Abstract:Ocean observation system that involves multiple underwater vehicles and seafloor nodes plays an important role in better learning the ocean, where underwater wireless communication is mandatory for massive data interaction. Optical communication that has wide bandwidth and comprehensive working distance is the preferred method compared to acoustic and other methods. However, the presence of directionality makes the optical method difficult to use especially when the transceiver is equipped on a motive vehicle. In this study, an underwater free-space optical communication method of transmitting information is proposed. Characteristics of underwater optical transmission, as well as the photoelectric signal processing and modulation and demodulation algorithms, are studied and modeled. New approach for realizing underwater free-space optical communication is proposed and simulated. A prototype including a free-space optical transmitter and a receiver is developed; tests in different scenarios were carried out, and the results were observed: (1) by using the minimum number of LEDs, the effect of uniform lighting in space is achieved, and the transmitter coverage reaches 160°. (2) When the power of the transmitter is 10 W and the communication rate is 1 Mbps, the maximum communication distance reaches 13 m.

Abstract:This paper aims to address the challenges of short optical communication distances and high Bit Error Rates (BERs) caused by seawater absorption, scattering, and underwater turbulence. This paper establishes an optical communication channel model based on the Monte Carlo method and simulates and analyzes the process of received optical power attenuation when light is transmitted underwater due to absorption and scattering. The simulation model focuses on the influence of seawater type, transmission distance, receiver position, and angle on the received optical power attenuation. The results of this simulation will provide theoretical support for the development of prototype underwater optical communication systems and experiments in complex environments. To solve the long-range weak signal reception and processing issues in underwater optical wireless communication systems, this paper proposes the design and implementation of an underwater optical wireless communication system using optimized on-off keying high-power light-emitting diode/laser diode modulation technology and avalanche photodiode (APD)/photomultiplier (PMT) receiver modules. In addition, this paper describes the design of the underwater optical communication host computer software, which provides functions such as mode selection, BER monitoring, and file transfer. To test the performance of the proposed system, this paper conducts experiments in a 35 m long pool, fixed platform, and underwater mobile platform, as well as cross-air-water interface optical communication performance test experiments in a complex hydrological environment. The results show that the system achieved a 35 m underwater medium communication distance, transmission rate of 5–20 Mbps, and cross-domain wireless optical communication function under the condition of a BER of less than 10−6. The experiments also revealed that the communication distance decreases as the turbidity of the water body increases and the PMT receiver module selected at the receiver end has a longer communication distance than the APD receiver module. Overall, this paper demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed technology for underwater optical communication systems in complex waters, providing theoretical and data support for the next engineering practice.

Abstract:Foreseeing the proliferation of underwater vehicles and sensors, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a key enabler for ocean exploration, with strong competitiveness in short-range bandwidth-intensive applications. We provide a tutorial on the basic concepts and essential features of UWOC, as well as an overview of work being conducted in this field. Research challenges, arising from the characteristics of underwater channels, and possible roadmaps are discussed in detail. This review is expected to be of great use for the link designers of this field.

Abstract:With the continuous development of ocean exploration technology, people put forward higher requirements for highspeed and long-distance underwater wireless communication technology. Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has attracted the attention of many scholars because of its high transmission rate, large capacity, low power consumption and small size. In this paper, an underwater communication scheme using blue-green excitation (532nm) as signal source is presented from the point of view of hardware and software design. This paper establishes a model by mathematical method, analyses many factors that affect the state of underwater optical communication link, simulates the real underwater channel environment by Monte Carlo method, establishes end-to-end signal strength model, and finally simulates and verifies the communication system by MATLAB software.

