Abstract:The multi-plane phase retrieval method provides a budget-friendly and effective way to perform phase imaging, yet it often encounters alignment challenges due to shifts along the optical axis in experiments. Traditional methods, such as using beam splitters to record speckle patterns or adjusting focus with tunable light sources, introduce additional complexity to the setup required for multi-plane phase retrieval. Attempts to address these issues computationally face difficulties due to the variable impact of diffraction, which renders conventional homography techniques inadequate. In our research, we introduce a novel Adaptive Cascade Calibrated (ACC) strategy for multi-plane phase retrieval that overcomes misalignment issues. This technique detects feature points within the refocused sample space and calculates the transformation matrix for neighboring planes on-the-fly to digitally adjust measurements, facilitating alignment-free multi-plane phase retrieval. This approach not only avoids the need for complex and expensive optical hardware but also simplifies the imaging setup, reducing overall costs. The effectiveness of our method is validated through simulations and real-world optical experiments.

Optimized Phase Retrieval Method Based on Multi-Focus Property of Zone Plate

Abstract:As a computational imaging method, phase retrieval has wide applications in image reconstruction, wavefront detection, image encryption, etc. It is an image-based wavefront sensing technique and compared with some other traditional measurement methods such as interferometry, phase retrieval has the advantages of easy operation, high accuracy and strong adaptability to the environment. Conventional phase retrieval algorithms, such as the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, retrieve wavefront by iterative calculation. But limited by finite information of the captured diffractive light filed, the calculation process is easy to fall into local minimum value and stagnation occurs in practical, making it unable to converge to the right wavefront. In this paper, in order to improve this phenomenon, a phase retrieval method combined with the zone plate is proposed in this paper. In this method, zone plates are added into the traditional iterative phase retrieval algorithm to modulate the incident wavefront and combined with the multi-focus property, it can collect more effective information about the wavefront in a single optical intensity distribution image and realize a better wavefront reconstruction result. Simulation results indicate that by taking zone plates into calculation, more effective reconstruction results can be acquired. On the one hand, the recovery residual is smaller compared with conventional lens. On the other, although all of these methods reach to a stagnation, zone-plate-based methods are more efficient to get a better result.
Modal-based Adaptive Autofocusing Phase Retrieval for Wavefront Measurement

Abstract:In the Multi-intensities phase retrieval processing, the measurement uncertainty of the defocus distance undermines its measurement accuracy. In this paper, using a general phase retrieval experimental arrangement, we propose an adaptive autofocusing nonlinear optimization phase retrieval algorithm based on the extended Nijboer-Zernike (ENZ) theory. This method concurrently accomplishes correction of defocusing position error and the wavefront measurement requiring without additional facility. The numerical experiments show that the proposed method accuracy searching for the optimal defocusing position is superior to 10 μm among different measurement planes. The numerical experiments show that the wavefront measurement accuracy with the proposed method is superior to λ/100 , RMSE.
Accurate Phase Retrieval Algorithm Based on Linear Correlation in Self-Calibration Phase-Shifting Interferometry with Blind Phase Shifts

Abstract:The self-calibration algorithm is a powerful phase map reconstruction technique for phase-shifting interferometry with random phase shifts. The existing phase reconstruction algorithms has some restrictions on preconditions including the uniformity of background and the well distributed phase shifts. In this paper, a simple, applicable and accurate phase retrieval algorithm based on linear correlation (LCA) with non-iterative characteristic is proposed to improve this issue. Without pre-filtering, the algorithm searches for optimal linear combination coefficients of the difference intensity map by maximizing the linear correlation, and then phase shifts can be solved by these searched coefficients. Finally, according to the obtained phase shifts, the phase map is readily retrieved by using the matrix form of the linear equations. The whole phase retrieval process has no complicated mathematical transformation, hence it is simply and easily implemented. Good performance of the proposed LCA are verified by reconstructed phase maps from multiple kinds of simulation and experiment interferograms with blind phase shifts, along with the comparisons to that of the popular algorithms. Especially, the proposed algorithm has an excellent accuracy of phase reconstruction when the phase shift distributes unevenly.

