Abstract:The oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface and represent one of the least explored frontiers; yet, the oceans are integral to climate regulation, nutrient production, oil retrieval, and transportation. Also, water systems in general are of vital importance to life on Earth and commerce. For these reasons, there is significant interest in monitoring aquatic environments for scientific, environmental, commercial, safety, and military purposes. WUWNet is the premier venue for research and development bringing real-time, in-situ sensing and actuation to this aquatic world. The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners in areas relevant to underwater networks and systems.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communications (UWC) has been playing an important role in marine activities for the second half of the 20th century. Ranging from military purposes in its early stages to today’s industrial and non-profit applications such as environmental monitoring, oceanographic data collection, disaster monitoring, and underwater resource exploration, there has been a growing interest in the realization of underwater wireless networks. However, practical applications often require significant data bandwidth. Such requirements are not always met by the design of current UWC systems, which are challenged by the unique and harsh conditions of underwater communication channels, including for example severe attenuation, multipath dispersion, and limited capability to exploit channel resources. Recently, many academic and industrial researchers have worked on the improvement of UWC systems by augmenting them with state-of-the-art information and communication technologies. There have been reports of new results and insight on the fundamental theories and practical implementations of UWC systems, i.e., UWC channel models and estimation, digital signal processing, advanced transceiver design, multiple access (MAC), and routing and upper-layer protocols, aswell as successful cross-layer design implementations.

Abstract:More than 75% of the Earth surface is covered by water in the form of oceans. The oceans are unexplored and very far-fetched to investigate due to distinct phenomenal activities in the underwater environment. Underwater wireless communication (UWC) plays a significant role in observation of marine life, water pollution, oil and gas rig exploration, surveillance of natural disasters, naval tactical operations for coastal securities and to observe the changes in the underwater environment. In this regard, the widespread adoption of UWC has become a vital field of study to envisage various military and commercial applications that have been growing interest to explore the underwater environment for numerous applications. Acoustic, Optical and RF wireless carriers have been chosen to be used for data transmission in an underwater environment. The internet of underwater things (IoUT) and next-generation (5G) networks have a great impact on UWC as they support the improvement of the data rate, connectivity, and energy efficiency. In addition to the potential emerging UWC techniques, assisted by 5G network and improve existing work is also focusing in this study. This survey presents a comprehensive overview of existing UWC techniques, with possible future directions and recommendations to enable the next generation wireless networking systems in the underwater environment. The current project schemes, applications and deployment of latest amended UWC techniques are also discussed. The main initiatives and contributions of current wireless communication schemes in underwater for improving quality of service and quality of energy of the system over long distances are also mentioned.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communication (UWC) means the transmission of data using wireless channels through the underwater, i.e. radio frequency waves (RF), acoustic waves and optical waves in an unguided water environment. In this review article we focus on underwater optical wireless communications (UWOCs) using optical waves as transmission medium. UWOCs have a much higher communication frequency and therefore a much higher data rate compared to RF and acoustic counter-parts. Due to this high-speed data transfer advantage, UWOC has been very attractive over the past few years. Many applications have been proposed in UWOC systems for protection of the environment, underwater exploration, emergency alerts and military operations etc. However, underwater channels also suffer from extreme absorption and dispersion. In recent years, a variety of innovative methods of network architecture have been developed to meet these technological challenges, which are different from standard terrestrial, open space optical communications. In this article we give a detailed overview of various research activities on UWOC.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communications refer to data transmission in unguided water environment through wireless carriers, i.e., radio-frequency (RF) wave, acoustic wave, and optical wave. In comparison to RF and acoustic counterparts, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) can provide a much higher transmission bandwidth and much higher data rate. Therefore, we focus, in this paper, on the UOWC that employs optical wave as the transmission carrier. In recent years, many potential applications of UOWC systems have been proposed for environmental monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster precaution, and military operations. However, UOWC systems also suffer from severe absorption and scattering introduced by underwater channels. In order to overcome these technical barriers, several new system design approaches, which are different from the conventional terrestrial free-space optical communication, have been explored in recent years. We provide a comprehensive and exhaustive survey of the state-of-the-art UOWC research in three aspects: 1) channel characterization; 2) modulation; and 3) coding techniques, together with the practical implementations of UOWC.