Abstract:More and more underwater vehicles and sensor networks are deployed as humans increase their efforts to explore and develop the ocean. Traditional underwater cables cannot adapt to the communication between mobile nodes, and underwater acoustic communication cannot meet the increasing demand for data transmission. Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has great advantages in short-distance high-speed underwater communication application scenarios because of its advantages such as high speed, low latency, low power consumption, and good confidentiality. However, due to the large attenuation, the limited transmission distance of light in the water has been restricting the development and application of UWOC. This review summarizes the methods and technical paths for extending the distance of UWOC, which can provide some inspiration for those engaged in this research field.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel concept on underwater fiber wireless (Fi-Wi) communication system with a fully passive wireless front end. A low-cost step-index (SI) plastic optical fiber (POF) together with a passive collimating lens at the front end composes the underwater Fi-Wi architecture. We have achieved a 1.71-Gb/s transmission at a mean BER of 4.97 x 10(-3) (1.30 x 10(-3) when using power loading) over a 50-m SI-POF and 2-m underwater wireless channel using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Although the wireless part is very short, it actually plays a crucial role in practical underwater implementation, especially in deep sea. Compared with the wired solution (e.g. using a 52-m POF cable without the UWOC part), the proposed underwater Fi-Wi scheme can save optical wet-mate connectors that are sophisticated, very expensive and difficult to install in deep ocean. By combining high-capacity robust POF with the mobility and ubiquity of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC), the proposed underwater Fi-Wi technology will find wide application in ocean exploration. Abstract:The transmission distance, alignment requirement and stability of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems are usually difficult to trade off. In this article, to ensure that the optical spot at the receiver end has sufficient optical power and uniform power distribution, the transmitter of a UWOC system is designed based on a single-color light-emitting diode (LED) array with a beam shaping system. The lens group-based beam shaping scheme not only extends the transmission distance, but still maintains the easy-alignment nature and stability of the LED-based UWOC link. At the receiver, a diversity reception scheme with an array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), and a high-gain scheme combining a PMT with an optical antenna, are adopted and compared. To alleviate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and compensate for the nonlinear distortion of the signal, hardware pre-equalization and nonlinear post-equalization based on Volterra are adopted at the transmitter and receiver, respectively. A UWOC transmission with a distance of 50 m and a data rate of 300 Mbps is realized, which is the highest rate-distance product realized by an ordinary monochromatic LED-based transmitter ever reported. The stability and practicability of the proposed UWOC system with relaxed alignment requirement are verified in laboratory and swimming pool, as well as in a real harsh sea environment.

Abstract:Optical communication has been employed in a wide range of applications, including terrestrial, submarine, inter-satellite, and even space communication. It is particularly successful in fiber-based communication networks that vastly reshape modern life through the Internet. With the intensified activities such as undersea resource exploration, ecosystem monitoring, and recreation, underwater is an exciting new arena for optical wireless communication (OWC). In this paper, we review the recent progress of underwater and water-air OWC systems. Channel characterization, communication system design, and performance investigations are given. Critical limitations and effective mitigation methods to overcome the influence of bubbles and waves are presented. We also address the current issues for proper performance comparison under different wave conditions. With further research in channel modeling, device innovation, and system design optimization, practical and robust underwater and water-air OWC systems can be realized.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communications refer to data transmission in unguided water environment through wireless carriers, i.e., radio-frequency (RF) wave, acoustic wave, and optical wave. In comparison to RF and acoustic counterparts, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) can provide a much higher transmission bandwidth and much higher data rate. Therefore, we focus, in this paper, on the UOWC that employs optical wave as the transmission carrier. In recent years, many potential applications of UOWC systems have been proposed for environmental monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster precaution, and military operations. However, UOWC systems also suffer from severe absorption and scattering introduced by underwater channels. In order to overcome these technical barriers, several new system design approaches, which are different from the conventional terrestrial free-space optical communication, have been explored in recent years. We provide a comprehensive and exhaustive survey of the state-of-the-art UOWC research in three aspects: 1) channel characterization; 2) modulation; and 3) coding techniques, together with the practical implementations of UOWC.

Abstract:Compared with the well-established techniques for underwater acoustic communication, underwater wireless optical communication provides much higher transmission bandwidth and can be an interesting alternative in short range underwater applications. We experimentally investigated the feasibility of using a directly modulated semiconductor laser as the transmitter in an underwater wireless optical communication ( WOC) system. We transmitted pseudo-random binary sequence signals with four different bit rates ( 5Mbps, 10 Mbps, 15Mbps, 20 Mbps) through three different channels, with eye diagram being plotted and the bit error rate being calculated. No obvious signal distortion induced by water was observed.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed and experimentally verified a diffraction-based optical beam shaping technique for underwater optical communication (UWOC) applications. The proposed method aimed to address the key issue in UWOC links, i.e., the high propagation loss experienced by the launched optical beam. It enabled a significantly higher portion of the launched signal to be collected by the receiver. The optimal transmission distance could also be fine-tuned by the software configuration. In a proof-of-concept demonstration based on the off-the-shelf components, 100 Mbps transmission was achieved over 15-meter distance and a significant enhancement in the transmission quality was observed. There is a huge scope for further improvement in the transmission distance and data rate when the proposed technique was used with purpose-built optical components and advanced coding schemes.

