT) experiments on diamond crystallization were conducted using NiMnCo-C-chromite as starting materials at similar to 5.5 GPa and similar to 1350 degrees C, in order to determine the relationship between unusual minerals, micro-diamonds, metal alloys, and podiform chromite deposits. The mineral assemblage determined on the quenched blocks shows that melting Mn reacts preferentially with Fe-IV(2+) in chromite, forming MnCr2O4 spinel and hematite (MCMH). Increasing the content of chromite from 0 wt% to 62 wt% in the NiMnCo-C system, the oxygen fugacity (f(O2)) controlled by the MCMH equilibrium increases from FMQ-1.1 (similar to NNO) to FMQ-0.2 (>CCO). The increased fO(2) value would cause reduced efficiency in transforming graphite in diamond (EGr-Dia), reduced particle size, and increased nitrogen and oxygen impurities in diamond crystal structures. A comparable mineral assemblage of NiMnCo alloy, hematite, and Mn-spinel inclusions in diamonds hosted in ophiolites suggests that MCMH equilibrium may occur in the deep upper mantle and diamonds may crystallize as the following model: 1. The MCMH reaction occurs when chromites carried by deep mantle upwelling interact with the upper NiMnCo alloy during migration; 2. Diamond rapidly crystallizes in a non-equilibrium environment due to gradually saturated carbon and suitable oxygen fugacity controlled by the MCMH equilibrium; 3. Diamond grains and phases of MCMH are captured and then transported to the upper mantle or surface by chromite or mantle peridotites during later mantle upwelling. This model may account for the variable diamond amount found in ophiolitic chromitites.

Abstract:Condensation models describe the equilibrium distribution of elements between coexisting mineral solid solutions, silicate liquid, and vapor in a closed chemical system, vapor phase always present, using equations of state of the phases involved at a fixed total P (< 1 bar) and temperature T. The VAPORS code uses a CaO-MgO-Al$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$ liquid model at T above the stability field of olivine and the MELTS algorithm at lower T. Quenched high-T crystal + liquid assemblages are preserved in meteorites as Type B Ca-, Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) and olivine-rich ferromagnesian chondrules. Experimental tests of compositional regions may clarify the nature of the phases present, the phase boundaries, and the partition of trace elements among these phases. Twenty-three Pt-loop equilibrium experiments in seven phase fields on twelve bulk compositions at specific T and dust enrichment factors tested the predicted stability fields of forsteritic olivine (Mg$_2$SiO$_4$), enstatite (MgSiO$_3$), Cr-bearing spinel (MgAl$_2$O$_4$), perovskite (CaTiO$_3$), melilite (Ca$_2$Al$_2$SiO$_7$ - Ca$_2$Mg$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$) and/or grossite (CaAl4O7) crystallizing from liquid. Experimental results for forsterite, enstatite, and grossite are in very good agreement with predictions, both in chemistry and phase abundances. On the other hand, the stability of spinel with olivine, and stability of perovskite and gehlenite are quite different from predictions. Perovskite is absent in all experiments. Even at low oxygen fugacity (IW-3.4), the most TiO$_2$-rich experiments do not crystallize Al-, Ti-bearing calcic pyroxene. The stability of spinel and olivine together is limited to a smaller phase field than is predicted. The melilite stability field is much larger than predicted, indicating a deficiency of current liquid or melilite activity models. In that respect, these experiments contribute to improving the data for calibrating thermodynamic models including MELTS.

