Abstract:In search of novel semiconductor photocatalysts is one of the important topics in photocatalytic solar fuel production. Here, we report a novel highly fluorinated covalent organic framework (denoted as TFA-COF) constructed via Schiff-base condensation of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthaldehyde and 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine for photocatalytic H-2 production from water. Introducing fluorine atoms with electron-withdrawing ability into the framework of COF can not only significantly increase its specific surface area to 2490.3 m(2)/g, but also reduce its band gap, and bring about the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. As a result, the TFA-COF exhibits a continuous and stable photocatalytic H-2 production rate of 80 mol.g(-1).h(-1) under full wavelength irradiation, which is much higher than that of the similar one without fluorine (TA-COF, 10 mol.g(-1)-h(-1)). Our results illustrate that the introduction of fluorine atoms can effectively increase the photocatalytic performance of COFs.

Abstract:A full-spectrum (300-700 nm) responsive porphyrin supramolecular photocatalyst with a theoretical solar spectrum efficiency of 44.4% is successfully constructed. For the first time, hydrogen and oxygen evolution (40.8 and 36.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)) is demonstrated by a porphyrin photocatalyst without the addition of any cocatalysts. The strong oxidizing performance also presents an efficient photodegradation activity that is more than ten times higher than that of g-C3N4 for the photodegradation of phenol. The high photocatalytic reduction and oxidation activity arises from a strong built-in electric field due to molecular dipoles of electron-trapping groups and the nanocrystalline structure of the supramolecular photocatalyst. The appropriate band structure of the supramolecular photocatalyst adjusted via the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of the porphyrin gives rise to thermodynamic driving potential for H-2 and O-2 evolution under visible light irradiation. Controlling the energy band structure of photocatalysts via the ordered assembly of structure-designed organic molecules could provide a novel approach for the design of organic photocatalysts in energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:Benefiting from the excellent structural tunability, robust framework, ultrahigh porosity, and rich active sites, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are widely recognized as promising photocatalysts in chemical conversions, and emerged in the hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) photosynthesis in 2020. H2 O2 , serving as an environmental-friendly oxidant and a promising liquid fuel, has attracted increasing researchers to explore its potential. Over the past few years, numerous COFs-based photocatalysts are developed with encouraging achievements in H2 O2 production, whereas no comprehensive review articles exist to summarize this specific and significant area. Herein we provide a systematic overview of the advances and challenges of COFs in photocatalytic H2 O2 production. We first introduce the priorities of COFs in H2 O2 photosynthesis. Then, various strategies to improve COFs photocatalytic efficiency are discussed. The perspective and outlook for future advances of COFs in this emerging field are finally offered. This timely review will pave the way for the development of highly efficient COFs photocatalysts for practical production of value-added chemicals not limited to H2 O2 .

Abstract:Abstract Solar-driven photosynthesis is a sustainable process for the production of hydrogen peroxide, the efficiency of which is plagued by side reactions. Metal-free covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that can form suitable intermediates and inhibit side reactions show great promise to photo-synthesize H 2 O 2 . However, the insufficient formation and separation/transfer of photogenerated charges in such materials restricts the efficiency of H 2 O 2 production. Herein, we provide a strategy for the design of donor-acceptor COFs to greatly boost H 2 O 2 photosynthesis. We demonstrate that the optimal intramolecular polarity of COFs, achieved by using suitable amounts of phenyl groups as electron donors, can maximize the free charge generation, which leads to high H 2 O 2 yield rates (605 μmol g −1 h −1 ) from water, oxygen and visible light without sacrificial agents. Combining in-situ characterization with computational calculations, we describe how the triazine N-sites with optimal N 2p states play a crucial role in H 2 O activation and selective oxidation into H 2 O 2 . We further experimentally demonstrate that H 2 O 2 can be efficiently produced in tap, river or sea water with natural sunlight and air for water decontamination.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are one type of promising polymer semiconductors in solar‐driven hydrogen production, but majority of COFs‐based photocatalytic systems show low photocatalytic efficiency owing to lack of metal active sites. Herein, we reported II‐Scheme heterojunction frameworks based on COF (TpPa‐1) and metal‐organic framework (HKUST‐1) for highly efficient hydrogen production. The coordination bonding directed self‐assembly of HKUST‐1 on the surface of TpPa‐1 endows the heterojunction frameworks (HKUST‐1/TpPa‐1) with strong interface interaction, optimized electronic structures and abundant redox active sites, thus remarkably boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen evolution rate for optimal HKUST‐1/TpPa‐1 is as high as 10.50 mmol g−1 h−1, which is significantly enhanced when compared with that of their physical mixture (4.13 mmol g‐1 h‐1), TpPa‐1 (0.013 mmol g‐1 h‐1) and Pt‐based counterpart (6.70 mmol g‐1 h‐1). This work offers a facile approach to the construction of noble‐metal‐free II‐Scheme heterojunctions based on framework materials for efficient solar energy conversion.