Abstract:In inertial confinement fusion high energy system, the mid-spatial frequency (MSF) errors of optical elements induced by computer numerical control tools lead to damage to the optical system. Based on the characteristics of the mid-spatial frequency errors, it is measured by using phase retrieval technology. Compared with conventional measurement methods such as interferometry, MSF errors can be measured by phase retrieval without complex measurement systems and large aperture optical elements with MSF errors can be measured via phase retrieval in theory. In this paper, we compare multiple phase retrieval algorithms that are used to measure optical element with MSF errors and explore approaches to improve the quality of results. First, we briefly introduce the feature of MSF errors and the relation between the wavefront of optical element with MSF errors and its diffraction pattern. Second, multiple phase retrieval algorithms including error-reduction (ER) algorithm, hybrid input-output (HIO) algorithm and oversampling smoothness (OSS) algorithm are adapted for the measurement of MSF errors. According to the bandwidth and structure characteristics of MSF errors, the convergence speed and the accuracy of above algorithms are discussed and compared. Then, according to the characteristics of different algorithms, different retrieved wavefront phase via using these algorithms are integrated to improve the accuracy of results. Last, based on the feature of MSF errors, the priori knowledge of algorithms is also discussed to further gear up the convergence speed and the accuracy of algorithms.

Abstract:Axial error arises from the error inherent in man-made measurement of distance between object and detector for in-line holography, resulting in image blurring, defocusing and low reconstruction quality. Nevertheless, existing methods for autofocusing and axial correction requires computing parameters with several distances neighboring current distance, which incorporates additional loops into the iterative algorithms. In this study, we propose an approach that updates diffraction distance directly based on statistical information of reconstructed object, thus eliminating the need for additional loops and reducing reconstruction time. Besides, our methods could achieve high reconstruction accuracy, while maintaining high convergence rate, stability and wide initialization space. The effectiveness of our proposed method has been validated through both simulation and experiments.
Large-scale Phase Retrieval Method for Wavefront Reconstruction with Multi-Stage Random Phase Modulation

Abstract:Phase retrieval method is popularly applied in wavefront sensing and quantitative phase imaging, while the stagnation problem in phase retrieval could seriously affect the accuracy and efficiency of the largescale wavefront reconstruction. In this paper, we proposed an arbitrary complex-valued reconstruction method with multi-stage random phase modulation to eliminate the stagnation problem. The random phase modulation maximum breaks any symmetry and enriches information on diffraction patterns. The multistage random phase modulation is achieved by rotating structured light illumination through row-to-column conversion, which not only provides faster convergence speed but also circumvents resampling errors during the calculation. Besides, without an accurate model of illumination function and prior information of under-test wavefront, the arbitrary complex wavefront and the illumination function are both accurately reconstructed, simultaneously. We further demonstrate that our method is effective for the vortex phase plate measurement without introducing extra errors.

Abstract:Study of phase retrieval technology is quite meaningful, for its wide applications related to many domains, such as adaptive optics, detection of laser quality, precise measurement of optical surface, and so on. Here a hybrid iterative phase retrieval algorithm is proposed, based on fusion of the intensity information in three defocused planes. First the conjugate gradient algorithm is adapted to achieve a coarse solution of phase distribution in the input plane; then the iterative angular spectrum method is applied in succession for better retrieval result. This algorithm is still applicable even when the exact shape and size of the aperture in the input plane are unknown. Moreover, this algorithm always exhibits good convergence, i.e., the retrieved results are insensitive to the chosen positions of the three defocused planes and the initial guess of complex amplitude in the input plane, which has been proved by both simulations and further experiments.