Abstract:Olivine is the most abundant mineral in mantle peridotite and a typical inclusion in diamonds, providing essential evidence for the characterization of the diamondiferous lithospheric mantle. Three olivine inclusions in diamonds (OlDia) from Liaoning in the North China Craton (NCC) were exposed for in situ measurements, and the compositional data of 62 other OlDia from Liaoning were collected based on previous reports. The enrichment of TiO2 (>0.1 wt.%) with high Cr# (>50; Cr# = 100Cr/(Cr + Al) by atom) was revealed, despite the predominance of depleted TiO2 contents and high Mg# (92.8–93.2; Mg# =100Mg/(Mg + Fe) by atom) for OlDia. Silica fluid accompanying olivine still trapped in the host diamond was recognized using Raman spectroscopy. Three thermometers were applied to the OlDia, based on the data from Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA), and a temperature range (TLA and TEPMA) of 1080–1380 °C was yielded. With respect to the TLA, Al-in-olivine thermometers were preferred, although there was a smaller deviation between TEPMA and TLA when using the Cr-in-olivine thermometer. The results of these thermometers show a high correlation with TEPMA, enabling their application based on EPMA data. Projections onto 39–42 mW/m2 model geotherms underline a diamondiferous base of the lithospheric mantle beneath the NCC. The lithospheric mantle is characterized by refractory and depleted sections, where enrichment metasomatism may have occurred at the lower roots (161–178 km).

Abstract:Mixing properties of solid solutions of the post-spinel phases with a composition of CaCr 2 O 4 –CaAl 2 O 4 , CaCr 2 O 4 –CaFe 2 O 4 , MgCr 2 O 4 –MgAl 2 O 4 , and MgCr 2 O 4 –MgFe 2 O 4 in the temperature range of 1873–2223 K and at a pressure of 18–25 GPa were studied by the semi-empirical modeling. These PT parameters were used to estimate a formation energy of impurity defects of trivalent metal ions (aluminum and iron) in isomorphic sites. The study results: (1) the studied binary solid solutions are characterized by a complete miscibility; (2) the incorporation of Fe 3+ impurity ion into the post-spinel phases of MgCr 2 O 4 and CaCr 2 O 4 is less favorable in terms of energy than that of Al 3+ ions over the entire pressure and temperature range under study. The results obtained were used to interpret compositions of the post-spinel phases forming inclusions in lower mantle diamonds.

Abstract:Density and sound speed measurements were obtained over a wide range of temperature for three model basalt liquids in the An–Di–Hd (CaAl2Si2O8–CaMgSi2O6–CaFeSi2O6) system. High-temperature (1585–1838 K) double-bob density measurements were combined with low-temperature (943–930 K) measurements at the limiting fictive temperature for each sample to provide liquid volume data over a temperature interval of ∼900 K. In addition, relaxed sound speeds were obtained with a frequency sweep acoustic interferometer from 1665–1876 K. An ideal mixing model for molar volume, thermal expansivity, and isothermal compressibility recovers the new data from this study and leads to the following fitted values (±2σ) at 1723 K for V¯FeO (12.86±0.32 cm3/mol), ∂V¯FeO/∂T((3.69±1.16)×10−3 cm3/mol-K) and β¯T,FeO((4.72±0.46)×10−2 GPa−1). These volumetric properties for the FeO component are estimated to reflect Fe2+ in an average coordination of 5.7 (±0.2), based on the relationship between V¯FeO and Fe2+ coordination derived by a comparison to mineral molar volumes (Guo et al., 2013). Application of these volumetric data to a calculation of the pressure dependence of the Fe–Mg exchange reaction between orthopyroxene and basaltic liquid results in a small decrease in Fe–MgKD with pressure. In contrast, partial melting experiments of peridotite show a small increase in Fe–MgKD(opx-liq) with pressure (e.g., Walter, 1998). This difference in the pressure dependence is proposed to reflect the role of alkalis in reducing the average coordination number of Fe2+ toward five compared to the alkali-free model basalt compositions in this study, thus changing the volume and compressibility of the FeO liquid component. The results from this study may be most appropriately applied to lunar basalts, which are impoverished in alkalis.

Abstract:Thermochemical and thermophysical data for phases in the system MgO‐SiO2 are critically evaluated, refined, and supplemented by calculating phase equilibrium relations from the available calorimetric data. Lattice vibrational models are used to constrain further the entropies and heat capacities. Phases in the data base are MgO, SiO2 (coesite, stishovite), Mg2SiO4 (olivine, ß‐phase, spinel), and MgSiO3 (pyroxene, garnet, ilmenite, and perovskite). The internally consistent data set reproduces the experimentally determined phase relations in the system at pressures to 30 GPa and to melting temperatures.

