Abstract:In search of novel semiconductor photocatalysts is one of the important topics in photocatalytic solar fuel production. Here, we report a novel highly fluorinated covalent organic framework (denoted as TFA-COF) constructed via Schiff-base condensation of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthaldehyde and 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine for photocatalytic H-2 production from water. Introducing fluorine atoms with electron-withdrawing ability into the framework of COF can not only significantly increase its specific surface area to 2490.3 m(2)/g, but also reduce its band gap, and bring about the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. As a result, the TFA-COF exhibits a continuous and stable photocatalytic H-2 production rate of 80 mol.g(-1).h(-1) under full wavelength irradiation, which is much higher than that of the similar one without fluorine (TA-COF, 10 mol.g(-1)-h(-1)). Our results illustrate that the introduction of fluorine atoms can effectively increase the photocatalytic performance of COFs.

Abstract:2D metal organic frameworks (MOF) have received tremendous attention due to their organic–inorganic hybrid nature, large surface area, highly exposed active sites, and ultrathin thickness. However, the application of 2D MOF in light‐to‐hydrogen (H2) conversion is rarely reported. Here, a novel 2D MOF [Ni(phen)(oba)]n·0.5nH2O (phen = 1,10‐phenanthroline, oba = 4,4′‐oxybis(benzoate)) is for the first time employed as a general, high‐performance, and earth‐abundant platform to support CdS or Zn0.8Cd0.2S for achieving tremendously improved visible‐light‐induced H2‐production activity. Particularly, the CdS‐loaded 2D MOF exhibits an excellent H2‐production activity of 45 201 µmol h−1 g−1, even exceeding that of Pt‐loaded CdS by 185%. Advanced characterizations, e.g., synchrotron‐based X‐ray absorption near edge structure, and theoretical calculations disclose that the interactive nature between 2D MOF and CdS, combined with the high surface area, abundant reactive centers, and favorable band structure of 2D MOFs, synergistically contribute to this distinguished photocatalytic performance. The work not only demonstrates that the earth‐abundant 2D MOF can serve as a versatile and effective platform supporting metal sulfides to boost their photocatalytic H2‐production performance without noble‐metal co‐catalysts, but also paves avenues to the design and synthesis of 2D‐MOF‐based heterostructures for catalysis and electronics applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks are promising for photocatalysis by virtue of their structural and functional diversity, but generally suffer from low activities relative to their inorganic competitors. To fulfill their full potential requires a rational tailoring of their structures at different scales as well as their surface properties. Herein, we demonstrate benzobisthiazole-based covalent organic frameworks as a superior photocatalyst for hydrogen production. The product features high crystallinity with ordered 2.5-nm-wide cylindrical mesopores and great water wettability. These structural advantages afford our polymeric photocatalyst with fast charge carrier dynamics as evidenced by a range of spectroscopic characterizations and excellent catalytic performances when suspended in solution or supported on melamine foams. Under visible-light irradiation, it enables efficient and stable hydrogen evolution with a production rate of 487 μmol h−1 (or a mass-specific rate of 48.7 mmol g−1 h−1)—far superior to the previous state of the art. We also demonstrate that hydrogen production can be stoichiometrically coupled with the oxidation conversion of biomass as exemplified by the conversion of furfuryl alcohol to 2-furaldehyde.

Stable Zinc-Based Metal-Organic Framework Photocatalyst for Effective Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Herein, a new Zn-MOF material, [Zn(L1)(L2)], 1, was built successfully through a one-pot solvothermal method. The 3D MOF structure was determined by Single X-ray diffraction analysis, IR, and elemental analysis. A series of PXRD tests of 1 after being immersed in different solvents and pH solutions demonstrated the good stability of 1. Interestingly, this material displayed high catalytic activity for the visible-light-driven hydrogen generation under the illumination of white LED in pure water or a mixture of DMF and H2O without additional photosensitizers and cocatalysts. Besides, the studies also showed that the catalytic activity changed constantly as well as the solvent ratio adjustment of DMF and H2O from 4:6 to 2:8. Additionally, the catalytic activity reached the best value (743 μmol g−1 h−1) when the solvent ratio was 4:6. The heterogeneous nature and recyclability of the MOF catalyst, as well as several factors that affect the catalytic activity, were investigated and described in detail. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism for the hydrogen generation of 1 was also proposed based on the fluorescence spectra and UV-vis absorption.