Abstract:Parameters mismatching between the real optical system and phase retrieval model undermines wavefront reconstruction accuracy. The three-dimensional intensity position is corrected in phase retrieval, which is traditionally separated from lateral position correction and axial position correction. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional intensity position correction method for phase diverse phase retrieval with the cross-iteration nonlinear optimization strategy. The intensity position is optimized via the coarse optimization method at first, then the intensity position is cross-optimized in the iterative wavefront reconstruction process with the exact optimization method. The analytic gradients about the three-dimensional intensity position are derived. The cross-iteration optimization strategy avoids the interference between the incomplete position correction and wavefront reconstruction during the iterative process. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed method are verified both numerically and experimentally. The proposed method achieves robust and accurate intensity position correction and wavefront reconstruction, which is available for wavefront measurement and phase imaging.

Abstract:Study of phase retrieval problems is quite meaningful,because this kind of problems is often encountered in many domains,such as adaptive optics,laser quality detection,and so on.In this paper,a hybrid iterative phase retrieval algorithm is proposed,based on the fusion of the intensity information on several defocused planes.Firstly the conjugate gradient algorithm is adopted to achieve a coarse solution of the phase distribution on the input plane;then the angular spectrum method is used in succession for improving phase retrieval accuracy.The simulation experiment shows this algorithm has good convergence and relatively high retrieval accuracy.Moreover,it is still applicable even when the intensity information on the input plane cannot be obtained.

Abstract:Holographic synthetic aperture radar tomography can realize full 3-D reconstructions of objects over 360° with very high resolution, and thus becomes an interesting 3-D imaging technique. However, due to the uncompensated platform motion errors, phase errors among different tracks usually exist in this imaging mode, which will hinder the 3-D image focusing. In this letter, a phase calibration method based on phase gradient autofocus is proposed to mitigate the influence of these phase errors. It exploits the space-invariant characteristic of the phase errors in a limited scene and uses an efficient and robust multibaseline autofocus to calibrate the phase errors among the multiple circular tracks. Experimental results with the GOTCHA real data are carried out to demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:As a coherent diffractive imaging technique, axial multi-image phase retrieval utilizes a series of diffraction patterns on the basis of axial movement diversity to reconstruct full object wave field. Theoretically, fast convergence and high-accuracy of axial multi-image phase retrieval are demonstrated. In experiment, its retrieval suffers from the tilt illumination, in which diffraction patterns will shift in the lateral direction as the receiver traverses along the axis. In this case, the reconstructed result will be blurry or even mistaken. To solve this problem, we introduce cross-correlation calibration to derive the oblique angle and employ tilt diffraction into axial phase retrieval to recover a target, which is successfully demonstrated in simulation and experiment. Also, our method could provide a useful guidance for measuring how obliquely the incident light illuminates in an optical system.

Abstract:In multi-plane phase retrieval imaging, the accuracy and efficiency of phase retrieval algorithm are usually mutually restrictive. Specifically, deterministic algorithms struggle to achieve sufficient accuracy, while iterative algorithms consume excessive time, thereby limiting their practical application. To address this issue, we propose a deterministic-iterative integrated phase retrieval algorithm, that is, an approximate phase, which could be quickly obtained by the deterministic algorithm, is imported as an initial value into the iterative algorithm to retrieve more accurate result efficiently. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm, we simulate its performance under various iterations and diffraction distances. Additionally, experiments are conducted using a pure-phase USAF1951 target and fixed mouse fibroblasts to verify its feasibility, high accuracy, and rapid iterative convergence speed. Integrating the deterministic and iterative algorithms, this method offers a novel approach for enhancing phase retrieval.

Abstract:The phase evaluation is not perfect by using three kinds of existing multi-image phase retrieval methods. The amplitude-phase retrieval scheme is employed for initializing the input of the Multi-stage algorithm to obtain a robust result. The synthesized axial multi-image phase retrieval technique is able to be highly accurate convergent with continuous phase distribution of [0, 2 pi] and random phase distribution of [0, pi], which is also demonstrated to have sharper edge for reconstructed phase map in experiment. Abstract:Multi-image iterative phase retrieval methods have been successfully applied in plenty of research fields due to their simple but efficient implementation. However, there is a mismatch between the measurement of the first long imaging distance and the sequential interval. In this paper, an amplitude-phase retrieval algorithm with reference is put forward without additional measurements or priori knowledge. It gets rid of measuring the first imaging distance. With a designed update formula, it significantly raises the convergence speed and the reconstruction fidelity, especially in phase retrieval. Its superiority over the original amplitude-phase retrieval (APR) method is validated by numerical analysis and experiments. Furthermore, it provides a conceptual design of a compact holographic image sensor, which can achieve numerical refocusing easily. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
JOINT PROCESSING OF ENVELOPE ALIGNMENT AND PHASE COMPENSATION FOR ISAR IMAGING