Abstract:In the present work, phase equilibria in the Li O–Al O system were experimentally studied and calorimetric measurements were performed. Based on obtained results and data from literature, thermodynamic parameters of the system were assessed. The solid solution phases were modeled using Compound Energy Formalism (CEF) and liquid phase was described by two-sublattice partially ionic liquid model. The experimental investigations for selected compositions of isothermally heat-treated samples were performed using x-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to measure the temperature of the reactions as well as the heat capacities, respectively. After DTA, the microstructure was analyzed using SEM. Temperature of peritectic melting of h-LiAl O was determined to be 2222 K and temperature of eutectic reaction Liq -LiAlO + h-LiAl O to be 1965 K. Heat capacity of LiAlO and LiAl O was measured in the temperature range of 100-1300 K. The degree of inversion of spinel phase (Al , Li ) :(Al , Li , Va) :O was modelled assuming Al and Li can occupy tetrahedral (T) and octahedral (O) cationic sublattices while its composition extension in Al O enriched region was described by introducing vacancies in octahedral sites. Thermodynamic description derived in the present study reproduces the degree of inversion close to that of the high-temperature spinel phase, which means that Al ions preferentially occupy the tetrahedral sites. The calculated phase diagram satisfactorily agrees with the experimental results. Available experimental thermodynamic data are also reproduced within uncertainty limits.

In-situ High-Temperature Vibrational Spectra for Synthetic and Natural Clinohumite: Implications for Dense Hydrous Magnesium Silicates in Subduction Zones

Abstract:Clinohumite is a potentially abundant silicate mineral with high water concentration (2 similar to 3 wt% H2O) that is generated from dehydration of serpentine-group minerals in subduction zones. Previous studies show that fluorine substitution (OH-=F-) can stabilize clinohumite to significantly higher temperature in subduction zones, although temperatures within the slabs are thought to be well within the stability field of both F-bearing and OH-clinohumite. We collected in-situ high-temperature Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra for both the synthetic [Mg9Si4O16(OH)(2)] and natural [Mg7.84Fe0.58Mn0.01Ti0.25(SiO4)(4)O-0.5(OH)(1.30)F-0.20] clinohumite samples up to 1243 K. Three OH bands above 3450 cm(-1) are detected for both the natural and synthetic samples with negative temperature dependence, due to neighboring H-H repulsion in the crystal structure. Additional OH peaks are detected for the natural sample below 3450 cm(-1) with positive temperature dependence, which could be explained by non-polar F-substitution in the OH site. Hence, F-substitution significantly changes the high-temperature behavior of hydrogen bonds in the humite-group minerals. On the other hand, we evaluated the mode Gruneisen parameters (gamma(iP), gamma(iT)), as well as the intrinsic anharmonic parameters (a(i)) for clinohumite, chondrodite, and phase A, the dense hydrous magnesium silicate (DHMS) phases along the brucite-forsterite join. The estimated averaged anharmonic parameters (a(i_avg)) for these DHMS phases are systematically smaller than those of olivine. To model the thermodynamic properties of minerals (such as heat capacity) at the high-temperature conditions of the mantle, the DeBye model, which simply approximates the lattice vibrations as harmonic oscillators, is commonly used. In contrast to forsterite, such quasi-harmonic approximations are valid for clinohumite at subduction zone temperatures, as the anharmonic contribution is no more than 2% when extrapolated to 2000 K. Hence, the classic DeBye model can reasonably simulate the thermodynamic properties of these DHMS phases in subduction zones.

