Abstract:Fast corrosion and the resulting adverse biological responses impede the applications of magnesium-based implants. Here, an amorphous Si-O-N coating is prepared on Mg via radio frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to address those issues. This coating is compact and uniform, which can firmly adhere to the substrate. It provides efficient shielding, thus reduces corrosion rate from 36.16 mu m/y to 16.14 mu m/y. The coating itself is biocompatible, and coated Mg exhibits excellent biocompatibility to rat/mouse mesenchymal stem cells. PECVD-obtained amorphous coatings based on biocompatible elements could be a solution for Mgbased implants.