Abstract:Range envelope alignment and phase compensation are spilt into two isolated parts in the classical methods of translational motion compensation in Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) imaging. In classic method of the rotating object imaging, the two reference points of the envelope alignment and the Phase Difference (PD) estimation are probably not the same point, making it difficult to uncouple the coupling term by conducting the correction of Migration Through Resolution Cell (MTRC). In this paper, an improved approach of joint processing which chooses certain scattering point as the sole reference point is proposed to perform with utilizing the Prominent Point Processing (PPP) method. With this end in view, we firstly get the initial image using classical methods from which a certain scattering point can be chose. The envelope alignment and phase compensation using the selected scattering point as the same reference point are subsequently conducted. The keystone transform is thus smoothly applied to further improve imaging quality. Both simulation experiments and real data processing are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method compared with classical method.

Abstract:Multi-baseline circular synthetic aperture radar (MB CSAR) can be applied to obtain a three-dimensional (3D) image of the observation scene. However, the phase error caused by radar platform motion or atmospheric propagation delay restricts its 3D imaging capabilities. The phase error calibration of MB CSAR data is an essential step in the 3D imaging procedure due to the limited accuracy of positioning sensors. Phase gradient autofocus (PGA) is widely utilized to estimate the phase errors but is subject to shifts in the direction perpendicular to the line of sight and long iteration time in some sub-apertures. In this paper, an improved PGA method for MB CSAR 3D imaging is proposed, which can suppress the shifts and reduce computation time. This method is based on phase gradient estimation, but the prominent units are selected with an energy criterion. Then, weighted phase gradient estimation is presented to suppress the influence of prominent units with poor quality. Finally, a contrast criterion is adopted to reach faster convergence. The experimental results based on the measured MB CSAR data (Gotcha dataset) demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed phase error calibration method for MB CSAR 3D imaging.

Abstract:Multiple-plane phase retrieval method can recover the complete complex amplitude of the optical field by recording a series of axial diffraction patterns at different distances. However, accurate measurement of the initial distance from the object to the sensor, which is important for high-precision reconstruction, is still difficult. In this paper, we propose to use the diffraction of grating to determine the initial distance. The object is firstly replaced by a transmission grating, and the corresponding diffraction pattern on the first measurement plane is captured. Then combining the grating equation, the initial distance can be obtained. On this basis, the object plane is included in the iterative process. Compared with the original method which only iterates between the measurement planes, the recovered optical field with the proposed method has higher accuracy, better robust to noise, and can avoid the time-consuming digital refocusing process. Numerical simulations and optical experiments are carried out to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Coordinate-based Neural Network for Fourier Phase Retrieval

Abstract:Fourier phase retrieval is essential for high-definition imaging of nanoscale structures across diverse fields, notably coherent diffraction imaging. This study presents the Single impliCit neurAl Network (SCAN), a tool built upon coordinate neural networks meticulously designed for enhanced phase retrieval performance. Remedying the drawbacks of conventional iterative methods which are easiliy trapped into local minimum solutions and sensitive to noise, SCAN adeptly connects object coordinates to their amplitude and phase within a unified network in an unsupervised manner. While many existing methods primarily use Fourier magnitude in their loss function, our approach incorporates both the predicted magnitude and phase, enhancing retrieval accuracy. Comprehensive tests validate SCAN's superiority over traditional and other deep learning models regarding accuracy and noise robustness. We also demonstrate that SCAN excels in the ptychography setting.