Bridgmanite becomes more aluminous with increasing temperatures. A LiNbO3-type phase with a pyrope composition (Mg3Al2Si3O12) forms at 2850 K, which is regarded as to be transformed from bridgmanite upon decompression. This phase contains 30 mol% Al2O3 at 3000 K. The MgSiO3 solubility in corundum also increases with temperatures, reaching 52 mol% at 3000 K. Molar volumes of the hypothetical Al2O3 bridgmanite and MgSiO3 corundum are constrained to be 25.95 ± 0.05 and 26.24 ± 0.06 cm3/mol, respectively, and interaction parameters of non-ideality for these two phases are 5.6 ± 0.5 and 2.2 ± 0.5 KJ/mol, respectively. The increases in Al2O3 and MgSiO3 contents, respectively, in bridgmanite and corundum are caused by a larger entropy of Al2O3 bridgmanite plus MgSiO3 corundum than that of MgSiO3 bridgmanite plus Al2O3 corundum with temperature, in addition to the configuration entropy. High-pressure, temperature elasticity of Fe- and Al-bearing MgSiO3: implications for the Earth's lower mantle

Abstract:Fe and Al are two of the most important rock-forming elements other than Mg, Si, and O. Their presence in the lower mantle's most abundant minerals, MgSiO_3 bridgmanite, MgSiO_3 post-perovskite and MgO periclase, alters their elastic properties. However, knowledge on the thermoelasticity of Fe- and Al-bearing MgSiO_3 bridgmanite, and post-perovskite is scarce. In this study, we perform ab initio molecular dynamics to calculate the elastic and seismic properties of pure, Fe^{3+}- and Fe^{2+}-, and Al^{3+}-bearing MgSiO_3 perovskite and post-perovskite, over a wide range of pressures, temperatures, and Fe/Al compositions. Our results show that a mineral assemblage resembling pyrolite fits a 1D seismological model well, down to, at least, a few hundred kilometers above the core-mantle boundary, i.e. the top of the D'' region. In D'', a similar composition is still an excellent fit to the average velocities and fairly approximate to the density. We also implement polycrystal plasticity with a geodynamic model to predict resulting seismic anisotropy, and find post-perovskite with predominant (001) slip across all compositions agrees best with seismic observations in the D''.

Abstract:Abstract We use an ab initio based thermodynamic model to study the Fe partitioning ( K D PPv-Fp  = (Fe/Mg) PPv /(Fe/Mg) Fp )) and Fe 3+ concentration in the Al-bearing and Al-free post-perovskite - ferropericlase (PPv-Fp) systems, and results are compared to a similar recent model (Xu et al., 2017) for bridgmanite (Bm). Lower mantle (lower oxygen fugacity) and oxidizing experimental conditions (higher oxygen fugacity) are considered. Under lower mantle conditions, we predict that the Fe 3+ concentration in both Al-free and Al-bearing PPv-Fp systems is very limited, due to the Fe 3+ and Fe 0 recombination and Fe 2+ production ( 2 Fe 3 + + Fe 0 → 3 Fe 2 + ). This effect leads to the majority of the total iron in the PPv-Fp systems being Fe 2+ and the lowermost mantle is predicted to have little metallic iron. The Fe 3+ content in PPv is approximately 3 times smaller than in Bm, which will lead to a large reduction of the amount of metallic iron in the lower mantle below the Bm/PPv transition. We also predict very little Fe in the PPv ( K D PPv-Fp  = (Fe/Mg) PPv /(Fe/Mg) Fp 3+ and more up to a 3 times increase in Fe partitioning coefficient compared to lower mantle conditions, suggesting that one must be cautious in applying results from more oxidizing experimental studies to lower mantle conditions. These results will help researchers understand the Fe chemistry in lower mantle phases both under the Earth’s lowermost mantle and laboratory experimental conditions.

Abstract:A thermochemical data base for phases in the system Fe-Mg-Si-O at high pressures up to 300 kbar is established by supplementing the available calorimetric data with data calculated from experimental high pressure synthesis studies. Phases included in the data base are the SiO2 polymorphs, rock salt solid solutions (Fe-Mg-O), Fe2O3, Fe3O4, (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 olivine, spinel, modified spinel and (Mg, Fe)SiO3 perovskite and pyroxene. Phases not included are the MgSiO3-ilmenite and -garnet. Fe-Mg solution properties of olivine, spinel, perovskite and wustite (rock salt) are estimated. The wüstite solid solution has been modeled as a nonideal solution of three end members; FeO, FeO1.5 and MgO. The new data base is made consistent with most of the available information on high pressure phase studies.
