Abstract:Ocean observation system that involves multiple underwater vehicles and seafloor nodes plays an important role in better learning the ocean, where underwater wireless communication is mandatory for massive data interaction. Optical communication that has wide bandwidth and comprehensive working distance is the preferred method compared to acoustic and other methods. However, the presence of directionality makes the optical method difficult to use especially when the transceiver is equipped on a motive vehicle. In this study, an underwater free-space optical communication method of transmitting information is proposed. Characteristics of underwater optical transmission, as well as the photoelectric signal processing and modulation and demodulation algorithms, are studied and modeled. New approach for realizing underwater free-space optical communication is proposed and simulated. A prototype including a free-space optical transmitter and a receiver is developed; tests in different scenarios were carried out, and the results were observed: (1) by using the minimum number of LEDs, the effect of uniform lighting in space is achieved, and the transmitter coverage reaches 160°. (2) When the power of the transmitter is 10 W and the communication rate is 1 Mbps, the maximum communication distance reaches 13 m.

Abstract:<p>Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is an emerging and feasible underwater communication technology and has developed rapidly in recent years. Building a high-performance and practical UWOC system requires comprehensive consideration and optimization design from the device to the system, as well as from the internal modulation to the external environment. This paper provides an overview of the recent developments in UWOC systems, covering aspects about the system transmitters and receivers, advanced modulation formats and underwater channels. Some key technologies to improve transmission capacity of UWOC are classified and summarized to provide guidance for system design. The main challenges and perspectives to achieve a reliable UWOC system are also mentioned. The summary and analysis of these advances and techniques will shed light on the future development of UWOC technology and assist in the construction of the internet of underwater things.</p>

We provide a tutorial on the basic concepts and essential features of UWOC, as well as an overview of work being conducted in this field. Research challenges, arising from the characteristics of underwater channels, and possible roadmaps are discussed in detail. This review is expected to be of great use for the link designers of this field.

Abstract:Optical communication has been employed in a wide range of applications, including terrestrial, submarine, inter-satellite, and even space communication. It is particularly successful in fiber-based communication networks that vastly reshape modern life through the Internet. With the intensified activities such as undersea resource exploration, ecosystem monitoring, and recreation, underwater is an exciting new arena for optical wireless communication (OWC). In this paper, we review the recent progress of underwater and water-air OWC systems. Channel characterization, communication system design, and performance investigations are given. Critical limitations and effective mitigation methods to overcome the influence of bubbles and waves are presented. We also address the current issues for proper performance comparison under different wave conditions. With further research in channel modeling, device innovation, and system design optimization, practical and robust underwater and water-air OWC systems can be realized.

Abstract:Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) can provide a high-speed and flexible communication link for underwater platforms. This paper introduces the basic structure of a UWOC link and points out the optimization schemes for a UWOC system. Absorption, scattering, and turbulence will affect the performance of a UWOC system. A comprehensive study of channel characteristics can guide the design of transmitters, receivers, and related signal processing technologies. The performance of UWOC can also be optimized by multiplexing technologies, single-photon detection technologies, and alignment systems. A comprehensive test platform could provide a necessary test environment for further sea trials and the practical applications of UWOC. The paper is expected to serve as a guideline for researchers related to UWOC.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communications refer to data transmission in unguided water environment through wireless carriers, i.e., radio-frequency (RF) wave, acoustic wave, and optical wave. In comparison to RF and acoustic counterparts, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) can provide a much higher transmission bandwidth and much higher data rate. Therefore, we focus, in this paper, on the UOWC that employs optical wave as the transmission carrier. In recent years, many potential applications of UOWC systems have been proposed for environmental monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster precaution, and military operations. However, UOWC systems also suffer from severe absorption and scattering introduced by underwater channels. In order to overcome these technical barriers, several new system design approaches, which are different from the conventional terrestrial free-space optical communication, have been explored in recent years. We provide a comprehensive and exhaustive survey of the state-of-the-art UOWC research in three aspects: 1) channel characterization; 2) modulation; and 3) coding techniques, together with the practical implementations of UOWC.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communication (UWC) means the transmission of data using wireless channels through the underwater, i.e. radio frequency waves (RF), acoustic waves and optical waves in an unguided water environment. In this review article we focus on underwater optical wireless communications (UWOCs) using optical waves as transmission medium. UWOCs have a much higher communication frequency and therefore a much higher data rate compared to RF and acoustic counter-parts. Due to this high-speed data transfer advantage, UWOC has been very attractive over the past few years. Many applications have been proposed in UWOC systems for protection of the environment, underwater exploration, emergency alerts and military operations etc. However, underwater channels also suffer from extreme absorption and dispersion. In recent years, a variety of innovative methods of network architecture have been developed to meet these technological challenges, which are different from standard terrestrial, open space optical communications. In this article we give a detailed overview of various research activities on UWOC.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communication (UWC) technology has attracted widespread attention in the past few years. Compared with conventional acoustic underwater wireless communication technology, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) technology has promising potential to provide high data rate wireless connections due to the large license-free bandwidth. Building a high-performance and reliable UOWC system has become the target of researchers and various advanced and innovative technologies have been proposed and investigated. Among them, better hardware such as transmitters and receivers, as well as more advanced modulation and signal processing techniques, are key factors in improving UOWC system performance. In this paper, we review the recent development in UOWC systems. In particular, we provide a brief introduction to different types of UOWC systems based on channel configuration, and we focus on various recent studies on advanced signal processing methods in UOWC systems, including both traditional non-machine learning (NML) equalizers and machine learning (ML) schemes based on neural networks. In addition, we also discuss the key challenges in UOWC systems for future applications.

