Abstract:Subcooled flow boiling in mini channels has considerable prospects in thermal management applications. However, due to the scale effect and complex behaviors of subcooled boiling bubbles in confined channels, it is insufficient to accurately predict the heat transfer coefficient, especially under high heat flux conditions. Therefore, this study measures the heat transfer coefficient of subcooled flow boiling of water experimentally in mini channels with inner diameters of 1 mm and 2 mm in the operating range of q = 4.3–12.5 MW/m 2 , p = 3.0–5.0 MPa, and G = 2000–10,000 kg/(m 2 ∙s). The influences of working parameters on the heat transfer coefficient are analyzed, focusing on the scale effect. The results indicate that the heat transfer coefficients have lower values within a smaller inner diameter tube, different from conventional results, and the reason lies in the appearance of confined bubbles. In order to consider the scale effect, Confinement number ( Co ) was introduced to obtain a new dimensionless heat transfer correlation, and the mean absolute error of the new correlation was 5.96% compared with our experimental data (1027 data points). Furthermore, a genetic algorithm optimized back propagation (GA-BP) neural network model was established using the dimensionless numbers of the new correlation as input and output parameters, within an error margin of ±5%.