Abstract:This paper reviews the physical fundamentals and engineering implementations for efficient information exchange via wireless communication using physical waves as the carrier among nodes in an underwater sensor network (UWSN). The physical waves under discussion include sound, radio, and light. We first present the fundamental physics of different waves; then we discuss and compare the pros and cons for adopting different communication carriers (acoustic, radio, and optical) based on the fundamental first principles of physics and engineering practice. The discussions are mainly targeted at underwater sensor networks (UWSNs) with densely deployed nodes. Based on the comparison study, we make recommendations for the selection of communication carriers for UWSNs with engineering countermeasures that can possibly enhance the communication efficiency in specified underwater environments. Abstract:Foreseeing the proliferation of underwater vehicles and sensors, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a key enabler for ocean exploration, with strong competitiveness in short-range bandwidth-intensive applications. We provide a tutorial on the basic concepts and essential features of UWOC, as well as an overview of work being conducted in this field. Research challenges, arising from the characteristics of underwater channels, and possible roadmaps are discussed in detail. This review is expected to be of great use for the link designers of this field.

Abstract:Optical communication has been employed in a wide range of applications, including terrestrial, submarine, inter-satellite, and even space communication. It is particularly successful in fiber-based communication networks that vastly reshape modern life through the Internet. With the intensified activities such as undersea resource exploration, ecosystem monitoring, and recreation, underwater is an exciting new arena for optical wireless communication (OWC). In this paper, we review the recent progress of underwater and water-air OWC systems. Channel characterization, communication system design, and performance investigations are given. Critical limitations and effective mitigation methods to overcome the influence of bubbles and waves are presented. We also address the current issues for proper performance comparison under different wave conditions. With further research in channel modeling, device innovation, and system design optimization, practical and robust underwater and water-air OWC systems can be realized.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communication (UWC) technology has attracted widespread attention in the past few years. Compared with conventional acoustic underwater wireless communication technology, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) technology has promising potential to provide high data rate wireless connections due to the large license-free bandwidth. Building a high-performance and reliable UOWC system has become the target of researchers and various advanced and innovative technologies have been proposed and investigated. Among them, better hardware such as transmitters and receivers, as well as more advanced modulation and signal processing techniques, are key factors in improving UOWC system performance. In this paper, we review the recent development in UOWC systems. In particular, we provide a brief introduction to different types of UOWC systems based on channel configuration, and we focus on various recent studies on advanced signal processing methods in UOWC systems, including both traditional non-machine learning (NML) equalizers and machine learning (ML) schemes based on neural networks. In addition, we also discuss the key challenges in UOWC systems for future applications.

Abstract:This paper introduces the realization of a wideband MIMO underwater acoustic (UWA) communication experimental system. The system aims at the inherent characteristics of shallow sea acoustic channel with reasonable hardware design. The DT9836 and the DT9816 are used as multifunction data acquisition (DAQ) modules for transmitter and receiver respectively. The USB is used as the communication interface between the underlying hardware equipment and the host computer with QuickDAQ software. The system is verified for its reliability and practicability through the experiments in an anechoic tank and Zhoushan shallow sea area.

Abstract:Underwater Optical Wireless Communication (UOWC) is not a new idea, but it has recently attracted renewed interest since seawater presents a reduced absorption window for blue-green light. Due to its higher bandwidth, underwater optical wireless communications can support higher data rates at low latency levels compared to acoustic and RF counterparts. The paper is aimed at those who want to undertake studies on UOWC. It offers an overview on the current technologies and those potentially available soon. Particular attention has been given to offering a recent bibliography, especially on the use of single-photon receivers.

Abstract:There is no escaping fact that a huge amount of unexploited resources lies underwater which covers almost 70% of the Earth. Yet, the aquatic world has mainly been unaffected by the recent advances in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and their pervasive penetration in modern day research and industrial development. The current pace of research in the area of underwater sensor networks (UWSNs) is slow due to the difficulties arising in transferring the state-of-the-art WSNs to their underwater equivalent. Maximum underwater deployments rely on acoustics for enabling communication combined with special sensors having the capacity to take on harsh environment of the oceans. However, sensing and subsequent transmission tend to vary as per different subsea environments; for example, deep sea exploration requires altogether a different approach for communication as compared to shallow water communication. This paper particularly focuses on comprehensively gathering most recent developments in UWSN applications and their deployments. We have classified the underwater applications into five main classes, namely, monitoring, disaster, military, navigation, and sports, to cover the large spectrum of UWSN. The applications are further divided into relevant subclasses. We have also shown the challenges and opportunities faced by recent deployments of UWSN.