Abstract:More and more underwater vehicles and sensor networks are deployed as humans increase their efforts to explore and develop the ocean. Traditional underwater cables cannot adapt to the communication between mobile nodes, and underwater acoustic communication cannot meet the increasing demand for data transmission. Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has great advantages in short-distance high-speed underwater communication application scenarios because of its advantages such as high speed, low latency, low power consumption, and good confidentiality. However, due to the large attenuation, the limited transmission distance of light in the water has been restricting the development and application of UWOC. This review summarizes the methods and technical paths for extending the distance of UWOC, which can provide some inspiration for those engaged in this research field.

Abstract:Underwater Optical Wireless Communication (UOWC) is not a new idea, but it has recently attracted renewed interest since seawater presents a reduced absorption window for blue-green light. Due to its higher bandwidth, underwater optical wireless communications can support higher data rates at low latency levels compared to acoustic and RF counterparts. The paper is aimed at those who want to undertake studies on UOWC. It offers an overview on the current technologies and those potentially available soon. Particular attention has been given to offering a recent bibliography, especially on the use of single-photon receivers.

Abstract:The transmission distance, alignment requirement and stability of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems are usually difficult to trade off. In this article, to ensure that the optical spot at the receiver end has sufficient optical power and uniform power distribution, the transmitter of a UWOC system is designed based on a single-color light-emitting diode (LED) array with a beam shaping system. The lens group-based beam shaping scheme not only extends the transmission distance, but still maintains the easy-alignment nature and stability of the LED-based UWOC link. At the receiver, a diversity reception scheme with an array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), and a high-gain scheme combining a PMT with an optical antenna, are adopted and compared. To alleviate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and compensate for the nonlinear distortion of the signal, hardware pre-equalization and nonlinear post-equalization based on Volterra are adopted at the transmitter and receiver, respectively. A UWOC transmission with a distance of 50 m and a data rate of 300 Mbps is realized, which is the highest rate-distance product realized by an ordinary monochromatic LED-based transmitter ever reported. The stability and practicability of the proposed UWOC system with relaxed alignment requirement are verified in laboratory and swimming pool, as well as in a real harsh sea environment.

Abstract:With the development of the underwater Internet of Things (UIoTs), underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC), with characteristics of wide bandwidth, high transmission rate, and low time delay, has become a promising technology for high-speed underwater wireless communication. In this paper, the current status of real-time UWOC systems was reviewed in detail at first, and then a Gbps-level real-time full-duplex underwater wireless optical communication transceiver (RTFD-UWOCT) based on laser diodes (LDs) was proposed. Furthermore, the performance of the RTFD-UWOCT was validated through water tank experiments, swimming pool experiments, and sea trials. In a swimming pool with water attenuation coefficients being measured as 0.5311 dB/m (0.1233 m-1) at 455 nm and 0.4761 dB/m (0.1096 m-1) at 525 nm, respectively, we demonstrated a 30-m/1.2-Gbps full-duplex UWOC link. Moreover, a 35-m/1.0-Gbps uplink and a 40-m/1.0-Gbps downlink in the simplex operation mode were achieved. Afterward, to further explore the robustness of the RTFD-UWOCT to turbulence, a 20-m/1-Gbps full-duplex UWOC link was realized under bubble-induced turbulence generated by an air pump and bubble stones with an air flow rate of 8.5 L/min. Finally, considering the practicality and reliability, a sea trial was conducted at a depth of 10 m in Sun Bay, Sanya, China. A 5-m/0.25-Gbps real-time UWOC link in a real seawater channel was achieved with extremely high attenuation coefficients of 5.6794 dB/m (1.3077 m-1) at 455 nm and 6.0717 dB/m (1.3981 m-1) at 525 nm, respectively. Nevertheless, considering the link budget in a pure seawater channel, it is estimated that our proposed RTFD-UWOCT could achieve a 54.27-m/1.2-Gbps real-time full-duplex UWOC. The above results verified that the RTFD-UWOCT can achieve a full-duplex communication link in the short-to-medium range at Gbps levels, which is also expected to meet the high-speed communication needs of UIoTs in the future.

