Abstract:The development of photocatalytic systems that enable the simultaneous production of H2O2 and value-added organic chemicals presents a dual advantage: generating valuable products while maximizing the utilization of solar energy. Despite the potential, there are relatively few reports on photocatalysts capable of such dual functions. In this study, we synthesized a series of donor-acceptor covalent organic frameworks (COFs), designated as JUC-675 to JUC-677, to explore their photocatalytic efficiency in the co-production of H2O2 and N-benzylbenzaldimine (BBAD). Among them, JUC-675 exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a H2O2 production rate of 22.8 mmol g−1 h−1 with an apparent quantum yield of 15.7%, and its solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency was calculated to be 1.09%, marking it as the most effective COF-based photocatalyst reported to date. Additionally, JUC-675 demonstrated a high selectivity (99.9%) and yield (96%) for BBAD in the oxidative coupling of benzylamine. The underlying reaction mechanism was thoroughly investigated through validation experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work represents a significant advancement in the design of COF-based photocatalysts and the development of efficient dual-function photocatalytic platforms, offering new insights and methodologies for enhanced solar energy utilization and the synthesis of value-added products.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem this paper attempts to address is the development of efficient photocatalytic systems for the simultaneous production of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and high-value-added organic chemicals. Specifically, the researchers synthesized several donor-acceptor type covalent organic frameworks (COFs), named JUC-675 to JUC-677, aiming to explore the efficiency of these materials in the photocatalytic co-production of H₂O₂ and N-benzylideneaniline (BBAD). ### Main Problems: 1. **Development of efficient photocatalysts**: Current methods for H₂O₂ production involve multiple steps, high energy consumption, and environmental pollution, which do not align with the principles of green sustainable chemistry. Therefore, developing efficient and environmentally friendly methods for H₂O₂ production is an urgent problem to be solved. 2. **Design of bifunctional photocatalysts**: Most existing photocatalysts can only achieve a single function, and there are few reports on photocatalysts that can simultaneously produce H₂O₂ and high-value-added organic chemicals. Therefore, designing and synthesizing photocatalysts capable of dual functions is an important challenge. 3. **Improving solar energy utilization**: Achieving the co-production of H₂O₂ and organic chemicals through a photocatalytic system can maximize the utilization efficiency of solar energy, reducing energy consumption and environmental burden. ### Solutions: - **Synthesis of donor-acceptor type COFs**: The researchers prepared three COFs with donor-acceptor type structures (JUC-675, JUC-676, and JUC-677) through a solvothermal method. These materials exhibit excellent crystallinity, high specific surface area, good porosity, and outstanding thermochemical stability. - **Optimization of electronic structure**: Through precise molecular design strategies, the electronic structure of COFs was optimized to improve visible light absorption capacity, charge carrier separation, and migration efficiency, thereby enhancing their photocatalytic performance. - **Experimental validation and theoretical calculations**: A series of validation experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to deeply explore the reaction mechanism, verifying the efficiency and selectivity of COFs in the photocatalytic production of H₂O₂ and BA oxidation coupling reactions. ### Results: - **JUC-675 exhibits excellent performance**: In H₂O₂ production, JUC-675 achieved a yield of 22.8 mmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹, a solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of 1.09%, and an apparent quantum yield of 15.7%, making it one of the best-performing COF-based photocatalysts reported to date. - **High selectivity and yield**: JUC-675 demonstrated 99.9% selectivity and 96% BBAD yield in the BA oxidation coupling reaction. - **Broad applicability**: JUC-675 showed high efficiency and selectivity in the oxidation coupling reactions of different substrates, making it suitable for the photocatalytic production of various organic chemicals. Through these studies, the paper provides new insights and methods for designing and developing efficient COF-based photocatalysts, promoting the development of solar energy utilization and high-value-added chemical synthesis technologies.