Abstract:The photodriven H-2 generation from water splitting, providing a high-performance energy source, has been recognized to be a promising pathway for solar energy conversion. However, the efficient charge separation for photocatalysts remains a critical issue. In this work, we have rationally encapsulated a Co(II) molecular photcatalyst, [Co-II(TPA)CI][CI] (TPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)-amine), inside the cages of a metal organic framework (MOF) photosensitizer, MIL-125-NH2, for visible-light-driven H-2 production. This noble-metal-free composite photocatalyst facilitates the photo induced charge transfer from MIL-125-NH2 to the Co(II) complex and greatly improves the spatial charge separation, thus significantly boosting the photocatalytic efficiency of H-2 production. In addition, MIL-125-NH2 behaves as a host matrix to achieve hetrogenization of the Co(II) complex, and thus, the composite can be well-recycled.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are one type of promising polymer semiconductors in solar‐driven hydrogen production, but majority of COFs‐based photocatalytic systems show low photocatalytic efficiency owing to lack of metal active sites. Herein, we reported II‐Scheme heterojunction frameworks based on COF (TpPa‐1) and metal‐organic framework (HKUST‐1) for highly efficient hydrogen production. The coordination bonding directed self‐assembly of HKUST‐1 on the surface of TpPa‐1 endows the heterojunction frameworks (HKUST‐1/TpPa‐1) with strong interface interaction, optimized electronic structures and abundant redox active sites, thus remarkably boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen evolution rate for optimal HKUST‐1/TpPa‐1 is as high as 10.50 mmol g−1 h−1, which is significantly enhanced when compared with that of their physical mixture (4.13 mmol g‐1 h‐1), TpPa‐1 (0.013 mmol g‐1 h‐1) and Pt‐based counterpart (6.70 mmol g‐1 h‐1). This work offers a facile approach to the construction of noble‐metal‐free II‐Scheme heterojunctions based on framework materials for efficient solar energy conversion.

Abstract:. Development of inorganic semiconductor photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic production of clean and renewable hydrogen has long been attracting tremendous attentions. Herein, we report an ultrathin porphyrin-based metal-organic framework (PMOF) with Ti-oxo clusters, exhibiting a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of as high as 8.52 mmol.g(-1).h(-1) in the presence of Pt as cocatalyst under a wide range of visible light irradiation up to 700 nm. The photocatalytic reaction over PMOF is a typical ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) process, i.e., the photoinduced electrons transfer from porphyrin-based ligands (light harvester) to Ti-oxo clusters (catalytic center), and thereby the charge carriers' separation is significantly enhanced. Moreover, the long-term course reaction confirms the excellent water-resistance and photo-stability of PMOF in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:In this work, an indium-based metal-organic framework was successfully constructed, namely, as In-MOF, by elaborately selecting an InIII center with unique properties and a functional tetracarboxylic acid with unsaturated and open-coordinated nodes. Interestingly, the InIII center was connected to a single-metal-node-based porous three-dimensional pts net. Its structure was dentified by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, etc. Considering the special luminescent characteristic of an indium-based framework, as-prepared In-MOF was explored as a photocatalyst for H2 production from water splitting. The testing results demonstrate that In-MOF as a promising photocatalyst with a suitable band gap realizes a H2 evolution efficiency of 777.65 μmol g-1 h-1.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a brand-new classification of propitious photocatalysts, which have caused serious concern due to its possible utilization in the changeover of resources into "solar fuels", is challenged by low efficiency of charge separation. Herein, a metal-free 2D-2D BP/TpPa-1-COF p-n hetero-junction was compounded by an effortless solvothermal approach. The construction of BP/TpPa-1-COF p-n hetero-junction could effectively solve the problem of high recombination rate of photoelectron-hole pairs. Optimal sample (15% BP/TpPa-1-COF) exhibited the highest hydrogen production (456.7 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 ) among all heterostructures with non-noble loading, which has been raised 13 times compared with that of pristine TpPa-1-COF and 24 times of 2D BP flakes, respectively. This work not only improved the catalytic efficiency by accelerating the detachment and transport of charge carriers among different interfaces, but also indicated an effective method for constructing highly-efficiency metal-free and cocatalysts-free COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising photocatalysts for water splitting, but their photocatalytic activity is limited by low utilization of visible light, and the high rate of photogenerated electron-hole pair complexation. In this work, a series of carbon quantum dot (CQD)-functionalized covalent organic frameworks, TAPT-COF-CQDs-X, were prepared by reaction of 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TAPT) and 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) using CQDs as the modulating agent. The hydrogen evolution rate of TAPT-COF-CQDs-X was 69.57 mmol h−1 g−1 under visible light (λ > 420 nm) and 6.21 mmol h−1 g−1 at longer wavelengths λ > 520 nm, which were enhancements of 4.35 and 10.9 times that of TAPT-COF. The improved performance of TAPT-COF is attributed to the construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions, the formation of spherical nanofiber structures, enhanced absorption of visible light and a higher charge separation efficiency. DFT calculations indicated a lower energy barrier for H+ to H* reduction for reactions catalyzed by TAPT-COF-CQDs.