Despite the potential, there are relatively few reports on photocatalysts capable of such dual functions. In this study, we synthesized a series of donor-acceptor covalent organic frameworks (COFs), designated as JUC-675 to JUC-677, to explore their photocatalytic efficiency in the co-production of H2O2 and N-benzylbenzaldimine (BBAD). Among them, JUC-675 exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a H2O2 production rate of 22.8 mmol g−1 h−1 with an apparent quantum yield of 15.7%, and its solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency was calculated to be 1.09%, marking it as the most effective COF-based photocatalyst reported to date. Additionally, JUC-675 demonstrated a high selectivity (99.9%) and yield (96%) for BBAD in the oxidative coupling of benzylamine. The underlying reaction mechanism was thoroughly investigated through validation experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work represents a significant advancement in the design of COF-based photocatalysts and the development of efficient dual-function photocatalytic platforms, offering new insights and methodologies for enhanced solar energy utilization and the synthesis of value-added products.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient solar energy–driven photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical to promoting hydrogen-powered technologies in the future. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a kind of crystal material with regular channels, ultra-high surface areas, and tunable chemical components, which provide fascinating functionalities in photocatalytic hydrogen production, by reducing reaction potentials, and accelerating reaction rates. Although some progresses have been gained in this field, basic issues remain to be solved to further comprehend the relationship between the structures, properties, and photocatalytic performance of MOF- and COF-based materials. Herein, the current state-of-the-art in the use of original MOFs and COFs, MOF- and COF-supported, and MOF-derived materials as photocatalysts to produce sustainable hydrogen energy are summarized. It begins with the principles of photocatalytic water splitting and the relevant factors to ascertain the catalytic activity. Following that, particular emphasis is placed in the novel strategies to enhance the photocatalytic performances. Furthermore, the structure−function correlation and applications of MOF- and COF-based photocatalysts are detailed in photocatalytic hydrogen production. Finally, an overview on the prospect and challenges of MOF- and COF-based photocatalysts in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is presented.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a critical environmentally friendly chemical and potential liquid fuel that has been widely applied in various fields. Solar-driven H2O2 production presents remarkable sustainability compared to the traditional anthraquinone method. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) integrate high crystallinity, inherent porosity, excellent durability, and rich active sites. In the past few years, COFs, as a new type of metal-free photo-catalyst, have experienced explosive development in the photosynthesis of H2O2. In the current review, we discuss the fundamental concepts of photosynthesis of H2O2 and systematically summarize the research progress of COF materials for photo-catalytic H2O2 production. We analyze the factors that affect the photo-catalytic performance of H2O2 and evaluate strategies to improve photo-catalytic activity. Finally, the prospects and challenges of COF-based photo-catalysts in this emerging field are envisioned to guide the design and synthesis of high-performance photo-catalytic systems.

Abstract:The review would engender interest in acquiring a basic understanding of the relationship between the structure of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their photocatalytic performances for H2O2 production, with a particular emphasis on manipulating the electronic structures and redox active sites, and trigger a cascade of new, refreshing ideas for further exploration of more versatile COFs toward photocatalytic H2O2 production. As a chemical product with rapidly expanding demand in the field of modern energy and environmental applications, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has garnered widespread attention. However, the existing industrial production of H2O2 is plagued by high energy consumption, harmful waste emission, and severe safety issues, making it difficult to satisfy the environmental/economic production concept. Artificial photosynthesis offers a viable strategy for green and sustainable H2O2 production since it uses sunlight as an energy source to initiate the reaction of oxygen and water to produce H2O2. Among various photocatalysts, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), featuring highly ordered skeletons and well‐defined active sites, have emerged as promising photocatalysts for H2O2 production. This review presents the nascent and burgeoning area of photocatalytic H2O2 production based on COFs. First, a brief overview of photocatalytic technology is provided, followed by a detailed introduction to the principles and evaluation of the photocatalytic H2O2 generation. Subsequently, the latest research progress on the judicious design of COFs for H2O2 photosynthesis is expounded, with a particular emphasis on manipulating the electronic structures and redox active sites. Finally, an outlook on the challenges and future opportunities is proposed, in the hope of stimulating further explorations of novel molecular‐designed COFs for sustainable photosynthesis.