Abstract:At present, the realities of acoustic communications and undersea networks differ substantially from the expectations arising from academic theory and investigation. The issue is not that the fundamentals of communications theory do not apply, but rather the fact that the difficulties of the acoustic channel do not necessarily fit the assumptions underlying conventional applications of that theory. In this paper we describe many of the practical problems that have been addressed over the past ten years of modem development. Some of the issues addressed have an RF analog, but the severity of the channel and the combination of channel constraints and modem-platform operations makes acoustic communications a very different problem. In particular, we address these issues via their impact on physically small, battery powered, DSP-based, omni-directional modems. Next we describe progress toward using commercial acoustic modems as the basis for underwater networks. We discuss design choices at the physical, link, and network layers that are consistent with the compound constraints of the transmission channel and modem.

Abstract:We present a first detailed survey on underwater and air-water (A-W) wireless communication networks (WCNs) that mainly focuses on the security challenges and the countermeasures proposed to date. For clarity of exposition, this survey paper is mainly divided into two parts. The first part of the paper focuses on the state-of-the-art underwater and A-W WCNs whereby we outline the benefits and drawbacks of the four promising underwater and A-W candidate technologies: radio frequency (RF), acoustic, optical and magnetic induction (MI), along with their channel characteristics. To this end, we also describe the indirect (relay-aided) and direct mechanisms for the A-W WCNs along with their channel characteristics. This sets the stage for the second part of the paper whereby we provide a thorough comparative discussion of a vast set of works that have reported the security breaches (as well as viable countermeasures) for many diverse configurations of the underwater and A-W WCNs. Specifically, we provide a detailed literature review of the various kinds of active and passive attacks which hamper the confidentiality, integrity, authentication and availability of both underwater and A-W WCNs. Finally, we highlight some research gaps in the open literature and identify security related some open problems for the future work.

Abstract:A vision about underwater wireless optical and acoustic communication in underwater environment is discussed with its real‐time existing applications. The existing optical and acoustic approaches with its novelty, various modes of communication, its 2D and 3D architectures with the protocol layers, and channel behaviors are analyzed. Challenges to achieve efficient underwater transmission are listed out. The simulation is performed to compare the optical and acoustic behaviors in terms of temperature, salinity, pressure, and depth velocity variations in underwater environment. Summary Underwater Wireless Communication is a rapidly growing technology in the research domain. The researchers have been working towards the developments in underwater communication by investigating climatic changes, prediction of natural disasters, marine environment, monitoring aquatic life, oceanographic transmission, and data collection. The main objective of underwater communication is to achieve lossless, high transmission with the least power consumption. The Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are set up with remote instruments and sensors to enable the natural exploration of the resources in the undersea environment. This research article is based on the study of various modes of communication, architectures, and protocol layers involved in underwater communication. Furthermore, an underwater hybrid connection is established by opto‐acoustic signals, and the overview of various performance characteristics, channel behaviors, and issues in the underwater scenario are investigated.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communication (UWC) networks have attracted substantial attention in recent years. UWC can facilitate critical emerging services including communications for: Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), environmental monitoring, surveillance, navigation, and exploration. Most UWC devices are battery-powered, where recharging/swapping batteries is not straightforward. Since the reliability of a UWC network depends on limited energy storage, energy-efficient communication is critical for its operation. Whilst communication range and data rate in UWC have been popular research topics, until recently, this energy-efficiency aspect of UWC has not received the same level of attention. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive literature review on existing contributions in the area of energy-efficient UWC. At first, we provide a detailed overview of UWC network architectures and relevant challenges for UWC networks. Next, we discuss and compare the most commonly-used UWC physical layer technologies, reviewing the existing physical layer power-saving techniques proposed in the literature. Then, we review various energy-saving techniques in the upper layers, including Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols, routing protocols, and localization techniques. Lastly, we provide a detailed discussion of alternative energy sources in UWC networks before highlighting future research directions in the field and challenges related to the widespread adoption of the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT).