Abstract:Underwater Wireless Optical Communication (UWOC) holds significant implications in the realms of marine scientific observation, marine military security, and marine resource utilization. Overcoming the challenges associated with cross-medium information transmission represents a pivotal research frontier within the domain of underwater Internet of Things (IoT). This paper investigates the across water-air-interface ultraviolet light uplink communication in the presence of waves. Different degrees of diffuse-line-of-sight and different sizes of waves are studied in the communication link to assess their impact on transmission performance. Using non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation, a data transmission of 17.4 Mbit/s is achieved with a lateral displacement of 5 cm in still water, and 17.1 Mbit/s data transmission is achieved under aligned 12 mm wave amplitude condition. A method is proposed to reduce the dependence on relay in across water-air-interface communication when the optical transmitter and receiver are not aligned, and the effectiveness of using ultraviolet light communication under large wave conditions is demonstrated. Bit error rate and received optical power indicate that increasing wave size and deviation of the transceivers both result in channel attenuation in the water-air-interface channel, thus degrading link performance.

Long-term and Real-time High-speed Underwater Wireless Optical Communications in Deep Sea

Abstract:Seafloor observation network can perform all-weather, long-term, continuous, real-time, and in-situ observation of the ocean by combing various observation methods including cabled seafloor nodes, self-contained nodes, as well as mobile platforms, where reliable and long-term high-speed underwater wireless communication becomes an essential demand. Recently, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has emerged as a highly promising solution and is rapidly becoming a research hotspot for meeting this requirement. In this article, we demonstrate the experiment and application of high-speed UWOC system for deep sea seafloor observation network. To the best of our knowledge this is the first long-term real-time deep-sea UWOC link with bitrate as high as 125 Mbps. Between 30 m distance and at a depth of 1650 m, two-way Ethernet UWOC links are realized with 125 Mbps direction-adjustable green light link and 6.25 Mbps non-line-of-sight (NLOS) blue light link. High quality video transmission of 8K 30 FPS and 4K 120 FPS are realized through high-speed 125 Mbps green light link, with 100% peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) agreement, showing the capability of transmitting high-quality videos lossless. The 30-day long-term measurement results show that the BER performance of both 125 Mbps and 6.25 Mbps links is lower than 10-5, proving the stability and reliability of this UWOC system at depth of 1650 m. The maximum transmission distance for the green and blue light links are estimated to be 117.7 and 128.3 m with considering the geometry loss, which can be extended to 231.6 and 337.5 m without geometry loss. As the first long-term and real-time UWOC system in deep sea, we believe this demonstration can provide valuable experience for further UWOC studies and converged ocean observation networking with cabled and cable-less observation platforms.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel scheme based on underwater optical wireless communication and positioning (UOWC-UOWP) for an underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN). A dual-hop system is adopted to extend the limited coverage area of the UWSN with mobile nodes, consisting of a grade-index plastic optical fiber (GI-POF) link and a wireless link. Specifically, the mini-LED offers high-speed and flexible uplink transmission and the high-power LED enables both downlink transmission and positioning. The time frame design and code division multiplexing access (CDMA) support multi-user signal transmission. Proof-of-concept experiments with GI-POF and wireless link demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, which offers full-duplex communication, high-precise positioning and extended distance. To the best of our knowledge, the UOWC-UOWP convergent system is proposed for the first time. It has great potential to support high-capacity transmission between mobile nodes for future underwater transmission scenarios.