Mixed‐linker strategy for the construction of sulfone‐containing D‐A‐A covalent organic frameworks for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production

Abstract:The solar-driven photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from water and oxygen using semiconductor catalysts offers a promising approach for converting solar energy into storable chemical energy. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic H2O2 production is often restricted by the low photo-generated charge separation, slow surface reactions and inadequate stability. Here, we developed a mixed-linker strategy to build a donor-acceptor-acceptor (D-A-A) type covalent organic framework (COF) photocatalyst, FS-OHOMe-COF. The FS-OHOMe-COF structure features extended π-π conjugation that improves charge mobility, while the introduction of sulfone units not only as active sites facilitates surface reactions with water but also bolsters stability through increased interlayer forces. The resulting FS-OHOMe-COF has a low exciton binding energy, long excited-state lifetime and high photo-stability that leads to high performance for photocatalytic H2O2 production (up to 1.0 mM h-1) with an H2O2 output of 19 mM after 72 hours of irradiation. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrates high stability, which sustained activity over 192 hours of photocatalytic experiment.

Abstract:Under the topological guidance, the self-assembly process based on tetratopic porphyrin synthon results in a HOF with the predicted square layers topology (sql) but unsatisfied stability. Strikingly, simply introducing transition metal in porphyrin center does not change the network topology but drastically causes noticeable change on noncovalent interaction, orbital overlap, and molecular geometry, therefore ultimately giving rise to a series of metalloporphyrinic HOFs with high surface area, and excellent stability (intact after being soaked in boiling water, concentrated HCl, and heated in 270 oC). With integrating both photosensitizers and catalytic sites into robust backbones, this series of HOFs can effectively catalyze the photoreduction of CO2 to CO, and their catalytic performances greatly depend on the chelated metal species in porphyrin centers. This work enriches the library of stable functional HOFs and expands their applications in photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production based on noble metal-free systems is a promising technology for the conversion of solar energy into green hydrogen, it is pivotal and challenging to tailor-make photocatalysts for achieving high photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we reported a hollow double-shell dyad through uniformly coating covalent organic frameworks (COFs) on the surface of hollow Co9S8. The double shell architecture enhances the scattering and refraction efficiency of incident light, shortens the transmission distance of the photogenerated charge carriers, and exposes more active sites for photocatalytic conversion. The hydrogen evolution rate is as high as 23.15 mmol g-1 h-1, which is significantly enhanced when compared with that of their physical mixture (0.30 mmol g-1 h-1) and Pt-based counterpart (11.84 mmol g-1 h-1). This work provides a rational approach to the construction of noble-metal-free photocatalytic systems based on COFs to enhance hydrogen evolution performance.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) demonstrate significant potential for application in photocatalysis. However, the low efficiency of electron-hole separation and limited stability inhibit their practical utilization in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water splitting. Herein, the novel dual-pyrene-base supramolecular HOF/COF 2D/2D S-scheme heterojunction between HOF-H4TBAPy (Py-HOF, H4TBAPy represents the 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (p-benzoic acid) pyrene) and Py-COF was successfully established using a rapid self-assembly solution dispersion method. Experimental and theoretical investigations confirm that the size-matching of two crystalline porous materials enables the integrated heterostructure material with abundant surface reaction sites, strong interaction, and an enhanced S-scheme built-in electric field, thus significantly improving the efficiency of photogenerated charge carrier separation and stability. Notably, the optimal HOF/COF heterojunction achieves a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 390.68 mmol g−1 h−1, which is 2.28 times higher than that of pure Py-HOF and 9.24 times higher than that of pure COF. These findings precisely acquire valuable atomic-scale insights into the ingenious design of dual-pyrene-based S-scheme heterojunction. This work presents an innovative perspective for forming supramolecular S-scheme heterojunctions over HOF-based semiconductors, offering a protocol for designing the powerful and strong-coupling S-scheme built-in electric fields for efficient solar energy utilization.