Abstract:<p>Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is an emerging and feasible underwater communication technology and has developed rapidly in recent years. Building a high-performance and practical UWOC system requires comprehensive consideration and optimization design from the device to the system, as well as from the internal modulation to the external environment. This paper provides an overview of the recent developments in UWOC systems, covering aspects about the system transmitters and receivers, advanced modulation formats and underwater channels. Some key technologies to improve transmission capacity of UWOC are classified and summarized to provide guidance for system design. The main challenges and perspectives to achieve a reliable UWOC system are also mentioned. The summary and analysis of these advances and techniques will shed light on the future development of UWOC technology and assist in the construction of the internet of underwater things.</p>

Abstract:Underwater optical communication (UWOC) is a potential solution for broadband connectivity in oceans and seas for underwater applications providing high data rate transmission with low latency and high reliability. Recent measurement campaigns suggest generalized Gamma distribution as a viable model for oceanic turbulence. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a UWOC system by modeling the vertical underwater link as a multi-layer cascaded channel, each distributed according to independent but not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) generalized Gamma random variables and considering the zero bore-sight model for pointing errors. We derive analytical expressions for probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) for the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of the combined channel and develop performance metrics of the considered UWOC system using outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and ergodic capacity. We also derive the asymptotic expressions for outage probability and average BER to determine the diversity order of the proposed system for a better insight into the system performance. We use Monte-Carlo simulation results to validate our exact and asymptotic expressions and demonstrate the performance of the considered underwater UWOC system using measurement-based parametric data available for turbulent oceanic channels.

Abstract:Underwater Wireless Optical Communication (UWOC) holds significant implications in the realms of marine scientific observation, marine military security, and marine resource utilization. Overcoming the challenges associated with cross-medium information transmission represents a pivotal research frontier within the domain of underwater Internet of Things (IoT). This paper investigates the across water-air-interface ultraviolet light uplink communication in the presence of waves. Different degrees of diffuse-line-of-sight and different sizes of waves are studied in the communication link to assess their impact on transmission performance. Using non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation, a data transmission of 17.4 Mbit/s is achieved with a lateral displacement of 5 cm in still water, and 17.1 Mbit/s data transmission is achieved under aligned 12 mm wave amplitude condition. A method is proposed to reduce the dependence on relay in across water-air-interface communication when the optical transmitter and receiver are not aligned, and the effectiveness of using ultraviolet light communication under large wave conditions is demonstrated. Bit error rate and received optical power indicate that increasing wave size and deviation of the transceivers both result in channel attenuation in the water-air-interface channel, thus degrading link performance.

A Fast Monte Carlo Simulation Method for Underwater Wireless Optical Channels with Large Attenuation Length.

Abstract:In this work, a fast Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method is proposed to deal with the common problem of lengthy simulation time in underwater wireless optical channels with large attenuation lengths. By conducting plenty of simulations and experiments, the linear relationship between the received optical power (ROP) and reception area under large attenuation length has been observed, analyzed, and experimentally verified. Specifically, when using laser diodes (LDs) as light sources, the ROPs exhibited a linearly increasing trend as the detector diameter varied from 10 cm to 200 cm for a transmission distance of 12 m in harbor water. When using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources, a similar linear relationship held for transmission distances longer than 20 m, 10 m, and 5 m in clear water, coastal water, and harbor water, respectively. After that, our experiment also confirmed that as the water became increasingly turbid, even through only a 20-cm water body, the LD beam spot tended to homogenize. By adding 3-gram Mg(OH) 2 powder and within a measured radial displacement of ±5 cm, the normalized ROP difference would not exceed 5%. In summary, such a linear relationship can be applied to shorten the MC simulation time by simply increasing the reception area of detectors. It is greatly beneficial to the rapid design of underwater wireless optical communication systems that can support a long transmission distance or work in relatively turbid waters.