Abstract:As photocatalysis technology could transform renewable and clean solar energy into green hydrogen (H2 ) energy through solar water splitting, it is regarded as the "Holy Grail" in chemistry field in the 21st century. Unfortunately, the bottleneck of this technique still lies in the exploration of highly active, cost-effective, and robust photocatalysts. This work reports the design and synthesis of a novel zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) coupled Zn0.8 Cd0.2 S hetero-structured photocatalyst for high-performance visible-light-induced H2 production. State-of-the-art characterizations and theoretical computations disclose that the interfacial electronic interaction between ZIF and Zn0.8 Cd0.2 S, the high distribution of Zn0.8 Cd0.2 S on ZIF, and the atomically dispersed coordinately unsaturated Co sites in ZIF synergistically arouse the significantly improved visible-light photocatalytic H2 production performance.

Abstract:A new quaternary crystalline catalyst was obtained by a mixed hydrothermal method of integrating inorganic semiconductors, titanium oxide cluster (TOC) and molecular redox centers orderly into metal organic framework (MOF) materials. It shows a hydrogen production rate 3711.53 μmol g−1 h−1 under visible light irradiation, exceeds most of the same type of catalyst reported in recent years, and a favorable stability with. The excellent performance of the CdS/TOC/UiO‐67‐bpy/Co composites due to efficient promotion of photo‐induced carrier separation and migration, and offering abundant active sites for generating hydrogen. This work will help to guide the preparation of new efficient and stable photocatalysts and promote the effective conversion of solar energy to chemical energy. Through a new design strategy, we obtain an effective quaternary photocatalyst that shows an efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production performance up to 3711.53 μmol g−1 h−1 and good cycle stability.

Abstract:To solve serious energy and environmental crises caused by rapid industrial development, the formation of heterostructured photocatalysts is a promising approach for efficient and scalable H2 production from water splitting. In this study, a strategy for the synthesis of triphenylphosphine-based covalent organic framework (P-COF-1)/covalent triazine framework (CTF) 2D–2D heterojunctions via intermolecular π–π interactions has been reported. The experimental results show that the H2 production rate of the 5% P-COF-1/CTF heterojunction exhibits 14,100 μmol h–1 g–1, which is 2.5–2.6 times as much as that of pure CTF and the mechanical mixture (5% P-COF-1 + CTF). Based on the results of characterization and theoretical calculations, a possible mechanism to well explain the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the Type II heterojunction system has been proposed. Abstract:Visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a semiconductor provides an effective avenue to produce renewable clean energy and alleviate energy and environmental crises. However, the HER efficiency is still limited by the sluggish electron transfer process. Herein, a highly active covalent organic framework (COF) was constructed from the unusual benzimidazole monomer in a microwave-assisted solvothermal pathway. With single-atom Pt sites as cocatalyst, the catalyst exhibited an HER rate up to 115 mmol g –1 h –1 and a high turnover frequency of 4475.1 h –1 under visible-light irradiation. The above performance relied on the combination of benzimidazole moieties and COF framework, which, on the one hand, stabilized photogenerated electrons to prolong the electron lifetime, and on the other hand provided a strong host-guest interaction that resulted in the creation of single-atom Pt sites and the acceleration of the electron-transfer to the active sites for proton reduction. This work demonstrates the perspective of electron stabilization and interfacial charge transfer avenue construction in the HER process, which can be reached by a molecular-level design of COF-based organic semiconductors by using structural and functional diverse asymmetric building blocks. Graphical A benzimidazole-based COF allowed the formation of single-atom Pt sites during an in-situ photo-deposition process, affording a high H 2 evolution rate of 115 mmol g –1 h –1 and turnover frequency of 4475.1 h –1 under visible-light irradiation. Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting (OWS) is highly desirable for hydrogen production but challenging owing to rapid charge recombination. We demonstrate a dynamic metal-organic framework (MOF) photocatalyst that achieves OWS via one-step photoexcitation. Upon excitation by light, the MOF undergoes a structural twist that suppresses charge recombination and achieves OWS.
